    Saab began life in 1937 in Trollhättan, Sweden, as an aeroplane manufacturer to provide planes for the Swedish Air Force, just as Europe was steeling itself for another war. The company's full name was Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget, giving the world the acronym Saab, The first car production model, the Saab 92, was launched in 1949.

    All the talk about fourth or fifth generation is a successful marketing trick from the us and has very little bearing on how modern a aircraft is. Stealth via angle and materials is just one way to hide the planes signature and Gripen chooses another way. It’s pros and cons with stealth. One thing is that it has to hide all the electronics in the fuselage. Gripen can have it on the tip of the wings and makes the EW suit more powerful Because of the sensors better location. So the Gripen is as good as the F3-35 with some benefits over it and F-35 has some benefits over Gripen. But believe me the Gripen (the latest e-version) is not a lesser aircraft just because the marketing from the us calles it a 4 or 4,5 gen aircraft.
    Thanks for your channel.

    As, alas, very often, especially Americans don't get it about the roles of the JAS 39 Gripen.
    J - Yes, interceptor / figher, that is true,
    S - so is reconnaisance
    A - is the role always misunderstood. The speaker her said "close ground support". WRONG. Gripen is built for carrying RBS 15 anti-ship missiles. It must be remembered that historically, the Swedish Air Force had a vital role in thwarting Russian attempts of seaborne invasion. Its predecessors Lansen and Viggen (which should be pronounced by you English-speakers as it's spelled!) were sort of the Swedish counterparts to the British Buccaneers (as well flying 10 metres above sea level ...). So the "A" role predominantly is heavy naval strike.
    As far as I have been able to gather, The Gripen has won almost all of its duels (against Norwegian F16:s - 10 to 1), against British Typhoons 3-0, etc etc. In Red Flag exercises it didn't need any supporting AEW planes to defeat American air forces, and actually was asked to turn part of its EW off for the following exercises! In Arctic exercises, a single Gripen managed to "shoot down" 2 out of 3 F 15:s - the third fled. Eurofighter the same. And take note, this is the Gripen C version.
    All of this is of course exercises, and against friends. And it should also be noted that it was built with one purpose: To beat Russian forces, especially on and above the Baltic Sea.
    EW and connectivity to AEW, the Swedish radar network, naval vessels etc lies at the heart of its performance. It's very easily upgradeable, should the need arise (just software updates), while the F35, when countermeasures are found against their stealth design, still look as they were built.
    I read somewhere that in RAF squadrons, one Typhoon per squadron receives the same EW suite that ALL Swedish Gripens have.

    The most important part of the plane is not talked about at all, its capeability to take off and land on regular roads in sweeden. In a world where drones and artillery rule supreme, not having to sit on a runway and get shot down is a massive tactical advantage. Something like the F16 is super finicky and had massive issues operating out of the desert for instance, where they needed to be kept in climate controlled hangars ect.

    They keep saying that the Gripen E(latest version) is only a 4.5 gen FIGHTER. But with the even more advanced EW suit and its interconnection system with the rest of the military and it can carry 7 meteors .. i would say its a gen 4.5 stealth fighter.
    Since you cant shoot something you cant target while it can lock and shoot you, its a stealth fighter imho.

      Gripen E went another way. Instead of coating the detection rate on the airframe it went hard on jamming so they will get undetected/ send out multiple signals so you cant lock on it. Its more effective then going "stealth". Since they can just put in new hardware and software for instant upgrades.

      The "generation" of fighters is US supplier marketing. Radar stealth isn't of any use once you are within visual or IR range. It's more of an offensive capability than something for a defensive fighter. Gripen's ability to project ghost radar clones around it makes for the BVR air fight equivalent of Naruto.

    Viggen (the predessessor to Gripen) shared loads of stuff with F14.. F14, F15, F16 and F18 are all the same gen. The later 3 is just a bit more refined, mostly to be cheaper to operate.
    Gripen have loads of features, that is total digital stability (not relaxed stability as claimed in the video). As well as total combat integration system, something USA didn´t have untill F35. On the same token, Gripen is also missing features like internal weapons bay, real super cruise (while the E model probobly have that, it have not been public) and stelth.
    But on the last point, its kind of questionable. Gripen E have active radar cloaking. Where a return is nullified in steed of reduced. How good this system is... very few people know. But its probobly much better than no cloaking, and for sure better than just standard EW. If its as good or even close to stealth of F22 and F35, very few, if any people know.
    And no, Volvo is not a Flagg motor.. its "Flygmotor" that is, Aircraft engine

    This is not a good original video of the JAS 39 Gripen A/B/C/D. A lot of wrong info. First F-16 F-18 and Tigershark were looked at. But not for ideas but as the replacement for the AJS 37 Viggen. None were good enough or had the capabilities the Swedish Air Force was looking for so FMV (Swedish Defense Material Agency) asked SAAB to develop and produce a fighter that have what the Swedish Air Force asked for. There is really nothing in the F-16, F-18 or the tigershark you can find in the JAS except the ground avoidance pull-up system the US and Sweden developed for JAS and F-16 together. BAE sold us the seat with which they can refuse our sales to any country.. BAE got the responsibility for the marketing of the JAS. This cooperation came to an abrupt end when it was found that the BAE bribed a potential customer. Recently BAE asked for SAAB to co-op in the next 6th gen. SAAB agreed but this co-op has also ended as BAE not fulfilling the plan set up for this co-op. The cost for the C version, an hour is around 6000 dollars Ref. The hourly price for F-16 is around 9,000 dollars. A fighter that in a war setting (You flip a switch in the cockpit and engine, signals everything used in peace change. WAR/PEACE) can turn at 12 G, has the most sustained turning of fighters today, including F-22. It's a powerful package - And this is why I feel this was a bad video presenting the JAS 39 Gripen. The capability it has was hardly touched upon. During the NATO operation "Unified Protector" over Lybia, the Canadian Lt.-Gen. Charles Bouchard repeatedly expressed regarding the Swedish contribution: “The Gripens have a strategic importance for the operation. They have a spectacular capability."

    While size wise it's similar to F-16, so is it not the same generation, it's the same generation as Rafale and EF plus arguably F-35 with the E version being a generation newer then F-35.
    The video gets something wrong, A in JAS does not stand for close ground support, it's surface attack as in anti-ship. Close air support is a tertiary function that up until recently had very little focus with the main anti-ground capability was those same anti-ship missiles having a cruise missile option against ground targets. SwAF have acquired laser guidance kits and guided bombs recently for NATO use.

      Its the generation when usa built no new fighters, as a result of that the generation have no name.

    • @Brissebrajan
      @Brissebrajan Місяць тому

    • @znail4675
      @znail4675 Місяць тому

      @@Brissebrajan That is the generic meaning of the words, but they have slightly different meaning in the military air jargon. Jakt corresponds to Fighter and includes any anti-air work like interception, air-superiority or escort. Attack refers to surface targets, both ground and sea, but not air.
      The main role of the Swedish air force is, in order of priority: Interception, Anti-shipping and Recon. Gripen is designed with those priorities and the order of the letters in JAS reflects that priority.
      USA and most NATO nations priorities Air-superiority and Ground support, that is why the video assumed Gripen was designed for that as well, but was wrong.

The Gripen 39 E got really good radar and counter meisures against other aircrafts. And sensors, that makes some jet outs there seems like complete garbage. I would say the Gripen 39 E is the best multi role aircraft out there for its price. So to add up what makes it a great fighter.
    Low cost/ maintenance. It's built for a crew of conscripts under supervisor of a technician to maintain/ re-supply.
    Short landing take off, can use highways etc.
    Low RCS/ Radar Cross Section, though classified statements of 1.0 - 0.1 square meter depending on model with a superior EW.
    Then add the Meteor missile, the best out there at the moment and the E takes 7 of them...who needs stealth with that low RCS, a radar and EW that pick you up before the enemy and then a missile that takes you out before you get close enough to do anything about it.
    It was part of Operation Karakal under NATO in Libya 2011 and also Sweden has been a partner of NATO (PFP) since 1993 so the NATO adjustment to Gripen was just normal. In the mid 90's Swedish military adjusted to NATO structure and ordersystem all over the military and in 1995 Sweden was under NATO command down to platoon level in for example Doboj in Bosnia.
    Now compare that to the F-16.... It sure beats Gripen in units sold and combat experience but then Google F-16 vs Gripen Red Flag USA and read some juicy stuff what American Air Force Generals and officer/ pilots say about Gripen.

Even thought I'm Swedish I don't really like the title of the video "Worlds Best" is very click baity. Yes, the Gripen is best in class in some respects and certainly not in others. Used in the right way it's a formidable fighter, but it can also be out classed when compared in firepower with the likes of Eurofighter Typhoon (can hold 15 meteor missiles compared to Gripen E's 7) and the even the Rafale can hold more missiles. But I'm still very proud of our great achievements with this system. And remember different jobs require different tools.

      Gripen 39 E got better sensors and radar than a Eurofighter typhoon. So those 15 missiles compared to gripen E´s 7 dont matter what so ever if u go on a 1vs1. If u can spot and down the other plane before it see u, then why does it matter how many missiles it can carry LOL? The Eurofighter cant take of from as short runways as a Gripen either. Its more expensive to maintain aswell. All of the aircrafts u mentioned is good, i dont have anything to say about that. But if u wanna maintain a cheap price, easy to maintain and so on, u pick the Gripen 39 E, NOT Eurofighter or Rafeal . Gripen is a multi role fighter, it can do survialance, it can do small bombing runs, and it got the stuff needed to do a dogfight aswell if needed. I would pick the Gripen 39 E over the aircrafts u mentioned, but if money was unlimited. I would have picked the F-35 Raptor or F-"22 instead of the 2 planes u talkt about

    • @hellmalm
      @hellmalm Місяць тому

      @@jimmiekarlsson4458 It's true interoperability and over all electronic warfare suite is better on the E, there's upgraded versions in the works of both the Tyhoon and the Rafal that probably will match this. The thing that will be harder to match is service ability because it's core design feature. I admit that the E will have a remarkably smalll RCS but it's not a stealth fighter, so why would I compare it to other stealth fighters? The 2 fighters I do campare the gripen with is the most similar canard fighters, with maneuverability and thrust to wight ratio that's comparable. All these "out flies" the F-35 (and so does the F-16) but the F-35 is real stealth fighter with all of it's advanced advantages. What I'm really looking forward to is the carrier version SAAB has begun working on. This would provide the British Royal navy with a cost effective alternativ to the F-35.

    This is the C variant, we have now at least 4 "test" E version Gripen, bigger, can take 4 more misiles, even better radar and jamming. Can like the c version supercruise, and land at 500m long ordinary small roads and be fueled and rearmed in ten minutes by only a crew of 5, one expert and 4 ordinary soldiers. If Sweden was 5 times bigger, i am sure that many more countries would be interested in Gripen c and the even better E variant. In red flag some years ago 4 Gripen C "shot down" 3 f16 of 4 and the last f16 had to escape. ( i am not sure about exactly the numbers but only one Gripen was hit. Even against F15 strike eagle 4 of them if i remember right? The gripens won by defetead 3 F15 and and only lost one of Gripen c . Personally i only think f22 f35 su 57is better, and maybe su 35 ??? And Gripen is nearly as good as Rafale and Eurofighter. Gripen is rather cheap and only costs 8000 dollars per flighthour (c variant) In the mid 60ths The J35 Draken also a deltawing, probably was better then the best russian fighters, and i believe it was maybe no 2 or 3 among al fighters in the world. It did the cobra manouver before the flankers. Sweden had in late 50ths and early 60ths the fith biggest fighterfleet in the world.

    The aircraft "Viggen" is not pronounced "V-eye-gen".
    It pronounce "Vigg-en", as in "vig-orous" and "en-gineering".
    It's a pun, first of all "Viggen" means "the tufted duck", keeping in line with the Swedish tradition of naming its aircraft after flying animals/beasts (dragon, griffin), but it can also mean "the thunderbolt", possibly referring to its orginal purpose as a nuclear bomber.
