    Lyrics:
    He's leaving (leavin)
On that midnight train to Georgia
    (Leavin on a midnight train)
Said he's goin' back (Goin back to find)
To a simpler place and time
(Whenever he takes that ride, guess who's gonna be right by his side)
    Oh yes he is

My grandpa, who raised my siblings and I, passed away to this song as he was being taken off of life support due to complications from esophageal cancer. I agree 100%. Remember, though, that the guy in this song is a loser. "...some day he'd be a star (a superstar, but he didn't get far)" Dude couldn't even drive back because he had to sell his car, hence the train. If this song was autobiographical, what a loss it would have been for all of us.

    • @davidb1060
      @davidb1060 3 роки тому +13

I found the story of the inspiration for the song noteworthy: Jim Weatherly, a star QB at the Univ. of Mississippi, had a flag football league teammate in LA that he had become good friends with, actor Lee Majors, well before the Six Million Dollar Man. He called him one night, and his new girlfriend answered the phone, they had already met a few times so they chatted for a minute, and a not-yet-famous Farrah Fawcett said she was busy packing her clothes to take "the midnight plane to Houston". Jim said bells went off in his head as he thought "That sounds like a song title", so as soon as he hung-up the phone he grabbed his guitar and was finished writing and composing the song within 30-45 minutes.

I used to love watching the various groups perform on the Ed Sullivan show. Gladys Knight and the Pips were one of my favorites.
As an adult, I would have dance parties in my living room with my besties. This was ALWAYS one of songs we'd re-enact. I was always The Pips. I know every lyric.
I wanted to be smooth like The Pips. Being Caucasian, uncoordinated, and not able to carry a tune never got in the way of having the time of my life.
    The best of times.

It does but it's no longer about the words, it's about depth. I mean rap was basically people talking to the beat.
But now we have rappers talking about their pain or trying to push genres to their limits.
If you need some music to check out I suggest: Thundercat, Denzel Curry, Break bot as some starters.

A song that holds a very special place in my heart. When I was a kid and me and my dad would go on long drives together, we would always sing this song together. Me singing gladys knight and my dad singing the pips. He passed away 2 weeks ago and it now makes me cry to hear this song but it will always be a special memory to me 💖

Friday 3 March 2023. 13:43 in my office listening to good old soul music in Zimbabwe Africa. I went down the slippery blues slope when I started off with The staples singers (lets do it again). No regrets. This music is perfect. Setting the tone for a restful weekend. One love to each and everyone of you wherever in the world you are right now. Love and peace. #wutangisforthechildren.

For those of you young people who do not understand why grown people talk so much about the old school. It's all about the time when that song was out. Some of you may like the sound but some of us have the experiences as well during that time. So don't be surprised if you see a uncle or aunt just waving their hands with their eyes close, just remembering the good ole days.

I’m 21, and I grew up listening to old school, and it brings back so many nice memories with my Aunt that passed back in 2016. It’s sentimental, wayyy better than the music being made now, and just so artistic in the sense you can feel the emotion more so in my opinion, in this sort of music. It’s captured in an authentic and stunning way you can’t help but you smile and listen
