The manufacturer didn’t mess up. When the switch is on.. the ground is established and kills the engine because the mag is grounded. When the switch is off… the ground to the mag is broken allowing it to run.
The manufacturer was correct. On is when the circuit is completed, thus providing ground to pass through the switch which kills your engine. In any normal case, it would be letting electricity to pass through which would turn something on. You could try to turn the on/off plate around, because it won't matter if you reverse the wires.
They did not mess up the ON and OFF normally on would be making a connection between the 2 wires but in the case of the engine connecting the 2 wires Kills the engine. so when it is in the Off position the circuit is open and the engine will run and when in the on position the connection is closed and won't run.
I don't want to sound nit-picky, but while the engine may be labeled as an MTD, that is either a license relabel, license built or clone of a Briggs n Stratton 5-hp. I had the original Briggs version on my go-kart growing up. So the information you are showing will work for those engines too.
HELP Please... I have a 15.5 Techumse engine with all the wiring cut off and left hanging... I figured it should start with my booster pack... pos to the starter, and neg to the frame... But theres No Spark from the coil... It worked fine before the engine was removed and the wiring harness cut off... But it still should start...!?? I even took coil/magneto off and cleaned all surfaces and put bk on... gapped corectly yes... and removed ground wire also and still nothing... Only wires left are the coil wire hanging cut at end... a yellow & black wire coming from inside the engine it looks like, and thats it... But shouldn't there be spark from that coil.? Even tried a diff plug... I figured it would start, and i'd just have to pull the plug wire to shut it down...? Any1 know.?
Great vid, I need a killswitch on my go-cart, does the earth wire have to be earthed to the engine or can it be earthed to the body of the go-cart and still do the same job? Thanks
In the on position its closing the circuit. Like when you turn lights on. On your case by closing the circuit you ground out the coil.. your using the switch in a manner thataround. Not intended for. Just turn the on off indicator aroind.
Before I wired the stop/run switch, this engine used the throttle lever to stop the engine. The lever would be pulled to the stop position causing a wire to ground, which would short out the spark plug. When I wired it with the stop/run switch, I removed the wire from the throttle lever and put it on the switch. With that, I believe the throttle would need to be in the idle position up to full throttle and the switch would need to be on for the engine to run. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks

Fantastic video......An added feature is the great comments re the grounding function of kill switch. Great info and keep up the great work !!!
This video saved me so much time

Will the engine still turn on if the switch is closed or is it just fully off with nothing happens when you hit the starter?
Exactly. It can be thought of as "Kill on" and "Kill off". Kill on kills, kill off doesn't.
YOUR is the BEST VIDEO, I have seen on how to put on a kill switch👍
Thank you.
Awesome help me out a lot thank you sir
I have a love hate relationship with those little Briggs engines... more love though🙂 and videos like THIS is why I'm on UA-cam thx guy
Just like to say ty for putting this video up helped me 👍🏻
Glad I could help
Thank you brotha.
Now I'm more interested in that wire stripper... What was that?
Useful, thank you so much
Thanks boss 👍🏻

Now, Drill a hole in the cowling and mount the damn switch!

You can ground it both to the chassis and engine

Tim, what is the difference between the kill switch and the stop run switch. Can both be on or just need one.
thanks

What kinda wire is on the kill switch?
Briggs and stratton made that engine
They use a platinum style in the bag for that
no the switch is working lol
Can you help me with a wiring issue?
