- In this video, I drop a camera down a deep well at a pre-Civil War era hand dug well in Sharpsburg Maryland near the Antietam Battlefield. The well is over 40 feet deep and a little scary. If you are curious about how dug wells are constructed and used, this may be a video for you.
This is part one of a four-part exploration of this property. The owner, Brian, wanted me to check out the property to see what mysteries I might be able to uncover. We explore a stone-lined well, magnet fish the well, explore another mysterious underground chamber, and also metal detect the property.
About Aquachigger:
I enjoy metal detecting for historical items like gold coins, relics, silver coins, and other buried treasures. I also metal detect for gold and silver nuggets and even meteorites. I like to make videos that promote my choice of lifestyle that includes outdoor adventure,
metal detecting, yapping, searching for river treasure, SCUBA diving, exploring abandoned places, hiking, caving, caring for animals and pets, and observing the things outdoors that often go unnoticed by most people who are not familiar with outdoor adventures and nature. I keep my UA-cam "Aquachigger" channel family-friendly and hope you subscribe if you like my style.

How about a look into a hand-dug well? Now's your chance! ...lol. I hope you enjoy the video.
@aquachigger There’s some interesting stuff down there. Are you considering lowering a magnet down?
I always enjoy as you introduce us to how it was, long before my time. I'm always fascinated by the ingenuity of the pioneers who paved the way.
Sir how did they make the well?
I thought if you dug it like a mine shaft it would be square, I appreciate a circle is structurally stronger.
Perhaps a back garden project for you.
All the best
The well looks to be in good shape, to me. Im impressed by the rock lined wall. Had to take a lot of labor and rocks to build it.
Black slave labor of that time period. All work done. No debate. None. Other race was watching and drinking sweet tea. No popcorn.
Thanks, Beau. I will always be amazed at the construction of these wells. Continuing education.
I agree.
Oh my gosh that was so cool 😎. Not much down there, but my goodness! The work that went into building that well is unbelievable. The way each stone was placed very carefully 😮. Must have taken a very long time.
Thank you for sharing this chig 😊
Workin for a well drilling company replacing well pumps in that area, I get to see these cool wells from time to time, but never with a gopro to see what may be lying at the bottom. Pretty cool!
I just can't imagine digging that hole, being in there while you do it, and lining it with rocks. Incredible!
All built by blacks in that Maryland time period. That whole well. No debate.
Cool video Beau! I could see what looks like old spitoons (possibly 2) and then what looked to me like a brass or bronze bell (blackened from age)! Should send the magnet down for the hell of it!
I think it is a key.
I have a hand dug stone laid well just like that on my property mine is only 35 feet deep and was dug in 1880 we still pump and use the water out of it for the house
I have one also. 40’ and still pump water from it. 👍
You hand dug a well in 1880? Hang in there old timer.
@@tonka5 Lol no I have a hand dug well I didn't dig it 😆😆👍
The water is so clear. Wow that was exciting!😊
One pot that has a story to tell...
Flower Pot or a THUNDER MUG😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hey, Matt from demolition ranch could use some help with some cave exploration! You should take a look!
Amazing that was dug by hand.
Very satisfying, for some unknown reason. Loved it.
Hey Aquachigger are you going to accept Demolition Ranch's invite to explore the caves on his abandoned resort?? Because that would be awesome!
A peek into a place we would otherwise never see. Very interesting!
Run that through your mind for a minute. Can you imagine how extremely difficult that would have been for them at that time. Honestly that could have been one man that did that by himself. I greatly appreciate the well cams. Even though normally there's nothing there. This one actually had some pretty interesting stuff.
A bunch of black slaves your dad brought over here did this well. No debate. Blacks built it.....Whites drinking sweet tea chatting ,passing gas and watching.
The hand labor it took to build that well!
Black slave head labor. No osha...no lunchbreaks....no happiness...no coffee breaks.
Great job!👍 Makes you really appreciate what well diggers had to go through to make them! Imagine being at the bottom of a hole that deep and bailing to keep it dry while working! Thanks for the trip down!👍
Chig was rightfully worried about the cover seeing as how the previous one was at the bottom of the well.
Interesting. The structure of the well looks to be in great shape.
Because the black slaves built it back then You don't remember?????
Retro Aquachigger! I thoroughly enjoyed that. Thank you!
Holy smokes! That is a deep well!! How in the world did someone back then dig that??!!
Shovel and slave labor
Stacked stone walls are amazing.
Cool well Chigg, I love finding old wells in the woods 👋👍
Good afternoon from Southeast South Dakota
Dang! The whole time I was waiting for a jump scare to pop out of a rock or something.😂 Happy Halloween!
I had the dubious honor of falling into one of these old wells in Texas some years back. Same construction, only a little narrower - and quite a few snakes!
Is your name Jessica?
That is a beautifully made well. Thanks for showing it.
Interesting look at the way things used to be done. Must have been a big effort to lug all those rocks. They probably found the water with divining rods.
Beautiful stone work.
Thank your elder black guy neighbor. Slave labor for free. No lunchbreaks. Don't thank his black skinnyjean rupaul type rappin grandson.
the thing about those old wells is the residents protected them like they were gold. a good well meant staying on the land or having to leave. they didnt just randomly toss junk down their wells.
Because the blacks built that well. Maryland? In that time period? No debate. Straight black slaves. White guy drinking tea watching.
There are a few documented cases where they did just that. At Wise's Farm in Fox's Gap on South Mountain, just east of Boonsboro, MD there were many bodies of dead Confederates tossed down the well there. I know of another instance of such a body disposal in a well, again of Confederates in Washington County. Chig's come to help me try to find it, but it'll take ground penetrating radar to really find it at this point.
Chigg, this is better than "Oak Island .
Would have been interesting to lay the rope out to see the depth of the well as length on the grass lawn. I wonder how they dug them and lined them without it caving in on the well digger? It was so beautifully clean all the way down there, and just a bit of debris on the bottom.
That was kewl, Chigg. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride.
Is it my imagination, or did anyone else notice a void on the other side of the well's stone wall?
It amazes me how many of these types of wells where rocks line the walls like this stay put for who knows how long.
I thought l saw a void too, cool stuff
The walls are masterpieces
Looks like they must have dug the hole about 8 ft wide and then lined it with 2 ft walls. Nice clear water down there.
Black people were ingenious back then before integration with whites.smh. Black slave labor built 700 more wells like this one for free too.
Anyone see what looked like the remains of a shoe at the edge of the well shortly after submerging??? look on the left wall early in video. Also noticible in a later shot. Looked at it a number of times. Possibly a rock but sure looks like possible leather with tear in toe...
Awesome
I think the well is amazing, what a lot of back breaking work that must have been!
@aquachigger how on earth did they line something so deep with stones?
....and your question is exactly what the greek historian named herodotus asked when he came to egypt pyramids up close. Because egypt was built by black ethiopians. Do your homework.
Amazing.......that took some time to build👍
Awesome. Thanks for sharing this 👍💯 amazing.
Beautiful thumbnail/opening transition 🤌
Amazing how they dug all that way down there.and linedit with lime stone and it stays there.thanks😊
Very cool!!
That is one beautiful well.....
Darn nap time gets me again!
Awesome video
There's something around what appears to be a cup that looks, well, machined. Might be worth going mag fishing 🙂
Looked like a wood-handled ladle. that someone dropped!
@@hamshackleton Would be worth dropping something down in there to retrieve whatever it is 🙂
@@monkeybarmonkeyman - Chig is daft enough to climb down!
Nice clean walled well!
The rock stacking is epic. It appears to be in at least two layers and is surviving very nicely without a spec of mortar.
Its hard enough to dry stack stone in a basic wall. But in a confined space, far below grade, dug by hand, and perfectly cylindrical? Insane
Great video. Made me dizzy when it was spinning underwater lol
I hate to admit this and sound like a total kid, but the minute that camera started going down the well I got excited and blurted, "YES!! ADVENTURE! GO GO GO!" LOL!
If only they had these for Oak Island and zero silt.. oh man.. Thanks for the video!
Can you imagine the day they put the pipes down the well 🪣no more buckets 😊
4:58 Looks like a white fresh water Amphipod (Scud) hanging off the rock near center screen, nice catch!
there were some pretty big worms down there too, creepy!
Damn. It's a shame they didn't have go-pros and I phones way back then. I wish we could have seen how large the original hole was and how they got all those rocks all the way down there and fitted them so they don't collapse. No way could this be done today. And I've read to many Stephen King books to dare to venture down a hole like that.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
If I remember, I'll make a video about how they dug wells like that.
THAT would be awesome Chig!👍😛😎
Nice video 👍👍❤️
it amazez me how them rocks just stay in place without caving in all those years pure professional craftsmanship
7:29 see the scratched square on the top rock with a symbol? inside it
That whole rock looks symmetrical because you are seeing a mirrored reflection of it from the surface, making random patterns appear to be man-made.
Very cool definitely some metal stuff down there as well as a pot
The labor it took to dig then build the stone wall liner is incredible.
Wow impressive, someone was busy
i bet it took a long time to pack those rocks. looks amazing
2:22 looks like a silver coin at the 4 oclock position on a rock not to far down. 5:02 a tarnished brass key with a wire on it that is wrapped around a rock at the 7oclock position. Later in the video you see it is clearly a key. Ceramic bowl in center under the pipes with the broken top of a mason jar next to it. A brick next to something corrugated either siding or corrogated tin. 6:09 next to the Jar lid is what could be a u shaped broken necklace link could be silver or just aluminum. Of course the metal tin you pulled up in the next video. Imagine having to stack all those rocks all the way up the well.
Cool video chigg! Look like an old shoe sitting off to the left side as soon as the camera started into the water ?
Here in the uk theres fair few wells and small mines , on my mates farm theres a well with a side tunnel half way down ive stuck over 70 meters of drain rods in there an it keeps going an going id love to pump the water out and have a look
These videos creep out my claustrophobia but I have to watch them just to see what may be inside. Thanks Chigg!
I'm curious about the photo you used as at the beginning of the video , that caught my eye as soon as the camera went under the water, Any Idea' s on what that is ? It looked like cut stone or something man made the triangles looked to perfect to be just something natural ? That got me to thinking , a great well video it was very similar to one I dropped a camera down on a civil war era farm. Thanks Chigg.
Aloha Chigg! #1. Most important! Find someone who can divine (find) water with forked mulberry stick in dry season. Dig down with shovel 10'. Brace with 8 to 10 vertical boards. Use cross bracing as ladder. Dig10 more feet. More bracing. Repeat until you find water then another 5 feet or? Looked like two layers stone. Last section of pipe may need replacement before long. Soonah mo bettah. Mahalo nui loa!
Really clear water
Interesting shapes and possibilities at the bottom. Will there be follow-up? Crocs, swords, or ???. Once again, you keep us hanging! Thanks as always for sharing as I look forward to more!
nice video
cool
What could they be standing on to place those rocks?
Deep well lots fallen debree !!!
I enjoyed that
I'd sure like to know how they line those with rock from the top down ... seems like to add the layer below would make the other layers collapse ... Very cool ... and very skilled craftsmanship! (I certainly hope those were not claw marks on those rocks at the end!) Thanks, Chigg! - Muddypaw 🐾
Blacks did all that labor for free. Extremely perfect. They built 800+ more the same way for free.
Nice well.
It looked like some good sliver or lead ore samples.
Those are some crazy worms on the rocks there at 7:38 !
Can’t imagine digging that well
Not just the digging of the well but shoring the sides up with the rocks so it doesn’t cave in over time. Dang you dig and dig..then someone lowers buckets of stones to you. All the while water is creeping up you ankles! I’m sure whoever came up with the ring film was fascinated by this as much as throwing little demons down them. And video taping it.
Interesting how those rocks just stay in place they look like they were just fall and crumble into the well. Plus there’s a lot of big gaps surprised the dirt doesn’t go in there.
Mr. Auquachigger, did you ever get your drone back out of the cave you lost it in, two or three years ago in California? Was it a drone or a go-pro? I'm wondering about that. This video reminded me of that video. Ha!
A mason jar top.A pot or large white cup, burnt lumber, I knew there would be rocks and water. But when I saw that cup or pot thing I could hear Chiggs voice in my head saying maybe a pot filled with gold coins!
A friend of mine keeps saying, "Cheer up man, things could be a lot worse, you could be in an underground hole full of water."
I know he means well.
Hey Chigg and your friends
Hi, was that a large punch/chisel that they dug with?
is that a marble in the first part of the video?
Right under the top of the water?
Wow, I'm really early...
I have dug wells like that multiple times.
Can you Then you imagine all the bricks thousands of bricks chigger how long did they take to build that crazy enjoy that I thought we find something good but as the way it is. Noggin the young man did the same thing. Love your 🙋♂️🐈🐈
There's something at the 8:08 mark that looks like a can to me.
It might be interesting to some viewers if you marked your lowering rope in feet or metres, so we get an impression of how deep the well is. Can you tell by feel (or torchlight) when the camera reaches the water, so we get an idea of how deep the water is IN the well?
It was about 45 feet deep.
Hey Chig what is that stuck between the rocks at the 7:27 time stamp
How possibly could that be done by hand!!??
😮👍👍🔥
6:58 the black hinged piece,t the topright hand side zoom in whats that.
And tones of Wood Opal down there.
👍👍
Two Nimrods were out in the Bush and discovered an huge hole. They couldn't see the bottom of it. Noticing and old FordOmatic Transmission nearby they struggled and threw it in trying to hear the splash. All of the sudden a goat flashed by and dove into the hole.
About that time the landowner appeared and and asked about his goat. He said it must be nearby as I had tied it to an old Transmission!
It may have been constructed from the top downward like our old brick well 28' deep.
