  • PS2 that was made in late 2001 which I purchased new. Back in 2006 I lubed it & replaced the laser worm gear due to it clicking badly and not reading disc (I have a video of that too from way back then). The clicking returned a bit at times but never got to the point of not reading discs. I decided to go ahead & open it up again & lube up the laser guide rails & the laser worm gear. Seems to be working as good as new. Best $300 I ever spent was on the PS2. BTW this is the model # SCPH 30001R.

      Funny how the PS2 is now considered old tech. I mean it's still amazing machine even from a technological standpoint. The original playstation came out in 95 and has like 2 megs of ram, PS2 came out in 2000 had 32 megs of ram, PS3 2006 had 512 megs of ram, and PS4 2013 has 8 gigs of ram. Just amazing how fast it's all progressed I think it has to start slowing down soon but maybe not.

      I was given a bonus at work and bought the original Wii along with the Wii Fit with the intention of me and my wife doing some exercise. We did keep it up for a while, both developed bad shoulders and elbows from playing the tennis and baseball. We still have it and bring it out on odd occasions when the grandchildren are bored but they have X boxes etc so it is probably just keeping the grandparents amused when they play it.

    Thank you for uploading this, I've tried looking around for videos on what I should use & all I seen was just people taking apart their console & putting it back together. My console finally stopped making that horrid clicking sound when playing certain games. It use to click loudly up to the point where I wasn't playing 11 of the ps2 games I bought recently.

      Glad to be of help. This first time I repaired it 10 years before this video I replaced the little white plastic piece that attaches to the laser with one screw. The 2 little teeth on it that rides in the worm gear had troughs wore in them and it was just skipping over the worm gear. I robbed the little plastic piece off another PS2 laser and cleaned it well and used white lithium grease and it lasted 10 years up until I lubed it again in this video. Bending it while holding a lighter close to it (not too close) also I hear works wonders to stop it from skipping by slightly reshaping the plastic to hold firmer onto the worm gears but I've not had to do that myself. Just bending it a little by hand probably enough after cleaning it good.

    Just completely restored my PS2 from 2002 also, and this video is exactly what I needed to know which parts of the drive assembly needed re-greasing. I used White Lithium Grease by Lucas Oil Products. Thank you!
    Edit: There is also a guard rail under the disc tray too. I greased that part also, after cleaning the lint from it.

    The small black bracket that holds the right slide bar for the laser is broken on mine. So it grinds and goes out of place

    My launch slim has a similar issue where the drive will click and attempt to spin up a disc multiple times before reading it, particularly with CDs. I have read it could be caused by the laser sled hitting the end of the gear when it's sent to the center to read a disc. The discs read fine once they load. Do you think lubricating the worm gear could fix this?

    • @Nesmaniac
      @Nesmaniac  Рік тому +1

      Sounds like the little 2 tooth piece that rides in the worm gear groves. I think on slims they are metal so you might just bend it very slightly to were it can ride into the worm gear with more force so it won't slip out as easy. While in there put a little bit on white lithium grease on the worm gear as well.

    • @wyattazcooks

      @@Nesmaniac Appreciate your advice. I looked into it some more and the repeated spinning and 'clicking' might also be the laser moving as it struggles to focus. I gave it a wipe with isopropyl, and it works somewhat better. If lowering the resistance doesn't help I'll just cut my losses and buy a new laser. Wish they didn't require that bit of solder, though.

    Quick question, is there a hole on the spindle motor to apply sewing machine oil? I might sound nuts, but want to cover everything when I open my PS2.

    • @Nesmaniac
      @Nesmaniac  3 роки тому

      I don't think so I never heard of anyone oiling a small electric motor I think it would just cause issues by attracting globs of material and dust to build up in one place.

    • @Nesmaniac
      @Nesmaniac  2 роки тому +1

      Yes.. The little white 2 teeth gear that rides in the brass work gear screw when they start slipping the games will have trouble loading until eventually they won't load at all. I was playing scarface years ago on PS2 and it stopped loading right in the middle of gameplay which before that it had been making the grinding noise. That was when I first fixed it in like 2007.

    Could this be the problem with my ps2 fat version cause mine I can play it for 10 to 15 minutes then it make awful noise like a train on a rail road or something I'm thinking it's the rails needing lubed but I'm not sure please help!

    • @Nesmaniac
      @Nesmaniac  6 років тому +1

      Very likely to be the little gear that attaches to the laser is slipping off the worm gear. Depending on model of PS2 mine has a little white plastic gear and sometime you can simply take them off and use a lighter to heat it a little and bend it down so as it will stay in the worm gear groves more solid. There's just 2 little teeth on that piece so I recommend trying that and getting white grease & using your finger to smear a bit on the metal guide rails & the worm gear & 2 teeth that contact the worm gear. If you are not familiar with the PS2 or good at this sort of thing let someone else do it. You need to be careful not to rip any of the tiny ribbon cables especially the one when you first lift the top off the system and tilt it forward to clear the dvd drive door because the power reset button has a small ribbon cable attached which you leave attached but you have to flip the top of the console over on it's top so the cable is not tore or stretched. Watch videos on youtube that cover this. If you gear teeth is worn down then you might have to buy that piece but they are cheap but generally what I said will fix it. While you are in there use a q-tip and rubbing alcohol apply small about on qtip to where it's just damp and wipe in a small circular motion over the lens and then do the same with the dry end. PS2's like these are very durable if you maintain them and treat them gentle mine still going strong after nearly 16 years now.

    • @Nesmaniac
      @Nesmaniac  6 років тому

      I'd be afraid of it eating the plastic up softening it. I've only heard of people using white lithium grease for plastic gears that's what they use on RC cars and toys. I've read sewing machine oil as well but never have used it or had any of it.

    • @Nesmaniac

      Most like that little white plastic piece (has 2 teeth on it that rides in worm gear grooves) needs replaced. It fastens to the laser with a screw and some people fix them by heating them up a little and bending it down to where it fits firmer into the groves on worm gear. Cheap piece to replace though but laser has to come off to replace that piece but it's not hard just be careful not to damage laser ribbon cable.

      Other grease can soften the gear so I highly recommend white lithium grease it's what sony and other companies use and last long time. It's not expensive and a can will last a lifetime and handy for door locks, hinges, etc....

    • @Nesmaniac
      @Nesmaniac  3 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure I have never tried it. Some grease will destroy the plastic teeth that ride in the metal worm gear if it softens it any at all which is why I prefer what toys have been using on plastic gears for years which is the white lithium grease.

    • @Nesmaniac

      I've heard that it's harsh on plastic so I would not use it. It's bad about attracting dust and stuff as well. White lithium grease is the way to go and it's cheap and widely available last I checked at least. A can last so long I've never had to buy anymore.

      Nesmaniac what about wd40v

    • @Nesmaniac
      @Nesmaniac  4 роки тому +2

      @@adidas1984x WD would probably be ok but it's pretty thin. To me nothing beats the white lithium grease for the plastic to metal parts or plastic to plastic. There's a reason all the old toys I've taken apart over the years have used it in the gears and such. I use it for home and vehicle door locks too it just sticks around good and won't damage the plastic over time. WD I think might not be rated for lots of plastics so those 2 little teeth on that laser gear could soften fairly quickly but I can't say for sure I've not tried it.
