Nick Lowe is an underappreciated songwriting genius.
“And So It Goes” is such a great Nick Lowe song. I need to check him out more.. of course, “Cruel to be Kind” was a hit, but I’m otherwise unaware. Thanks (& others) for pointing out that Nick Lowe wrote this one… a fact I’d forgotten.
Amen
@@tedcole9936 when Elvis tours with Nick Lowe he bills song as “a song Nick wrote and I stole.”
Classic "Elvis Costello and the Attractions!". FANTASTIC group performing a great Nick Lowe song with deep meaning... back when EC was known as "the angry young man".
right- this is/or could be ROCKPILE w/ Costello singing, that's how much it reminds me of Nick Lowe.
This cut was my anthem years ago. The message surely applies in today's world. Timeless.
Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson...two very intense cats with an odd look to them and voices that also weren't quite the accepted norm either who managed to push through all of that to attain a certain level of stardom in the late 70's and early 80's because the songs were just so frigging great.
I'll add Graham Parker to that trio.
My favorite by him is Everyday I Write The Book, which I believe came out in 1983! That video has a couple of actors portraying Prince Charles and Lady Diana! Check it out if you have a chance!
Elvis Costello has been my favourite artist since i was around 12 and I'm 57 now and he is still my favourite, his song writing skill is incredible and many artists ask him to write for them, the song Alison is up there with my favourites. 🍻🙏
As a huge Elvis Costello fan, can’t help but add my 2cents on this. At least in America, this track came at the end of Costello’s 3rd LP called “Armed Forces” which was strongly themed with metaphors between War and Personal Relationships.. for example, “Two Little Hitlers” “Oliver”s Army” Goon Squad” and Green Shirts” all brought WWII references into a contemporary/personal context. So this “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace, Love and Understanding” was a beautiful way to wrap up the album. Such a Masterpiece, this album. Bravo for this request, good reaction, Angela. ✌🏼❤️💡
Well put! I am a huge fan also....Armed Forces is such a great album....or, as he was going to call it "Emotional Fascism". Chemistry Class is one of my favorites, but hey, they are all great.
@@wpollock1 ah, yes, I forgot Chemistry Class…! “Are you ready for the Final Solution?” Perfect example, that one slipped my mind. 👍🏽
WWII? Olivers Army mostly references the 1960s/70s conflict in Northern Ireland ...
@x3nine- thanks, mea culpa on Oliver’s Army, but Goon Squad “…not going to make a lampshade out of me”. And Two Little Hitlers, clearly WWII. Thanks for the info.
Elvis is a musical 'scholar' as well as a great musician and song writer...
Thank you for playing Elvis. One of my all time favorites! I knew about him as he released his 1st song, "Watching the Detectives" on the British punk label, 'Stiff Records". The labels saying was " If ain't Stiff it aint' worthy a f....k". Saw him many times over the years, I'm 69 and still listen to songs by punk greats Sex Pistols, The Damned, the Clash and many others not as famous as the mentioned. Tidbit. If you like Billy Idol check out Generation X the band he fronted before he went solo. I think you'll enjoy them.
Love the STIFF box set on CD… it seems there are various versions of it, but I love mine!! Only saw Costello twice in concert -small college gym in upstate NY ca. 1979 and outdoor venue in the 90s Brutal Youth tour. Great both times!
I got turned on to Elvis Costello when I was 14. Most of the kids where I grew up didn't get him at the time, but I always loved his honesty
Elvis is still touring, and he puts on a great show. It’s easy to forget how many hits he’s had. The song selection wheel at his gigs is iconic.
His band is amazing, the first half of the show was okay, but the last 45 minutes or so were the best I have ever seen and heard in any concert, with Pump it up, Allison and many of his new ones, where he once again showed his skill to build up and then release a lot of energy in songs.
OF COURSE it was a good song. :D
As prolific of a songwriter that Costello is, Nick Lowe actually wrote this one.
Thanks!
Took the words right out of my mouth.
Nick is quite a good songwriter used to have his album with Cruel To Be Kind etc and Dave Edmunds is good too
fun fact, this video was shot on location in Vancouver, BC.
Elvis has so many great songs. My favourites are "Watching the Detectives" and "Beyond Belief"
I love Elvis Costello. My favourite songs have to be Alison, Pump it Up, The Other Side of Summer, Sweet Pear and his cover of ShipBuilding..
Angela, great reaction to a great song. As I write this we are fast approaching the 50th anniversary of the song, first published and recorded in 1974. Written by Nick Lowe, performed by his band Brinsley Schwarz. Then Elvis recorded the song which was produced by Nick Lowe. Elvis had the biggest hit but I don’t think it was technically a released single. The Boss later recorded it live with a whole bunch of stars at a benefit concert. And I just discovered from about 3 years ago the cover I’m going to recommend. The artist is Sharon Van Etten she has a featured singer with her Josh Homme and the video was made during lockdown so only family members were in each environment so no masks had to be used on camera. It is a fully endorsed performance as in the video there’s a cameo of an elder man with his guitar and dog sitting in a back yard. That’s Nick Lowe in for me was a goosebumps moment after hearing Sharon and Josh give a slower more serious take on this song. This song is still relevant now maybe even more than 50 years ago, if you think about our current times. This song has been one of May top favorite songs of all my life. I did get to see Nick with Rockpile his collaboration with Dave Edmunds play twice. Concerts of my life. I hope this song will qualify for a Female Friday or such it is most worthy and needs to be noticed more than it has. I hope you like it as much as I do. Here’s a link.

love ELVIS
Greatest song by Elvis and I love her little dance she's beyond adorable 😊
Check out "Almost Blue." It was a crusher to hear a little while back in another life but it's such a beautiful song.
It's awesome how DayOne reacts to a song that's over 35 years old. Meaning, this music is timeless and those that discover it will move and groove to the beat that is magic.
written in 74
song is about to turn 50 years old
"Watching The Detectives"
(She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake.)
One of the best covers. Ever.
One of the best songwriters ever.
Please react to more of his music! Favourites of mine are 'Everyday I Write the Book', 'Alison', and 'Almost Blue'.
Haven’t listen to Elvis in years!!! Gotta download some of his stuff. Thanks for the great reaction as always!!
Go for it… “Get Happy” is a fantastic album: 20 tracks, came out 10 tracks per side on LP, averaging 3 minutes per track. Incredible. “Spike” “This Years Model” “Armed Forces” and of course, “My Aim Is True” are all fantastic albums.
Listen to his new album. His voice's gotten even rougher and a bit hoarse, but all of those songs are masterpieces imho.
My band has done a cover of this song for a few years. It's a really fun song to play and the lyrics have been very appropriate in the last couple years.....who am I kidding, they have been appropriate for as long as I can remember due to the human attributes of greed, jealousy, anger, intolerance and need for power causing seemingly endless wars and abuse.
Good taste for your band to play the song. I think your notion of what causes war is a bit naive, however. The Globalist cabal of rich elite internationalist bankers and government puppet politicians/cronies, using Socialism as their tool of servitude of the masses, have been orchestrating war ever since the Bolshevik revolution until today. Case in point is the Ukraine puppet state of the global elites vs the quasi independent state of corrupt Russia.
@@rolandowagner7775 Ukraine has had issues with corruption, but it has been gradually improving over the last 10-15 years and I don't think think they are a "puppet state of the global elites" because of their increasing alliance with Europe and antagonism toward their Slavic neighbor. As far as Russia, I heard an analyst with extensive experience in studying Russian history say that Russia's attitude toward the West "hasn't changed since Ivan The Terrible" and that they've had an inferiority complex that has caused chronic aggression and militarization. All I know is "the world done gone crazy"! 😁
@@RockDocNeal Yes, the world has gone crazy but a lot of it has been orchestrated by the International elite cabal. Have you heard of the World Economic Forum which evolved from the Council of Foreign relations, the UN, Bilderbergs, Club of Rome, etc etc?. The EU was being planned for decades by this cabal before it was rolled out. They pretended like the EU was all about economics, common currency, etc. No, it was to take sovereignty away from individual nations and give power to a group of unelected globalist bureaucrats. Enter, Ukraine and the fake color revolution making it a puppet state. Have you heard of Burishma and the kids of Biden, Romney, Pelosi getting millions? Do some research. Glen Beck is one of MANY that did hours of investigative reporting on it. Obviously, I'm only skimming the surface of it.
Ok, anybody who likes Elvis Costello is worth a sub. One of my favorite artists with a style undeniably all his own.
loved it when he and Nick Lowe did this together on rooftop in NYC
oh wow it looks like Nick is actually playing bass on this
The video was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Yeah more good stuff. He’s an amazing artist. You gotta do Pump It Up by him and eventually you should get to Joe Jackson
Best song.
Angela, you are a beautiful woman, keep up the good work. I was 18 when this song came out, still asking the same question today
that wasn't just a good song. this is a legendary song.
dancing queen.
LOVE this song! LOVE your dancing!!!!!!!!
Elvis is married to Diana Krall, a renowned jazz pianist.
So many under-rated Elvis Costello songs like New Amsterdam and A Good Year for the Roses
I love it when you kind of dance to the music. As a musician, that's always been my goal when playing live is for the audience to be mostly dancing. Because when that happens, there's just such a connection between that and this live thing called music that we are just all sharing at the same time. It's a great feeling.
An underappreciated aspect of this song is that it is genuine. He wants to know. He wants those things.
First wave punk was pretty nihilistic. A reaction to hippie utopian idealism that spluttered out in the early 70s.
It took folks like The Clash and Elvis Costello to recontextualize that movement into a social good. Working towards a better tomorrow.
At that time a lot of punk rock was quite bleak and fairly nihilistic. The world sucks so be destructive. A nobody wins game.
EC and The Clash said you can do better. You can change things to the better by positive action.
Not my favorite EC song, but it does not suck.
For most of the song, Steve Nieve is using Elvis Costello's guitar and miming those parts -- probably because they weren't going to haul one of his keyboards out to the park for the shots. That last shot of them in the park when it's dark -- that was right before they got kicked out of it for being there past sunset. Also, that final shot of them in the corridor was when they were literally being woken up in the morning to shoot the video. Obviously, they're not morning people.
As other Costello fans have already commented, Elvis is fabulous and goes back to the 70s. He's still touring now and is just as good if not better. An intelligent artist, his lyrics are usually brilliant but had the genius of Nick Lowe here. Your music choices are certainly various. From a similar era, try Pop Muzik by M or Jilted John by Jilted John.
I'm not sure he is better - live anyway. I love his songs and saw him perform live last year. He's getting on a bit. His voice was shot on the night to the extent you couldn't recognise some of the famous melodies because he had very limited range. It reminded me of Bob Dylan's vocal performances which have become more monotone.. but maybe I saw him on a bad night..
Watching the detective is a song from Elvis Costello
You've got the moves ☺️
Shipbuilding by Elvis Costello
one of the greatest anti-war songs ever written
Listen to PUMP IT UP 😎
Pump It Up is a must.
By "Elvis Costello and the Attractions"
Lots of Vancouver in this video.
Lots of recommendations for "Watching the Detectives" here, but I'm going to recommend "Accidents Will Happen" because it's a great song.
Absolutely love them both. Great picks.
My favorite Elvis Costello tune has to be Every Day l Write the Book. It has a Reggae vibe.
You should listen to "People Who Died" by the Jim Carroll Band
As relevant today as it was then!
Would love to watch you react to Bobby Fuller doing “I Fought the Law.”
This is actually a Nick Lowe song. If you want to do a great Nick Lowe song, I recommend my favourite 'So It Goes.'
For more varying sides to Elvis's music, please try Red Shoes, Pump It Up, and the ballad " She"
you should check out "Pump It Up" - now THAT'S catchy!!
Listen to his wife Diana Krull
I always wonder if he met his wife Dianna Krall whilst filming this video.
is there a time machine I can buy..
Watch the film Lost in Translation and you really enjoy this song 🙌
I would suggest his song pump it up or try I don't want to go to chelsea
Did you hear the lyrics?
P&L
Nick Lowe wrote it.
React to Kenny Chesney, “every where I go”. Also “better as a memory”. Reminiscing songs.
I think Elvis Costello is going for kind of a Buddy Holly vibe with his image.
Also patterned his early performance persona a lot after his dad… Somewhere I saw a clip of Elvis”s father on stage. Some talk show with EC as guest? Was it Conan? Can’t recall.
Everyday I Write The Book is a great sing by him
Armed Forces (1979)
You have to understand this was written in the late seventies with anger over political divides, gas shortages, high inflation and war. Glad we were able to get over that. Oh wait...
74
england was a mess
My fav from him is “Watching the Detectives” and “I don’t like Mondays”… Also; “I Want You”…. This one… not so much…
“I Don’t Like Mondays” is actually by The Boomtown Rats, and IS a great song worth checking out!
Ck out this vid of Elvis Costello and Fiona Apple: ua-cam.com/video/9iP6obyOLnQ/v-deo.html
Elvis was great and became even greater. Nick Lowe wrote a nice song here, but it's not even the best song of the album.
Was never a big fan. Very Springsteen ish but another one I wasn’t big on. Sorry.
Nothing remotely Springsteenish about this guy. Try again.
