I watched this for about 2 minutes, listening to his commentary and watching his movement and awareness and thought to myself like so many others here, "No way in hell he's a white belt." Then I looked at the video description, and read his explanation. I decided to crunch some numbers, and realized, yes this is plausible, however it is not probable for most of us regular athletes. Here's how I broke it down: He's been training ~15 months, 9x per week. Let's say 1 hour each time (probably more, but just for sake of ease.) Anyway, 1 year is 52 weeks, 3 months is ~15 weeks. 52+15=67 weeks training. 67x9x/wk=603 training sessions total. Let's compare that to the casual BJJ athlete training 2x/wk. 67x2=134 training sessions for the casual student. 603/134=4.5 That means he has 4.5x the training experience as the casual student for the same time period, or the equivalent to 5.6 years+ worth of average training. That would put him in the senior purple belt ranks. So given his background, he may have been wearing a white belt, but he has a natural athleticism and talent for Jiu-Jitsu, combined with at least a senior purple belt's level of training experience. Puts things into perspective. Regardless, those Ws were well earned. Congrats!

As a kid I had done a few years of Judo in England. The system there was these colored strips on our white belt. When we moved (back) to Brazil I was given a white belt as the belt system was not equivalent. After about a year I went to a inter- school competition. On the day of the competition my Sensei surprised me with a yellow belt (skipping blue entirely). I felt super proud, but from what he told me he felt it would be in some way unfair for me to compete with "only" a white belt, for me as well as for my opponent. So be proud of what you did, but maybe your coach should have promoted you before the competition.

Youre really good man. You know all the nuances and trendy jiujitsu stuff. Also youre not a white belt in this video. Some people believe its about time on the mat i believe its about how fast you learn the skills
For those who dont know, most competitions require at least 2 years of training (no matter past experience) before you're allowed to compete at higher levels. Josh likely would compete higher but he simply isnt allowed so has to qualify at lower levels. ALSO from my understanding Josh spends a TON of time studying and training to get better ASAP so his 15 months probably is = to 5 years of a casual. Dont hate the on guy its not his choice!!!
Either way, he shouldn't be competing or BE a white belt dawg. It's sandbagging and I'm sure he's very aware of it.. Either he or his school is unnecessarily keeping him at white belt level. It's convenient, at least in competition, that he's so much better than everyone because of this. If he was in a blue belt bracket, he may not have made it that far. Not hating, just saying.
No way. I train at a top gym. 2-3 times a day everyday for the past year and 4 months. Olympic wrestling coaches, ONE, UFC, Olympic judo, and ADCC bjj coaches. This guys is really good regardless of grade. I've heard people say for years they have zero martial arts experience when its clear they have. One of the guys I trained with for years was a Jiu Jitsu wizard but also technically a white belt. Judo black belt, Pro MMA 10-0, was submitting BJJ Blackbelts in MMA. I have a student who just got his blue belt but had grappled for 10 years and was a competitive wrestler, he's at least purple belt level on the mat albeit to be fair probably doesn't have the knowledge of the Gi of a regular purple belt, I've seen him no gi submit brown belts too. Yes it's hours not years. I suspect the lad here has done some form of similar martial art or sport for a long time and has adapted very quickly to No Gi BJJ. Let's compare that to the casual BJJ athlete training 2x/wk. 67x2=134 training sessions for the casual student. 603/134=4.5
That means he has 4.5x the training experience as the casual student for the same time period, or the equivalent to 5.6 years+ worth of average training. I never thought that I would say this but…you roll so beautifully! Well, it IS an art after all. Good stuff!
another banger video, keep it up man!
Thanks man, will do!
Aye? Yellow belt after a blue belt?
@@georgiasomething2064 Yes, in brazilian judo blue is before yellow.
The editing and commentary of this video is brilliant!! Can’t wait to go and watch some more of your videos
This dude is possibly the best example of sand bagging I've seen in BJJ.
The humble bragging is out of control.
Yeah, it's a sign of insecurity - he wanted to be the big dog in the little dog park. His school and coaches are just as much to blame - zero honor or hespect.
You’re a beast bro ! i been training Jiujitsu for 3-4 years you would whoop me 😂
Homie Josh your knowledge as a white belt is off the charts bro... NOICE... I'm a white belt and didn't know most of the terminology you were using. Good stuff man. Legit....OSS
I just love your content Josh, keep bringing it💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥🔥
Awesome Work Man Well Done
10 years of BJJ and I never practiced in a gi or was handed a belt. I guess I'm a white belt too.
Also there are people up to black belt level who never rolled without the gi. Also if brown belt stoped practicing for years and come back to the sport he would be a sucker at first before he gets back on track.
Bigger rank equal winning is just a rule not law
That leg roll at the beginning was bad ass
how long have you been grappling bro ? And did u practice an other disciplin before ? Thank u to ur answer brother. Oss!

@@thee_werner_alexander7314 thanks u 💪🏼
First time I've seen one of your videos...
You had me laughing pretty hard w some of the subtitles. Good work , keep it up.
I'm incredibly impressed that you're so good and so passionate, but it's really douchie to sand bag this hard in my opinion.
Every video you put out is you beating purple, brown and black belts... it's clear you're not in the division you should be in .
Your fundamentals are great bro, that wedge control from the back to regain your hooks was amazing.
“I had been training for about a year and 3 month about 9 times a week”
“I had no prior grappling experience before starting jiujitsu “
I don’t believe you Josh Rich. I grappled with Chris. He is one of my favorite partners and I know he is too good for any “white belt” (as you claim you were at this time). So, please, stop promoting stupid stuff that you can be good with a little training. It is wrong. And it is wrong to put someone down who has real knowledge and experience in martial arts.
I personally know him, and I can tell you that he genuinely had no prior experience.
@@sofiakashtelyan6223 you're lying homie. I train at a top gym and see 100s of people come through. This kid is a savant if he is not lying. No one gets the positional awareness without several years of training.
I have been training for a while and I don't believe this guy either. He is way too knowledgeable. The way he is flowing from attack to attack very well would be the best I have ever seen if it was his second year.
Hes a 9 year white belt lool
@@hammer12482 BJ Penn would like a word. He got his black belt in 3 years.
so dope dude i love this you're a legend.
Provided that you are telling the whole truth (no grappling experience before), you are incredibly talented. I've never seen someone move so effortlessly with so little experience. Congrats.
Real white belts do not move this way. In no BJJ school would he be a white belt...
@@rw6497 I was promoted really quick to blue because I was tapping all other white belts that had been training for longer, and I wasn't even close to being close to this. That was like 4 years ago and I'm still nowhere near this (probably will never be lol)
@@pymebones that happens as well. We had a Russian kid with 4 years of sambo experience that moved from white to purple in 14 months. It was super obvious that he had training and he never hid it from anybody. Super nice kid. Reading what you wrote and my experiences tells me it obvious he should have never revered as a white belt or beginner. It's that apparent . The young man in the video is no doubt talented though...
@@rw6497 it's strange. I checked his instagram and it seems like he is telling the truth, so super talented i guess
Anybody wanting to become good very quickly, it doesn’t happen overnight.. he’s had a year and 3 months training at release of video. Guaranteed some type of prior experience wether it was curiousity or what. You won’t get better if you don’t grind and stay motivated. This is what he wanted.
Great respect to you, young man! Another fantastic video!
Dude! What an awesome video bro! I love this! It's very inspiring and makes me ready for tomorrow's 6 A.M. class. 😁
Thanks man have a nice 6am class! You’re a beast for being able to get up that early lol
Sid is unreal man!!
Putting Chris on blast like that damnnn he’s a pretty chill homie I know him from the skatepark in jax good dude. This guy knows way more about jiujistu than a white belt 😅🤣
There's definitely something he's not telling us. By definition it is impossible for a white belt to beat a brown belt. If that were to occur that means that you are either not a white belt or he is not a brown belt. Either two different coaches simultaneously messed up when grading you both, or you're lying
Maybe the brown belt was in a bad day.
I'd say both or your statements are true.
Hes a high school wrestling champ who basically sandbagged in BJJ doing only No Gi for years and skipping promotions and is like a competitive purple belt acting like a white belt. Most white belts cant even spell Tarikoplata much less know the move much less do one. Its prettt obvious he's pool hall hustling where you pretend to be bad, get someone to put up tons of cash and then smoke them.
@@JesusChrist2000BC thank you for that revelation jesus
lol it's obvious not impossible cos we just saw it. quit being salty
I’m a wrestler looking to get into BJJ and his horrible fake shot attempts made me think wrestling might actually do something for me in BJJ. Honestly it’s like art the way you move in BJJ. Super beautiful keep the content coming bro.
Hard to take down someone who pulls gard
This guy naturally has the stamina, limb control/flexibility and tactical smarts to be good for jiu jitsu.
Talent
Keep up the great work! I think people are surprised about your level of skill & knowledge. I’m not surprised, I can see the Danaher Death Squad influence in your technique and approach. Those Danaher & Gordon instructional are game changing, for sure!
This kid never misses a session!...unless it's grading day I guess 🤷♂️
Stumbled accross this video of yours here, and your channel, loved it though! Entertaining content! :)
This should be titled FAKE white belt.
Absolute rubbish!! Hes no white belt i agree!
agreed, turned me off this channel real quick lol
I've seen person talented like you but for boxing, it's always unbelievable watching these kind of talented people.
I appreciate the breakdown of your videos, also they have touches of funny, my son who is 11 started BJJ 6 mths ago just got gold in first competition we train at 10th planet of orange park (FL), I also just started so I can practice with him, & help him learn, it’s fun but as a middle age (45) premenopausal women it’s a tad painful but still fun, anyway thx for videos there awesome…
Yay that’s awesome to hear, congrats to your son!
Bro’s the only one wearing a shirt and pants from the pineapple pen music video.
Youre really good man. You know all the nuances and trendy jiujitsu stuff. Also youre not a white belt in this video. Some people believe its about time on the mat i believe its about how fast you learn the skills
this editing is really good (funny) bro, you had me lol'ing at the wrestling part!
We have top level talent(world champs), I train over 10 times a week this guy says 9. I've met extremely few people that pick up bjj well in a year, never met a white belt tap a brown belt. This dude has to be lying 🤥 I've met savants that give world class black belts a run thats taken them years. This dude moves at least like a purple. If this guy is legit he's a literal God. It's not possible in the time frame he says even with privates from the best in the world (I've gotten them on a weekly basis). I crush whites and blues, not even close to purple yet.
@@hammer12482 well that's the thing you're comparing yourself to world class people. You'll find in more casual gyms like mine, we got a blue belt who can tap 2 of our brown belts. They're in Their late 30s and hes 27 trains 6 days a week + gym work outs.
@@hammer12482 also, I dont think people realise that some human beings just "click". Josh gets passed a certain way? He drills a defence for the next 3 hours. His opponent escaped his leg lock? He drills leg locks for the next 3 hours. It's not photographic memory but I dont think people realise how inefficiently we all learn + inefficiently coached. It's like faker the league of legends player. Extremely complex game equal to chess. In 6 months he was rank 1 in the world. Good learners only make a rookie error once or twice then they permanently improve it. Josh would binned by Brown belts 95% of the time im sure.
On what planet is it not his choice? Who put a gun to his head and made him compete? You're just as sleazy as he is.
i've seen very good and talented white belts give hell of a fights to even black belts, rare, but not imposible. There's always "that one guy"; besides que says that hes been training for over 9 times a week, thats a considerable number of mat hours. Hope to see you in IBJJF worlds 🤙
Besides, he submitted him because they where in EBI overtime, which gave him the back position. Thats a whole new world of advantadge
He'll progress though his belts very quickly I imagine.
thats because his coaches sandbag him in order for him to win more gold medals for them 💀 i do BJJ and this guy should clearly not be a white belt in any organization
@@cementfists but in the description it says he's been training for 1 year and 3 months with no previous grappling experience
can't believe you have a small following. your content is amazing! keep it up!
Dude may have a "white belt" but that's simply because your teacher didn't give you a blue/purple. This dude is flowing into a calf slicer from the top lol, no white belt can do that.
what if... and this might be a crazy thought... but what if, you TAUGHT a white belt to do that? omg did i just shatter your reality?
Great video, extra respect for showing your defeat in the final match, keep up the great work
Lmao white belt? Dude just show up to belt promotion day you are obviously experienced
Dude, very impressive. trying to improve, understanding where you are. Very nice, keep moving forward!!
The amount of people saying you must have had grappling experience other than this is hilarious. I actually know this guy IRL and I can definitely confirm that no he has not had other experience and he just really loves BJJ, he literally dropped out of college to make it his career which seems to be working out well for him. Good shit Josh
Thank you Zjaeriq! I really appreciate it
All these years my dog has been dragging its butt on the carpet, now I know he actually wanted to grapple and didn’t have an itchy butt. Jokes aside been liking your videos 😂
bro this is cap lol
Damn I watched your whole video it was dope. Then it ends with my homie Sid leglocking you 😂😂😂 kids a beast
Hip switch and knee cut are solid passes!! Kept it up
You did an outstanding job. Keep up, and you will be an excellent black belt.
Thanks man!
Ain’t no white belt I know that transitions that smoothly. Nice title tho
the way you sat down after multiple feints is just the most bjj thing ever
cracked me up
Watching the whole match is worth it man! good job and congratulations!!! OSS!! 🤙🤙🤙
You're a natural dude, good fights.
This is Such an amazing narration. Subscribed for sure
Epic. I’m gonna start training after school gets out in a month or so.
Awesome to hear!
Bro, keep at it. You’d smoke me and I’ve been training much longer probably. Some guys just learn freakishly fast.
Great commentary young man. very nice moves. you will go far in whatever avenue you apply yourself. stay humble as your attitude is one of the reasons I just subscribed. good luck and I look forward to watching your art grow.
Just started watching your stuff and saw your hair and instantly recognized you at grappling industries in md. You got away before I had a chance to come over.
Great matches my man! Awesome tenacity to escape that arm bar/slicer in OT!! 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Amazing man keep pushin and F Tha haters 💪♥️🙏
okay, Tariloplata I gotta use that one soon . But impressive no less . The movements, the positions, trapping arms, and knowing the concepts in each of the positions took me ten years to grasp. My white belt took 14 months to achieve- I guess I must be a real slow learner comparing to you.
Major props brother! ✊
Great breakdown, commentary and exquisite skills.
I remember years ago. There were bunch of world champion blue belts from Brazil defeating American brown belts. Found out there been blue belts for almost 10 year lol!!!
That guy that beat you was so hyped thought you got to the finals or something for a sec there
20 yo purple belt here - good shit bro more advanced than most bluebelts already maybe one day we can compete on the big screen together🤙
Solid sir!! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
From the first match I was thinking no f way you are a white belt but found myself cheering you on in the later matches anyway. You could definitely be a white belt here but with the skill of a purple belt. Great video either way 🤙
Brown belt definitely needed to be humbled glad it was you 🙏
I love how you put this together!
I like this style of vid. Engaging and entertaining.
