Most people just don’t know how to watch effectively, that’s why they say it isn’t worth it. You can’t just skip around and watch single things you’re interested in because if that’s the case just watch UA-cam. You’re paying for the system and all the applications
True if you can’t just watch it all the way through and not drill it either. You have to watch a few parts, drill them, hit them in rolling and repeat to really get the most out of it
exactly!its like people think by paying for them an watching them once, they suddenly know all the moves. its basically the same as going to a class, just because you watched the coach do the move, you dont suddenly become an expert. il watch maybe 20 mins of a instructional, take soem written notes, read through an watch maybe 2 or 3 times, then next training session, when its free rolling at the end, try some of the stuff out. then go back to the instructional an do the same again on the next section
Actually i think thats kinda okay to do, of course getting the whole picture is important but I think where most people fuck up is not actually drilling it enough. They watch it and try to apply it right away and then rate how good the technique is if they were apply to get it
@@Nogi1987 Gordon and johns instructionals are more than just single techniques. From my experience, I am able to apply certain ideas and little details immediately into training that same day. So I guess drilling does have a factor but their dvd’s give you way more than just single techniques which do most likely require drilling to be successful with.
Such a smart approach. I did the same thing as you when I started. I bought dvds from the top competitors and id watch them in parts while taking notes then drill them at practice. You will develop faster then everyone else who isnt doing the same thing.
Did you have someone with whom you watched them with, so you had someone to drill the technique on? That’s the problem I see with instructionals. Drilling as one is watching them would be so crucial, but at that point you would need a dedicated partner and dedicated training times. Which effectively is just mimicking a class. Outside of that, it’s just trying to remember them for rolling at the end of one’s actual class, with the difficulty being compounded by the technique of day being more fresh, and now also being less important to the video technique, and in addition one is jumping into trying to use it against full resistance with no prior drilling. Should definitely make a video on how you effectively used and implemented them. That would be helpful
Just ask your partner to do positional sparring or if they wanna practice stuff at open mat or during a roll or you can just try it until it works in a live roll
Instructions ARE worth it. Free stuff is nice but they’re usually single moves that lack context, explanation of fundamentals, or a solid understanding of alternatives and possibilities. 2 months ago I was great at getting to mount but could never finish. It taught me to focus more on my opponents elbows, what to do when they threaten ti escape, and a bunch of attacks I didn’t even know existed.

@@icya5844 dude, it’s SO MUCH more than you’re thinking. Like if you start standing and they start seated he shows you how to go from standing to them flattened out with you having the body lock. So I got back into bjj after years away. I'm 37 yo. So I need to optimize my learning. I'm fit for my age but not as flexible as I was in my 20s. And some guy fell on me awkwardly and tore some rib cartilage. It's 6 weeks and I've been training again . Not 100 percent. But I did buy Gordon's side and mount videos to go over while I couldn't train. I watched mount and took notes. U have to find how u learn. If I watch and write it down in my own short hand code . I can review notes and recall it instead of watching a 20 minute video when I can just read a paragraph I wrote. Then try and hit the moves . Sometimes it works sometimes u gotta reflect and think where u mess up. I couldn't get the full mount pin and threaten the arm so they reach across then u gift wrap the arm and take back. But I was able to see the gift wrap opportunities while rolling and use it to take their back . Also 2 months ago when I first got back into bjj I bought danaher guard retention and passing . Those I just watched and didn't take notes. It was a good refresher. I need to go over those and study and take notes. Cause if u don't u just try and hit things while rolling and somethings work for you and somethings don't. Like the torreando pass just feels right for me. I had success with it. Then rewatched that pass . Then watched the video on countering that pass to understand it better. And I did it last night on a brown belt afew times. He even complimented I did it well like stick with that move that's your move. Even though we weren't going hard cause I told him about my rib. So the value u get out of it is up to u. U can squeeze every dollar out of it. Then keep working it rolling . Or pay 249 dollars to just half ass remember danaher philosophy on guard retention . Don't let your feet point away leg pummel don't let them control your head knee and elbow connect to block pass and bring you leg across their face and re guard. It works . But I didn't get as much meat out of it as opposed to the mount video where I took notes and trying to apply it in the same way.
Seated guard was his best. Closed guard was also great. I'm also glad I'm not the only one who thought his attacking the guard was disorganized. Most of his stuff are very similar to Danaher's. If you’re not watching the Gordon/Danaher DVDs and drilling the moves, understanding the concepts etc. YOU’RE GETTING LEFT BEHIND. Yes, you can watch other athletes DVDs, but if you’re not learning how the DDS systemise their submission threats, guard retention and escapes in particular, then be prepared to get further and further away from the competition. They will show you details on a submission that no one else will. They will show you very obscure guard retention for specific guards (not just open guard as a whole.) They will show you the smallest details on the Mount, so that you will never have to ask a question again. If you don’t like Gordon’s online persona, then I suggest you put your ego to one side, and listen and watch what he can teach you instead. Learn incrementally and pick out the problems you face most often first, then revisit the dvd whenever you face a problem in sparring. I use it almost as a private teacher, rather than an 8 hour long dvd. Film bits on your phone and whack in folders so you can drill at training. Good luck.
heres the trick... watch for them to go on the daily deal, then use the coupon code as well. Get the Honey app on your phone or computer, because it will give you the best coupon codes it can find, then use that while they are on daily deal. It's amazing... you can get a $249 instructional for around $60 at times... I've done it. Today as I write this the pin escapes video is a daily deal. reg price 249 daily deal for 124.50, then with the honey app its only 62.25.
I think the real need depends on whether you're a hobbyist who simply wants to progress vs being an active competitor. One dedicates more of their time to training than the other.
I think seated guard -> guard retention -> guard passing -> side control -> mount. Seated guard can be replaced with whichever guard you like since he has one for most guards at this point. And make sure to just buy them when they’re on sale

im very broke and wish this stuff wasnt behind a paywall, but i feel like theres good enough resources out there that you can learn perfectly fine without paying
Agree, in most of them you get like 4-5 really good moves, the rest is used very rarely. It's nice to have the entire library of a position but at that high price it is not worth it I think.
Idk man, depends on how you use them. I think they pay for themselves in the time to progress that they save you if used correctly. They are not necessary, but for the optimally-minded it's an attractive option and one worth investing in.
I belive they aren't overpriced and i live in a very very poor country...i mean yes it is a lot of money but you are learning from the best in the world things that prove to be effective in the highest of levels When it comes to it i think that it really depends on who you are and your golals if you are casual and just like to go to the gym roll and have fun you will probably find it overpriced but for people that would like to speed up their learning it's very handy
Do you think that shall not pass offer a lot more in terms of guard retention ability than the position specific dvd? Example, is the halfguard dvd cover guard retention more in depth than “they shall not pass” which may be a brief overview of retention from halfguard? Hope this makes sense, thanks!
I haven’t gone through the the half guard one but they shall not pass definitely has more about guard retention than the supine and butterfly guard dvds do.
@@JoshRichBJJ I guess that answers my question. Cause in seated guard he goes over body lock defense and counters. Was just curious if he is just re-teaching the same stuff on a different dvd
I would actually recommend John’s guard retention dvd over Gordon’s if you want a complete overview of guard retention. Gordon’s they shall not pass, was much more niche I found.
Submeta course from lachlan ghiles is worth it. I did buy travis stevens grips and his no gi take downs. Craig jones down under. Tbh there good if you can't train like during lock down

I will usually drill the move I watched about 3 times with someone before class then try to hit it in live rolls. I’ll first get to hit it on someone newer then up the difficulty
About a year ago I came up on a fuck ton of money and used 1k to buy Danahers enter the system DVDs...it's not a magic trick that will make you automatically better, but if you put in the work and drill what you watch, you will be wayyyy better, trust me lol.
Pretty sure you can buy all his instructionals for under $1000 if you buy on sale and use a code. Maybe I’m wrong but you’ll get like hundreds of hours for $1000 if you buy right. If you buy get swole that’s your fault. Considering it’s better hour for hour than direct instruction it’s worth it if you care to get good at bjj fast. Up to you and how much money you have. I doubt Hardly any of the highest level BJJ practitioners spent money on video tutorials. It really just comes down to watching competition rolls and training
I think all of them watched tutorials their first years, some of them like Craig Jones have even said they did. But after a while you need a good coach of course

They will show you the smallest details on the Mount, so that you will never have to ask a question again. Good luck.

@@kan1313 Learn some manners.
Which instructional DVD was most valuable to your game? Thanks for putting me on.
John Danaher’s Guard retention by a country mile.
Could be priceless to the right person. Thank you.
Where can I find the leaked versions of all his dvds
man oh man I would LOVE to be able afford this videos, but they just out of my price range right now :(
@Akuma_Eshi contact me for
heres the trick... watch for them to go on the daily deal, then use the coupon code as well.
Yes! I think those gordon instructional are worth it except for the older ones. Got it
Who you got winning tomorrow GR or Pena?
I got Gordon
Would love to see a review on Craig Jones videos, awesome content man. Keep it up! Subbed and liked

Good vid for sure. Very to the point which is a vital quality lacking in 98% of all YT vids.
Which one would you recommend in order, for those who can't spend a 1000k in one sitting :) ?
I think seated guard -> guard retention -> guard passing -> side control -> mount.
Seated guard can be replaced with whichever guard you like since he has one for most guards at this point. And make sure to just buy them when they’re on sale

Hi! Regarding not being able to find something in a bjj fanatics intructional. There is an option for bookmarks and you can rename it as you wish. This helps to find specific video parts.
I downloaded most of them, but doing the John Danahers Gi instructionals first (I do mainly gi - recent blue belt). After finishing them Ill take on GRs

Xbox, plasystation both use dvds, you can download it to your pc.
how is it not worth it?
it costs $150 a month to go to local classes. on top of that when you go to seminars for a few moves is another $150 flat. you get to keep all the videos and can replay it back.
Love ya vids my man 💎

Which instructional would you recommend most, danaher or Gordon ?
they are different and diff teaching methods. contact me if you need detailed info
Danaher.
He never denied using steroids. Sometimes you can learn a lot from what someone does not say, rather than what they say.
im very broke and wish this stuff wasnt behind a paywall, but i feel like theres good enough resources out there that you can learn perfectly fine without paying
Nick really likes his body lock 😂
Good video. Thanks for this. 👍🏻👍🏻
Hey man! Great video!! Which of them would you recommend as a first purchase for a white belt?
Lol glad to see I’m not the only one that’s missing a handle on my glasses 🤓 lol
Shit sent me when you said the only thing this video is missing is a way to find a steroid dealer😂😂
Great video thanks. Since Danaher's and Ryan's videos are quite similar, which one would you recommend?
I can tell you did by watching your superb shoulder crunch and always transitioning to head and arm choke.
Do you drill as you watch the instructionals? Or retain the information from watching each move?
Thanks!! Your videos are awesome
I will watch them on my way to class and drill them before or after class. Usually that’s enough for me to remember the details. Thank you man!
i was gifted with his series and danaher and tonen and jones so i have a lot to watch but it will be an incredible journey.
"How to find a steroid dealer" SAVAGE
My man! This is how you title and create a thumbnail. You know a thing or two about making videos.
instructional dvds in bjj are overpriced and overrated
Agree, in most of them you get like 4-5 really good moves, the rest is used very rarely.
It's nice to have the entire library of a position but at that high price it is not worth it I think.
Idk man, depends on how you use them.
I think they pay for themselves in the time to progress that they save you if used correctly.
They are not necessary, but for the optimally-minded it's an attractive option and one worth investing in.
I belive they aren't overpriced and i live in a very very poor country...i mean yes it is a lot of money but you are learning from the best in the world things that prove to be effective in the highest of levels
When it comes to it i think that it really depends on who you are and your golals if you are casual and just like to go to the gym roll and have fun you will probably find it overpriced but for people that would like to speed up their learning it's very handy
Gordon's DVDs are worth it. He crams an insane amount of knowledge into them. However, top mount and side control are 80% similar.
Buy when discounted.
Personally, I think the price is generally Okay, especially in the case of Danaher.
LMFAO at his mindset review
Submeta course from lachlan ghiles is worth it. I did buy travis stevens grips and his no gi take downs. Craig jones down under. Tbh there good if you can't train like during lock down
My man needs a GoFundMe to fund a second arm for his glasses
Why not go for the backtriangle if hes giving up his back?
Would at least have been a triangle.. haha
good job though
Triangle from back BRO!
GREAT VIDEO KEEP IT UP
bro i need to sell my brother and my brain to buy those Instructionals
“To a certain degree”
Broooooo I was wondering the same thing that I almost spent a g on it too
Save your money and spend it on the mat. Take a private and drill something over and over. It’s how you can apply what you know. Gordon has done those body lock passes 1000’s of times on the mat. And of course it’s nice to do it under the expert tutelage of John.
He is said to release a bukkake special next year.
Roasted 😂
Awesome video
"The only thing that isn't in the instructional is how to find a steroid dealer." 😲
We need to bring back Limewire
How do you practice what you watch?
I will usually drill the move I watched about 3 times with someone before class then try to hit it in live rolls. I’ll first get to hit it on someone newer then up the difficulty
@@JoshRichBJJ awesome! I’m going to try this
Good work bro
About a year ago I came up on a fuck ton of money and used 1k to buy Danahers enter the system DVDs...it's not a magic trick that will make you automatically better, but if you put in the work and drill what you watch, you will be wayyyy better, trust me lol.
cool, now pass the access data for us to watch too
Pretty sure you can buy all his instructionals for under $1000 if you buy on sale and use a code. Maybe I’m wrong but you’ll get like hundreds of hours for $1000 if you buy right. If you buy get swole that’s your fault.
Considering it’s better hour for hour than direct instruction it’s worth it if you care to get good at bjj fast. Up to you and how much money you have. How much you care about bjj.
Please tell me you got them all with those sweet sales lmao

is it rude to ask if I could watch the instructionals on your account? I really wanna improve in Bjj and would really appreciate it 🙏🏽
Most of that stuff i got from 8 months of actual training, def not worth it
x to *doubt*
That is not true and you know it. 😂 The details they show vs how most others show moves is unfathomable.
Could have downloaded most for free. And tbh if you don't have mats at home and a drilling partner, instructionals are not going to be super useful.
👀 i'd love to do that but couldn't find em hahahaha
You at least need to have a partner you can drill with before or after class
Did anybody really ever pay the full price on BJJ Fanatics? Why not wait for their countless "special" offers and pay 40% less?
Aren't they places to download for free?
@@matdunsford526 that’s called stealing
you could of put that in the gracie online academy and get a black belt
I doubt Hardly any of the highest level BJJ practitioners spent money on video tutorials. It really just comes down to watching competition rolls and training
90% of the money in BJJ is made on selling instructional DVD/GI's/personals to white belts.
The highest level bjj people have people like Danaher as a coach so you’re probably right they don’t need tutorials.
@@LOLLYPOPPE they don't all start out with that dude as a coach.
I think all of them watched tutorials their first years, some of them like Craig Jones have even said they did. But after a while you need a good coach of course
you're obviously going to level your game up the fastest by crosstraining and competing a shit ton, the problem is that a lot of people (especially hobbyists) just cant do that. that's what instructionals are for
