  • It’s easy to feel futile when a tyrannical overlord is controlling your life. Maybe you’re some lowly, mediaeval peasant toiling in fields for an aristocrat, or maybe you’re stuck in a corporate dead-end job working for manipulative executives or maybe you’re one of the truly unfortunate people stuck living under a dictator who is as horrible and evil as can be. However your tyrant manifests, please don’t despair. History has shown us how to speed up the end of their reign. Be warned, your mileage will vary because not all dictatorships are equal. Just know that if you play your cards right you can topple that regime sooner than you think.
It’s time to learn How History Works as we explain “How to Overthrow a Dictator”.

Actually, you can sabotage a regime by sabotaging your workplace. In occupied France not all resistants were fighters, ordinary people could still cripple the nazi by being purposefully bad at their jobs. Things like applying bureaucratic procedures to the letter thus slowing whole pans of the administration, making small mistakes on a regular basis, withholding informations or relaying them late, incomplete or with some errors, etc. The MI6 actually printed a booklet with some guidelines, iirc Lindybeige has made a video about it.

You included the removal of bad management as part of your title, but never connected the more national(more violent) forms of revolution with those that take place in the workplace which are (usually) less violent.
If you had have explored and showed connections between national revolutions and their workplace counterparts it would have made your video more likely to interest the portion of your viewers who clicked due to the second part of your title.
    Other than that great video.
I might add that most revolutions depend on timing and outside pressures. If a dictator (or unpleasant manager) plays his/her cards right and doesn't make any large mistakes it is nearly impossible for the citizens to depose them.
In most revolutions it is the security forces that allow, or help, the dictator to be removed from power. The same applies to removing managers, it is usually the company and its HR department(and higher management) that either backs the manager or allows them to be sabotaged and quietly moved to another department.

Also much harder when you aren't the biggest of said coherent groups. Like if you're in a position to gatekeep and expel people then you're already most of the way to victory. Imo if you're the biggest faction at the top level then the biggest priority isn't removing those you'll eventually remove anyways from government, it's winning hearts and minds so they can't Revolution 2.0 you with their support base.
the whole thread in terms of topics would imo be better be covered in a single "how to come out on top in post-revolution factional politics" bit, which would be interesting.

At the 4:07 timestamp, the video states that Friedrich Olbricht placed the bomb near Hitler, but it was actually Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg; also, Heinz Brandt, the one who moved the bomb, was a colonel on the day of the assassination attempt. Hitler promoted Brandt to general the next day. The lesson of the video still applies, though; Hitler had Stauffenberg, Olbricht and many others executed.

    • @scepticalchymist
      @scepticalchymist 10 місяців тому +5

Well, the bomb was not really moved away, just replaced to a bad spot, behind the base of the desk. Also the meeting on this day was rescheduled to a wooden barrack, instead of a concrete bunker. If the same bomb would have exploded in the bunker, no one would have survived. Also Stauffenberg used only one package of explosive, instead of two, out of haste. Then Operation Walkuere was delayed until Stauffenberg made his way back to Berlin. They did not succeed to gain control over the Rundfunk, so Hitler could give a speech later that day. A lot of bad luck in fact, but the plan was ingenious, namely using the forces of your enemy and the command structure of the Wehrmacht to your own advantage.

As a Venezuelan we joked a lot about our dictators (Maduro and previously Chavez) and they allowed it to some extent.
More often than not, the jokes are related to imitate their speech paterns to say something stupid, and with Maduro specifically, we mocked him for being apparently dumb
On the long run several comedians had to flee the country and even a movie narrating their censorship as a comedy group, a movie called "Fuera del aire" was censored and the group working on it had to flee.
The other issue is that some jokes may cause you to underestimate your opponent, the dictator.

An interesting example of comedy was in Kenya. I unfortunately forgot the name of the dictator but they had a long term autocrat in power. In the 1990s there was comedy cartoon sketch in a news paper/magazine and it mocked the presidents actions. Subtle at first then bolder and bolder. Once showing a cartoon of the president winning a foot race when everyone else had clearly been sabotaged (he had just fixed the election). But they were never punished, why? Because the president found them funny. The president was forced to liberalise over time (though slowly) and eventually retired from office. Some feel it's because the comedy made him less scary, they felt more bold to speak out while also giving a way for them to criticise him. Although some could argue it helped keep the president in power as he showed a sense of humour that made him more in touch with people.

    • @Kirillissimus

The only thing that can overthrow a government is another government. So just start by creating one. But be prepared to the fact that this way can make you succed much faster than you think so it will instantly mark you as high priority enemy of the state so you will most likely have to sacrifice your life among many other things just to have a chance of seeing it through. Stakes in the game are higher than anywhere so be firm in sticking to your goals and be prepared to give up on everything and everyone you have for the sake of achieving it.

Gaddafi killed and tortured all dissidents without a fair and neutral trial. He replaced most if not all of the Judicial branch of government with his cronies. Threatened and harassed political opposition and stamped out all opposing viewpoints and criticisms with an iron fist. Gaddafi was a tyrant.
Josef broz tito was the same but he created and propagated the current political corruption and system that plagues his former country/s today and exasperated cultural and ethnic divides that caused the country to fracture and dissolve. He used state sponsored torture and kidnappings to all political dissent and opposing viewpoints he used state power to enrich himself and his party members exclusively and got the support from many other tyrants and dictators around the world.
      Both were dictators and tyrants.
