- I moved here 11 years ago this May and immediately converted the garage into a woodworking shop where i made hundreds of projects and videos. I'll miss it but its time for a change.
The (now) old shop will be converted back to a garage this summer and my new shop will be set up in my much smaller shed, but how it gets there and what will be inside will be interesting.

Hi John, give Plasticity a look. A buy once price and it's yours. I have nothing to do with them. Just like it.
I'm surprised you're not building a larger second shed or extending the existing one! 😆

I’m very excited to see the new smaller shop and the wall-mounted saw. I started following your channel 6 or 7 years ago, and converted a corner of my basement into a 99 square-foot shop that is amazingly operational for our needs. I resided our house, build 100 odd projects and bits of furniture, and remodeled our basement out of that shop.
After all the years I have been following your channel it is great to see this level of enthusiam reborn.... great John!!.
🤔🤨
Looking forward to the wall saw build!
I'm so glad you’re 3D printing. Your approach to design & strength will be a great addition to the community. Not a lot of people in 3d printing have decades of woodworking knowhow.
My Jorgensen screw clamps work exactly the way you describe changing yours to. I'm always impressed with your designing skills. You ought to patent some of that stuff. The sanding blocks look like good candidates.
Would be cool to get your opinion on some of the wood based filaments out there.
Can’t wait to see that new shop setup. The x/y “table saw” sounds like those big saws you see in the big box stores. H.D. and Lowes. I’ve been using freeCad for a couple years and find it easy to use. Had a rather steep learning curve as it has several different “work benches” to do different functions. There’s a couple of good weekly UA-cam tutorials that teach it from the basic to more involved modeling features.
Wow, you should have gone down this road a few years ago, with all the designs you have already created, and your knack for coming up with new ideas, this is right up your alley
Wow - You are giving off such a more ... vibrant?! vibe!
I have the impression you're in a more healthy place right now, from what I see, and IMHO you'll have a very very bright future ahead of you.
And we (as a community, your viewers, your fans, whatever you may call us) are so very, very happy to be following along with you.
Love it! 🤍
Welcome to the fun world of 3D Printjng. I’ve been doing it on UA-cam for 10years. I’ve been recommending them for woodworkers for years. You should try wood embedded PLA. You can print it, then sand it, stain it. Hatchbox makes a great wood filament.
My experience with hatchbox wood PLA is that it has issues sticking to the build plate which isnt surprising when I realized wood isnt sticky. I prefer just using brown PLA+ if im going for a woodish look because PLA+ is very sandable where as normal PLA isnt.
@@VERY_MAD_ALIEN - I’ve never had that issue with any wood filament. But a little glue stick helps any print if necessary. By adjusting the temp you can actually control the color of the wood too so you can get a light or dark wood look or adjust it mid print to get different color tones without staining.
Well I am Stoked to see what John's gonna come up with.
Love the enthusiasm you have for it all. Really curious about the new shop and saw . Also the advantages and limitations you are going to run into and how you gonna work around it or solve it. It will be for sure different with your trusted miter and table saw gone. Like always one door shuts and another one opens. One thing is for sure it's interesting to follow 🙂
Good talk John.
Just want to say thank you for all you have taught me through your videos!
Sounds like you are building a panel saw like a "Striebig".
Love this idea! 👍
I really like that whimsical smile you’re toting. So glad for you making more room to learn and make more dreams come into being. It’s in the details!!! I’m right behind you, watching and lovin every minute of it.
This is all ingenious. It amazes me. I have always admired your talent but, geeze. You're on another level.
Hi John, smiled all the way through your vid, I’ve gone through exactly the same process since buying my printer 3 months ago, massive woodworker to now a 3D geek!!!…. I’m obsessed to the point of asking my friends and neighbours do they need stuff so I can test my design skills, can’t wait to share your “journey” 👍
Always enjoy your videos, but will enjoy them even more now that you're adding 3D printing!
I'm imagining a panel saw like you would find at home depot or lowes. But something tells me, yours will be so much more than that!
Nice hair cut!
John’s rockin’ the summer look! Pretty ballsy considering this is Canada and here in the west I’m watching the half foot of snow we just got melt down (again).
All good things must come to an end, I guess. Anyway, thanks for sharing your journey and your knowledge. I've learned quite a bit from watching your channel. I'm excited to see the new chapter in your story!
Love the renewed enthusiasm, John! There's no doubt your woodworking skills are top notch, but your design and engineering skills have always been next level to me. Sure, those sanding pad parts are relatively "easy" to spit out on a 3D printer, but you had to not only figure out the mechanics, but how to make it work with individual parts you could make from plastic! I think you've been fibbing all these years about being in the construction trade. Admit it, you were an engineer at NASA, right?
Can't wait to see your new wall saw build. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
I took a 3d printing class at a makerspace because I wanted to know more about 3d printing and I had maybe one or two items in mind for printing. I was hooked immediately. Since that first class I have had an endless stream of "needs" to print.
I can't wait to see this saw project...living on a postage stamp size lot with a 1 car garage I understand the practicality.
THis will be interesting to see.
And congrats!
I need a small hand sander like this…. Love the design !
Nice to see your designs if ease of manufacturing only involves assembly. Not the parts itself. I think your strength with all your jigs and other designs is the ability to simplify the design of the individual parts and assembly so people can actually build it.
12:17 Considering Bambu printer behind you, your pun was top-notch :D
Understanding the click bait title now, understanding you would like to end the endless reconfigurations. Change is good but pleasure time becomes more valuable when we get older. Enjoy what you have earned getting here.
Man, it looks like you are having fun!
Wood is probably the most versatile material to construct so many things. But being able to 3D print parts for tools to make wood projects or to make parts that enhance a wood project is a game changer.
My Bambu P1S will be delivered Tuesday! I can't wait to see the things you create John.
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
I would love to see you doing the combination of your problem solving by making projects that improve quality of life in the shop or when you make your own tools
I brought 2 3D Printers with the thought of designing things to make. I can’t find a CAD platform that I am comfortable using. I purchased them a year ago and they sat idle for about 7 months.
John, It’s gonna be interesting!
John, I've been following you for several years and always enjoyed seeing how came up with clever solutions with the tools and projects you build. I've been 3d printing for a few years and can't wait to see what you do with 3d printing.
That saw sounds like something else. A bit like the panel saw at HD maybe where it will cut right to left and up and down.
I remember when the first 3d printed gun came out. It was called "The Liberator" which fired a single shot. I still keep up with them a bit and these days what can be printed is wild and is improving every year. The things that will be able to be printed in years to come is something I'm looking forward to. Having the freedom to come up with an idea and see it come to reality.
Polyurethane construction adhesive, yes! I have to take another shot!
Looks like you are having fun playing with the printer. They are fun and definitely have their use in the shop. I have the P1S. It’s great
I purchased my first 3D printer in Feb 2018. Last Dec I upgraded to a CoreXY fully enclosed fast printer. The fast speed really helps.
I use my 3D printer for making parts to fix things, or parts for wood work/turning jigs. As you said, some things are easier with the 3D printer than making by hand. I would not want to be without a 3D printer these days.
I also use FreeCAD. A lot of CAD features, just a steep learning curve.
Dave.
Welcome to the party, John. At first I printed a ton. Now it’s just another tool to get the job done.
I bought my P1P about a year ago and the only woodworking project i’ve done since was walnut bases to go with white hex light shades i printed
It was interesting to watch the video. One thing that kept occurring to me was that you seemed to be more excited about the 3D printer than the CNC mill. Also, years ago (early 2000's) I believed that 3D printing was not worth it until we got to a place that a 3D printer was as easy to set up and a laser printer, or ink jet printer. We are basically at that place now. I bought a 3D printer 7 or 8 years ago, and it was a pain, and I could basically do a better job in wood, faster. Now I am reconsidering a new one, because it's mostly automatic, including multi materials.
As always great work.
Thanks!
its just another tool added to your toolbox. cant wait to see how you will be using it.
3D printing is a great tool. I don’t see it completely replacing woodworking. Wood can be a beautiful finish for items in the home. Sintered metal or plastic, not so much. I’m a retired engineer who has used a lot of 3D printing in my career, so it’s not like I’m unfamiliar with it.
Welcome to the club. I got my first 3D printer about 5 months ago. Started small and just upgraded to the X1C. My favorite woodworking print was an attachment to my shooting board. I made the Mike Pekovich version that uses a construction square for the 45 degree angle. I needed a 58.9 degree angle for some cross pieces on a planter. I just created it in SketchUp and printed it. Perfect solution. Took less than 20 min to design, and it printed while I was doing something else. Are you making your 3D designs available?
On the clamps, that's the way commercial ones are made - one screw has left-hand threads.
title had me excited meteor 2024 still has 8 months to come through you can do it buddy come on you can do it woo
John are you going to sell any of your 3D items like the sanding blocks and so on? I've purchased some of your wood working plans. just curious
I think you may have talked me into a 3d printer. Question: Here south of the border, what kind of construction adhesive would you recommend? Thanks for all your excellent videos!
I have a printer I really, really need to learn to use. I’ll try that free cad program you were talking about. If I can get smooth enough prints I’d like to start printing wave guides for tweeters.
Unlike annoying clickbait I find yours amusing like a double entendre.
John, I been doing the same
LOVE the little sander; any interest in selling the file?
John you are not wrong. The 3D print is at the stage where it's just an appliance and has a much easier entry point for the average tinkerer.
Even some of the CAD software, like Tinker CAD, has become easier to use for the average person. Hell you don't even need to know CAD as there are millions of designs available for free.
Awesome stuff. Have you (or do you plan to) upload any of them to printables, thingiverse, etc?
Blender is also free, and you can do everything there
The big downside of 3D printed pieces is their stiffness... Like, for example, 3D printed clamps... It's just for fun... If you tighten them a bit, they crack!... It's still plastic... 3D printing is a real plus... but it definitely doesn't replace wood.
Welcome to the 3d printed world
Well... You can do a lot with 3d printing, woodworking or anything else, John. And a 3d printer is like a CNC, it's just another tool. 😊
BTW, it's too bad you're not into rc... Because a 3d printer is a treasure for rc!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
You always design things you have to have, are your 3D printing design available? I didn't see them in your shop.
Dear John, are you thinking of releasing those 3D printer files as I would love to be able to buy them so I can print them on my 3D printer
Wait…whaat? People put vehicles in their garage? That’s crazy talk! I’ll look forward to your shed addition/extension project, coming I guess this fall?😊
In all seriousness, it is great to see you smiling and happy and enjoying the new toy (not a toy). Does FreeCad offer much by way of CAM? Ie. Are you able to use it for CNC projects as well? I’ve taken sorta the reverse journey - got my first 3D printer about 6 years ago but now am getting into the CNC thing. I’ve used Fusion 360 for most of my design work but would like to transition away from it. Thanks for all you do!
Fusion 360 user here. It’s free for home use and made by autodesk.
Are you going to sell your designs?
I see a laser engraver in your future..lol
easy bolt on to his current cnc, I think he actually bought a setup with it.
Looking forward to more 3d printing.
Fusion360 hobby license??? Is free. And more powerful. At least it would seem more appropriate. One workflow for cnc and 3d printer. Parametric modelling, simulation, etc etc etc. sell models of your clamps and get millions carved.
I think this is all too advanced for me to comprehend.
I'm sad now.
I've been left in the dust of the old wood shop. 😐
John - I don’t know how YT works but I’ve been subscribed to your main channel for at least 10 of your 11 years and used to watch every vid… but for the past 2-3 years honestly have not been getting any notices and nothing in my stream. So kind of forgot you (and a lot of my other early faves) were out there… now I catch this and you’re quitting making stuff like homemade table saws, bandsaws and using construction adhesive for everything? No fun man - can I convince you to reconsider??
I was going to ask what you thought of your new acquisition, your 3d printer, but your enthusiasm was very plain. I also wanted to know is a cover necessary for a 3d printer or is it just extra?
Great to see your excitement! We are still here to follow along. Though UA-cam is a bit one sided in that you reach us much more than we reach you, it is still a relationship worth having! As a retired electrical engineer, I enjoy woodworking because I can touch and see what I have made. Designing or programming an integrated circuit, well, you see nothing until it makes something else function. And so I see CNC and printing as different expressions of creativity. CNC especially! Almost like replacing the template in routing!
So looking forward to your changes and wishing you the best as always!
not again🤣
Off topic item. Looks like you have lost a few lbs. good job!
I thought so too.
It looks like he might be fighting cancer?

Because I spend a lot of time with cancer patients. He has that "look" about him.
He doesn't look well.
Aw now that’s a buzz kill. It’s winter in Canada Einstein ? Are you preparing to fight your cancer you’ll get sometime? Seriously tactless and non contributory. Elf farts have more impact than that.

ironic how much he whines about youtube algorithm bs and yet is about the most shameless I know with the clickbait titles 🤔
Bye, tired of the clickbait bullshit, unsubbing !!!!!! Bye
I had the same feeling for some reason. I can't quite put my finger on it yet.

I hate to say it but I am a little disappointed. 3D printing and CBC crap technology should be used exclusively by people who have no skills and talent. Exploring it as a curiosity is one thing. But it destroys creativity and skill. Does pushing a button on a drum machine make a person a drummer? It’s really the same thing. Yes, you apply creativity to plot out a design on a computer screen and input the program into the 3D printer, but the machine is doing the magic, not you. A table saw is a tool, but applying robot arms and grabbers to slide wood around its table to be manipulated to make shapes based on a program that directs the arms around requires zero skill. As a viewer I have zero interest in seeing something created by a machine. It’s a sad end.
I get your point and I agree for the most part.
But, for example, do you use a calculator? Or do you work everything out on paper or in your head?
Do you use computer to communicate? Obviously you do, but would you rather do it all face to face?
Likewise with the telephone - it's a tool that makes doing a task easier.
Likewise with a fridge and stove in a kitchen, or a toilet in the washroom, or car or a radio in that car.
They are all technological advance that make this easier to do and take less time.
3D printing can take the place of skill that otherwise would not be developed. It may free someone to do what he otherwise could not do, because he has no natural talent for the skills required.
DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO...........3D PRINTING AND LAZER CUTTING IS VERY GOOD IM GOING TO GO INTO IT.....WELL DONE MATE
It seems like the ⅛ sheet sander is much less wasteful VS the ¼ sheet
