I'm not Japanese but Filipino. I was explaining to my son that the Japanese show their appreciation of the person making their food by making slurping sounds when eating. So now, every time he eats noodles, he slurps. Do what you have to do to show your enjoyment of your food. Other nationalities should learn about other cultures and not just about theirs. If they don't want to listen to the sound, then mute the sound. You should definitely keep those photos. Those are precious mementos of your family.

Hi! Thank you for your comment :)
I'm not sure about the slurping thing, but I think we Japanese show our appreciation when we eat by saying two phrases: 'Itadakimasu' and 'Gochisosama deshita.'
"Itadakimasu" is a greeting of gratitude said before a meal. Its origin lies in the verb "itadaku" (to receive), expressing thanks for the lives of the food, the blessings of nature, and the people who prepared the meal. In Japan's agricultural society, there is a deep-rooted spirit of coexisting with nature and respecting all life, influenced by Buddhism. This phrase embodies respect for all entities that provide the ingredients.
"Gochisosama deshita" is a greeting of gratitude said after a meal. The origin of "gochiso" is "chiso" (running around), referring to the effort of gathering food. In the past, preparing a meal required considerable labor, and this phrase came to express appreciation for that effort and hospitality. This greeting signifies gratitude for the bonds formed through sharing a meal and the thoughtfulness of those who provided the food.

While slurping, you also take in air and thereby cool the noodles.

I think in Japanese culture, one is bound to be considerate toward the other and community. If I am correct, schoolchildren participate in the clean-up of their classrooms and other small chores.

Please do not feel as if you need to change the way you eat your ramen. As a overseas viewer, you are giving me a glimpse into your life, your routine and your customs. I enjoy learning how others live. It helps me not only appreciate the ways we are the same but also our differences as well. Your garden is looking well. I hope it produces bountifully for you. My only comment is that I would have taken the spinach you thinned out, washed it and tossed it in your miso soup. Take care and be well. 🙂

Eating like a dog is gross in any form. It is about being caring of others. I suffer Misophonia and it upsets me when people assume others want to hear sloppy slurpy saliva fests while eating. Must others hear one eat? It is not part of the video enjoyment hearing one eat so grossly. It is called thinking of others in a public place. We are far too worried about offending yet say do not feel it is offensive when you care little about offending those it upsets by telling others to just accept bad habits.. It is just bad manners. You eat like an animal then others will comment. Simply mute the sloppy eating for the duration making videos for public consumption. We are not all eating to be heard for likes. Must we listen to a person eat sloppy? Please use your brain.

I am always a bit envy when I see Japanese bathtubs/-rooms. In Germany the bathtubs are big in order to stretch out - which I do not like. I'd prefer a smaller one to sit in (probably available anyhow, but only if you own a house, not in a rented home). Less usage of water and easier to clean. Not to mention how awesome the intelligent water supply with accurate temperature setting is. - Thank you for taking us along!

Hi, I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. Thank you so much for allowing us into your daily routine. Your videos are refreshing and engaging in their honesty and natural content (the ticking of your clock, the sounds of the birds, local traffic, washing machine, etc.). Love the garden updates and I agree with you, composting is a very cool thing indeed. Love the walks about town (similar landscapes St John's Newfoundland, Seattle WA, and San Francisco, CA). Love the local feral cats. The views are amazing (the Cherry Blossoms were magnificent)... My Dude, slurp away on those noodles!!!! I work in a kitchen and it makes me happy seeing people enjoying their food. Your knife skills are improving. A knife tip: when slicing, especially if your working on root vegetables - if you pinch the top of your knife between your thumb and first finger-where the blade meets the handle- you'll have more control over the blade and it helps to prevent bodily harm. Please keep up the great work!!

Garden looks great. Must be good feeling harvesting your own products. And your friends will be happy. Oh my its lot of cleaning you had to do. And carrying that bedding seems realy hard thing to do. Simple dishes are mostly the best ones. I noticed (if I am right) that most Japanese homes do not have the oven. Why is that?I never had coffee from Nicaragua. Interesting. I was disapointed whe we travelled to South America where I was exited for the coffee but it wasnt that great at all. The expalanation was that coffee that we drink in the west is mostly blend of different types of coffee.Like when you show food shop:) You need a small table for your rice cooker.I love pickled daikon. We ger it easy here in our supermarket. If you add an egg to your potatoes you can make Swiss roesti:). Maybe next time you can explain Nato more. I think it is very popular in Japan? beautiful views.Thank you for the video. Cheers

Just found your video! I am American and have been enamored of the Japanese way of doing things for a very long time! When I discovered the reason for the slurping of noodles, and ramen being my favorite food on earth, I can't eat a bowl of ramen without slurping. And I slurp wherever I go. Doesn't even have to be ramen. It could be a bowl of rice. But there's something about pulling air through the food that really does enhance the flavor. Plus it's fun! We are here to enjoy your way of life and your culture. Please don't westernize yourself. Stay authentically Japanese! Subscribed!

What happened to kimchi? You eat a balanced, healthy meal and you are doing well to eat natto every day, at least once. I am told, it is a very good source of protein and potassium, especially for those who eat a vegetarian diet. Also, it is good for the digestive track and aging. About your gardening skills, I can't comment, because I grew hot chili peppers once, the only gardening I did. Thanks again for letting us into your home and have a joyful, exciting week. : )

I've been watching you for a while, and now I'm an expert in miso soup (thanks to you, now I know 4 types of broth for it and all kinds of ingredients).

Many people have that room or closet that seems VERY disorganized. We are in the early process of selling the live/work space we have now and yesterday some potential realtors came to see the space. The storage room for my camera equipment and lighting gear is so embarrassing. Just too much stuff and messy. Luckily all the other parts of our photo studio we try to keep very clean! You now make me want to clean my camera closet...

After using insect foggers for a few years now I've read that it is actually not recommended to vacuum or wipe for a few days because the pesticide residue needs to stay on the floor to keep killing insects and their eggs. I found it did work better that way.

GREAT flipping that potato gratin😊 I really need to ask how much you would charge to clean my house, that was quite a workout doing all that cleaning…Maybe you can find a very large yoga ball, cut it open and stuff your futons in it when you need to clean them, and you can “ roll” your futons to the cleaners instead of carrying them😂…thanks for sharing
