This reminds me so much of how my family in their mother land lives (I was born in the states, NYC), it's really nice and nostalgic. I think when I visit Japan I'd rather spend most of my time in a village setting than in the city.

How cool that they use the bamboo sections like a bento box! I loved that whole process of making the bowls, cups, and chopsticks straight out of the bamboo, definitely the kind of thing I'd enjoy doing.

farmstay style 'holidays' used to bve a thing in the UK aswell. (though they where slightly different). (poorer) people from the towns and cities would basically take their families down to farms during the harvest and work on the farm for the length of their stay with accomodation and food provided. then at the end they'd go back home.

Do you know if this kind of experience is open to foreigners coming to Japan on holiday and would you recommend it? We have been learning Japanese for a couple of years so have beginner to intermediate conversational ability - I don''t know if this would be a hinderance.

Yea you can. There is an organization that helps you find farm host families all over the world called WWOOF. Food and accommodations paid for, but you'll be working 4-6 hours daily (probably). More or less sometimes. They have host families in Japan too

These are the kind of experiences I would love to do. I am thinking of doing a homestay in the future but would love to do something like this too - probably either with Tea or Japanese crafts (like the bamboo or making other things). Love that you get to cook with the family as well. I feel like it would really improve my Japanese speaking ability; I can read well but as soon as social anxiety hits, everything falls out of my head and I zoom back to N5 level. Inspired me to look into this further. Hope you do more Inaka videos - not enough out there!
