Awesome! I love taking something like that, diagnosing the issues, and fixing them right. It's so satisfying to get it all working again like it was back in the day! What were the major issues you were faced with? Thanks for watching!!
You can use the exhaust manifold gasket off a 2.5t Non R, Its one piece. You need to snip the corner on the passenger side of the head, but otherwise so much easier than the individual gaskets
Yeah, I saw that tip somewhere online too. I bought a full gasket kit for the car, but will most likely use this trick instead of getting frustrated with 5 individual gaskets. Thanks for watching!!
@@BBBonYT No problem!! went through this on my R but Cylinder 1 a year ago. It was so much fun lol. Also redid the CCV system and added a catch can inline with the factory system.
@@79sportycustomful I know! Some people see it as a hassle, but I love wrenching and learning about how these things work. Why did you end up redoing the CCV system?
@@BBBonYT its easiest to do it when the intakes off, also there is a banjo fitting that bolts onto the intake, the skinny line on that bypass always breaks due to heat and age. You can replace the whole thing for like 20 or 30 bucks from Volvo. I want to say its also another t5 part
I knew it was a burned valve! Happened to cylinder 5 on a old volvo wagon I had. Leave the ignition cover off the S60R engine - keeps the ignition coils cooler, which can be a common failure on these engines. Love your videos!
Oh interesting, I never considered that leaving the engine cover off would have an effect on components, but it makes sense. Good thing I didn't order replacements yet :) Thanks for watching!!
I just broke 200k on my '09 S80, wifes '10 XC90 is at 115k and in the body shop for a month now, wanting some more of this and the XC70 since my next vehicle is this or that. Maybe a V70R, but seeing this one finishing up would be nice. Come back to us
Working on getting more consistent content out. Between filming, editing, and planning, I have a full plate. But the car WILL run again, and soon! Thanks for your patience, and thanks for watching!!
I know this is a little old and you probably caught it, but two of those injectors (cyl 2 and 3) are incorrect. These R cars came with Bosch "Green Giant" injectors, while the brown Bosch injectors came on regular 2.5T cars. The greens flow significantly more, meaning cylinder 2 and 3 will lean out.
Yup. I think this is the root cause of the burnt valve. And the reason I replaced a few others prematurely. I bought replacement injectors already and got them swapped into the fuel rail. Thanks for watching!
Hey ..got love the power ball shifter...while you’re at it,have a look at the infamous “banjo bolt valve” I’m not sure if that engine has one, also known as the engine killer once it gets messed up and sucked into the engine. Killed our 2007 xc70 with not much mileage and all services done at the dealership on time. There was a bad design early on and there’s a new updated version now. Volvo would not admit to anything, but the early model was a bad design. We had to replace the engine, then again not at all as handy as you are. Looking forward to the next video..Cheers from Toronto,Canada
Interesting, I haven't heard about it, but I will be sure to look into it. Another "As long as we're in there" item :) Thanks for watching all the way from Canada!
Thanks so much! The XC is going through more thought than work right now, but I will get an episode out about it in a few weeks. It's going to be bonkers when it's done! Thanks for watching from NZ! Have yet to meet a car person from NZ that I didn't like
Robert DIY says he always uses new head bolts instead of reusing the old ones. To specify, he was talking about an older, early 90s white block 5 cylinder. He's kinda like the God father of Volvo repair (to me anyways. Haha) butt? What do I know? Little of this, nothing of that. Master of the baters? Yes. You betcha.
really good video and very informative, love your work. Makes me feel a lot more confident trying to remove my own head from my s60R and shimming the block!
Thanks, bud! I am glad you're enjoying the content, as it takes ages to get it completed and edited. The S60R will return again shortly. Thanks for watching!!
I have an 02 ocean race. #347 of 650. I could have used those rear deck struts that keeps it up. Instead of falling on my noggin like it does. I use a handy stick. It works.
NICE! I love seeing the Ocean Race editions in the wild. It's like an easter egg for car people :) For the hatch struts, check RockAuto.com. They have them for under $20. As I get more experience with project cars, I always replace the hood and trunk struts before I start major work. Always worth the money! Thanks for watching!!
Mine is an xc70. The previous owner took good care of it. The only one I've seen with leather seats still in good shape. My goal is zero tune. Half way there. Someday the Ocean Race will be sought after. Maybe.
Thanks bud! I had an 850R in high school, and that was the extent of my Volvo ownership...until I started this channel haha. Such underrated vehicles, and a lot of fun to be had! Thanks for watching.
I saw 250,000 miles. Of course, the right thing to do is to have the head fully machined and rebuilt, but you're more than double your cost into it at that point. You didn't say what your goal for the car is. For me, I'd look for a pick-a-part head with fewer miles and throw it on. If you're set on keeping that original head, I'd at least throw on new camshafts and lifters as well as replace the one valve.
@@BBBonYT Complete pick-a-part head and head install kit (guessing ~$250). Slap it on. Make it run, flip it. Don't spend another dime on it. Hope to clear around $1000. Blow it all on the XC70 build. :)
