I was about to buy a ps2 backwards ps3 to replace my ps2, til I found this video. My PS2 is once again the powerhouse of my setup, my one question is, can the Linux kit from sony share and work off the hdd with the loader on the hard drive?
I wish more companies did what Microsoft did with the 360. Installing a game to your hard drive and using the disc to verify ownership basically eliminates the need for a consumer to mod a console to get quiet playback, and doesn't force them to buy a new digital copy.
I did this for a while, but now I stream the isos directly off the network with openps2loader. So much more storage, and no more plugging the drive in & out.

How is the compability on the new OpenPS2Loader for sata hdds ? Back in the day i got one and i was using opl 0.8 and some games were not working on the sata adapter , butt were on the ide one ?
Do a video on 2tb PS2 interal HDD. Here's how to do it. Get and install the 2TB version of ULE to your PS2 FreeMCBoot memory card. Format the 2TB HDD on the PS2 itself through ULE 2TB. Then hook the HDD to the PC and use HDL_HDD_Batcher_v1 to add games. Remember to separate your DVDs and CDs and do them by themselves. This is how I got a 2TB harddrive to work and online guides and videos are little to none. I found one video with a guy who kind of explained it, but the program he used was extremely buggy and you had to start all over to change anything. THIS A RARE THING, please, please make a video of it.
@@TechJames I think it's a better method, better cleaner programs that aren't glitchy. Yes it's excessive and rare that someone would ever need that much space, but it gives the option. The other reason that it's kind of a big deal is that there's not much info out there about going pass 1TB.

Hi there, for some reason while loading the game list on OPL, the artwork for each game doesn't appear despite installing properly through OPL manager. I also enabled artwork in the video settings. It shows up for PS2 games loaded through the usb drive or even PS1 games on USB, but not the hard disk.

I've noticed sometimes when trying to format the hard drive in win hip it will not let me 1st time around, I have to exit out and come back in and do it a second time, sort of a double tap. I think what's happening is Win hip is deleting the drive like you did in the video, the second time around it'll format it. Hope this helps someone. But you nailed it when you said it has to be unallocated, very helpful info sir thank you again.
I actually ordered a hard drive before watching this video so I panicked when I saw the compatibility list. Luckily the hard drive I ordered is compatible so no further problems to be seen for now.

I have the original PS2 HDD Adapter that supports IDE (actually have 2 of them) from Sony and was looking into a Hard Drive for it, but found an IDE to SD Card Adapter. Would that work? I don't see any reason why it wouldn't.

@Vegan Pete itll last longer because there's no moving parts it'll be more reliable overall it'll draw less power it'll make less Heat what else could you want it probably would be a little bit faster still but not be all that noticeable there's other good things about having an ssd instead of an hdd
Used Winhiip for PS2 games, now how do I use my spare 130GB on my harddrive for PS1 games? Should I have done a partition before I started? As Winhiip written to the raw harddrive. I presume I need to do this for my covers also....

If you want to be able to use the network and a sata hard drive you can buy a replacement board for the official Sony network adapter that changes it from IDE to Sata, that's what I did personally
Great tutorial! I just ordered the Gamestar PS2 network adapter because the Original one from Sony only had IDE and I have an extra 40gb SATA drive from a PS3 HD I had upgraded. So, I did the tutorial, only thing is I had moved a PS2 Cd game the bin/cue one to the HD with Winhiip, it is asking me if it is a CD or DVD and I put CD will it run properly? Your tutorial only shows ISO files.
Those heaving a hard time trying to get the HDD recognized on WinHIIP , HDL dumper or even on PS2, make sure that your drive is set to Master. That little piece of plastic jumper at the back of your drive should be on master, check where is master for your drive on google. You are welcome!
The biggest issue I had when learning about PS2 hacking is that the HDD has IDE and SATA differences. So pay attention there! If it looks big and bulky in the back it's a IDE, and there is no alternative to buy a USA SATA, so you'll have to get one from CHINA to install a SATA hard drive! Wish I knew this in advance but it is what it is! Great video, James!

Is there a way to setup my HDD if I was already using it externally with OPL? Or do I really need to format it & then also convert (some) of the games back into ISO?
I installed everything and it seemed to work great at first, but after I got one game to play, every time I attempt to run another or the same game that worked before, I just get a black screen. The same deal with HD Loader. First attempt ran the game fine, but now everything goes to black screen when I attempt to play them. They show up on the Loader lists, they just don't boot up. Any ideas?
@@Jaksmack Nope. I think the chip the that controls the optical drive is damaged to the point that it wont even start games from the SSD. May try it on another working fat PS2 if you have access to one. I bought mine broken on ebay, so I expected it to have problems.
Didn't work for me. When formatting my drive which appears on the web page compatibility list WinHIIP says my drive has -184.99Gb of free space. Therefore it cannot be formatted.
@@zairman I have since worked this out. For me it was because the drive volume was too big to be recognized. I ended up using a 500gb drive. Still has plenty of space for games, i think i have close to 100 on there now.

I keep getting error messages about a problem writing to disc and reading from disc. I've used the same hard drive before and I can get a couple games on it before it constantly gives that error. Anyone got an idea?
You don't need free MC boot if your PS2 has a mod chip installed that supports hard drives like the Modbo 4 and Mars Pro HD. Just use the HD Loader disc and go.

I have been using a very old game loader on my hard modded PS2. It does not support game covers. The one thing i miss is not being able to get back into the game menu when i want to play another game. I have to reset the PS2 every time. Are you able to get back into the game menu by using a button combo like many game launchers that are around now??
Hey James I followed the steps to unallocated but the moment I did that I was no longer able to see the drive on my PC. When I open winhip to select drive doesn't show up at all. Though when I type Disk Management it shows up on there......please help fix

A 500 GB Solid State Drive is another option as my suggestion because solid state drives run faster than HDDs.

if your SSD is formatted to fat32 and the game fits in 4 gb it will work. On ps2 slim with usb-sata adapter works fine.

48 bit is for hard drives above 120gb of space, if you use the 28 bit you won't be able to use past 120gb of the total size.

There are also kits now that will let us convert our official PS2 Network/IDE adapter so it uses SATA instead; they cost about $25 on Amazon.

You just have to open the app again select the drive and add image (your games) and that’s it

psx to psp converter will do it for you.

Instead of trying to convert them just download the PSP eboot of the PS1 game. That's assuming you have a cfw PSP.

You can create virtual memories, but not all games are compatible.
For example, resident evil 4 freezes when you save to virtual memory card.

Hey James I followed the steps to unallocated but the moment I did that I was no longer able to see the drive on my PC. When I open winhip to select drive doesn't show up at all.
Though when I type Disk Management it shows up on there......please help fix

The SATA adapater that came with my ps2 from ebay had the sticker and no port at all, just smooth plastic under!

no ps1 games sadly cant be loaded by the hdd, nor an usb stick - which is a god damn shame.
Ehi , maybe you can convert the VCD file in elf and try launchELF
@@davidl5786 no I dont think so. the ps1 hardware cant be reached with the usb (sadly because that would be perfect) i am not even sure if you could play burned ps1 games on ps2 in any way.

Since you're booting ISO's on real hardware is compatibility for both PS1 and PS2 games 100%?
The 260 game limit is WinHIIP's flaw. You do have to use it to format the hard drive, but I highly recommend installing games onto it with HDLdump.
