@@SuperDeuser Lenin was ethnically not Russian, in the way we think about being Russian today. He was born in the Russian Empire, but in Tatarstan (or Kazan), which was one of the peripheries of the Russian state. It was independent at one time, however it was enrolled into the Empire in the early 18th century. His father's ethnicity is up for debate, but his father was likely not ethnically Russian, but instead a mix of Turkic descent. His mother was a mix of Jewish, on the paternal side, and German-Swedish on the maternal side. Therefore, as mentioned before, Lenin was not ethnically Russian.

Hitler was German. You should look into the unification wars and the Zollverein. You'll learn that phrases like "the Jewish question" were not alien and Nazi, but very German. During this period they had the German question. And the main focus was whether there would be a Greater German solution or a Lesser German solution. The former being the formation of Germany which included Austria, favoured by the Austrians, and the latter without Austria, favoured by the Prussians. Basically this was a rivalry between Prussia and Austria, which was settled by the Austro-Prussian war, though the unification was more complex than I'm making it sound. Really what worked for the Prussians was the ceeding of the Rhineland, especially the Ruhr, during the Congress of Vienna. We could talk about this all day. Hitler was a German though. Why do you think he was allowed to join the military of the German Empire? He wasn't some special Austro-Hungarian attache. He got written permission, because in those days being German was still very much an ethnic group beyond a state. Anschluss was also argued for by the Nazis using this well established concept. I think you probably know this. You may be making the mistake of looking at things from a contemporary perspective. It's pretty common. It's really what separates a history enjoyer and a history academic.

Depends on how you define being German. Ethnically he probably was German but his nationality was Austrian. Later he became stateless which became more and more of a problem for him and his ambitions. So he tried to become a German citizen which was actually not easy for him. He tried 7 times till he succeeded. He and his supporters actually needed a trick to make him a German citizen. The interior minister of Thuringia appointed him as an official which automatically made him a German citizen by law.

I think a lot of people - at least Americans - vastly underestimate how much the break up of Austria-Hungry and the post-WW1 chaos that gripped central Europe enabled the rise of Nazi Germany and Hitler. Had countries like Hungary and Romania not been in such bad shape following the war, they may not have allied themselves with the Nazis and cooperated with Hitler, allowing the Nazis to annex Austria and Czechoslovakia. And had the countries Hitler did conquer, Austria and Czechoslovakia, not been so beaten up in the 1920s and 30s, maybe they would have been better suited to stand up to Nazi Germany? After all, had Hitler been stopped from annexing Austria, whose to say he would have stayed in power? Or that the Nazis would have remained as popular, as in control of Germany if they faced setbacks from diplomatic missteps?

This video isn't exactly incorrect, but it doesn't quite emphasize the topic of German unification enough.
After the French Revolution and the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire by Napoleon, nationalist and liberal movements were on the rise. Many people in German Central Europe favoured some form of unification amongst the separate German states. First, there was a loose Lesser German Confederation. Over time, the culturally German states began to unify under Prussia. Being culturally German, there were calls within Austria to join this Pan-German formation into a Greater German state. The problem was the Austrian state was more than just Austria. The Austrian Empire consisted of Germans, Hungarians, Ukrainians, Poles, Slovaks, Czechs, and more. Joining an ethnically & culturally German nation would mean abandoning most of the Empire.
After The First World War, the Austria-Hungarian Empire was broken up into several nation-states. Austria was now mostly a purely German state. Once again there was a movement to follow others, such as Saxony and Bavaria. However (as noted in the video) the Treaty of Versailles prohibited Austrian entry into a Greater German state. Hitler would ignore this (along with the rest of the treaty), and annexed Austria into the Third Reich in 1938. Unlike the acquisitions of Czechia, Poland, ect..., Austria was directly incorporated into Germany, with the people being considered Germans. After the fall of Nazi Germany, Austria would be occupied by the Western Allies before regaining independent, democratic control some decade later. The idea of Austria joining a Greater Germany became associated with Nazism. To this day, it's not a a significant political question in German nor Austrian politics.
In summary, the reason Hitler was able to become leader of Germany was because many didn't perceive him as a foreigner (some did, and derided him politically for it). Austria was seen as the last independent German state that had yet to join a Greater Germany to many. This may seem bizarre, but consider how in your own country places have differences. Vermont is not New Jersery, for example. Bavaria is different than Berlin. West Germany & East Germany in general still have differences. But, regardless, they all do share similarities with each other that they consider themselves one nation. It's possible the question of Austria joining into Germany may come up again in the future (hopefully under more auspicious circumstances), but time will tell. Austria itself is smaller in population than 3 of the German states, so it's more an ideological question than a practical one.

Saying Hitler was not German is dumb. Because what matters is the etny. Even today, citizenship in Europe keep being based in bloodline. Doesn't matter the actual country borders.
When he say he's German, he's saying he's Germanic, not from the country Germany.
That border thing is an American thing, american countries adopted that, because the population is too diverse.
But even if we consider border AND blood as requirements for him become a German:
    Ethnically:
1- He born with German blood
    Politically:
2- After he rised to the government, HE HAVED THE POWER TO DECIDE WHO IS GERMAN.

People who say he was "Austrian" don't understand that Hitler was born in 1989 in the Habsburgian Empire, which was not a national state. The concept of Austrian nationality did not exist back then. Subjects of the Empire identified as Hungarians, Serbians, Italiens or Germans but not as "Austrians". Eperor Franz Joseph did not see himself as Ruler of a nation but as an Emperor by devine right with loyal subjects
Austria as a national state originated from the treaties in Versailles and Saint Germain in 1919. Hitler was 30 years old at that time and did not live in Austria.

All those people here stating that Hitler was German because of his ethnicity and therefore was not a foreigner are missing an important point: what counts when you try to get political power in a country is your citizenship not your ethnicity. I'm not saying it's impossible to take over a country without being a citizen but it is harder. And despite his German ethnicity, Hitler was not a German citizen, which actually was a problem for him. Initially, he was a citizen of Austria-Hungary then of the Republic of Austria and then he became stateless. He tried to become a German citizen and was rejected 6 times. Then the interior minister of Thuringia helped him with a trick. He assigned him as a low rank official. This automatically granted him German citizenship by law.

Corsica is an italic region which makes Napoleon more italian than he is French, how ever when the republic of Genoa (An italian republic which owned Corsica at the time) sold the island to France that made Napoleon legally French when he was born despite being an Italian in ethnicity.

That is a common misconception, that the German people voted Schnurbartmann ( Mustache Man, in German) into office. In Germany, even to this day, the President chooses the Chancellor. Through a combination of guile and intimidation, President von Hindenburg was persuaded to appoint Schnurbartmann as his Chancellor. Then, after the Reichstag fire, the Reichstag passed an Enabling Act, effectively making Schnurbartmann dictator of Germany.
