JAMES DEXTER WEATHERLY (March 17, 1943 - February 3, 2021) was an American singer-songwriter who wrote mostly pop and country music. He played quarterback at the University of Mississippi while also writing music with his own bands. He subsequently chose songwriting over a football career. His notable songs include 'The Need to Be' and 'Midnight Train to Georgia'.

Although known as the Peach State, peanuts are the crop atop Georgia's production list. Plains, Georgia is home to the 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter. Delta, Coca-Cola, Home Depot and UPS are among the companies headquartered in Georgia.
Georgia was a major hub for the Civil Rights movement. In 1957, Martin Luther King Jr. co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Atlanta, which played a significant role in organising marches and protests. The SCLC is still active today and remains committed to fighting for equal rights and justice in America.
Alice Malsenior Tallulah-Kate Walker (born February 9, 1944) is an American novelist, short story writer, poet, and social activist. In 1982, she became the first African-American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, which she was awarded for her novel 'The Color Purple'. Over the span of her career, Walker has published seventeen novels and short story collections, twelve non-fiction works, and collections of essays and poetry.
As an eight-year-old, Walker sustained an injury to her right eye after one of her brothers fired a BB gun. Since her family did not have access to a car, Walker could not receive immediate medical attention, causing her to become permanently blind in that eye. It was after the injury to her eye that Walker began to take up reading and writing. The scar tissue was removed when Walker was 14, but a mark still remains. It is described in her essay 'Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self'.
'The Colour Purple', 'Driving Miss Daisy', 'Fried Green Tomatoes' and many movies were filmed in Georgia. TV series, 'The Walking Dead' filmed 11 years in Senoia, Georgia.
Julia Robert's, Kim Basinger, Gladys Knight, Trisha Yearwood (married to Garth Brooks), Otis Redding (Sittin' On The Dock of the Bay), Spike Lee, Joel Chandler Harris (Google him...😉, he had 2 homes,😉), Flannery O'Connor (book/movie author, 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter' with Alan Arkin), Jeff Daniels, Ty Cobb (baseball), Dakota Fanning. All born in Georgia and so many more.

Having received two absolutely beautiful, complimentary and informative comments from Louise Poole of Georgia (USA) and Donita Bell, I was faced with the dilemma as to whose comment I would pin (this ensures that the comment permanently remains at the very top of all comments). Faced with this dilemma I evoked the wisdom of King Solomon and decided to copy and paste their comments here -

🦋🦋 I have been pondering this amazing video coupled with Neil Diamond's extraordinary interpretation of the phenomenal ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’ for about six days. I want to tell you how I came to be a tiny part.
About two weeks ago I was viewing ‘I've Been This Way Before’ and I posted my comments and naturally mentioned how I achieved my little miracle of going from Georgia to Las Vegas in 1976 to see Neil in concert. Trust me, my friend and I did a lot of hoop-jumping and shenanigans to land in about the eighth row from the stage at the Aladdin Hotel Theater! I digress. Doug, in his kind and gracious way, replied and a short conversation (back and forth) led to him saying, 'I Got a song been on my mind" (a la 'Crunchy Granola Suite ') 😉 He proceeded to mention ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’ and the possibility of making a video! Remembering I am from Georgia, he asked if I would consider helping. No one saw my eyes pop and my jaw drop! Doug asked if I could make a list of landmarks and interesting places in Georgia. That was easy! I mentioned the amazing topography that goes from the ethereal Smoky Mountains.(Blue Ridge included) through the central rolling farmlands and then to the beautiful coastal barrier islands (The Golden Isles of Georgia - St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island, Cumberland Island, and Tybee Island (Savannah) plus several less known. Incidentally, the great Okefenokee Swamp image flashed with either a crocodile or alligator... gorgeous area of South Georgia! Then we both went to work. Doug, doing his magical work and I searching for the gems of Georgia. He ended up with close to 300 images to consider. The result is this one-of-a-kind tribute to Neil Diamond and the song he asked fans of the other version to forgive him for singing it a little differently.... sighs...
I need to give my deepest gratitude to Doug for asking and then accepting what I contributed to this video. Then Doug, in his gracious huge heart, even dedicated this video to me. I am forever gratefully overwhelmed and will never forget this experience. Please note that the fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta, at the end of the video, is where I fell in love with Neil Diamond. That concert prompted the wild and exciting pursuit of Las Vegas... accomplished! Thank you, Doug!!! 🍑

This is truly a beautiful rendition of a slower paced version that has such deep emotion and loving lyrics that Doug so skilfully captured in video. The descriptions of people and places in Louise Poole's beloved Georgia helps us to understand her great love for her State. Doug, through Louise, has awakened us to some incredible and famous people who have come to shape that part of the country.
This video must have exceeded all others in images as there seems to be 85 photographs in all, including at least three moving screens with the Georgia flag blowing in the wind, a moving wheel at a cabin house at 1:37 and image 44 at 2:16 has a moving waterfall. Although not moving, I wish to mention an exquisite scene at 1:32, Amicalola Falls with its capture of mist-like falls. The Amtrak System Map was a clever addition depicting the route from Los Angeles to Atlanta at 3:42 and the paddle boat, "Georgia Queen" from Savannah, Georgia at 3:55 - 3:58 is well known to many who have taken a tour.
What an elaborate Fox Theatre in Atlanta that Doug indicated "Neil Diamond performed there in 1976", image at 4:49. Doug even searched an appropriate quote from a Georgian humourist, the late Lewis Grizzard, at 5:32.
The final image is a watercolour of the woman in the video and to the right of her is inserted a heart with the lyrics of the song enclosed within the heart. This is so touching.

❤ I have been thinking about this amazing song lately. A year and half ago I was brand new to UA-cam. I never really cared about social media and still don't! One day I tried YT and searched for my favorite singer, of course Neil Diamond. Found a long list of channels. The one that grabbed my attention was "Suzanne" ( the original video Doug made) . It was so beautiful and well done I subscribed! Then I found my favorite songs...Stones, Longfellow Serenade, and Play Me. I also remembered "I've Been This Way Before" from the concerts in Atlanta and Las Vegas (I think he closed each of his World Tour 1976 songs with it). On one song Doug replied and saw that I am from Georgia. And the rest of that story is documented on this awesome rendition of "Midnight Train to Georgia".
This video continues to fascinate me. Georgia is a rich and beautiful state and Doug showcased it so beautifully. I just wanted to make my gratitude completely known to you, Doug. I know I have splattered myself all over your channel since "Midnight Train", but that is what Neil Diamond does to a true believer, isn't it? We follow him in whatever capacity we find. Dear Sir, thank you for revealing the heart of this song. My grandmother left Georgia at 17 to chase a dream after a broken heart. That dream proved elusive, but years later found the boy she loved. Together they returned many times to the place of their birth. Then came the day she died, and he followed her on that midnight train three hours later.

Following Louise's comments in my previous videos where we got to learn where each of us lived, Neil's cover of this beautiful song dawned on me that I should approach Louise for her assistance as my knowledge of Georgia USA was at best scant. Knew the song, but not intimately; never actually viewed the lyrics. Louise kindly agreed to working with me in providing useful information/facts about Georgia, I set about downloading the lyrics and reading them in earnest in my quest to understand the song.
The more I listened to it, the more I fell in love with it. My curiosity piqued, I sought and discovered its lyricist, James Weatherly. Read up on him. My quest of discovery led me to Alice Walker, a truly amazing woman (Pulitzer Prize Fiction Winner 1982). Learning about Alice Walker has ignited in me the desire to learn more about her. This I will. Then there was Rev Martin Luther King Jr. Truly Georgia is steeped in history and Louise's immense love for her State is infectious.
So glad that you mentioned the Amtrak System Map. Spent considerable time marking out, highlighting, the route (a little over an hour). The Amtrak ticket was the one that took a great deal of time as not only did I have to edit details such as the dates but the times. I actually had to Google the departure time and duration from Los Angeles to Georgia, but having selected November 20, 2010 (the Dreams album released in 2010), I had to provide the correct departure and arrival dates and times in November 2010.
As previously stated in my response to Louise, I became so immersed in the project that it slipped my mind that I hadn't done a thumbnail. UA-cam highlights the importance of eye-catching thumbnails. I draw parallels with a shopfront, seeking to entice, especially, non-committed viewers. The commencement of the upload stalled. I had to create the thumbnail which took a little over two hours. Bearing in mind the time and effort taken on this, I decided to also insert it into the video :14 and :23 - :36 (with the Georgia flag being the difference). All in all, l I am reasonably happy with the way this video has turned out. Thanks again Donita.

Hi Louise, Only me doing what is right and giving credit where it is rightly due. As for the thumbnail, well, as you would recall, being ever so totally absorbed in that creation of this video I clean forgot (first time ever and since) to create the thumbnail. 😔There then ensued a mad panic to create one; one that would do justice to the song, Neil and our combined efforts. You will also recall that I stated back then that thumbnails are extremely important as they are the "shop front" serving to "entice" the cursory viewer to check out my video(s).

This popped up in my recommendation again. I’ve been a Neil Diamond fan for almost 50 years and was blessed to see him live a few years ago. I have nearly all of his albums and I can’t think of a single song I don’t like. Some of my favorites are Suzanne ( I know he didn’t write it), and the Grass Won’t Pay No Mind, and Brother Love. 🎉
