Great review. You really went in a lot of detail. The full screen mode had some pretty big issues which is why it was temporarily removed. I know the developers want to bring that back, but not sure if it will be in the next stability update.. Krita also tries to do monthly updates, so I think there is one coming up pretty soon. I think it has quite a few fixes and speed ups. There seemed to be a lot of pressure to get 3.0 out, so I think the developers made some compromises for the initial release. I actually added the eraser switch size feature in 2.9. It was really annoying me with sketching and erasing. We know the eraser tool needs some work. Thanks again for this great review. We really crave this type of feedback to see what is good and what needs work.
I just started collecting the list of changes for the next update and some of the problems ARE fixed. Full screen mode will be back. Drag and drop layers are much faster. We make fixing crashes the top priority, so there are a lot of fixes with that you might not have come across. If you are interested in knowing when new builds come out, I started a mailing list that just sends out emails when we do new releases. No sales or other marketing junk. You can find it on the homepage or the bottom of every news post.
The animation options are better IMO than photoshop(and many other programs) in Krita too! And they mentioned something about tweening in the future? Like, If the team added support for 'flash puppet' animation, with a better workflow system for it than flash.... it would blow flash straight out of the park. Like, GOODBYE having to lock the canvas at a certain zoom at ALL times to prevent drawing lines smaller than they are supposed be. >> I feel like it would really work too, considering Krita has vector layers already in it's programming. (even professionals in the industry who use flash say that the program technically sucks because it's not properly built for animation workflow, it's just the only program that works for puppet animation)
I love krita, at first i hated it but it has so many options and is really good for sketching and definitely for coloring, and as tons of other things sai and fire alpaca doesnt! krita is the shit, and its free!

Vern Hestand III nah I still want Photoshop but at the moment I'm using medibang. Gimp is the max cringe, (Used that when i was 9, now 13.) while krita has a hard-to-understand layout. So using medibang for me is the best free option right now.

been binge watching all your vids - great channel! its been inspiring, educational and fun! very glad to see you using krita, since thats what i'm dabbling with currently. would you be so kind to share your brushes?
These videos are so educational ! I love Krita but i always hated the fact that it wouldnt let us pick alt as a hotkey (for color picker). Good to see they changed that ! I'll give it another try now. Thanks :)
The reason for ctrl being the standard for Krita for the colour picker is because the alt key was traditionally hijacked by the desktop environment to window management stuff (eg move a window from any part of the window by holding down the alt key and dragging - this is surprisingly useful). These days that functionality gets remapped to the windows key though often not by default. shift + drag for brush resize first showed up in Corel Photopaint. I really like resizing brushes on the canvas.
that music in the back it distracts me so. (mostly the voice part that keeps coming up). but despite my struggles, thank you much for this video. it's actually kind of hard to find detailed comparisons out there.
Borodante you would definitely enjoy testing Pixelmator because it recognizes Photoshop brushes, you could use the same set of brushes that you use in Photoshop with the same settings
Full screen is still toggle-able from the view menu. However you may need to switch in prefs windowed/tab mode for it to work correctly. In one of those modes, a border still shows up. If setup right, tab will still give a complete full-screen canvas.
Superhelpful!!! Thank you very much! I am a graphic designer but I love drawing. The problem is I don't like drawing in photoshop, because I work in it and the relaxing stuff kinda mix with the job stuff - like you don't want to have a nice drawing session by starting with a look on a toilet seats retouches you are working on for a month now :D So I was looking for a good software which would have similar workflow and this really gave me some great insight. Thank you very much, I think I am becoming a Krita obsessed :D
great tutorial.I can use all the stuff fluently but thanks for the in deep technical knowledge . also the Ctrl color picker is used since in Linux when you press alt you grab the current window as window snapping.
the fullscreen mode was remove at windows version due bug at Qt5. (because krita was converted from previous Qt to Qt5 to better writting code) and i think they were solved the bug, and will make it at next release 3.0.1. I too really feel buggy when didn't have fullscreen mode.
New version of of Krita has modified many features. One can download the latest 2018 version Krita 4.1.7 either for free or simply by donating $10 via Microsoft Store, and it works fine in Windows 10, with excellent new features which easily compete with expensive graphic apps like CorelDraw or Photoshop. Found no bug in it.
Nice review! A very detailed one ! thanks for doing this review :) The behaviour of groups content not affecting rest of the layer stack can be made as it is in photoshop by clicking on the brick icon next to layer name ( right next to alpha icon) , it's called pass-through mode
yes that is a problem in that mode. We should report a wish bug for that . I think the pass-through mode behaves as is there is no group and all layers are out, hence i think when there is no group tit removed the mask on it too. we can give feedback to developers about this and see what they think :D. you can join us ( artists and developers) on the IRC (krita.org/en/irc/) to discuss and give feedback to make it better :D
It's very a nice review, I've been working with Krita for a while (for obvious money reason) and I got the same problem than you. It's a good program with a lot of wonderful ideas, but it need some fixes. I really hope it will continue to grow up, wich it seems to go in a good direction because of the recent kick starter :) It will be nice to send that review to the devloppers so they can notice and fix those problems :) You should also try to mess with the tool option, in the transphorm mode ;) As always, a very good video so keep it on ! :D
Thumbs up this comment if you want to see another test by Boro with the latest version of Krita (I think 4.1.1?)!! A lot improved and I'd love Boro t do another review of this great and higly improved software.
im very struggle converting me to krita for the fist one. (i think 2 weeks of nightmare) but now i think krita will be better and better soon. XD and btw the developer is really nice at the forum :3 check their IRC channel and forum too
The transform tools also include modes such as Wrap, Liquify and Cage transformations, you can find it in the tool settings docker. Btw Krita lags much more on a mac compared to windows or Linux, but this should improve in 3.1... Krita works fairly smoothly to me, i use windows 8.1 on a desktop with 8GB ram
i love this! you are the best ive seen so far on UA-cam! I started using photoshop instead of Krita to submit to a company they want adobe only WAAAAHHH! so I hate photoshop and Im so disappointed in Photoshop. Do you have a written list of your favorite hot keys or tips? i would love something to look at. Youre AWESOME!
It was awesome to see my main graphic program in use by someone else :D Wrap mode is already in previous version, few things as well. But there are indeed few things new (honestly I have not switch to new version yet). It's nice too see that Open Source Krita is comparable to pricy Photoshop :] One thing keeps bugging me. I'm using Krita on Linux. And I see that people drawing on Photoshop draw with really smooth lines, like they have some autocorrect function (or they are just way better than me). Does such thing exist in Photoshop? If yes, have you found it on Krita as well?
Yet another great video! Even your longer vids are a joy to watch ^_^ I have quite an irrelevant (?) question though-what program do you use for screen recording? You've inspired me to try doing speedpaints as well :3
I very much prefer krita 2.9, the last version has too many bugs for me. I'd love to try your brushes in it! Would you please explain how to install them in krita?
How do I change the pressure settings on Krita? No matter how hard I push the pen onto my pad, all the brushes are the same size! :( I'm really new to Krita and my drawing pad.
First, check if the program actually supports the brand of the tablet. I think they only allow Wacom and Huion tablets, and a few more from another company. If they do support your tablet, go to Settings, Configure Krita, Tablet Settings. You can change your pressure input there. If it doesn't support your tablet, there's not much you can do other than ask the producers to include your tablet so the program can register it. Hope this helps!
Would the "Transform Key" be KRITA's equivalent to Photoshop's Warp tool? ( in away). Or is there another function with in KRITA 3.0 that will be closer to that. noticed this was missing in 2.9 (warp tool that is)
The brushes are fast on my desktop rig at home. I think it's just your machine. I run it on Linux on a desktop rig though so i'm guessing it's Mac OSX and it's really old renderer.
Regarding your settings: I checked the manual for "Use texture buffer" and it says that it utilizes the graphics cards texture buffers to improve speed, and that it works for most Intel cards, but might be problematic for some AMD cards. Try it out and tell if it makes the drawing faster!
Thank you very much for this, so many things you showed in here that I think to myself when I use Photoshop... "I wish I could do that" When Krita get complete SVG support I will stop paying fot the Adobe cloud that's for sure :)
I just did something awful. I feel like killing myself. All I wanna say...is thank you. You make me feel so much better In the hard times and your amazing as a person. You make me smile and laugh and I adore your work. You’re so amazing man thanks for exiting.
Thank you for the vid! I really love krita :) you could go into more detail in the assistent mode, the transform tool has also more features (warping, liquid transform etc.. ) and the blending of the brushes is just awesome. But I also have this REALLY annoying issue, that huge brushes are just laggy.. even though they tried to fix it, its still laggy :D But at the end of the day you dont have to pay anything for Krita and thats the big big plus. I am really looking forward to the next video! (And secretly hopping you will do more i krita :D)
Very interesting review and discussion. I also loaded Krita 3 but continue to find it awkward and confusing. As you say, v 3.1 may address some of these early release problems. I hope you can do an in-depth review of ClipStudioPaint (Manga Studio). Although it lacks Layer Effects (mostly), it is in every other way like Photoshop, minus most of the photo editing features. CSP is VERY stable and is good for painting as well as "comics-style" art. BTW: CSP lets you paint with transparency while using the same brush you are drawing/painting with.
Plus it's...light weight compared to Photoshop. Everything works well for me, so I definitely recommend CSP. Bonus is that they tend to go on sale on every other month for about 20$! Which is quite a steal!
I´m using wacom intuos with krita and I have a problem. Every time I draw my brush keeps spinning. I don´t know how to stop the program from doing this. Does anyone have this problem too?
Thank you for the heads-up on the auto-size increase feature for the eraser. It's rather cumbersome to increase size manually to a random higher number. On a related note, does anybody know if it is possible to bring the eraser to full-power mode? The default mode seems to be erasing off a part of the layer at a time, and requires multiple eraser strokes on the same brush stroke to erase it completely.
I'm trying Krita 3.1 right now. I love it but I feel like I have to find another software. Among so many spontaneous glitches I come across every time I try to use Krita, the Line Tool decides often it wants to go its own way; configuring the canvas is rigid; and despite a great computer I lag if I use 10+ layers. I thought I just had to learn the quirks of Krita but even after many days looking into all of my problems there are 0 answers and 90% of my time spent drawing is troubleshooting.
I switched up from SAI to Krita a few days ago and I have a problem with the brushes. The strokes I make with the brush (any kind of brush) are not smooth at all and it kind of lags. It’s hard to explain. It’s just not comfortable when I draw especially when I sketch (cause I do a lot of little lines). I changed the stabilizer settings, i configured Krita. Nothing worked. My PC is pretty fast so I’m sure that isn’t the problem. I also have my OpenGL on and my depth is 16bit but looks like that doesn't help either.
Hey, I'm deciding what program to go with, and one I found on amazon (disk) was called managa studio 5 and I was wondering if you knew if it was any good? It was relatively cheap and from what I have seen decent.
You can also try Clip Studio Paint. It's very similar to MS, but people rave about it because it's more polished or the like. There's a demo you can try as well.
Do we pay kirta monthly or yearly like Photoshop too.? I know I'll have to buy Kirta. My other question is are the updates free or am I'm gonna have to pay it as well.?

Krita scales GPU power really well, you should try it on a computer with a discrete graphics card, it is noticeably faster than Photoshop.
Also the Linux branch is much faster than the Windows or OSX one due to the team having far more experience with it.
also fast on mobile gpu like radeon hd or intel hd
Than it should run good on my 290, will try it out.
I have used Krita for months and you still showed me stuff I had no idea about, thanks :]
by the way, the arrow is for vectorial objects only, and you may want to check out the options for the transform tool. it's probably nothing new, but the deforming options are pretty cool!
The fact that you can have this for free makes me so so happy. It's so nice for beginning artists to start out with, though it seems a bit scary for beginning digital artists. So much effort went into this program.
You,re amazing! I began to use Krita thanks to you( sorry if I said something wrong, because I am from Belarus)
Why am I more obsessed with his accent than the actual video 😅? I came here to get advice on Krita, so... I'm so confused.

you can change the hot keys from the sittings actually ;) change the V to Shift and you are good to go

Thank god this video is almost 3 years old, that means almost everything he found wrong with the program is probably patched by now.

the new krita has a new awesome quick brush ii think youd really like it

yeah, it's true
On the note of confusing shortcuts, I believe under the "default" tab in your shortcuts options, there should be a photoshop shortcut layout

Krita, just like PS is a pixel graphics program. If you want vector, try Inkscape.
Inkscape is a horrid abomination.
+Storm Engineer - or Affinity Designer
Nice review!
The hotkeys are made for left handed people boro
i was hoping youd show us how to import brushes from photoshop

i'm commander shepard and this is my favorite review on the citadel =)
Excelent review, thank you
Thank you for the vid!
Nice job! What are you using as your drawing devices? Are you drawing on a touchscreen?
Great review man !!
very interesting, thank you :D
cheers
So thats kewl.
Hello! TNX for overview!
Cursor is green ! i meen - brush! You know how to change this???
Krita 4 is out.
Can you change the brushes link as it doesn't work
Maybe u shud create another video with current photoshop and krita 4.0
I´m using wacom intuos with krita and I have a problem. Every time I draw my brush keeps spinning. I don´t know how to stop the program from doing this. Does anyone have this problem too?
If you close your eyes, it's like getting a great review from Christopher Walken. Sweet.
Great review! Thanks for expend your time doing this ...and also I'm getting sick of adobe's cloudy money suckers.
The thing is, Krista isn't finished yet!! It's got better things coming, and 3.0 was almost a 'test'? You could say.
How do you change the brush size on Krita?
new to digital art
I switched up from SAI to Krita a few days ago and I have a problem with the brushes. The strokes I make with the brush (any kind of brush) are not smooth at all and it kind of lags. It’s hard to explain. It’s just not comfortable when I draw especially when I sketch (cause I do a lot of little lines). I changed the stabilizer settings, i configured Krita. Nothing worked. My PC is pretty fast so I’m sure that isn’t the problem. I also have my OpenGL on and my depth is 16bit but looks like that doesn't help either.
I've been drawing with a mouse on krita
because I'm still not used to using a stylus. Does this effect the brush strokes?
Oh neat, I've got that Gorillaz poster behind me as well :)
No Affinity Photo vs Krita yet?
now fullscreen work
HELP i have krita and i cant move in the canvas with the etc, and idk what to do :( it's really anoying
why use default hot keys?
because you may work on an company that, for some reason , dont let you import your shortcut keys configuration =p
Borodante Hi - Where did you buy the glove ?? TIA.
other than krita anyone know any free good art programs?
i tried to download it and it says that i have Krita 3.0.1.1 whaaaaaaaaaaaaat
Hey, I'm deciding what program to go with, and one I found on amazon (disk) was called managa studio 5 and I was wondering if you knew if it was any good? It was relatively cheap and from what I have seen decent.
You can also try Clip Studio Paint. It's very similar to MS, but people rave about it because it's more polished or the like. There's a demo you can try as well.
okay sounds cool! I found it on amazon for roughly same price as what I was planning on buying so thank you both for letting me know about this!
Can you rea upload the brushes please?
Does it have color dinamics? :3
member his hair?
Do we pay kirta monthly or yearly like Photoshop too.? I know I'll have to buy Kirta. My other question is are the updates free or am I'm gonna have to pay it as well.?
BORODANTE I mean it, sorry I'm very new to drawing apps here and was just looking here for advices, informations, and recommendations. Thx btw.
