  • Singer-Songwriter Zolita joins Mal this week for an honest conversation about food and disordered eating. Zolita opens up about her battle with anorexia throughout her young adulthood, the health implications it had, and how she finally overcame it. Mal shares details of her binge eating disorder, the yo-yo effects of extreme diets, and how she still struggles with finding balance today. This episode also explores a correlation between eating disorders and coming out, how being vegan is often used as a "crutch" during recovery, and how the girls both finally learned to love and appreciate their bodies through yoga.

After i came out… i stopped starving myself, stopped drinking like 5-6 sodas a day and i also stopped have binge eating swings. Now im im eating 2-3 meals a day and drinking more water all because im allowed to love myself. I longer see myself as an abomination deserving of self hatred.

Finding your own body and weight that feels right and positive is so hard. After I had a baby- hearing moms about baby weight triggers all of the past again and it is a sh-t storm to navigate. Having a wife who get it is a game changer for keeping it positive.

Wow this was so insightful. Hearing both Mal and Zolita experience is giving me insight. And yes telling sum1 "wow you look good cause you lost weight" is not really a compliment. You dont realize how impactful society is in this, yeah back in the day media impacted that even more. Thats why Im so happy about the body positivity movement of today.Def needed.

people would tell me that the summer after i started restricting and it only encouraged me to continue for years, to this day i can’t stand people commenting on my body because it makes me so mad, you never know what people are going through.

Really, finding out I am queer has been such a help with my ED, like immediately. Coming out removed so much stress from myself and this helped with ed

I have struggled with binge eating my whole life and weirdly I have to agree that after going vegan I’ve been managing it better than at any other point in my life. I think going vegan for me certainly takes away a sense of shame. It’s really interesting that we all have our own justifications for why we think going vegan helped us, but clearly going vegan has helped.

I haven't had a bedframe for like a decade and the only difference for me is I can't store things under my bed. There are plenty of reasons to ghost me though.

Thank you for bringing up this topic, i'm sure many people can relate to this episode.
It's so hard to have a healthy relationship with food & to feel comfortable in our own body in this patriarchal society. I really hope that one day there won't be all those diet ads and that children won't be taught to restrict themselves and be afraid of gaining weight ☹
Like you, i wanted to have control over something & after i came out, the more i accepted myself, the more i healed from my eating disorders. Also, becoming vegan made food feel safe too. I wanted to become vegan because i wanted to live in alignment with my values but i never thought i'd discover the pleasure of eating different & delicious foods 💚
    Have a great day ✨

I remember in 6th grade having a eating disorder (I'm a guy). I didn't know what it was back then, but now I do.
I also know a couple of guy friends who had it to. Of course we never talked about it until we got older/adults, and had no ideal the other was going through it

Once again, there was so much I could relate to in this episode... I never got diagnosed with an ED, but I definitely had a lot of symptoms of it that were overlooked, coming along with my depression and anxiety (which is diagnosed) and it took me until my mid- to end-twenties to finally really start accepting and loving my body just as it is and in every way it changes. It took me way too long to stop restricting my eating and trust my intuition when it comes to both food and moving my body. Thank you for talking about this, for raising awareness and being so open, vulnerable and relatable. ❤️ Also thanks for your advice, unfollowing people whose content wasn't good for me and my mental health was a big and important step for me as well!
...it feels like I manifested this episode, I'm so happy Zolita was with you! 😁🙌 I'm so excited for "Queen of Hearts"!

It’s crazy to listen to this and realizing what you guys have to go through when you have an eating disorder.
I need to get a weight update once a month for my job, so I think nothing of it. But I never really thought about it that this could be a trigger for you.

After my 1st major breakup, I lost 20lbs being at my lowest of 72lbs. After healing, I had to consciously try not to put emphasis on how my body looked and how clear my skin was because I knew I’d fall into that trap. In regard to comparing your body to others, that Full

Such a good one, so important to talk about this strugge/Storys. Also Important to know there is help and a way to learn to get over it, to learn to handle it. Like you said its never gone and its easy to Fall back. But its okay, step by step and looking forward to a enjoy life again. So sad that we easily Fall in love with someone without body judging but we are so hard to ourself, in many ways. We are all unique, and should be love exactly how and who we are

I have the same experience as Zolita with being vegan. I always say that if I wasn't vegan, I would be diabetic, because I used to binge and restrict a lot. Now that I'm vegan, I feel safer with food. My diet became more balanced as I don't see certain foods as villains anymore, since veganism hasn't the same "rules" and "restrictions" as people established to the traditional diet. Also, in Brazil, where I'm from, we didn't have a huge vegan market when I became vegan, so I'm used to eat homemade and less processed food, so I eat way better now that I'm vegan, even though I still eat sugar, pastries and junk food. Veganism made me way less restrictive, and it may have something to do with the sense of control, but it definitely has a lot to do with how society judges certain food groups and with the rules that are set to the traditional diet that don't apply to the vegan diet, like the amount of food, carbs and fat that you eat.
