Not only does Manus look like he could be in Bloodborne - his speedy moveset is rather similar to the creatures you find in the game. Given that Bloodborne's development began around the same time as AotA, I guess it's not a surprise.

So it's kind of like DaS2 where you can walk out of a backstab but the player who tried to stab you will just do a regular R1 attack instead of grabbing at the air like an idiot. It's pretty much perfect if you ask me.
reason why mother mask is taken off in random battles is because its left useless after damage is taken... if the build has pyro then the dusk crown is equipped for better magic damage, if the build is pure physical then the mask of the child is usually equipped.
