*Soundboard solution:* Grab yourself one of those plastic toy Disney Rey lightsabers. No one is buying them so you can typically find one at a Target for around 15.00 - 20.00 and just break it open and take the soundboard out of that. They actually sound pretty good if you swap the speaker it comes with and have sounds for clashing and swinging around the lightsaber. Plus they are super tiny and fit into just about anything.

I've just got to say this; Odin, you are a great teacher / presenter for this sort of thing. You explained everything very well and - most importantly - had Brittni do the work rather than just letting her watch. That's really encouraging and helpful for everyone watching. I really like your videos on AweMe and OdinMakes, and it was great seeing you with someone else.

Very helpful tutorial. I hate the idea of buying a cheap lightsaber or ordering a custom one. Because every Jedi builds they're own lightsaber. And the force guides them to build the perfect lightsaber for them. So I think it would be cooler to build my own in my style. And this is quite helpful.

I saw this video and also thought of trying to make a saber designed off the Lifegiver or Orgus Din's lightsaber from SWTOR and also thought of how to make a Black Core blade. Currently my idea is using 2 different sized polycarbonate tubes with black tinted cellophane in the center one and clear in the outer one, letting the single LED, not yet sure on my color choice, be there to try and light through it all.
Would love to see yours just if anything to see how the blade looks.

brianr101010: I made the same remark out loud at my iPad when he said that in the video as well! What was used is a 3-cell Graflex flashgun, that you would commonly see being used by NEWS photographers in or around the 1940’s. The cameras in question, the flashgun was the long, vertical and cylindrical tube that most photographers would grasp with their right hand in holding the camera!

Cosplayers and hardcore Star Wars fanatics still poach graflexes to make authentic prop lightsaber replicas from the flashgun. As a person that appreciates and owns several antique cameras, I am upset that prices for antique graflexes have spiked due to the poaching of the flashguns to make authentic props. They don't make analog cameras as good as they did in the 1940's, and fans ruin it without thinking they could use alternatives like the tutorial in this video to make a replica without destroying antique photo equipment.

I have replica "Darth Vader" and "Anakin/Luke" lightsabers. And have always wondered why a "weapon" from "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away" has letters and numbers from European speaking people on them.. This is what I Googled. ..
"Luke's was built from the flash attachment of a Graflex 3 cell unit, while Vader's was made from a different flash attachment - a British 3-cell MPP Microflash..
All the other lightsabers we see are made from scratch.. The originals from 1977 are the camera flashguns, with bits of windscreen wiper blade glued on.

I'm sure Odin knows the orginal Skywalker lightsaber was made from an old Graflex. He was implying using found parts, especially from the hardware store is very much in the spirit of the orginal prop builders. I've heard that the orginal prop cost less than 15 dollars in raw materials at the time of its building.

This is what I like to see, making them from scratch. Sure, there are several places to buy pre-built sabers, but making it yourself from scratch really gives you a unique, and customized saber, and allows you to know the ins and outs of your own build so later you can repair it if damaged (and you *should* be smacking your friends with it, etc., so damage will happen over time).

The original props didn't actually use windshield wiper blades for the grips. That's misinformation that's been spread around. They were hard rubber tracks (called a "T-strip" by the original prop maker) commonly believed to be used for sliding cabinet doors

Hey, very nice and neat build, it just left me with two Questions.
    1. Is the 1" Polycarbonate tubing "Battleready".
    2. Which Soundboard did you use (the Dimensions seem to fit really nice).
    thx in advance

    • @OdinMakes
      @OdinMakes 7 років тому +10

1: Yes, Polycarbonate tube will not shatter, and basically will not break. It is the same plastic safety glasses are made from, and it is a used in bulletproof glass (there is more to bulletproof than just polycarb, but it's a major ingredient.) If you force it (pun) it will bend and get white stress marks, but breaking it is really tough to do.
2: We used the Obsidian sound board. it is made to fit in a saber hilt or even a blaster grip.

No! Not at all with these blades- never like the toys do.
The fun thing that these blades will do is that little piece will come of the end, and the plastic diffuser will fly out. It looks like that 'snake in a can' joke! If you watch the preview for The Force is Strong, it right here on Beyond Geek, that is the saber Brittni is using on the Death Star set. And the same tube is what all of the sabers are using.
