"It's immoral to let a sucker keep his money". Well, that's what the seasoned con artist would
    say.
This cheeky motto might seem like a tongue-in-cheek justification for their crafty heists. But
let's face it, sometimes it's hard to muster sympathy for their victims, especially when you
hear about the outlandish scams they've fallen for.
We've all heard about how some poor soul was taken for a ride by an outlandish con and
thought "how could anyone ever fall for that?!"
From the silver-tongued religious cult leaders who can convince their followers to part with
fortunes, to the ambitious street urchins executing a flawless Three-Card Monte, the art of the
scam is as diverse as it is cunning. And then there are those budding con artists, forever on
the lookout for an unsuspecting investor to swindle with their too-good-to-be-true get-rich-
    quick-schemes.
But hold on, aren't we smarter these days? In our era of information overload, shouldn't it be
harder to pull the wool over our eyes? Unfortunately, not. If anything, it makes it easier!
We're just as vulnerable to scams today as our ancestors were centuries ago. The allure of a
quick win or a life-changing opportunity blinds even the savviest among us. [1]
But don't lose hope. There's good news! The psychology behind these scams is timeless. The
charismatic grifter, the vulnerable mark, and the promise of turning dreams into reality -
these elements remain unchanged. What evolves are the disguises these tricks wear to stay
one step ahead. So, they might have a facelift, but inside these cons are literally the oldest
    trick in the book!
In fact, some scams are so brilliantly simple, they've barely changed at all. Why fix what ain't
    broken, right?

I recently came to learn that facial salons are pretty much scams, and one I feel really salty about is Hermetise. It is so damn expensive, and I gave in because of all the emotional manipulation.
Also, I know of a sales organisation that supposedly raises donations for charities in Australia but spends an incredible amount of money on the staff, like all expenses travel and accommodation to solicit donors in new locations. Well, maybe that's just MLM and salespeople in general but this one really irks me because people believe they are really donating for a good cause. I really wonder how much goes to the charities.

      @Neoprenesiren 8 місяців тому +4

Although the face has much thinner skin compared to other parts of the body, there exists no good reason for 99% of skin care products to cater to the face specifically.
For example did you know that those dark bags under your eyes are actually just bruising from rubbing? Since the skin near the orbital bone is so thin that small amount of bruising is easily visible. The solution to eyebags is to simply stop touching your face so much and let the bruising heal. (For instance if your eyes ache use some eye drops to soothe it, instead of rubbing.)
But what do these companies do? They sell you a pipe dream that their products will wash it all away for you (ironically rubbing your face with these creams and what not will actually make the problem worse.) At most if the product is actually real and not snake oil it only covers up the bruising. But really you want to stop rubbing your eyes and let the bruising heal over a few weeks.
Now sometimes the face can be sensitive and they formulate things specifically for that, but the skin on your face is similar to any other skin on your body. Just that it's more sensitive and thinner.

The "Red Cross", is a SCAM!!! Only %5 of donations actually go towards helping. The rest is spent on CEO's, Lobbyists, Trips, and buildings/vans to get free blood; Which, they sell to hospitals for $1000 per pint!!!

The Roaring Twenties actually began in 1921, several months after newly elected President Warren G. Harding was inaugurated that spring. In 1920, when Charles Ponzi's scam was active, America was suffering a major economic depression caused mainly by Progressive President Woodrow Wilson's new taxes and business regulations left over from World War I, not to mention the lawlessness that ensued after Wilson suffered a major stroke. It was a very unpredictable time, and business/financial scams thrive in unpredictable and heavily regulated markets, because nobody has a clue what the rules are nor any idea of when they might be breaking laws. Enter the investment scammer claiming that he knows how to get clients the profits without the legal risks...

Steal a painting, make copies, sell the copies as originals, and the buyers will not want to report it because nobody wants to admit that they have been scammed. I'm not a fan of everything that flies although I've got an open mind and don't generalise too much. If you want classical art, buy it. Or buy a reproduction. People buy "modern art" as an investment, not because they are into it.....unless it's actually interesting. It's not a scam either. Nice try though.

I feel like one really good way to detect a scam is to tell another person about it. All the charisma, and emotional manipulation is left out. The only thing they hear is the stripped down version, if your friend/family gives you a weird look at say it sounds sketchy it's best to avoid it. It's the same phenomena that lets friends accurately gauge that person you're dating is a douchebag well before you ever find out.

I am not so sure about that. If anything, we are so aware of scams nowadays that the only thing we don't suspect is a scam is an actual scam.
Oddly enough, there may be scammers who actually tell you exactly how to make a fortune, and the real scam is pulled by nurturing a dependence upon the scammer who is supposedly the expert. And the word EXPERT does seem to be the keyword here.

The fact that the big scams seldom ever carry penalties which match the damage done, especially in the modern day, is a big part of the reason why they keep happening and constantly become more prevalent. Basic street-level pickpockets often face more jail time than multimillion dollar con artists. Until that changes, we cannot say we live in a just and reasonable society.

To be fair, I think legit forgery paintings (like ones you'd see in _White Collar_ ) are just as valuable as the original. Because if you can create a fake, down to finding an obscure pigment that doesn't contain Strontium-90 or some shit to really mask it, then that's more impressive in my opinion 🤷‍♂️

First off you're getting something "tangible"(a massive and beautiful real estate development typically) 2nd "it only costs money"(like getting a College education another one of the Greatest Scams ever.) People are simply told to part with their money...theft, taxation, anarchy, obliviousness, incompetence, being a bon vivant as a lifestyle choice for the masses, the importance of using credit in every matter, having a Bank, internal combustion Motors...on and on and on it all goes...all it costs is billions trillions bazillions bazillion trillions...with eventually the crisis be about arguing over who gets the last physical one US cash dollar. The problem can be near instantly resolved if people decide in the USA to suddenly not consume or what is known as a "boycott"...that includes paying anyone for *SERVICES RENDERED* as well. The part I don't understand is why pickpocketing counts as a "con". It's theft, common street crime, doesn't require outsmarting the victim or even allowing them some defence. Often times it's helped by physical threat, in others the victims won't even notice their things are missing until the thief is long gone. A con involves engaging with victims somehow, and manipulating them into giving away valuables.

I wasn't ready for a mail-in scam, posing as insurance, after being a first-time car buyer.
