That’s what I was thinking, but I really took my time with it and can’t member what could have gone wrong. Someone on the forums floated the idea that an injector was stuck open and the white smoke was raw fuel. Given the shady wiring harness, it could be the culprit. @@BBBonYT I rebuilt the engine in my xc70 and also saw a bit of white smoke at first startup. The car had been sitting for a few months when I finished it. It seems that it was condensation. You could always get one of those head gasket testers that use blue fluid.
Did you check the block deck for flatness with a straight edge & feeler gauges? You did have the machine shop MILL that head while they had it, correct? Did you torque the head bolts to specs in the correct pattern and in a multi-step sequence? *Did you use new head bolts?
