I just came from Act two in Labrynth zone. I was losing my patience when I jumped and hit a ceiling spike then fell onto another spike and died. I immediately reset the console, level selected Starlight zone, and typed into youtube "worst sonic stages". So I can hear people talk about how bad this is. It's so bad that I am surprised sonic actually became as popular as it did. Even back then Sonic Team had a cancer in their midst who either had no clue what they were doing or are intentionally sabotaging lol
My ranking: 7:Labyrinth zone 6:Scrap Brain Zone 5:Final Zone 4:Marble Zone 3:Spring Yard Zone 2:Green Hill Zone 1:Star Light Zone This is just my opinion.
On the 3:15 mark-- I suffered that on Marble Zone Act 3 twice, with the deep-penetrating spike traps. Basically, if you get caught under one of those without a shield, when that thing comes down on you, it not only takes your rings, but kills you at the same time (the spikes quite literally drive the point home, like they did here). Fortunately, there is an exception to that pain-- if you have a shield on, or have no rings at all, all you see is your death throw sprite. That said, because I suffered that before, it makes me very hesitant to attempt the shortcut on Marble 3-- it'll cost me a time bonus for sure, but it's far better just to play it safe and get through in one piece, than suffer the humiliation that Marble 3's spike traps and this level's slotting spikes can deal out.
one time in labyrinth zone i was about to jump and hit an enemy, but then a water bubble came up from below and the water bubble consuming animation cancelled out my jump animation then it made me get hit by the enemy then i died
Spring Yard is my favorite zone. I love the purple sky and dark city background and music. Not sure what my least favorite zone is. Every zone in Sonic 1 feels unique.
Sonic 1 in general is kinda meh if you compare it to Sonic 2 in terms of level design: there's just way too much slow sections where you're discouraged to go fast due to the awkward placement of obstacles and enemies. Chemical Plant zone from Sonic 2 alone is better than any zone in Sonic 1 in terms of design and overall walkthrough dynamics. The only thing I like about Sonic 1 is the atmosphere in some of the zones (especially Marble, Spring Yard, Star Light)
I'd switch marble and scrap brain because scrap brain zone has more area's to build on speed that marble zone I ranking by level chunk scrap brain only has two real levels and labyrinth has four.
I feel soolrry for scrap brain for ranking below marble , if you see me playing sonic 1 you'll find that I play scrap brain more than any other level not act3 you know already what my favorite stage is.

The only things I would switch is scrap brain and marble. Because marble has very many places where you just have to wait but scrap brain there are a lot of places to go fast. And also there’s the constant changes of theme and obstacles and whatnot. Even though scrap brain 3 is dreadful, if you go under the platform at the beginning it brings you to a much shorter route that makes it barley a problem.

It was called labyrinth zone act 4 in the code I believe. Similar thing in Ocarina of Time, Bottom of the Well in code is just the Shadow Temple. I really like Labyrinth zone though. My least favorite is Marble. Labyrinth just has a nice vibe to it to me, the look of the stage, the music, it's nice.
Green hill shows up in too many games but even green hill is fundamentally worse than star light due to it being the 1st level and because of a few brutal traps at the very beginning and in the lower sections of act 3,a marble is even worse, spring yard is mediocreand labyrinth is the worst.
For me 6- Scrap Brain (I haven’t played it as I haven’t gone that far in the game) 5- Marble Zone (it’s just boring and it’s hard to get 50 rings and it took me like 4 years to complete it) 4- Labyrinth (it’s not that bad honestly at first I thought this would be a lot harder tho the boss fight is hard) 3- Star Light (I know it’s everyone’s favorite or second favorite zone but it’s overrated imo it’s better than labyrinth zone cause it’s not under water the enemies are annoying in a good way if that makes sense tho I was kinda confused on what to do at first. The background is really good too I’m a fan of nighttime backgrounds and this is no exception) 2. Spring Yard (definitely a good stage it’s pretty fun to to hit those bumpers and land on springs the only thing I don’t like is the hazards and enemy placements) 1. Spike "glitch" is not a glitch. Its a special block of code made specifically to do that. They started calling it a glitch when people complained and they had to release a revised edition.
I played that game on dads phone and played it and somehow all emeralds, I became a pro at 5 years and I get 150 rings and I didn't die on every level because I was careful

nice, the old Sonic engine has the well known spike glitch and if you press left or right, Sonic moves at a set speed, only the d-pad can kill speed, just a heads up
Labyrinth act 4 has stopped scrap brain from being the best zone ever, no wonder people mistakenly rank I so low but even act 3 is cool but as much as I like act 3, I want a scrap brain level and scrap brain zone is pretty underwhelming I can Finish each act in under a minute, scrap brain taking 2 40 in total vs star light taking 2 55 in total we need a bigger scrap brain
Cool list. My favorite sonic one zone is an unpopular opinion- Marble Zone. Idk what it is but I LOVE IT. It has a decent amount of sections that give you at least some speed. It does make you wait for some stuff but Idc bec it also has one of my favorite songs in the whole series so I’m happy waiting. I also just love how this zone looks! I honestly would really like to see a 3d version of this zone!! Also this was the zone that I could NEVER pass as a kid so I have a lot of nostalgia for it, I played it for more time than Green Hill just bec I couldn’t get past it. I feel that it’s a very underrated zone, and deserves at least a little more love.

I find labyrinth.... Fun?? I've played the insufferable castle levels from Mario so you could understand, also... There is an extra life if you take the top route in act 3
I love sonic the hedgehog's music the only thing good about scrap brain and labyrinth are the music and also in act 3 of scrap brain if you run faster than the moving platform you can complete the stage in less than 50sec and yes this comment is like a document.
Scrap brain zone also has the spinning wheels etc which place it over marble, scrap brain and spring yard ate similar in speed but scrap brain is a funner experience .I've ommied sbz 3 because that is just labyrinth act 4 sbz 3 is actually final zone.

I'd say it's #2. It's not that bad, and in fact holds fun secrets! And hey, water isn't that bad. Once you beat it over and over it's really fun! My list from worst to best is: Scrap Brain: Difficulty Marble: Waiting, Challenge, Boring after awhile. Star Light: Speed will kill you in many areas if you take the bottom route. After reaching the bottom route, you're screwed. Still fun. Green Hill: Boring after awhile, with no challenge. You must be a 5 year old to fail. Labyrinth: It's alright! I mentioned why it's #2. Spring Yard: Speed, and although the blocks, it's mostly speed! And hey, bouncing around is fun!

well all hate the labyrinth zone act 3 bc the boss as water and traps me:beated it at the 1st try
Labyrinth is the best Sonic 1 zone and deserves number 1. No I am not kidding.
I'd say it's #2. It's not that bad, and in fact holds fun secrets! And hey, water isn't that bad. Once you beat it over and over it's really fun! My list from worst to best is:
Scrap Brain: Difficulty
Marble: Waiting, Challenge, Boring after awhile.
Star Light: Speed will kill you in many areas if you take the bottom route. After reaching the bottom route, you're screwed. Still fun.
Green Hill: Boring after awhile, with no challenge. You must be a 5 year old to fail.
Labyrinth: It's alright! I mentioned why it's #2.
Spring Yard: Speed, and although the blocks, it's mostly speed! And hey, bouncing around is fun!
I like the music a lot for Labyrinth zone
With tales thos game is easy and i used him in sonic origins

MARBLE IS THE WORST ZONE EVER IN SONIC 1 i mean i dont get why people hate labyrinth when marble created the Lost annoying badnik which IS the Caterpillar badnik
