- As part of the admissions process for the Oxford Mathematics undergraduate mathematics degree, we ask all our applicants to take the Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT). In this video, online for the first time, our applications expert James Munro gives some tips and advice for people getting started with the Mathematics Admissions Test.

Advice from a current oxford math student, sorted in descending importance:
1. Do ALL past papers, if you have time
2. Try mock exams before the actual exam
3. Do some STEP and other admission test questions
4. Do some low-to-mid-level olympiad questions
James Munro Questions 15-25 of AMC12 or Questions 1-10 of AIME
Hey guys it you like some challenge do IIT JEE ADVANCE MATHEMATICS PAPER ONLY high school if you did Really you are aussom mind If not reply I will give some wonderful SHORT TRICK by which we conquer this fort in second.
The question given in vedio is literally easy to moderate level. Not as high
@@peterwu6762 I guess the UKMT (UK olympiad) questions would also work right?
Also, do I study from regional level questions or national ones? (Basically 1st round or 2nd)
@Peter Wu How many marks did you get?
Thank you
An Oxford Maths twitch sounds like the best thing I would never think of.
It's not twitch, but we've started a weekly MAT livestream over at www.maths.ox.ac.uk/r/mat !
@@jamesmunro that sounds fun! Wish I had that when I was practicing the MAT.
Kindly watch on UA-cam this video -( 3 huge tops to pass any exam by ILovUAllah)
James Munro is an absolute legend!!! He did a couple of sessions like that when i went to oxford for a summer school. His enthusiasm for maths makes me smile :)
James, like all great mathematicians, writes x as an x itself. As you say though, he is a legend
@@icemaster523 lol no thats just wrong

good luck if you're taking it next year!
I'm glad you made this James because a lot of people I know who were studying for MAT didn't really know what to do for it and none of my teachers did either so there were a lot of strategies for MAT which they didn't get to learn which would have helped like the idea of substituting points (which reduces 2014 Q1B to just substituting x= - 1 in). I think there are other ideas which are necessary for both STEP and MAT questions like the number of roots a cubic has based on the y values of its turning points which most people don't learn or consider (2019 Q1A is an example of this). Before this, it felt like there weren't any resources by Oxford to help which I felt was a bit of a barrier, especially for students at schools where the teachers can't support them so it's good workshops/online resources are being made. Will there be more things like this in future?
Like Aditi, I also met you on a summer school too but I applied to Cambridge instead - sorry! What was your opinion on the difficulty of MAT 2019? Most people I know think it's one of the hardest ones while I'd say it's probably about 3rd. Why was question 4 so topology like rather than geometry too?
I don't want to promise too much, but I absolutely want to make more resources to support anyone at a school or college that can't help them with MAT. That summer school you did was great, but if we do stuff online it can potentially reach more people.
MAT 2019 was my first time being in charge of the MAT paper from start to finish. I think I'm still too close to it to properly review it- maybe in a year or so I'll be ready to talk about what I've learned (for example, I think 2019 Q1A was a reasonable question but I wrote it, so maybe I'm just biased).
Such a good thing that this is public!
Very helpful. Thanks James
And that's what I want to ask!
17:00 I have a neater way of doing that one! Solving for y yields the equation y^4-y+c=0. Take the derivative and then see where you'll have a turning point and set c such that the equation is zero at that point and you're done!
Me who is a 6th grader: Hmm.... Interesting
me as a year 9: yes yes.. makes a lot of sense … y yields.. derivatives
Could you make a video for the Computer Science questions in the MAT? For example, 2019 Q7 required less maths and more logic; so how does one prepare ?
Hi Nick - Oxford maths grad and teacher here - haven't done the 2019 paper yet but I've made a playlist for the 2018 paper that includes the computer science questions here - ua-cam.com/play/PLUuwecyIK3fhz00OVD3PhwLGSejwrwajm.html
Hi, I just have a question on answering the long questions: Can I use pseudocode to explain a procedure (such as MAT 2021 Q6(ii))?
Thank you
Hi James - and everyone taking this paper! Oxford maths grad and teacher here - just wanted to flag up some videos I've made on this paper for anyone interested. There's a playlist here going through every question from the 2018 paper here ua-cam.com/play/PLUuwecyIK3fhz00OVD3PhwLGSejwrwajm.html and also partial ones for 2016 here ua-cam.com/play/PLUuwecyIK3fjCIhQyIJbBXO7N96xkpgdW.html and 2017 here ua-cam.com/play/PLUuwecyIK3fg9w54cyRGn73A5yea24wvb.html . Good luck all!
Muchas gracias

how do American students register to take the MAT?

Is it a bad idea to try to learn first year analysis definitions theorems and an example for each theorem better than the back of my hand before trying these kinds of questions?
yes
can say d greater than b no clue for c
I also want to know that, is the interview questions much more difficult than these samples? I feel that solving them is much easier than using English to teach them clearly to other people.
I recorded a video about an interview question; see ua-cam.com/video/WLZvN1Asbxc/v-deo.html ^James, admissions coordinator
@@OxfordMathematics thank you, I shall watch it
nice vedio
I am really sorry to mess up the comment forum, but I suppose it's really my last question: is the 1st choice question (b)?
Correct, the answer to 2016 Q1B is (b). Full worked solution at www.maths.ox.ac.uk/r/mat ^James, admissions coordinator
At 11:45 qs of hexagon, it was mentioned that it was an irregular hexagon, but you take it as regular! How it was taken?
From the question, it's irregular with all sides of equal length. That means that the sides are the same length, but the angles aren't all the same. I just use the fact that the sides are the same length to solve the question.
@@jamesmunro Understood. thanks a lot.
what's the answer of question pls?
I am nervous when I see the MAT, oh!! By the way, my ans. to the 2nd choice question is (a)
Correct, the answer to 2015 Q1J is (a). Full worked solution at www.maths.ox.ac.uk/r/mat ^James, admissions coordinator
May I ask whether the third one is (b), I think I have met most of th. before but I am la. to find the ans..
Correct, the answer to 2018 Q1G is (b). Full worked solution at www.maths.ox.ac.uk/r/mat ^James, admissions coordinator
@@OxfordMathematics Thank you for reply
@@OxfordMathematics I can find the solution actually from the mat web. past papers, thank you a lot /though that needs some search work.
Since I was correct, I did not find the ans..
Hi, I am applying for Oxford to study maths in 2023. I have a simple query, how much does the MAT count towards getting an offer compared to other stuff such as GCSEs, personal statements and predicted grades? Furthermore, if you do a summer school maths course does it massively make a difference?
Hi - you have to do sufficiently well in MAT to progress to interview. Summer schools help show commitment but aren't crucial.
Is it too late to do the MAT at age 21?
Not at all- mature applicants are welcome to apply for Maths, and take the MAT. ^James, admissions coordinator.
When do u recommend to start do past papers for MAT
James is doing a MAT session tomorrow (Thursday) so you can ask him then! www.maths.ox.ac.uk/study-here/undergraduate-study/maths-admissions-test
@@OxfordMathematics Thanks for pointing people to the livestream! We
If you've studied the topics on the MAT syllabus www.maths.ox.ac.uk/system/files/attachments/syllabus_1.pdf , you're ready to start trying MAT papers. For most people, that's some point during Year 12, or over the summer between Year 12 and Year 13. It's all a bit strange this year, so maybe you'll need to wait until next academic year to learn the maths you need to approach MAT questions.
hi, where can i get the answers. Thanks

Anyone got any tips on the mat, i think i have a problem with mathematical thinking - the question seem very vague and lack information. Thanks for any help?
Hi! I think the thing you've spotted is that the questions leave you to your own devices- you have to decide for yourself how to make progress with the problem. The best way to prepare for this is to practice doing maths problems that don't give you many hints. For me, this was the last couple of questions on past A level papers, those ones where you have to have an idea. From there, I built up more and more experience of making a plan and executing the plan.
@@jamesmunro thank you so much
Anyone who have solved the second one ??

How to get admission to LLB at Oxford University London?
The only reason they r posting this is probably because they will have to cancel the maths open day. RIP
Sorry to contradict you, but I made this because the Pembroke study day is cancelled. If (when) the open day is cancelled, we'll do something amazing online instead. Watch this space :)
James Munro the one at Oxford or Cambridge? I know the Cambridge Pembroke has cancelled its open day, such a shame.
@@ii4511 When I said "Pembroke study day", I meant a small event in Oxford's Pembroke college, which would have been held yesterday but was cancelled. When I said "open day" I meant the Oxford departmental open days on 25th April and 2nd May. I don't know about Cambridge, sorry.
