Man dies after routine gallbladder surgery

- Gary Bougie was two months shy of his 36th birthday when he died nearly two years ago. His family suspects he died from a condition called opioid-induced respiratory depression after going to the hospital for gallbladder surgery and they want to warn other families about how to possibly avoid a tragedy like this.
Probably shouldn’t be watching this the evening before my surgery.

Sounds bad for us that are alive, but I assure you he left peacefully without feeling hardly any pain.

I just had emergency inflamed gallbladder removal surgery last week and it was sooo painful. I’ve been dealing with what I thought was severe heartburn for over a year only to learn of the inflamed gallbladder. I’ve been home for a week now with 48 staples and a bile drain in my stomach. I am grateful I pulled thru. My heart goes out to this family. Much love..💕

What?! 😮 they used the robot on me which only left 4 small holes which they covered with skin tape. The aftercare is HELL. I’ve been having to trapped gas pain for 2 days now. Can barely walk or move
It took me four years to figure out what was wrong with me. Countless er visits. My gallbladder literally had to die before they would remove it 😢
Wow I literally went thru the EXACT same thing they said it was GERD. I’ve been out the hospital for about 3 weeks now

Mine went well last Friday!!! Didn't hurt at all...I'm perfectly fine...just a lio constipation for a day which occurs after every kind of surgery eg cesarean....and my right shoulder hurt but it immediately stopped after i used heating pad/bottle. I needed help to get up during the first 3 days becoz i couldn't use my stomach muscles...now im perfectly fine..my stitches will be opened tomorrow.

@@kylegroll8047 it’s not bad. It was tough to walk the first few days and it’s crazy how sore your stomach is. But I’m fine now.
I’m not bothered by eating certain foods either.

Scary. I just had my gallbladder removed ten days ago. The nurses here in a Massachusetts hospital checked my oxygen levels and other vitals several times a days post op.
On my 2nd day of recovery. They have me on opioid for pain. It's excruciating! Right should pain, and stomach pain where the incisions are.
I had gallbladder surgery and stopped breathing for the same thing. Thankfully they gave me naloxone and reversed the effects of the opiates. Scared me so bad being shaken awake saying you’re not breathing.
People unfortunately die all.the time in hospitals for minor things.
I just had my gallbladder removed and my chart says that my oxygen content was insufficient. I was given pain medication whilst in hospital. I didn’t even realize that opiates could cause such a thing as insufficient oxygen. I do know that overdose can cause death because a person can stop breathing but I honestly don’t understand how anyone could ever go to sleep in a hospital. That’s an extremely noisy place 24/7!!!
If you have sleep apnea following days your going to have awful sleep aplea, sleep with your machine and sleep on your side. My husband came home same day surgery and next few days sleep apnea was so bad machine alerted him to not breathing multiple times a night, I was so scared watching him sleep paying all night since machine was not helping. As soon as he turned to his side (with his sleep apnea machine) his breathing improved. So now every night I tell him sleep on his side. Look it up I never knew but Anasthesia and opioid mess with breathing and it affects many people. I never knew how risky this was until day he returned from surgery. and

I was released to go home less than 3 hours after they removed mine. I was in so much pain I could barely walk and I had to use a bed pan and I was having anxiety attacks that felt like heart attacks from the pain and I couldn’t even speak when that happened so I had to go back to the hospital 2 times but after giving me pain meds in my IV they would just send me home. They had only gave me 5 pain pills that didn’t work at all because the laws are so strict now the only way to get any relief was to get the hospital to give me meds. It was the worst experience of my life.
I’m so sorry he lost his life and they didn’t take better care of him and it makes me wonder how many people hospitals release right after surgery have passed away from not being monitored.
It was not the surgery itself that killed this man, nor complications from the surgery itself. The medications and anesthetic and oxygen breathing levels that were the issue. Also they must have kept him overnight for concerns of his health because usually its same day surgery where you go home approximately 4 hours after surgery.

4 hrs. Hospital tried to kick me out as soon as I woke up. The nurse kept coming in like are you ready. I got tire of it I felt like shit can barely walk put my clothes on and left. I was all dizzy.

My surgeon keeps patients overnight... I'd rather go home, it's a horrible hospital.

Typical protocol is having O2 Sat monitor on your finger as you lie in recovery room for several hours post op. This should not have happened. 😔
I just had emergency gallbladder surgery because of gallstones 2 days ago. And then I had to get another emergency surgery to get the stones out of my intestinal trac. I got the stones when I was 7 months pregnant. That was 3 months ago... My gallbladder attacks were so bad I didn't feel contractions 2 minutes apart.
My baby boy is 6 weeks old. I couldn't imagine leaving him without me 😢 I am so sorry for there loss. Fr

Just had my surgery 2 days ago. Having really hard time with breathing. Doctor and respiratory tech said my oxygen level was 86 and should be 90 , they still sent me home and my breathing is very hard
Cpuld of been too much Anesthesia.
My 79 yr old mom went in for a routine gall bladder removal and they sent her home a few hours later, and said that she will complain about the pain but don’t bring her back to the hospital unless she cold to the touch or sweating, well she complained of pain all that day and night, my sister called the Dr and he just upped the Hydrocodone dosage, she remained in pain til the 3rd day when she became cold and sweating, fast forward to 3 months in ICU, due to infection and having breathing issues,a heart valve replacement, then attached to a ventilator and as of a few days ago suffering a stroke and bleeding in the brain to us having to say our last goodbyes to her today as they will take her off life support😭😡
Oh goodness I'm so sorry 😞 that hospital should be ashamed let's up the meds and not take a proper look at her uggh my heart breaks for you and your family. may she rest in complete peace.

Anesthesia has more risks than talked about. Unfortunately, needed for surgical procedures..
I know how you feel I just lost my husband same way. But he had some health problems and doctor said it would be no problem they were going keep in hospital but decided not to. He died 7 days later.

44 minutes surgery, one to wake, and out of the clinic. They don't do laparoscopic gallbladder removal at the hospitals, bcz there's no need for staying overnight.
In my country of origin, two days stay at the hospital.
It sounds as though this gentleman had undiagnosed sleep apnea. You'd be surprised how many people we see fall in this category. If he had unknown sleep apnea, and his surgery was not a planned procedure, but one that was done in the inpatient setting because he went to the ER with abdominal, epigastric pain and imaging revealed gallstones or an inflamed gallbladder, the appropriate hospital unit for him after surgery would be a medical/surgical floor especially since it sounds as though the surgery itself was uncomplicated. On a medical/surgerical floor, patients do not require contact monitoring of their vital signs. So he would not have had a pulse oximeter monitoring his oxygen level. Instead, he would have had his vital signs checked every 4 hours. And if he had a low pain tolerance and was requiring high doses or narcotics, that, combined with possible sleep apnea would explain his death. Very sad. If you snore, have your family watch you and monitor for any period of apnea (when it looks as though you're not breathing). If you have this, see a pulmonologist for a sleep study. If sleep apnea is confirmed, and a C-pap is prescribed, wear it. Your very life could depend on it.

May peace be with him , I had my gallbladder taken removed right after I gave birth to my son during covid and i thought I was going to die . The worst feeling of my life and so scary and even after the surgery my body is still not the same

I wonder if sleep apnea played a role in this? Patients with sleep apnea are supposed to be on a different type of pain meds when going under anesthesia

My father underwent gall bladder surgery in 2019...I would've sobbed my eyes out if this happened with my father. I just thank the lord my father's still with us. He's now 64 years old, and this year (2024) will mark five years since he had his gallbladder was removed.
Did your father has some problems like nausea vomiting diarrhea after surgery for few days or months? Please reply it's important 🙏

I had mine done to 6 months after I had my first baby two years ago and they sied if my husband wouldn't took me in time I could have died and I'm so thankful to still be here with my 2 in a have year old daughter and husband and now getting ready to have our baby boy in two months but my heart goes out for this man family because I was really sick couldn't keep food down for nothing so yes there is a god and he said to me that it's not my time to go that my baby and husband needs me like I need them as well but god bless you all have a bless day 🙏💔

I had mine removed last year 10-20-2023 and my life has been so much worse. I would rather died like this man than live the life I have now post GB removal. Pain, adhesions, PCS, SOD, etc… all had made living so hard and I was not warned of these. Then I loose my only child on 11-28 just made it all even worse. I have surgery this Friday July. 5th to hopefully help so,‘em of my pain, with any luck I will not wake up.

@@kukitah29 yah I am awake, after the surgery in recovery it took almost 2 hours to get the pain under control, and they were using the strongest they had. For some reason the middle incision hurt the worst, I woke up feeling like I had a red hot skillet sitting in my chest and belly.
The doctor fixed the massive scar that Dr Conway caused that looked like a 2nd bellybutton, middle incision still hurts, and still have pain under my right rib and now lower belly, also have daily vomiting where I did not have it before, but my pain level has again increased after this surgery and it is post 3 weeks and 1 day.
He removed adhesions from 7 different areas, they were attaching to the liver, kidney, abdominal wall, and small intestines, and were really bad where my GB used to be.
I don’t know what life has in store for me, but if it does not get better soon I just rather it be over. Next weekend would had been my sons 20th birthday, trying to get through this as well, be the first one since his passing.
I had gall bladder removal. When I was in the hospital in bed recovering after surgery, the nurse several times in the middle of the night, she entered my room told me that the oxigen was low and she put the clear tube in my nose, and sometimes the clear tube falls from the nose when you fall sleep and she comes to my room and put back the tube. She kept saying that I stopped breathing, but I was not feeling anything I was relaxing, on and off sleeping. I did not know what she was talking about. Maybe she was too diligent and caring. How she knew I was not breathing. She is not in my room, she was in her work station. Do nurses have monitors in their work station beside the ones in my room. I could not feel anything, she even asked me if I had apnenia. Not that I know. I thought that when stop breathing, you would weak up abruptally in agony to breath. I was in heaven after the surgery, because of the residue of the anesthesia and did not feel pain, and feeling very well. But on the 2nd day after all the anesthesia is gone, ahhhh, you feel the pain in your belly, mobility compromised and a lot pain on the tip of shoulder, it was bugging me why I am felling pain on my shoulder, very nagging pain. I was wondering, "did somebody pulled my body by my shoulder in the surgery room while I was sleeping to move the body to another table". And did not ask the surgeon why I had the pain on the shoulder, I googled and utube after I got home, and it says that is due to the gas they use during the surgery. So why gas would ache the shoulder. I got more puzzled.
It sounds as though you were in an intermediate unti or intensive care unit. Yes. The monitors in the rooms transmit information to monitors at the nurses stations with alarms to alert them of abnormal numbers. Yes. The shoulder pain was mostly likely from the gas pumped in the abdominal cavity to help with better visuals. I am glad you're well.
I stopped all my prescription medications days before my surgery.

I just have mine today. Im in pain but not taking no pain meds even though they gave me some. Im taking Ibuprofen. They were quick to send me home. Even checking every 15 minutes to see if I was getting ready.
His gallbladder surgery went well. He died due to the anesthesiologist making a mistake.

So sad! I even had an open gallbladder surgery last friday. They seemed to have had me in strict observation. The fingertip thing and bloodpreassure at least 3 times during the day and one time in the middle of the night.
The hospital is totally to blame. It's an old video hope they got charged for this.
Yes, every 4 hours is the standard for regular medical/surgical units. This would have happened between vital sign checks. It sounds less like hospital negligence as it does an unfortunately event due to undiagnosed medical condition. Most likely sleep apnea. It's so unfortunate and heartbreaking.

To put this on the news you know how rare this is right. This is not common at all. That's why it's on the news. And you're really not supposed to mix pain meds with anything's so who knows what happened

Yes it is necessary for some people, I just had mine. My gallbladder was not working properly and was hurting a lot.
Mine was infected and ready to rupture, for most people it’s not necessary too remove but in my case, if I didn’t get it removed promptly earlier today, it would have been lethal!

A stupid unnecessary comment. Some people live in hell because of the gallbladder issues. You're not experiencing it so why even watch the fucking video you can't relate
