Casino night zone (sonic 2) is quite fun to play even though it doesn't offer any serious challenge - one enemy badnik that can only be found at a few locations.
It's breathtaking when you take stock of how much classic sonic there is to enjoy. A very well made video, and whilst I disagree with some of your opinions (the sonic CD levels in mania were my least favourite) I respect what you've done, and there's clearly a lot of enjoyment gone into the making of this video. I enjoyed this video, thank you. Here's a hypothetical for you: what would you like to see in sonic mania 2, if such a game was ever developed?
Metallic Madness, ay? I love CD's levels too, especially the Mania remakes! Tho, do Chaotix levels count? It is on the same console as most of the games.
@@ruccsacc knuckles chaotix technically counts tough sonic hasnt been the star in the game but he dose know team chaotix at the end and it origanally was sonic crackers but was turned into knuckles chaotix and the sonic and tails sprites were reused like mighty is just sonic and tails is blegh or the silver knuckle so technically yes it counts
Very well made list ive been watching your lists lately and while I dont agree with all of them. I still apreciatte the effort and the nice pace of your videos. I hope you start growing rapidly soon. But for now youve earned a new subscriber.
I feel like my most favorite one in the classics is Casino Night zone, cause i love making a save state there in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game in a seperate file so i can play with the slots until the level timer runs out. Press Garden and Studiopolis tie with Casino Night zone. I honestly switch between the three depending on my mood.
Scrap brain zone is better because the music is great, level design for act 1 and 2 are epic, metalic madness is a more frustrating version of scrap brain.
@@RedX8477 Scrap Brain and Metropolis have the best music, Metallic Madness is cool but a bit edgy and intimidating with the rapping. Launch base is joint 1st place with scrap brain for music and level design for acts 1 and 2.
@@MarkAnthony-fn1zu Yeah, I know. I was referring to the good future metallic madness, and acts 1 and 2.. I agree, the metallic madness bad future’s music is pretty edgy and just doesn’t match the background.
1:23 "the only major thing that this rules excludes is Angel Island Zone from Sonic Mania Plus since that's exclusive to the game's uncle mode" Swear I couldn't stop laughing before realizing what he really said
Great rundown! Constructive criticism: I found the transition from zone to zone jarring because there wasn't really any audio or visual cues. Like, maybe you could have consistently started by saying, "Number 53: Labyrinth zone. Yada yada... yada. Number 52: Death Egg Zone. Yaya yada..."
number 45...took 2 tries (1 as tails which failed and one as sonic which succeeded)..gotta admit, baiting the bomb to eggman wasn't the funnest thing in the world, but I think the boss was better than the zone that you get into hidden palace zone for...then again...I hate drilling bosses
U noticed to and dont forget that in generations they showed up for his birthday but some argue that classic sonic dosent know the chaotix well they meet at the end of knux chaotix
I think this turned out to be a pretty well-thought out list. My biggest gripe would be that while the level design for CD Metallic Madness was flawed and even frustrating in places it's the only instance for me where I prefer the original soundtrack to the Mania remixes. I guess I just enjoy Metallic Madness bad future Jp/Eur too much for the jazzy Mania remake to gain much traction for me.
I can't be the only person who adores Oil Ocean, thinks Studiopolis is the least amazing of the new stages in Mania (while still amazing), Metallic Madness is generic, and that Titanic Monarch is like one of the very best ever. I'm still glad you gave all of the new Mania zones the recognition they deserve. The point is, my opinions are messed up.
Too tough to call on this. Sonic 1: Green Hill Zone Sonic 2: Mystic Cave Sonic 3: torn between Marble Garden / Ice Cap &Knuckles: Sandopolis / Lava Reef CD: Stardust Speedway Mania: Mirage Saloon Love these games.
While I can agree to some of what you said and it is understandable why its so high up on the list, I will say this about Labyrinth Zone. To a new or casual player, Labyrinth Zone is indeed a tough one to get through as it is really really slow paced and gets even slower when underwater. plus enemys and obstacles in blind spots just waiting to jump out at you and kill you or in the worst places at the worst times. But to someonw who has played these games to Death. It gets really really fun to blast through because I know everything the zone has to offer or hide and know the best route to complete it faster. Hell I'm at the point where I can finish the boss race without a single hit now. I like this zone to some extent but I don't love it as much as the rest on this list
My Ranking of the all of the classic sonic game levels that I've beaten ( MY OPINION SO DON'T ATTACK ME ): Sonic 1 7: Scrap Brain 6: Labyrinth 5: Marble 4: Final Zone 3: Spring Yard 2: Green Hill 1: Star Light Sonic 2 12: Metropolis 11: Aquatic Ruin 10: Hill Top 9: Sky Case 8: Mystic Cave 7: Wing Fortress 6: Death Egg 5: Hidden Palace 4: Oil Ocean 3: Chemical Plant 2: Emerald Hill 1: Casino Night Sonic CD 7: Wacky Workbench 6: Collision Chaos 5: Tidal Temtest 4: Metallic Madness 3: Palmtree Panic 2: Stardust Speedway 1: Quartz Quadrant Sonic 3 14: Sandopollis 13: Doomsday 12: Flying Battery 11:Hidden Palace 10: Lava Reef 9: Lunch Base 8: Death Egg 7: Marble Garden 6: Angle Island 5: Sky Sanctuary 4: Ice Cap 3: Mushroom Hill 2: Hydrocity 1: Carnival Night Top 5: 5: Emerald Hill 4: Mushroom Hill 3: Casino Night 2: Hydrocity 1: Carnival Night Bottom 5: 5:Wacky Workbench 4: Metropolis 3: Scrap Brain 2: Sandopollis 1: Doomsday Sonic 3>Sonic CD>Sonic 2>Sonic 1
There is actually a glitch in Scrap Brain Zone Act 3 which cuts out the entire stage. Activate the platform and push against the wall Then push the wall where the platform was so Sonic moves in Then hold left to go in the wall Head right, jump and hold left Jump on the springs and stage done
I wish scrap brain act 2 was longer and act 3 was industrial and not a water levell because act 3 seriously embarrasses the epic industrial level design of scrap brain zone scrap brain zone would be number one if act 3 was industrial and not another labyrinth zone.
I mean, if you're playing Sonic 3 A.I.R with the Metal Knuckles mod Knux's Hidden Palace is at least more than the original, even though it is almost a clone of Sonic's but you come in Knuckles' way and the same bossfight but with new AI and Metal Knux.
4:00 theres actually A VERY short shortcut at the start, when you stwr to go down underwater, just take a straight, you can literally find springe there. Aint cappin people
Yeah, that confuses me... I can see why you'd enjoy Marble zone if you prefer the challenge in Sonic to the feel, but he put Labyrinth Zone at the bottom, a zone that you'd probably enjoy if you enjoyed Marble Zone. I like Marble Zone but I think it's badly designed; well as a stand-alone zone, but as a second zone it really fails to do its job. Instead of teaching you in a safe environment in a fun manner that speed is a reward and that using it at the wrong time can have consequences, they throw you into the deep end. After leaving a zone taht constantly gave and rewarded speed you're thrown into a slow zone that kills you quickly for doing exactly what Green Hill Zone taught you to do. In fact, for this reason I find Labyrinth Zone to be well designed, except the boss. It really makes you feel like you're at the last stretch, mistakes will be punished now, and you must be aware and careful at all times. Sonic 1 would be massively improved if they simply re-arranged the zones to go: 1. Green Hill Zone 2. Spring Yard Zone 3. Starlight Zone (For the most part pretty easy, bottomless pits will tell the player they can't mess up anymore) 4. Marble Zone (At this point, the importance of patience and carefulness has been established) 5. Labyrinth Zone (At this point, you've practiced being careful, preparing you for this zone) 6. Scrap brain Zone 7. Final Zone
Gonna rank them based on what I have actually played because there are some zones I suck too much to beat. Also I've never played Mania. Most of these are based on the level of difficulty I had with them, but there's a few based on how much fun they are. Don't get me started on the music for the top two. 23. Chemical Plant (2) 22. Carnival Night (3+K) 21. Aquatic Ruin (2) 20. Casino Night (2) 19. Ice Cap (3+K) 18. Palmtree Panic (CD) 17. Mushroom Hill (3+K) 16. Labyrinth Zone (1) 15. Star Light (1) 14. Wacky Workbench (CD) 13. Hydrocity (3+K) 3. Stardust Speedway (CD) 2. Sandopolis (3+K) 1. Flying Battery (3+K) Note that I likely forgot some zones. You may as well place them at the bottom - other than Chemical Plant, with is just pure rage, pretty much anything below Labyrinth is ranked low because they're rather forgettable for me. I've never beaten Star Light, Casino Night, Ice Cap, Lava Reef or Stardust Speedway. The latter three were due to the bosses.
TheUtubePower 12 How is it overrated? Literally nobody talks about it expect to talk about the last part of act 2. The zone is amazing besides the boring platforming at the end
Sonic mania oil ocean in my opinion was pretty cool, and it was so satisfying with the fire sheild but that doesn't mean that my opinion is better than yours

51) Sky Canyon Zone
Easy to die falling off a ledge in this Sonic Advance zone
52) Labyrinth zone Everyone knows why this zone is this low
53) Death Egg zone (Sonic 2) Two bosses, no rings, try to survive!
54) Hidden Palace (S and K) A extended cut scene not really a "zone"
55) Marble Zone A bit boring but not the worst zone
56) Ice Paradise Zone
Lags far behind the other ice zones, but the boss is a different story
57) Gene Gadget Zone Not a zone anyone really remembers
58) Green Grove Zone
Lackluster start to Sonic 3D Blast
59) Spring Stadium Zone The worst zone with those annoying slotting spikes
Okay random note but I love how synced Sonic is with the music here 7:27
I like Scrap Brain Zone for it’s mechanical danger appearance. It gives off a sci-fi horror vibe.
Finally someone has respect for scrap brain
1:49 I always love when people will actually count/show everything they're about to rank
Wow! I just searched classic sonic zones and found a video that's less than a day old!
And now its somehow 3 years old
"We have to go quickly"
Casino night zone (sonic 2) is quite fun to play even though it doesn't offer any serious challenge - one enemy badnik that can only be found at a few locations.
I really do not agree with this list very much but I like the effort you put in into actually ranking ALL of the zones.
Rewatching this 2 years later and I still enjoy it.
This is a good video, but I can never get over how low you put Ice Cap, that zone deserves to at least be in the 10s.
Ice cap is actually one of my least favourite zones in the game, the worst ones being lava reef and sandopolis
@@cakelayer hmm why is that exactly?
It's breathtaking when you take stock of how much classic sonic there is to enjoy. A very well made video, and whilst I disagree with some of your opinions (the sonic CD levels in mania were my least favourite) I respect what you've done, and there's clearly a lot of enjoyment gone into the making of this video. I enjoyed this video, thank you.
Here's a hypothetical for you: what would you like to see in sonic mania 2, if such a game was ever developed?
The one I disagree with is labyrinth zone at the bottom, it should be wacky workbench then labyrinth
Carnival Night and Death Egg are my two favorite zones, period
Metallic Madness, ay? I love CD's levels too, especially the Mania remakes! Tho, do Chaotix levels count? It is on the same console as most of the games.
DaBluePittoo no it’s on the sets 32x addon
Edit: but sonic CD is also on and its on a addon
Edit2 no wait he said 16bit but the 32x is 32 bit sry
@@ruccsacc knuckles chaotix technically counts tough sonic hasnt been the star in the game but he dose know team chaotix at the end and it origanally was sonic crackers but was turned into knuckles chaotix and the sonic and tails sprites were reused like mighty is just sonic and tails is blegh or the silver knuckle so technically yes it counts

I love the mania version of that zone
Very well made list ive been watching your lists lately and while I dont agree with all of them. I still apreciatte the effort and the nice pace of your videos. I hope you start growing rapidly soon. But for now youve earned a new subscriber.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the videos! I'm sure it's going to be impossible for anyone to agree with every entry of any of my lists haha.
2:07 “Like my boy Sonic always says…”
*“We have to go quickly.”*
Agreed with the number 1 pick. It so weird because I despised Metallic Madness from CD, but in Mania it suddenly became a favourite
I didn't like zone 3 of cd but the previous 2 were actually pretty good but that's just my opinion.
Couldn't agree more with the Mania Metallic Madness Zone ranking #1 (especially Act 2).
My List 53)Labyrinth Zone, 52)Wing Fortress Zone (A Long Brutal Level of platforming which isn't fair), 51)Scrap Brain Zone, 50)Aquatic Ruin, 49)Oil Ocean Mania, 48)Hidden Palace 3K, 47)Metropolis Zone, 46)Death Egg Sonic 2, 45)Spring Yard, 44)Oil Ocean Sonic 2, 43)Marble, 42)Sky Chase, 41)Carnival Night, 40)Mystic Cave, 39)Metallic Madness CD, 38)Marble Garden, 37)Flying Battery 3K, 36)Hydrocity 3K, 35)Hidden Palace Sonic 2, 34)Green Hill Sonic 1, 33)Casino Night, 32)Stardust Speedway Mania, 31)Metallic Madness Mania, 30)Launch Base, 29)Final Zone Sonic 1, 28)Chemical Plant Sonic 2, 27)Hydrocity Mania, 26)Collision Chaos, 25)Death Egg 3K, 24)Palmtree Panic, 23)Green Hill Mania, 22)Studiopolis, 21)Ice Cap, 20)Sandopolis, 19)StarLight, 18)Tidal Tempest, 17)Lava Reef 3K, 16)Mushroom Hill, 15)Angel Island, 14)HillTop Zone, 13)Flying Battery Mania, 12)Egg Reverie, 11)Titanic Monarch, 10)Doomsday Zone, 9)Quartz Quadrant, 8)Wacky Workbench, 7)Emerald Hill, 6)Mirage Saloon, 5)Lava Reef Mania, 4)Chemical Plant Mania, 3)Press Garden, 2)Sky Sanctuary, 1)Stardust Speedway CD
Did he ever make a list for the Gamegear Games?
wacky workbench is not better than Palmtree panic, thats not an opinon, that is a fact
@@steindzenk-oh2223 no it isn't it has the objectively worst level design of any zone in the classic games
The music in the American mix dont even say that about wacky work bench
I think we can all agree that hydrocity is amazing
6:40 "Sonic CD doesn't really have any bad zones, per se..."
Wacky Workbench...
Wacky Workbench...
WACKY WORKBENCH
Eh its alright, still the worst sonic CD zone
Listen to the American mix for w w and dont talk smac about though the level desighn is not the best
2:16 - Labyrinth Zone
NEVER BE SUPER SONIC IN SKY CHASE ZONE
I kno rite
Why?
Metallic Madness is the arguably the best zone because of the music alone
Scrap brain zone is better because the music is great, level design for act 1 and 2 are epic, metalic madness is a more frustrating version of scrap brain.
Metallic Madness act 1's music is good, its like exciting, dance along, happy, and it has a good message
Metalic madness is scrap brain but worse but the music and art are pretty bang on. Metalic madness is basically a green version of scrap brain.
@@MarkAnthony-fn1zu They make the hardest levels have the best music.

10. Star Light
9. Tidal Tempest
8. Ice cap
7. Mirage Saloon
6. Lava reef
5. Spring yard
4. Wing Fortress
3. Stardust speedway (CD)

You ranked Sandopolis higher than Ice cap zone wtf
Gotta go fast!
No, no, it's "We Have to Go Quickly!"
We must move hastily
ah yes, sonics famous quote “we’ve got to go quickly”
I can't believe Wacky Workbench was that freaking high lol.
1:23 "the only major thing that this rules excludes is Angel Island Zone from Sonic Mania Plus since that's exclusive to the game's uncle mode"
Swear I couldn't stop laughing before realizing what he really said
17:30 Has anyone ever noticed that Press Garden Zone is like a combination of Launch Base Zone and Ice Cap Zone?
Long live Green Hill Zone!!!
"We have to go quickly!"
- Sonic The Hedgehog
Great rundown! Constructive criticism: I found the transition from zone to zone jarring because there wasn't really any audio or visual cues. Like, maybe you could have consistently started by saying, "Number 53: Labyrinth zone. Yada yada... yada. Number 52: Death Egg Zone. Yaya yada..."
Are you ever going to do a video like this on Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic Chaos, and Sonic Triple Trouble for GameGear?
I don't agree with flying battery zone In both games but I definatly agree with Metallic Madness Mania.
death egg zone pissed me off for a while....so yeah,I can understand the low ranking..
I really dig this series. Keep up the good work! Subscribed!
Thanks for the kind words and sub. I appreciate it :D.
jamiethepayne as a fellow struggling smalltime creator I know the importance of positive reinforcement! I'll be looking forward to more!
This feels like something that NB should’ve made already
ngl, when you started the list and I heard the mystic cave zone music I was about to throw hands before I realized mystic cave wasn't at the bottom
Stardust Speedway Zone (Act 1) in Sonic Mania is just Marble Garden Zone but done right,
All this rage at his opinions, and I'm just here jamming to the music and thinking how oil ocean rocks with the fire shield
number 45...took 2 tries (1 as tails which failed and one as sonic which succeeded)..gotta admit, baiting the bomb to eggman wasn't the funnest thing in the world, but I think the boss was better than the zone that you get into hidden palace zone for...then again...I hate drilling bosses
I think knuckles chaotix is cannon because of heroes and onward so in my opinion I think you should have added it
U noticed to and dont forget that in generations they showed up for his birthday but some argue that classic sonic dosent know the chaotix well they meet at the end of knux chaotix
KNUCKLES CHAOTIX ISNT A SONIC GAME
#53 oil ocean
Please
I hated it in Sonic 2, but Sonic Mania made it fun and I got to burn it down.
53 was labyrinth
Hill top zone was emerald hill zone in the past, except that time travel was delayed until sonic CD.
My favorite might be Titanic Monarch zone Mania as it has an outstanding atmosphere and has amazing level design
I think this turned out to be a pretty well-thought out list. My biggest gripe would be that while the level design for CD Metallic Madness was flawed and even frustrating in places it's the only instance for me where I prefer the original soundtrack to the Mania remixes. I guess I just enjoy Metallic Madness bad future Jp/Eur too much for the jazzy Mania remake to gain much traction for me.
chemical plant that high up is outrageous
I can't be the only person who adores Oil Ocean, thinks Studiopolis is the least amazing of the new stages in Mania (while still amazing), Metallic Madness is generic, and that Titanic Monarch is like one of the very best ever.
I'm still glad you gave all of the new Mania zones the recognition they deserve.
The point is, my opinions are messed up.
I'm sure opinions'll be wild for which kind of Sonic levels people prefer.
jamiethepayne That's true. There is so many after all.
I agree with all of those, plus the fact that I LOVE Labyrinth Zone.
I love mushroom hill zone such a fun and adorable stage
The long lost charecters names are fang bark and bean
Too tough to call on this.
Sonic 1: Green Hill Zone
Sonic 2: Mystic Cave
Sonic 3: torn between Marble Garden / Ice Cap
&Knuckles: Sandopolis / Lava Reef
CD: Stardust Speedway
Mania: Mirage Saloon
Love these games.
Marble garden is worse than marble zone.
That was the coolest intro i ever seen
4:42 "you die when you spindash" WHAT YOU THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN GOING FULL SPEED ON A PLANE?
Wait, what about the Zones from Sonic Spinball, Knuckles’ Chaotix and Sonic 3D: Flickies’ Island?
Dang you noticed to
Aren’t cannon to the classic series but whatever you say
@@guccidane uh, sonic 3d blast counts

Sonic 3>Sonic CD>Sonic 2>Sonic 1
Everyone think Wacky workbench is the best
Plot twist : They KNEW that Labyrinth zone was the WORST zone in sonic 1 so they decided to bring it back in scrap brain
There is actually a glitch in Scrap Brain Zone Act 3 which cuts out the entire stage.
Activate the platform and push against the wall
Then push the wall where the platform was so Sonic moves in
Then hold left to go in the wall
Head right, jump and hold left
Jump on the springs and stage done
I wish scrap brain act 2 was longer and act 3 was industrial and not a water levell because act 3 seriously embarrasses the epic industrial level design of scrap brain zone scrap brain zone would be number one if act 3 was industrial and not another labyrinth zone.
Maybe Hill Top Zone looks like what Banjo-Kazooie would look like in 2D lmao
ANOTHER SUPERB LIST!!!
Ever thought about ranking all console Megaman game robot-master levels, not including the fortress ones?!?!?
I mean, if you're playing Sonic 3 A.I.R with the Metal Knuckles mod Knux's Hidden Palace is at least more than the original, even though it is almost a clone of Sonic's but you come in Knuckles' way and the same bossfight but with new AI and Metal Knux.
5:31 *sonic just casually kiling tails*
16:14 Yo whats that soundtrack its a jammer, pls I need the name, i have heard it so much but i don’t know the name
Quartz Quadrant present from Sonic CD
4:00 theres actually A VERY short shortcut at the start, when you stwr to go down underwater, just take a straight, you can literally find springe there. Aint cappin people
Fun fact scrap brain zone 3 is lost Labyrinth its Labyrinth zone but hray and purple water its a remix with Labyrinth zone
Hidden Palace was also from Sonic 2 beta.
the top 2 zones were actually the ones i was thinking of too lol
Marble Zone is way too high on the list.
WAYYYYY too high
Sonic 1 would be massively improved if they simply re-arranged the zones to go:
1. Green Hill Zone
2. Spring Yard Zone
3. Starlight Zone (For the most part pretty easy, bottomless pits will tell the player they can't mess up anymore)
4. Marble Zone (At this point, the importance of patience and carefulness has been established)
5. Labyrinth Zone (At this point, you've practiced being careful, preparing you for this zone)
6. Scrap brain Zone
7. Final Zone
Gonna rank them based on what I have actually played because there are some zones I suck too much to beat. Also I've never played Mania. Most of these are based on the level of difficulty I had with them, but there's a few based on how much fun they are. Don't get me started on the music for the top two.
23. Chemical Plant (2)
22. Carnival Night (3+K)
21. Aquatic Ruin (2)
20. Casino Night (2)
19. Ice Cap (3+K)

5. Spring Yard (1)
4. Hydrocity (3+K)
3. Stardust Speedway (CD)
2. Sandopolis (3+K)
1. Flying Battery (3+K)
Note that I likely forgot some zones.
Your list is good but man do I hate Flying Battery.
Chemical plant at last? Finally someone who hates that overrated zone
Honestly, I agree. The fire shield interactions were really fun and the submarine gimmick was soooo good.
it is required that we travel with haste
I haven’t played mania yet. I just beat CD. I’m replaying SN3K now.
It's been 3 years since you said you would rank the gg/ms zones and I'm still waiting for your opinion on mecha green hill
