  • Today we'll be talking about the Raider Class Corvette - a nice imperial ship with some cool backstory, but one which was ultimately improperly used by the Empire. That and more for today's Star Wars video!

@@anzaca1 well, the Time Skip is the missing middle section or scene where they could say, got hit pretty hard and had to do some repairs with some CR-90 Parts and make some upgrade while they at it.
i mean, two logical options would be, they had to cut 1-2 Missions or the designers thought it would be fun to have a new Republican Version of the Raider, but it misses an explanation of the how or why.
But the design is quite thoughtfull and makes sense if you think about it: they changed the engines and Solar Panels with some Spare parts that looks like some CR-90 engines because the Rebellion//Republic did not had that much OEM Parts for an Raider Class Corvette

Or that fact that was hinted at by a DICE employee, that the campaign was originally almost entirely Imperial, but as the story development neared completion, Disney popped in and said the game had to be about "the good guys" so the story had to be hastily rewritten.

It would go great with other “remote” patrol ships like Venators and especially the mighty Praetors. Those guys would be big enough to CARRY raiders lol. And on that subject, why didn’t every ISD have a CR90 in its belly? It would make for great recon and anti fighter support. Two things the TIE fighter often struggles with. And we know you can fit at least one. The first three minutes of A New Hope make that clear and yet we never see it again.

Loved the Raider. Neat design, fit the aesthetic of the Empire without feeling too forced. Curious what a commander like Thrawn could have done with a small battlegroup of these. Even outside of direct combat engagements, this would have been a great patrol craft for the outer regions or even some of the core worlds. Maybe even some variations (strip the hangar and replace it with light broadside capabilities or ass some more forward mounted weaponry. A few ion cannons would have made this a great craft for chasing down and dealing with freighters and frigates, and it would be well defended against possible fighter attacks.

Personally i always liked the idea of smaller ships that are somewhat overpowered for their own good. I can imagine that the designers of this ship had a look at the USS Defiant from Deep Space Nine and went like "Star Wars should have something like that". I actually have an X-Wing Minis Raider. It makes a great centerpiece to my Imperial ships. Photos of the thing don't do it justice, it's MASSIVE.
Regarding the confusion regarding it being a "Legends" ship, X-Wing Miniatures is known for bringing back a LOT of Legends ships like the various TIE variants, the K-Wing, etc. Additionally, X-Wing Miniatures specific content (what little there is of it, anyway) is specifically stated to be non-canon, so while the Raider was never a Legends ship, it did originally fall under the same category as far as canon is concerned.
I don't believe that it doesn't have a reactor, it kinda needs one since even the TIEs had small ones, but it definitely doesn't need nearly as big of one, and can probably cruise under solar power alone. That would give it effectively infinite range within a star system.
As for the hangar on the Raider II, I think it's really just a service hangar just like on the CR-90, designed to accept small shuttles, personal craft, and the like. It's really not big enough for proper carrier duty, at least with manned fighters. Now, if the Empire decided to bring Vultures back into service, that's another story.

Raider I class technically has has 6 double heavy lasercannons, 4 double (light) turbolasers, and a chin mounted ion cannon. (I believe two turbolasers are chin mounted and the other two are on each side. We see in game a quad array on each side. Maybe its a configurable ship, like correlian cr90's or cr92a's).
Raider II corvette just swaps turbolasrs for concusion missles and cluster warheads for starfighters. Better for starfighter screening, but seriously lacks anti capital ship weapons.
My personal head cannon is that the corvus was a modified raider that traded weaponry and reactor space for hanger space and an improved sensor array. Again just me, but i would say an unmodified raider has an additional 2 or 3 double laser cannons on the underside, truly making it a starfighter killing machine. This would eliminate the blind spot under the corvette. And with 4 twin light turbolasers, it matches the firepower of even some cr 90 configurations. I know some people think the raider is under armed, and that may be true for the raider II, but the raider I has 4 twin turbolasers in addition to and ion cannon and 6 heavy laser cannons, which can still pack a punch against enemy Corvettes.

It would've been awesome to see the Raider fill more of a traditional destroyer role. Outfit it with a disproportionate amount of turbolasers, ion cannon, or mass drivers - essentially just specialize the heck out of it - and then use it in an anti-ship role. Charge all weapon capacitors, jump in, release a devastating first strike, and jump out. Rinse and repeat with multiple Raiders and you've got an extremely effective way to take out enemy cruisers and pester larger capital ships.

A small task force consisting of a Lancer, a couple of Raiders, and a Nebulon with attendant fighters would be an ideal Imperial anti-pirate task force. It's pretty much the same tactic I like to use in EAW; herd fighters into a killing zone near a larger ship with the corvettes, then drop in the heavy anti-fighter frigate directly behind them.

The ship really represents the state of the Imperial Navy pre-Galactic Civil War, I personally have a list of ships that the Empire typically has at its disposal for all sorts of mission/situation types.
    Gozanti - cargo transport/passive garrison
    Arquitens - active garrison/local command
Star Destroyer - sector command/fleet supplement
Super Star Destroyer - Fleet command/system command
The Raider class to me fits in between the Gozanti and the Arquitens as it's not as taxing as an Arquitens for supplies yet it can still fight to a much higher degree than a Gozanti and its many variants.

The perception of the Empire is interesting. I mean, the Raider class is not seen as an essential tool, but as far as I know, the captains of the Imperial class in the first round are the captains of the Gozanti class, which is less than half.

The raider would be a great ship to have as an imperial chase vessel for a show of the empire attempting to track down smuggling dens in the outer rim, which would eventually lead them to small rebel bases, and you could have a dedicated imperial officer avidly and relentlessly pursuing contacts, but gets scolded by their superiors for being out of their assigned system, the knowledge eventually goes all the way up the chain to Darth Vader, who only needs to show up for one scene of absolute destruction to be a major focal point of the show.

A good analysis, but I do feel like you've missed a couple of important points:
    1) The Raider-I is a natural evolution of the doctrine that saw the creation of the Victory and Gladiator-Class Star Destroyers. Lira learned from her father, who designed both vessels. Both were created with battle against the CIS in mind. The CIS had large but relatively fragile vessels and preferred large, decisive engagements in their doctrine. This preference for pitched battles and cheaply made but impressive ships made the kind of big missile batteries you see on both vessels a considerable asset, because they can provide MASSIVE punch in a short period of time. However, in the Empire, both ships were found to be excessive and were re-tasked as long-range patrol vessels, more designed for counter-piracy operations than pitched battles. They saw their missile batteries stripped and replaced with ion cannons, and often had their electronics and engines overhauled.
    2) This makes PERFECT sense, especially given the Rebels operate much like pirates do. They do not seek to engage in pitched battles. They do not favour decisive engagements. In fact, they avoid them at all costs. Better for the Rebels to appear from nowhere, hit a vulnerable station or convoy, and then RUN LIKE HELL. A battle against the Rebels is likely to be a pursuit as they attempt to flee, a running engagement possibly hopping through several systems over an extended period of time. In that case, you want a fast, lean ship that isn't reliant on supply lines. Missiles are powerful, but limited by ammunition reserves. Furthermore, it was far more valuable to the Empire to take in Rebel or Pirate ships intact. A rapidly expanding debris cloud can't break under interrogation and tell you where their base is, or who their suppliers are.
    3) We know that the Raider-II did not carry any concussion missiles at all. In the Resurrection DLC for Battlefront II, Iden outright states "The Corvus never had any missiles!". We also have never seen any evidence that the Raider-I has a hangar bay. It is reasonable to assume that the hangar bay replaced the missile banks. Given the amount of space saved by removing missile launchers, ammunition magazines, loading mechanisms and all that, you've got a LOT of space left over. If you're switching to ion cannons in an effort to capture ships intact, why not have somewhere to store your booty whilst your techs rip the navicomp for clues about the HIDDEN REBEL BASE (tm)?
    4) Within a year of the Raider-I coming out, we start to see the Empire flirting with a 'quality over quantity' in terms of starfighter doctrine. Models like the TIE Advanced line start to be developed. We know that the Raider was associated with TIE Advanced x1 test flights (Fantasy Flight Games introduced exactly that as an intro scenario for the Raider Expansion for X-Wing). A Raider-Corvette and a pair of TIE/x1's make for a surprisingly robust patrol force that can handle just about any pirate force. Imagine pitting such a team against, say, the Cumulus-Class Corsair and its R-41 starchasers. It's no contest. In that context, it isn't a weakness at all. It's a natural evolution of the Raider's role in the Empire.
    5) Overall, I'd argue you have it backwards. The Raider-I was designed for direct conflict and it is GREAT in that role. In a decisive engagement, it can effectively blunt attacks from bombers or corvettes and cover the blind spots of their bigger brothers, all whilst being protected from the big guns of the enemy by the very ships they're escorting. Imagine a Raider-I in Rogue One. You wouldn't get the Y-Wing bombing run or the Hammerhead ram that really cost the Empire the battle. They'd fly into a wall of flak, and there wouldn't be enough left to effectively finish the strike.
Meanwhile the Raider-II is designed for the kind of operations where a fleet conflict is simply impractical. Pirates and early Rebels will have a converted civilian ship or outdated warship with a small fighter complement. The Raider is a potent deterrent to such raids - it's fast enough to respond before the enemy can retreat (or pursue them), it packs sustainable firepower, its own fighter escort and it has the means to TAKE THE ENEMY ALIVE. For something like Inferno Squad, it is the perfect vessel, and Inferno Squad, doctrinally, is a great response to the kind of guerrilla tactics the Rebel Alliance insists on.
IN SUMMARY: The Raider-Class Corvette and its variants are brilliant. Exceptional. In their ideal role, they're almost unbeatable. They are, however, the tragic victims of poor timing. The Raider-I was around in a time and fighting an enemy that the Raider-II would have been perfect for. By the time the Raider-II had come into full swing, the conflicts had reverted to the kind of big fights the Raider-I was designed specifically to handle.
The Raider-I is a great escort vessel that covers much of the Imperial Navy's weaknesses. It is the cure to Trench Run Disease.
The Raider-II is tailor-made to hunt pirates and insurgents. It has everything needed to hunt down, disarm and capture small raiding teams intact.

The change in the Corvis' hull and engine configuration could be explained by the necessity of upgrading the ships engines to a more efficient engine resulting in installing a typically "non-imperial" modification. Same is true for the addition of hull armor. A secondary benefit is making easier eyes on identification of the ship by friendly craft by the above mentioned non imperial modifications. In WW2 combat pilots trained using vessel silhouettes to identify targets in combat. Even in hi-tech combat, low tech techniques are useful.

That is a super sexy ship for sure. One thing that always kills me though is when anyone calls the wingaling things "Solar Panels". I mean, on the TIE, Twin Ion Engine fighter, that's where all the space magic thrust and maneuvering comes from. I can see how it could be something to make an Imperial Corvette way more maneuverable, with the ability to vector space magic thrust in all directions like that. It would also explain why the Alliance version needed a lot more engines in the back if they removed them to add the armor plates. But whatever they are, "Solar Panels" is not it.

If I were to make a Raider 3 corvette, I'd keep the New Republic engine layout, the solar panels, and add turbo lasers to the tips of each solar panel. Oh, and only have its hanger filled with TIE Advanded V1 Fighters. With some small fighter racks in the hanger, it could hold probably about 8 starfighters. Use the fighters and standard wepaons to take care of any starfighter escorts, the ion cannon to disable the shields, and the turbo lasers to take out the enemy capital ship

if youre looking for topics, the V-Wing is my favorite star wars ship ever and it goes almost entirely untalked about. I'd love to hear your discussion on it with informed details, whether or not it was a bad ship used in a good way or the right ship for the wrong faction or a super fighter far too expensive to lose/use. I'll always hold it in a special place in my heart for it's form factor alone. It looks fast and lethal. Small but in a way that says "I don't need to carry huge guns to kill you"
I've heard people describe it as analogous to the TIE due to the vertical "wings" and use by the empire but from the pointy nose, astromech, bulbous canopy, and twin big engines, I think it has a lot more looking like an A-Wing ancestor. Maybe it was a mix of rebel and empire and the V-Wing was the last common ground in their design philosophies, but that's just an outlandish theory to justify the idea.
Another idea, I'd love to see you create your own fighter or capital ship from scratch. Super out of format for you I know but I'd be 100% entertained to see you hand draw a design you would want to fly in if you were in universe
    Be well my man

The biggest problem the Empire had wasn't that they had huge capital ships that were vulnerable against small ships or fighters, it was that they didn't mix their fleets enough with all the varied escort ships they had access to. Star Wars is basically analogous to WW2 naval warfare, and just like WW2, you don't send battleships or carriers out without escorts unless you want them to get sunk. The Imp Navy had access to a lot of good escort designs it needed and the resources to utilize them, but didn't because of inept (Or sometimes idiotic) decision makers.
