    Every time I play Empire at War AOTR as the Imps, I have a rule that for every ISD I build, I build one Ton Falk and a Lancer, and that ISD goes nowhere without those two in tow. Works quite well, and I think it would have in lore as well.

    It may be an ugly brick of a ship but you can't argue with a wing of star fighters and full load of missiles. If this could be equipped with diamond boron missiles it would be a truly deadly threat to starfighters as those kind of missiles can make entire squadrons of fighters just disappear

    • @tkc1129
      @tkc1129 2 роки тому +38

      Well you have to differentiate game mechanics from lore. The diamond boron missiles from EaW seemed a little too game-y to me.

    • @idleishde6124
      @idleishde6124 2 роки тому +22

      @T KC couldn't agree more. If missiles were the superior weapon for combat why would anyone use lasers or smaller star fighters? Just get freighter or larger craft and field a fleet like a traditional Navy, using corvettes and destroyers as the smallest unit. Fighters and Bombers only make sense if you don't have massive cluster munitions that can make entire squadrons null and void in seconds. Even the Lancer had its limits since lasers had limited range and precision. A Lancer with mass missiles of that variety would render all fighters worthless.

      The problem was that Tarkin's plans appealed to the Emperor, and it didn't matter what anyone else said because it was an autocracy.
      But yes, the Tarkin Doctrine wrecked the Empire because it kept them focused on ships that would intimidate rather than ships that would get the job done efficiently.
      It stunted the first order too. Their answer to everything was still throwing capital ships at what were largely not capital ship problems.

    • @LTButtstrong
      @LTButtstrong Рік тому +14

      Tarkin was as much a political leader as a military one, so he was a "big picture" kinda general. His concern was suppressing an increasingly angry galactic populace as the empire steamrolled over system after system. A military solution for a political matter, his doctrine was very effective in its intended role. Inevitably though, wearing two hats meant he was no longer focused purely on military matters and this cost them in the long run.

      The issue with though is that the Venator doesn't have the armor or the shields to go toe to toe with a similar ship without its fighter escort. That's why the main battery is a set of extremely large and long range cannons. It can support the fighters with heavy artillery fire but it really does not have stuff for close in knife fighting.

    Video idea. One of my favorite things in Star Trek is the refits of ships to make them meet evolving situations. These refits can be smaller or quite extensive, sometimes so extensive it’s hard to call them refits cause the ship is so much larger and more advanced.
    With that in mind, a series on how you refit Star Wars ships from fighters to capital ships would be a fun series.

    The Escort Carrier's a wonderfully simple ship, its basically a hanger surrounded by crew quarters and other facilities, a few mess halls, a powerplant and some engines and then some armour plating and guns. As a ship, its probably like the WW2 escort carriers or CVE's to give them their official name, or Combustable, Vulnerable, Expendable as their crews referred to them. But if the Imperial Navy had a brain and paired like 1 of these and say 4 - 6 Lancers with every pair of ISD's, you'd have a very nasty combination. Wonderful video as always.

      WW2 carriers did not have to worry about the enormous power sources needed for weapons and shields. I know that carriers had massive citadel spaces for engines, fuel, etc, but the power for shields in star wars and durasteel armor is not comparable to the power that WW2 era ships would need for engines. Additionally, an ISD is closer to a battleship, meaning that even more of its space is dedicated to the massive engines and armor. It would be better to compare the ISD to the Ise class battlecarriers of the Japanese navy in WWII, not dedicated carriers like the Yorktown class. These, like the ISD, were battleships first with a small aircraft compliment. These ships could hardly hold 5 planes, and their numbers were thus low in fighter compliment just like an ISD because most of their space was dedicated to armor and weaponry. So, accounting for the size and energy demands of a star destroyer, 76 is a very good number.

    • @sleezesteve
      @sleezesteve 2 роки тому +3

      72 was the size of a Wing at least in the old rpg. A star destroyer was also supposed to have the same number. As a kid I was fascinated reading those rule/lore books. I imagined it as the standard imperial docking bay with a box around it.

    • @fightingdreamer123

    i always thought it was odd that the empire didnt have more simple pure carriers similar to our own naval carriers. i mean if you didnt use your main heavy weapon in heavy star destroyers as your only source of carriers in most battle engagements you could place your starfighters at far more strategic positions in the battle. not to mention, in the novels, how many times do we see the empire release their fighters from their star destroyers, since they dont have hypdrives either, and it takes them 5 to 8 minutes for the ties to get to the rebels from the destroyers. you could also free space up on the destroyer if they werent the only source of starfighter in the battle group. i loved this video eck. these are the kinds of videos that make me like your channel because youre looking at the strategic purpose of specific ships rather than just simply how cool they look or how much damage they can do.

    The Ton Falk carrier would still be very useful to the rebels, even with hyperdrive equipped starfighters.
    Hyperspace travel time does not come up much in canon, but if you have to sit in a fighter for 10 hours until you get to the fight) you’re not going to be at your best when you get there. Ton Falk’s could ferry fighters up to a short jump or two away from the target, launch fighters, then move to rendezvous location another short jump or two away.
    This way your pilots would be fresh and ready for action. Depending on the amenities of the Ton Falk.
    So maybe the Rebels used Ton Falks a lot, but you never see them in the front lines.
    Though admittedly, the rebels had a tendency to go “all in” and throw everything with a mounted gun into a battle.

    The Ton Falk has that uniquely-powerful computer for replacing a busted nav computer on a PC's ship - making it such a good target to craftily sneak onto, loot, set the timers on the detonators, and flee from. It was a good target for the Rebellion in roleplay games, because the Empire just didn't value it properly - it wasn't guarded like it should have been, and there just weren't enough of them, so launching a mission to slag the escort carrier in a support location before the main attack went down would take all those 72 fighters out of that important fight (or at least not leave them in a position to respond in strength.)
    So nice to see it here.

      And move all ground stuff (troops and vehicles) to Acclamators.

    • @solarissv777
      @solarissv777 Рік тому +2

      @@Arthur_Revan Acclamators can also be used as carriers, they could theoretically carry ~190 TIE fighters only on it's LAAT racks. But the main advantage of the Acclamator is its hyperdive (class 0.6), it's one of the fastest ships period. This means that one Acclamator can cower lots of space and be at moments notice, it would arrive muuch faster then the ISD, and if you're not fighting capital ships why pay more?
      Thus, I believe, Acclamators would be best ships for police and peacekeeping duties (that empire actually requires). And if it faces something too powerful (even accounting for it's huge fighter complement), it could call ISD for reinforcement.

    I love these things in Star Wars: Rebelion (PC 1998) they let you move a decent amount of firepower for relatively little cost. But they are vulnerable as heck as the rebel fighters can close the distance from the planet to space or from fleet to fleet before all the Ties launch due to the single hangar bay since the rebel fighters come in under their own power and are already battle ready on arrival (as if not having shields wasn't enough of a disadvantage for the ties). Still, with ISDs carrying half as many fighters and the Victory Class Star Destroyers carrying a single squadron, they are invaluable through the entire campaign, unlike nearly every other ship class from the start of the game. In the endgame you can load them up with Tie Defender squadrons, or a mix of Defenders and bombers thus eliminating their biggest shortcoming and making them a very powerful asset to the fleet indeed.

    After a quick check, the typical compliment of TIE line starfighters on an ISD from Imperial I class through to the Interdictor class is 72 and the Ton Falk carries 72 TIE line starfighters so it seems to me that their main purpose was probably relegated to that of logistics rather than combat and would make runs from say a planetary based Sector repair station and ISDs to replace down TIEs with operational ones. We see Rebels working on their starfighters like on Hoth and on Yavin, we saw Clones working on fighters on the Republic Venators in the Clone Wars movies and animated series but I can't recall ever seeing imperials working on TIEs, even Maintenance, in any movies or the Rebels animated series which leads me to believe the Ton Falk acted more like a ferry to ferry new TIEs to ISDs and take old, worn out and damaged TIEs to a base to be repaired, fixed up and brought back to specs or scrapped.
