"Don't paint on a canvas! Never paint on a canvas! Ever, at all. In the beginning or in the end, you're never painting on a canvas. You're painting on 3D objects that you want to find." Profound. Love it.
Confidence is silent, insecurity is loud...and we can definitely find all of the insecurities from the rude comments in this section. Thank you Borodante for a good tutorial. I guess some people are still too stubborn to realize they're not at a professional level yet and can''t seem to find out why they can't get work.
WOW... everything i wanted to learn over YEARS of lookng trough books and tutorials. How does those guys make their speedpaintings? what IS THE PROCESS behind it all! NO ONE IN THE ENTIRE INTERNET TEACH ABOUT IT! Its like a non-spoken law, but woah... I mean, I was like in a constant state of frustration, always tied to the god damn figures but oh god how good it feels to have this knowledge, Also! you explain the difference between drawing and PAINTING! you put it all in perspective and oh god so clear!!! possibly the most important video about painting i have EVER seen in my life, no jokes. Thanks so much from my hearth, this will change EVERYTHING as an artist to me.
Your whole thing about silhouettes explains my last few years of frustration with realism in digital painting. I've used pens on paper for most of my life so I've began with silhouettes and worked inwards with them all. Thanks so much for the insight, I'm gonna go try out your technique now, I'd say with practice this is an amazing & powerful technique. Big ups! Big love!
+Borodante Man, I'm looking forward to binging on your content when I'm doing some more digital painting experimenting (most of my work's done through sculpting and crafting)- whenever I let paintings get soft, squishy edges, I've often felt like I've jumped out of a plane without a parachute! One way I could imagine forcing yourself to have blurred vision would be to create a Gausian Blur layer and you could gradually decrease it's opacity as the picture progresses.
You're approach to painting is so exact to my approach to writing music! I've watched so many videos, all suggesting line art of the final image as the starting point. You stress that the "fuzzy mental image" is the most important throughout the process...and I think THAT is a really great artistic technique that becomes lost in commercialized art and teaching practices. Thanks for your awesome insight into art!
Watching this about 2-3years later(don't really remember), with more practice and gained knowledge, I can finally understand more whats going on here. What a supernice compressed and to the point walkthrough of a painting process. Every bit of commentary makes total sense and is so well thought out. Glad I came back. It really tightens my understanding, again. So thankful for all your stuff, such well made videos, delightful to watch.
This is the video you've been looking for, fellow amateur artists. I've watched loads of videos looking to learn from professionals, and this is the first one where I noticed instant improvement afterwards. The principal of starting simply and adding detail is the same, except you begin with thick lines and chip away at them. When you're refining, it feels like tracing - except it's your own "drawing" that you're tracing. I don't know if that makes sense, but please give it a try.
I think I've said this before, but you're smile is contagious. And you're honestly my favorite UA-camr at the moment, your content is really top quality and I can't wait until you get super famous. (because you will) Keep up the good work dude!
this is actually brilliant, ive been struggling to paint for quite a while but im gonna try this, hopefully it'll help me get out of "drawing mode" and into "painting mode"
Oh wow--i've had a block about drawing and painting for some years, but all the things you explained were exactly what i had been doing--blurring my vision, discovering, all that! I found you from your Krita videos, i am now getting back into painting and this is so liberating. Your videos are excellent, i thank you.
You are by far the most entertaining art youtuber in operation! I love to watch you paint and you make me laugh out loud at least once an episode. Keep it up guy, you slay me.
Mate! because of you i found what way i really enjoy painting. Other artists really like to make digital art look difficult, when it's not rly. Just by watching and finding out all about what you talked about i feel like i can finally paint, and i found out how to go about painting in PS. Thanks a lot! I followed this tutorial and painted something i could never imagine to paint. You're the best!
This is such a good new way to create a character or a scene! I always start sketching and outlining everything, but when it comes to coloring, I struggle a lot with it. thank you!!!
I love that you take a different approach to digital drawing compared to the other million youtube videos out there! Thank you for approaching it uniquely!
This is really good. Rather than just being technical details about the software, or being purely theoretical, its a great mix of both. Highly impressive stuff, thank you.
Jus found your channel today and watched your tutorials all day long having a lot of fun and learned a lot of new stuff as well as got some pretty bright refreshers. Jus wanted to say thanks for doing what your doing. It's an amazingly valuable channel. I'm an aspiring 3d game artist and frequently looking into paint stuff for improving theoretically and practically. Your channel is a gold mine. Thanks from the heart for your efforts.
Wow you're a true GOD in what ur doing..And ur lessons are so wisely. It motivates me so deeply in a way where mine creativity just burst out! I shall follow you till the last drawing.. Hail to the Gods of Art!
I couldn't even wait until the end of this video to post this. I paused it, of course, because I NEED to listen to you. I'm too excited to try painting like this to even wait. Thank you!
This is great! From my own theoretical paint journey, I've started to approach something similar to this strategy, but this video just really put all the good aspects I've found together in a more sensible way!
Kind of mad that I learned more that was relevant to me and my art style and what I need to know to become a better painter than I actually did in the 6-8 classes I had in an art program stretching several years. Definitely subscribed and if there's more useful videos, will also hop on patreon because good teachers, good people, and good workers deserve money....even if I'm broke af for a few more days xD
These "simple" ideas of how to draw are so rear, because most artists don't think much about how they can draw that good, they just had lots of practice. Your sentences like "value is material" or "where is NO siluet" sounds like piece of a cosmic wisdom - simple and true.
I've heard the tip about "flipping canvas" many times, but I'm too lazy to do it and you are the one who managed to convince me to set a hotkey for it, idk why. As for the tutorial, it literally made me feel like a god because everything is messy but still looks promising. My only complain is..., I'm not sure when to use the "correct" brush on your video, also when I downloaded your brush set (thanks!) it doesn't have the savage version so I had to edit it myself. I think this tech is not good for a newbie like me, this is better for more experienced artists who ready to break some rule. Though it really improves my painting because of the color dynamic. Also!! I rarely watch a tutorial video from start to finish, but this? I enjoyed every second of it!
OMG i have shuffled through a lot of videos and at the ended up being overwhelmed every single time, but you my man are amazing and i feel like i should try one out right now.... i am already a fan... and subscribing
Never heard anyone calling a brush "ugly." What a funny guy 😂 "look at this crap it's disgusting" 😂 I can quote him all day! Sick work by the way, yes same goes for the hat 😂😂😂
I started watching your video because of your talent and stayed because you're hilarious! I'll check all your other video's just because you're so entertaining (and talented ofcourse ^^)
What you're referring to is putting down a midtone to start, which you can add to (and subtract from). This is common in charcoal/graphite drawing, and with the added layers and effects provided in Photoshop, it allows for a very painterly style.
I'm super glad I came across your channel! I really wanted to try something different than the line art/color I used to do but never knew how those cool digital paintings were thought through
At first i was like ok i see, everything makes sense. I tried it a couple times (unsuccsesfully) and hen i was like "Oh... OOOOOHHHH". From over blending outline anime stuff to soft blended semi-realistic (as far as i can call it realistic) crisp shading, you really helped me a lot m8 : )
I actually discovered this in drawing class. we were using charcoal and i was like I need to cover a lot of space. so i got a broad piece and then just a refining process.
And of course learn the basics of shading, spacing, proportions, and/or anatomy (based on what you create realistically) I'm probably missing a few learning basics, but I think this video actually will help me a lot in learning! Thanks!
I lost my glasses a while back and haven't replaced them. I live life as a blur anyway, I'm sure I can get the hang of this. awesome tips by the way, I love the beautiful unknown chaos.
By the first minute of watching, I knew that this is one of the best(if not the best, really) practical art advice video I'd ever seen and probably ever see. Instant like + subscribe + add to favorites! Keep posting ;), Cheers!
Oh mai gawd thank you for this tutorial! I'm a animator and I'm trying make like covers of my series I make and I like the painting style so thx for this!
this is great! I really appreciate and understand this...its a horrible habit to have to bog down into a section of an image and this stops me from doing that. I've been trying to figure out how to work this out in my head
Wow, fantastic video you opened my mental chakra, I've been struggling with my mind and how to get started in this digital technique and you've opened my brain, finally!!!, facilitating my existence with these luxury tips, you won a subscriber, and since you also use paintstorm, it is a tremendous tool. Greetings and thanks again!
Hey future you! (or present now) Do you actually watch this video today to remember all the subtilities of this way of painting? Because I am, this is at least the fourth time I watch it^^'
Very confusing to follow as a beginner but thx for this video. I’ve seen quite a few artist on Instagram use this “messy method” style for digital art, it seems so much faster and the results looks better in my opinion than the traditional way.
Along with blurring your vision you could also zoom out or look at the overview. I like the overview feature in many programs to keep track of the overall picture. You can spot mistakes with it.
blablabla can you just paint?
Yeah, but... your voice is like super annoying.
The people that are trying to bring you down, are the ones you are going to leave in your dust. Keep being awesome!
Кристиян Неделчев i think his voice is charming

You're welcome.
You my fraind, you are a god😂
Remember, it's LIKE (as in similar to) a god, so that means you can't be a god to paint like a god XD
i already am but im bad at painting :( help QwQ

ok I'm good to go!
BORODANTE well, you can say I'm kind of blind without them, but still can see shapes and objects if I get really close, like really really close! :D
BORODANTE nice video by the way!!
LOL
Zainab Hassan Hi Zainab!!! It's Tristan!!
I relate too much to this...

You are practically the modern Bob Ross of digital painting, i love it.
Fantastic video btw.
This is what nobody tells how to start painting. Start from very big spots and then come down short slowly to fine details. Excellent job man.
Three years later I will look back on this video with fondness as the video that started it all by teaching me about the search. Thank you friend.

Fantastic tutorial and tips sharing! You have the ability of explaining exactly what it needs to be explained for an artist to grow. Thanks!
great way to help out artist ive just recently gotten into digital but use it to clean up my oil and acrylic painting to have a mixed media style

I love the color dynamics. Use it all the time when sketching an image. 50% Fore/Back-ground, - Hue,Sat,Brightness and Purity set to 0%.
wow I am amazed by this! such a cool and fluid process of painting
Love your zen like tutorials !!!
