Volvo has a program where you pay, I believe around 500 a month, and that amount covers everything for 2 years and then you get a different volvo and continue the 500 a month. It's the ultimate in wasteful consumerism. It sounds like that's what they did for him.

Yes but If he owns the car he also has to pay for maintenace and possible repairs down the road. Now he owns the car for 2 years and all maintenance and repairs are covered by Volvo, he only has to pay insurance and gas. I haven't personally experienced it but the newer Volvo's arent really known for their reliability.

Its a funny story considering this video is about a Volvo. My husband backed into our daughters car in our driveway. Yep, it’s a 2006 Volvo and it didn’t have a scratch on it, but our 2019 Jeep needs $2,000 in repairs! We should have bought a Volvo!!

Fun fact; Volvo cars were so reliable they actually almost went bankrupt in Sweden because at one point everyone had them and no one needed to buy new ones because one car lasted for so long.

That is a true victory right there! I am proud of that man for being wise and not worrying about having the latest fanciest ride just to impress people! He got his money’s worth and definitely saved plenty of money over the years by not having a car payment.

And Volvo only improved drastically since becoming owned by Chinese company with much better products thats gotten consistent excellent reviews new and used, and sales. The dealership didnt give him anything, Volvo actually paid for his 2 year lease he just chose the local dealer to take delivery. Its still a nice gesture, it isnt like they had to do anything other than say congrats for getting to a million miles. Why are people so entitled to think they deserve anything lol. Nice. A Taxi driver in Vancouver, Canada drove his Toyota Prius over 1-million Kms. Toyota Canada gave him a new Prius and the one with the mileage went to a museum I think.
Here in NZ, a man drove his 1990 Corolla for 2 million kms. for delivery work. Got serviced twice a month, and had several cam belts, tires and minor replacements (spark plugs, wipers, etc) but the car still has the original body, engine and transmission. He still uses it for work to this day.
Nothings beats a Toyota, I swear.

That’s right. Toyota Echo here. Nothing beats Toyota. The only problem they have, as you mentioned, are the 10$ timing belts that you have to change every 100k miles. I would take this over any transmission replacement at any frequency .

People are just lazy. Until manufacturers lock you out, via software, from doing repairs yourself (a la Tesla, John Deere, etc.), all it takes is patience and reading and maybe some trial and error. UA-cam is full of mechanics that show very good tutorials on how to fix a lot of stuff on modern cars. Sure, it gets more labor intensive by design, but it is still doable if you simply have patience.

You know, old is a relative term. My second car was a 1972 Volvo 164E. The 940 was a version of the 760 and I remember when that was new and people liking the old 240 better because it looked like the classic 144/164. Then the 850 came out, then the P2s of the early 200s then the Ford era cars and now we have the SPA and CMA Volvos. The current cars in 20 years will be the "old" Volvos in the 2040s.
The new Volvo wont last anywhere near the amount of time the old one did.
My 2004 V70 is about to hit 300,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. Still running like new as our daily driver.
My family got to 150,000 in our 2003 XC70 before it getting totaled by a minor accident. These are good cars, sadly the newer ones don't seem to be quite as reliable as the old ones.
My parents have a 2013 VW Golf 2.0 TDI with 343.000 miles (converted from metric) on it and the first major "repair" that is coming up is the diesel particle filter which is clogged. Great car!
I have a V70 2003 with a bit over 480,000 Km on the meter wich is about 300,000 miles and the car is free from rust and like you said. Runs like new and never a engine/gearbox change...oh and it's a gasoline one not a diesel. In my opinion this is the last generation of "real" Volvos before it became a practice to lower quality and mix in other engines such as Fords flexifuel and what not.

A guy living in my city back around 2013 put over a million kms on his 1995 Hyundai Accent. He had all the maintenance records from new. Original engine and transmission. The Hyundai dealership gave him a choice of any new model he wanted. Not the greatest car company back then but at least they gave him a vehicle for free. I can't believe their only letting this guy have it for 2 years.

to be fair chinese volvo's are probly in the junkyard before that. as someone else said new cars have a shelf life of 3 years before the electricals start acting up and since everything is covered in varanty void plastic's its hard to do a proper maintanace on newer cars and even if you could with all the quartz and chisel circuits they are done either way unless you are an electrical engineer.

@@Cranialdrillingit is a package I actually have it because my wife and I like their SUVs and it is stupid to not just lease a car if you just get a new car every few years as we do. The Volvo thing is great because we can change the colors often or if we are going somewhere we can get a different car that fits the destination. It is essentially just like renting but you are a little more responsible with the cars. I have had it from the beginning of this program so I don't know if my contract allows me more freedoms than other packages but you get a car and you pay for gas and that is the only thing not included. Taxes could not be included but for a decent number a month you get a new car and only pay one place. This is also the first time in history it has been the same price or cheaper to get a new car vs a 2 or less year old car. Which will disappear just as quick as it came. This also worked out for me seeing my truck and car were leases and I finished the leases out bought them outright and could have sold to a dealer for profit but sold privately then leased the new ones well one the other I have to wait on delivery.

Honestly the dealer didn't have to give him a damn thing. He choose to keep that car that long. All they were doing was extending a one time courtesy for what I still don't know. He changed the engine and trans a few times which was like getting another car before hitting a million miles. I would've just gave him some tires and told him to keep on till to 2mil.

I've had my petrol Volvo 940 estate for just 24 years. It has never ever let me down and will probably outlive me. A comfortable, reliable, capacious and safe car.
It's simply the best and at 140,000 miles its still being 'run in'.

Actually, the SPA platform of Volvos (which are the ones currently on sale & have debuted in 2015) have gotten reliable. With any new chassis platform in its first model year, there are some faults that are to be expected. As the Model years progress, the faults will have been ironed out. That’s just how one of the stages of product development works. The T5s and T6s are quite stout now. The T8s are the ones you’d want to avoid. I know and absolutely agree that Volvo would’ve done way better with going the route of an I5 or an I6, but the way they are right now, isn’t bad either.

Let me guess, regularly maintained. Oil change every 3,000-7,500 miles, timing belt every 100,000 miles, tire rotations regularly, regularly cleaned, and overall well kept. This goes to show that all you have to do is maintain your vehicle and clean it.

‘Tire rotations’ does nothing but prolong the life of the treads/useful life of the tires, period.
And it is more necessary in front wheel drive cars.

The only other thing that you may be confused on that could affect suspension wear when it comes to tires is balancing.
If a tire is badly out of balance, it literally bounces up and down wearing out suspension components, bearings out prematurely.
Basically speaking, you need to maintain air pressure, alignment, balancing and rotating strictly affects tire life and wear, period.
Our neighbor growing up had 4 of these old Volvos, with 1-2 always in the garage on jacks and seemingly taken apart. People who love these things are a special breed.

I have a Volvo 850 from 1995. The odometer is broken, but I estimate that it has gone at least about 400000 km or 250000 miles. Still same engine and transmission.
We have a saying for this in the U.K. called Trigger’s Broom.
I remember an article in a car magazine in the 1980s. A woman in the UK commuting from Birmingham to Newbury every day in a VW Golf GTI, did well over 300,000 miles on the original engine and gearbox. Not as many miles as this Volvo but an achievement in the UK. Its a small country and not many people would do a 200 mile round trip to work in a car. Also, in those days a lot of cars went to the scrapyard once they hit 100,000 miles.
