I never missed an episode, and now I can see many of them again. My utter favorite was the "drunk episode' where they tried to show how drunks really lose their reactions . Only they used Johnny Fever, who kept getting more and more on target, the drunker he got...
Love how he always pronounced "babies" as "Bay-buz". Johnny was my hero. Lived his life and job on his own terms and didn't give a DAMN about rules or societal expectations. That show was perfectly cast. Johnny the lazy stoner DJ, Venus the hip cool cat, Jennifer the stereotypical dumb blonde who was smarter than anyone ever had an inkling and had the world by the tail, Bailey who was the subtle unrecognized babe who never got what she was seeking in her career, Herb the absolutely useless promotion guy, Mr. Carlson the inept general manager who essentially let Jennifer run things for him, Les the clueless news and hog market guy who thought their audience was on the edge of their seats for his hog futures reports, Andy who had grand plans but could never rope his staff into compliance, and Mrs. Carlson the station owner who looked and behaved much like Cruella Deville and wielded far less power than she believed she had. And who knew - Herb's wife was played by none other than Edie McClurg!
On wkrp the doctor Johnny fever is one great disjocky the whole cast just fabulous. I keep all the collection on my table you won't be forgotten mr hessmen
Still one of my favorite lines . . . That was one song . . . And here's another! And . . . Now for the long version. Great lines. Great scenes. Great stories. Great music, as programmed by Howard Hesseman and Dr. Johnny Fever. Great times. Great character. Great actor. Great man. RIP, and thanx so very very much, for the magic, music, and memories. Love you, HH. Miss you, Johnny.
RIP to Johnny doctor fever I'm now 49 years old and had Colon Cancer too and had surgery to remove the cancer and so far so good I'm recovering in hospital in Hamilton here
I'm 52, diagnosed with Colon Ca in 2006, 36 was young to get it but I had ulcerative colitis since early 20's so that was probably the cause. Diagnosed as as stage 2 T4N0M0 two surgies, 8mths of chemo, but I'm still around 16yrs later. Initially had an illeostomy, but went with the internal Jpouch about 2 yrs later. I know It's tough time, and every individual case is different, but hopefully you can use my example as a some inspiration. Hang in there, listen to your oncologists, and take the help friends & family offer. I won't BS you and say it's going to fun or easy, but 16yrs from now you can look back like me and say "Hey, it sucked at the time, but I'm still around, and the experience just made stronger" Ps laughter is good medicine, but try to avoid too much KRP, might pull the stitches!!!👍🤣❤ from Toronto
Blessed be, guys! Blessed be. Hang in there. Congratulations on your progress! I was diagnosed with AML 3 yrs ago. Laughter is the best medicine, that is true! My daughter gave me the WKRP box set, after most of the music had been restored, and ... I'm 73 now, laughing with and at The Doctor, RIP Howard!, and my favorite show WKRP ... and beating the odds so far. Thanx, WKRP, for years of pleasure. Blessed be, gang, blessed be.
@@echoecho3108 hello and good Sunday morning who ever you are? Let me introduce myself I'm Peter from Hamilton Ontario Canada and to explain I was what the doctors called a blue baby I was born with a whole in my heart back on July 15 1972 in Toronto Ontario Canada which is about an hour east of Hamilton, had open heart surgery when I was 4 years old at sick kids hospital in Toronto and grew up fine until April of 2006 got a blood clot which caused a stroke on my left side of my body went through 3 months of rehab to learn to walk talk and take care of myself and then on September first of 2008 I didn't wake up that morning had a cardiac arrest (similar to a heart attack) which I was saved by both my cat Nemo and my then wife Angy got to Toronto general hospital in time put into induced 2 day coma eventough I was pronounced clinical dead when I arrived there, had open heart surgery again and they put a defibulator in my chest and came back home about 5 weeks later. Nemo won a Medel for saving my life a year later at a place called paws ways and Angy decided to leave our marriage at the end of 2009. But I moved to Hamilton 2 years later which I'm renting a one bedroom apartment here from my uncle Angelo who owns the property. But with doctor Johnny fever's character that Howard hedsman played so well. Apparently he was only supposed to be on the first show the pilot where he says booger LoL
All blessings to you all, friends, and may each of you find a miracle. I'm dealing with recurrent prostate cancer, myself -- if I beat it once, I'll do it again, and I sense I won't do it alone, friends. And, yes, few things lift my spirits these days like _WKRP_ -- who knew that Dr. Johnny Fever was as good a therapist as he was a DJ? (Howard Hesseman, you are much missed.)
RIP Howard. Johnny Fever is definitely one of the great televisions characters. I wonder how much input Howard Hesseman had in selecting the music for Johnny, because as Norris Breeze, the weasly programming service guy Momma Carlson had hired noted, "He's spinning Solid Gold"
I was not around to know and realize this til today: I found a song by Little Willie John, the original version of "Fever." He recorded it for King Records...in Cincinnati, Ohio! Fever in the morning, indeed.
@ 2:15 that black bumper sticker that says baby is from a rock station in Detroit WRIF which is where I'm from. A dj on that station named Arthur Penhallow made saying "BABY !" a staple in Detroit. Andy had a bumper sticker in his office from another Detroit rock station WLLZ.
The last clip at 9:00 was supposed to be The Eagles song "The Long Run"; unfortunately, the rights weren't able to be obtained for the DVD collection. Here's the clip with the original version intact: ua-cam.com/video/ZhFqZKPWtKc/v-deo.html
They even dubbed over Gary Sandy's lines. The Eagles are always pretty much impossible when it comes to their music rights. They regularly take down UA-cam videos from fans who cover their songs too. They made great music but for some reason those guys don't just hate each others guts, they seem to hate everyone else too. 🤣
All riiight - music, yeah. these were great!!! and you editing is like so perfect. have great day!!🌷🌱 but, i did happen like the Captain and and Tanniel (sp?)
6:34 “That was ‘Suction Prints’ from Captain Beefheart’s new album ‘Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)’”…. Soothing wakeup music indeed; I own this album and it’s as discordant and jarring as anything you could possibly start you day with. Wonderful performance by Howard. RIP Dr. Fever.
We can't watch reruns of the show because of music rights. Even back then Hugh Wilson said they could only afford about 15 seconds of any song. Some 15 seconds were denied. Watch his interview at FoundationInterviews channel.
As I recall, there was also the fact that they shot the show on video - which at the time had entirely different rules with music than had they shot the show on film. Had they shot on film, they probably couldn't have afforded most of it.
God almighty this reminds me how much fun I had in radio before it turned into a computer programmer job. I hate the shat I'm doing now. I program computers for about half what it's worth if I did a real job. But they're gonna get a big surprise about a week after I'm gone If I suddenly get unhired. If I don't log in everything becomes invisible. Still there mind you but not without the knowing the password. They don't know about computers they don't care about computers and that is going to bite them in the ass
They tried releasing the series on DVD but the wouldn't/couldn't buy the copy rights for all the original music, so they used canned music instead. Needless to say the DVD release was a big failure!
My favorite episode is "A Date With Jennifer". In one of the best scenes of the series Les is getting ready for his date with Jennifer and putting on a hair piece. The original episode played "Hot Blooded" it was a hoot. I was so upset when I purchased the DVD set and they changed the music. The scene lost all of its appeal.
The clip at 8:16 is from Season 1, as are other clips. But, I wonder why they changed all of the music from the original, to bogus music on the DVD set. Copyright issues?
Back in the day, they could only afford the rights to about 15 seconds of the various songs, and only because the show was recorded on video tape and not film. On the DVD release, they could only get the rights back to about 85% of the original music used on the show.
The moment when Dr. J gets unleased with the new format of the station is iconic. Love that scene...
I never missed an episode, and now I can see many of them again. My utter favorite was the "drunk episode' where they tried to show how drunks really lose their reactions . Only they used Johnny Fever, who kept getting more and more on target, the drunker he got...
So many of the shows that I grew up watching no longer have any appeal, but WKRP seems to get better every year.
I never get tired of watching this great sitcom that was so underrated. Howard Hessman was a true gem to watch as Dr. Johnny Fever...R.I.P.
I LOVED this show when I was a kid, and it is better now! I hope there are full episodes out there somewhere, that would be fun!

I think it's mentioned in the Paley Center reunion in 2014 or so. Reid, too.
Never heard him play Green Onions.
We used to get together in the lounge of the college radio station every Monday night (when it was on Mondays) to all watch WKRP.

Amazon Prime Music or XM needs to have a WKRP playlist. And throw in some Fever!
You know Dr. Fever (Howard Hessman) would have made a terrific disc- jocky. He was funny and had a great voice.
Your right, good call.
In the late 60’s Hessman used the name ‘Don Sturdy’ when he was DJ on FM station KMPX in San Fransisco.
