So this works because you are removing the fixed ground from the block and relocating it to a ground on the handle to a intermittent ground right? I have a Troy bilt mower I am wanting to do this with and still learning how to work on small engines
We just did this on an old push weed eater... I'm going back to fix it right. I never thiuvht about using the existing wire we have always just ziptied it closed and then hung a wire out of spark plug. Very neat way I will be doing it like this everytime from now on!
Hello thank you I only have 2 questions what stops the flywheel and where does the wire attach to. I heard you say coil but you didn’t show. On a coil how many wires come of of it 1 or 2.
Perfect! I have an Edger with a engine brake cable that is difficult to pull for some reason. I know it will result in a new cable shortly. I’ve been thinking about a kill switch but was unsure about if there was another component in the system that would cause problems. Your video was most helpful. Thank You!
Unfortunately I can't hear the video at this time but I'll re-watch later when I can but I have an old mower that doesn't have a kill switch. The only way I can shut off the mower is to either let it run out of fuel or ground out the spark plug which is what I do lol. It works great but not exactly easy for my child to use lol. Anyway I tried to make a kill switch but I can't start the thing with it on. Maybe I need a thicker jacketed wire I'm not sure but if I put it on after mower starts it works great except it kind defeats the purpose if I have to install after it's started and it also hurts a bit sometimes. Regardless I want others to be able to use it without me. Any opinions other then paying $250 for a new mower that's only going to last a couple years? This mower is about as old as me but still runs like a beast. My last mower died after 2yrs and needed a small part for 120 buck which is why I said the heck with new crap lol.
my son just snapped my cable...I zip-tied the brake "off" and fired it up to make sure it still ran, going to install a switch now so I don't to pull the spark plug wire next time!
I like the video. My cub cadet mower is not stopping when I release brake cable and as far as I can see the cable is not damaged. What do you the the problem might be?
The brake itself may be completely worn down. It almost may be the spring is worn out. If it’s not shutting off electrically, as in the spark plug is not having its spark stoped, your switch may be bad. There might be something blocking the cable from going in all the way. Hard to say without seeing it but maybe that will help a little bit.
This is a great alternative. I had to do a cable delete on an older mower and made do by just reversing the spring on the brake to keep it open, and then when done mowing, manually put pressure on the brake in the normal direction to kill the motor. I think I have a momentary switch in my box of salvaged parts that would work perfect for this.
One thing to keep in mind is when you delete the brake on the flywheel: When you turn off the mower using that new kill switch, the blade will continue to spin for around 30 seconds due to momentum. So stick your hand in the chute you will loose your fingers. Lol
As soon as the mower stops (delayed compared to the brake but no more than about 6 seconds) the blade stops too. It's definitely not 30 seconds but definitely something to be aware of because that brake does stop it quick!
Thanks for sharing your information but I would like some advice if you can. I tried two different style of switches and Switch style (1) didn't work, Switch style (2) worked so please read on and please tell me why :) . My kill switch cable seized/broke so I decided to bypass it as per your video. Switch Style (1) I had an extra illuminated toggle switch, 12V/20amp and wired it up as per your directions, however it won't turn the mower off. If the switch is on "ON" position, the mower won't start, as expected, I move the toggle to "OFF" and the mower starts and runs perfectly, as expected. However, if I flip the toggle to "ON" again to turn engine off, the mower keeps running without a hiccup. I removed the connector from the "+" terminal, grounded it to the handle and the mower turned off. I tried a second identical switch with the identical results. :( Time to try another style of switch. Switch Style (2) I had an old Push On/Push Off little button switch from a disassembled aquarium light (I just disassemble last week - lucky me) and decided to try it. I installed it using the same wiring as the other switch and it works like a charm!!!!! Scratching my head here not understanding why the first switched did not work? Any insight/input from anybody would be appreciated. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge on the subject. :)
Man I really have no idea. Thats one of the strangest things I have heard. I am really not an electrical guy, I can do basics but I really have no idea why one switch (two samples) would not work and another would. I'd ask an electrician friend haha!
P Scott do u mean a switch for a bed side lamp type a switch so u can turn the lite off I'm in the same issue wiring and Lecky is not my favourite jobs
@@ronniebarker79 No, this was an illuminated toggle switch that is used in cars. I happened to have them for a project I was doing and thought I would try one. I have since figured out that if I wire it simply as an On/Off switch without the toggle tip illuminating then it works fine. Good luck with yours as I am a novice in this department for sure!
@@PaulScott_ what I have done but won't know it works until morning small baby next door is I've got a terminal plastic block screwd down my coil wire near where my brake is next to that I have a blue wire bolted down on the side of engine as a ground now back to terminal block I've carried the coil wire onto the on and off switch further up my handle bars but can't try it until morning what do u think
@@ronniebarker79 Sounds like a variation of what I did - it should work as the "ground" circuit when closed as I understand it will turn the mower off. Let me know how it works!
Just FYI, I’m sure a new brake cable costs as much as $15 bucks, and if you use it frequently, considering that stout spring, you’ll surely be buying them. Again, great video!!
You want to use a momentary ON push button switch. If you use a toggle switch I guarantee you will turn it off & leave it off. Next time you go to start you will forget and you will yank & yank & yank & yank until FINALLY you remember. So, use a push button. you will thank yourself again & again & again. !
I would use a momentary switch that is normally closed. When you press the button, it opens the circuit and kills the engine rather than having to keep flipping the switch which can wear it out. Also, you could use a rod with a handle to manually set the brake.
you could have skipped all the extra wire and just spliced into the factory ground lead and to the engine. Drill a hole in the cover and install the switch. no fuss.
I wouldn't let you touch anything of mine ,u don't even clean the dead grass off the mower while you work on it and with the gas cap off the whole time, doesn't show much pride in workmanship
Enjoyed your Video , worked on mowers for over forty years and some of those brake cable are high and Ive done these several times.

Yeaa.. he did miss the most important part explaining what is he doing
Thanks for this. Exactly what I wanted to know!
Loved it ! got rid of all that safety junk. Thank you.
Nice... my damn cable just broke. I think Imma give this a shot!
Hope it worked man!

Super clean wiring and good job on fixing that lawn mower. Those toggle switches work good.
Thanks dude. I think it’s a pretty nice job done. Hopefully it works for years to come.
What was the gauge of that wire that you ran?
Those darn springs! Lol... looks good, I can see this type of work around being used in many ways. 👍
You say you aren’t responsible but you could be for the ones you are paid to do…. Thanks for the video!

I'm doing this to my lawnmower Thank you
Say if I were to use a momentary and I'm caught in a sudden down pour. Is there a possibility of getting zapped?
Cool. Very informative. Only if I had a lawnmower, dosen't cut scrub brush, lol. Good job.
Yupp, a lot of that around our parts!
Hi I loved you vid and I did what you did with my rig can I do this with a key switch because I want to make my lawnmower to have that
It should work with a key switch, the only difference would be using a key to flip the switch instead of a little ball and lever.
@@DereksWorkshopAndProjects can you send a link to what you would use for it and thanks for replying 😁

Just pull that lever that operates the brake and the spring will be loose, then it will come right off.
Hes not bright enough
Do you have a video reloading the spring for the rope on the pull start, thanks
I don't but many others do. Thanks for watching.

I needed to sawp a push mower engine to replace a pressure washer engine. I think this is what I need to do
That would probably do the trick.
Is good if the cable is missing thanks ✨
It will work without the cable.
Great vid, going to do a similar modification on my rototiller
Probably an even better piece of equipment for this. Sometimes the safety stuff is just more trouble than it’s worth. Good luck.

A little bit confusing, the spark wire not that spark plug wire.
You can leave the brake for the flywheel

What is the purpose of attaching the other wire to the handle (with the yellow contact)
It grounds out the electrical to machine to keep the electrical pulses from causing a spark.
Your so underrated

I just put a single plug on lawnmower buh is feeling the electricity

That mechanism is called a coil
Ya spaced it in the moment.
What the heck i am watching
What the heck are any of us really watching?
Should of put it inside the handle, less likely to get snagged on something
what? no duct tape?? any good self-respecting DIYer uses duct tape.
