Ahhh, the herringbone single crochet.. this is one of my favourite stitches for creating texture - and I find it really relaxing to do as well! It creates a gorgeous chevron type pattern which is quite unusual - but is surprisingly easy since it is made in the same way as a regular single crochet, but inserting the hook slightly differently. The herringbone single crochet stitch pattern is a two row repeat, starting with a row of the herringbone single crochet, and followed by a row of reverse herringbone single crochet. Watch both videos, and you'll be a pro in no time!
How to: begin each row with one regular single crochet. For the next stitch, begin by inserting your hook the left 'leg' (vertical strand) of the previous stitch. Then, insert hook into the top of the next stitch in the usual way. Yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all three loops on hook. Work this stitch all the way along the 'front' side of your work. For the reverse side, you will work the Reverse Herringbone Single Crochet stitch, to complete the pattern.

Any advice on what kind of yarn looks best with this stitch?

@@MidniteSpectre it comes down to personal preference but I tend to avoid any fluffy or blown type yarns for this, and go for something which will give good stitch definition to emphasise the pattern. I'm just using an acrylic yarn here, but it looks awesome in a nice cotton or cotton blend too depending on your project. I also prefer to avoid really dark colours, as again the pattern doesn't really stand out as much I find 👍

You absolutely could do, personally I usually start with a chain then go straight into the herringbone pattern - either works fine 👍

Hmm.. I think if it were me, since this stitch is a variation on single crochet, I would be tempted to find a pattern/tutorial for a ruffled sleeve that you like in single crochet, and switch out the stitch? Probably the simplest way - good luck! 🧡

It looks soo easy.but once I take the yarn and hook I tend to go blank😮..and I wish I could learn it somehow..I just learned the beginning only of basic crochet..stitches tend to evade me😢

it does take a while for it to click, but honestly, stick with it! pick one stitch (single crochet is a great place to start), and just repeat.. again and again. I found repetition really helped cement it in my mind. If you have a friend who crochets and can give you an in-person demo, so much the better! Have fun, and good luck!

What is this kind of stitch normally used for?

It can be quite a dense stitch, which would make it great for things like homewares (baskets, dish cloths, blankets etc) - personally I prefer to use it as a contrasting few rounds with a plainer stitch such as a single crochet, for example as a border, because it's quite eye catching. It's also great for accessories like hats, scarves and gloves 🧡
