  • When Frank Bruno Challenged Lennox Lewis: It was the first-ever bout between British boxers for a world title!
At the end of 1993, Frank Bruno is trying to make a comeback to the top of the heavyweight division after a devastating defeat at the hands of Mike Tyson. After a relatively impressive streak of four knockout victories, it seems that Frank has regained his confidence. World heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis was defending his title for the second time while Bruno was presented with his third chance to become a champion. The fight between Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno, known as the "Battle of Britain," took place on October 1, 1993, in Cardiff.

Mike in his 'prime' never fought anyone of Lewis level.
Holyfield was probably the best pound for pound fighter around, certainly the best contender and team Tyson decided to delay that fight in order to fight Buster.
It's difficult to compare fighters in their prime because what is their prime?
I look at Tysons resume and I feel Lewis would beat all of Tysons opponents if I'm honest.
For me, the 90s was a tougher div than the 80s, we was blessed in the 90s. I don't think we've had a tougher heavyweight div since the 90s 00s

My friend Evander Holyfield was older than Tyson thats first. Second Evander never dodged Tyson and he had always been after Tyson. It was Don King who was avoiding a Tyson match with real boxers of the time. Tyson was good and is still good but he was an arrogant , disrespectful fighter who fought fights with not the best of the lot. The day he met the best he got his ass whooped and with Evander, Tyson had 2 chances and he got fkd up in the ring. Even in his interviews Tyson admitted he just couldn't get Holyfield. Holyfield is the only boxer I believe who fought men of all sizes and calibre even though he technically wasn't a proper heavyweight. The guy had guts, and a jaw of granite. A pound for pound boxer. In short a gladiator in the ring. People always say Holyfield headbutt Tyson. I dare you to go back and watch the fights again in slow motion and frame by frame. Holyfield didn't headbutt him but the frustrated and beaten Tyson ran into an already ducking Holyfield. If one wants to call it a head butt then it would have been Tyson who attempted the headbutt but connected wrong and fkd himself up even more. Tyson was a quick dirty fighter who used a lot of elbows with those wild fast punches. Mike met Holyfield twice and Holyfield proved to be the better one of them.

The Greatest British World Heavyweight Championship battle of All-Times!
While Lennox Lewis was the favourite and a HOF champion on the rise, he was still somewhat green with ring generalship and defense mind while Frank Bruno, the pride of England was in his very prime and used all his rich experience to advantage. Arguably Bruno's sharpest performance skill-wise (beside McCall fight) and had Lewis in big trouble in the 7th round - until Lewis fought through the unslaught and threw a big left to Bruno's chin that seriously rocked him. Lewis capitalized on that with a series of power shots till the referee had seen enough and stoped the fight, Lennox Lewis won by TKO and defended his WBC world title.
Just imagine how big a Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury clash would be! The ONLY rivalry that can rival or top this.
And that fight is a must happen regardles if Tyson Fury gets defeated by Oleksandr Usyk, this fight can't go un-happend.
The rivalry and bad blood demands it and all boxing fans demands it even more before any of them retires.

I’m gonna tell you exactly what was the X factor on this fight. It was stamina. Such a simple but underrated word. And quite frankly Lewis doesn’t get enough credit for it. Out of the big guys he’s one of the best when it comes to stamina conditioning, if not the best. That was Bruno’s demise. If he had just 5% more stamina than Lewis, that alone would’ve done it easy. But give credit where credit is due. Part of it is genetics but the hard work can’t be replaced. Lewis use to run run. For real. Long miles too. So there ya have it. You’re welcome. Also last fight between Fury and Wilder went the same way. It was stamina the issue because I love Fury but Wilder fought his best that fight. Just ran out of gas when Fury was just catching 2nd wind. Lesson here? Don’t devalue stamina. Don’t take her for granted. She’s good to ya!

It wasn't until the very end of his career that he actually started to become a bit more vicious, that he started to show some killer instinct. But unfortunately by that point it was too late in his career to really make use of it. If he had that killer instinct from the beginning, he could have been one of the GOATs.

But he got a little over excited and charged in the 7th when he hurt Lennox, and got caught by a bit of wild swing. Then he didn't take a knee which is what hurt him in his previous losses too. Lennox paid the price for not taking him seriously enough. Plus Lennox only realised his full potential under Manny Steward.

The week before the fight there was lots of talk about it being cancelled, as it was held outside and the weather was forcast to be really bad for the whole week (it rained both before and during the fight) but luckily it went ahead. We went down to Cardiff on a coach from London and it was "Bruno, Bruno" the whole way to Wales. Me and my mate were pretty much the only people on the coach that wanted a Lewis win. The other thing I remember is the stadium seemed almost empty. It was held in a massive 90,000 seat stadium, but the attendance was just 25,000. The fight was well promoted, but I think the weather put off a lot of people, plus the big fight between Eubank and Benn was happening in Manchester around the same time. A memorable night though, and we saw Joe Calzaghe make his pro debut on the undercard. 👍🥊🥊🇬🇧

How I miss these days, heavyweight fighters actually boxing. Bruno is massively underrated. Lennox the best jab I have seen.

Frank was one of my favourites growing up, great heart and I still recall watching him fight live as a kid, sometimes its not all about the winner and its about the character of the man.
    pass the sauce harry. lol

I don't care what anyone says: no-one ever worked and trained harder than Big Frank Bruno. What he lacked in innate talent he made up for in sheer hard-work and effort! God bless him! A true and proud British warrior! WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World, Frank Broooooonoooooo!

Lennox only had one flaw, he underestimated people. That’s why he avenged both his losses so clearly.

I watched this fight live,This video does not show the true story,Lenox had been warned many times About foul punches,
The last warning was to stop holding the back of franks head while continually punching up,They continued to fight and Lewis immediately continued to hold the back of the head and punch up because frank would not go down the ref said nothing at this point untill he saw frank was out of it so he stopped the fight.

@hunter9372 Yes holding the back of the head while throwing a punch is illegal. Lewis got away with it throughout his career. Bruno did the same but less often

Ironically in the week preceding the fight it was Lewis's camp that complained about Bruno being a dirty fighter and said they wanted the ref to keep an eye out for rabbit punches (from Bruno), which tbf he did have a habit of doing.

Big Frank has a good boxing record. Every loss he had was against top fighters in their prime. He was extremely popular in the UK, more so than Rick Hatton, who also was. Frank is still considered a national treasure in the UK. A very humble man.

A great blast from the past, these fights of the 90's where way better than these heavyweights today, Frank Bruno looked very good in this one, he came to fight.... I use to under estimate him, but upon reflection, I think he was not too bad.
Bruno is what Anthony Joshua is today fight wise, big and powerful.

    Frank Bruno, 'Our Frank'.....
I booked into a hotel that had sky sports to watch this fight on that night.
I have to say that Frank Bruno was seriously impressive that night & gave a brilliant account of himself.
He will be forever known in 🇬🇧 as........
    'Our Frank' 😊
