This piece really seems to have a more remorseful/solemn tone to it than any other of the shadow puppet pieces. I like it!
I imagine that a friend tried to save someone they care about but failed causing their death. And full of regret but their friend told them they did all they could before they died.
Me during musicals.. Seriously most of my favorites have a tragic or bittersweet ending
When I hear this song, I can never tell if I feel like the person being sung to, or the one singing. Weird.
All those feels though.
I feel that way with all her songs. That's why I like it so much, they all seem like double-edged swords and the subject/object dynamic changes constantly.

Fair enough, though I saw it as more Karkat to Terezi and Gamzee and feeling like he failed as a leader.
This makes me think of the revelation Kyuubey dropped in the 11th episode of Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

All this time, Homura had been trying so hard to protect Madoka... and yet, the very time loops that were meant to save Madoka only made her more of a target for the Incubators, and groomed her to become a more powerful witch. The more times Homura tried to save her, the worse Madoka's fate got - collateral damage, in a rescue mission meant for her.

Just kidding - I suspected this was based on Madoka Magica, or at least inspired by it.
I cannot think of a more matching song to Merlin (the TV show) spoilers ahead. (Also I recognize that this isn't related I just thought it was too cool not to bring up Merlin is my favorite show)
To grossly oversimplify Merlin it is really about Merlin seeing the future and knowing without a doubt that mordred and Morgana will one day betray and kill Arthur. Because of this he tricks and lies to Morgana betraying her trust and ultimate turning her into the insane evil witch that she became. He didn't learn from those mistakes and assumed the worst about mordred and treated him as if he could do nothing right even if mordred had never done anything wrong. And in the end Morgana and Mordred do kill Arthur and in a deleted scene Merlin realizes that Morgana could have turned out so much different if he treated her like the person she was and not the person she was going to become. Even when he kills her he says "I blame myself for what you've become". This song sounds like his lament as he was so intent on avoiding Arthur's death that ultimately he caused it.
