  • Replacing ball joints on 1994 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 with Dana 60 front axle and all the goodness that comes with a project like this on a 27 year old truck. Besides replacing ball joints we descale the rust, treat and paint, replace a faulty wheel bearing and upgrade to a coated rotor. Axle shaft and u-joint are inspected along with inner axle seal.

    Tip for removing the wheel bearing and rotor, leave the steering hooked up back the 4 mounting bolts out a few turns and then leave a deep socket and extension on the bolt turn your steering wheels until it bottoms out. Go around all 4 bolts, basically works like a hydraulic press to push it all out. Then finish removing bolts and slide out.

    Thanks so much for this. So hard to find clips that deal with a '99. You save my bacon!
    Finally had to use a press to knock out the original bjoint.

    Finally someone who lubes press bolt threads! Most people use them dry and bitch when threads on jack screw strip off!

    I'm curious about the camber adjustment for the upper ball joint....was there any adjustment?

      @factotumlife  2 роки тому +1

      No adjustment, but I believe you can buy upper off set bushings to change degree.

    Not sure if you’re still active but was curious to what exactly you were pressing in on the hand pump press? I need to do ball joints and was gonna replace my rotors as well but not sure I’d have access to a press…

      I was using the basic OTC Ball Joint press kit. The shiny metal piece I was using was an old wheel bearing out of a a Honda. If you are going to buy a Ball Joint Press kit buy one with more than two adapters as it will save you the hassle of trying to find work arounds.

      @@factotumlife thank you for that info on the press and how to not run into issues! I should have been more specific, I was more questioning what you were pressing in with the orange like 60,000 lb jack press! With the rotor and wheel hub under it.

    Good video except you cut the clip of how to tighten the nut on the ball joint without them turning.

    I’m curious about the axle and getting back on the sleeve. Once you removed vacuum motor are you able to just slide it back in?
    Having trouble with mine looking for a little more info if possible!

    • @factotumlife
      @factotumlife  2 роки тому +3

      Yes, remove the vacuum actuator and cover and you will find the sleeve has dropped preventing full seating of outer axle. You will be able to move sleeve to inner tube axle thus allowing you to properly seat the outer axle. After outer axle is installed the sleeve can be adjusted to the natural position of the actuator motor.

      Ok . Does the collar need to be in the 2wd drive position to slide axle in?
      My axle goes in just doesn’t seat all the way against the differential leading me to believe it isnt all the way in.
      Thanks for the info too. Followed this video to do my ballpoints, front U joints and paint the front end up a bit

      Glad the video was of assistance - thank you for watching. Is your problem with the inner axle or the outer (passenger axle)
      At the 24 minute mark of the video you can see the sleeve is down and I am trying to move it back onto the inner axle(drivers side). You probably could do the reverse and try to install sleeve on the outer axle (passenger) and slide in that way too. If you can move the sleeve between the two axles, effectively coupling the axles, than your probably ok. The outer axle shaft (passenger) can be pushed towards the differential/inner axle to the point of contact with the outer axle tube. The other method to verify correct alignment is to look at the outer axle joint dust shield. This is the 1/4-1/2" circular metal extension that helps cover the big hole of the steering knuckle. If your axle and its dust shield are flush to the back side hole of the knuckle than your good. If its protruding through the steering knuckle hole to the outer side of knuckle than your axle(s) is not seated properly. In such a case the axle would prevent proper seating of wheel bearing. If your issue is with the inner axle It has been 10 years since I had mine out...

      Was referring to the outer axle meeting the inner axle. Didn’t seem like it was making full contact because it wasn’t resting against the diff tube on outside. I’ll just try and pop that vac motor off so I can see what’s going on.
      Really appreciate you replying

      @@factotumlife Meant to reply sooner.. got the whole outer to inner axle situation passenger side figured out. Was mainly stupidity on my end, but seeing the axles meet and sleeve slide over was helpful. Great video

    Your using the MOOG parts cause they are made in the America an they are greasable cause you support the country you live in.

      Sadly I believe moog isn’t made here anymore. I’ve read on some dodge forums that they’re made out of country now and if they aren’t, they’ve gone downhill in what they put out
