The history of the South Bank Parklands is that the whole area was resumed by the State Government as the site for World Expo 1988. It was a semi-industrial, low income housing area with a high Indigenous population. There were lot's of protests over people being displaced from affordable housing and the impact on the local Indigenous community. Fun Fact... Americans memorialized Captain James Cook too, in the form of the TV show "Star Trek". Hints are in the captains name "Captain James Kirk" and the ship was called "Enterprise" against Cook's ship which was named "Endeavour". Also, the other characters are based on Cook's crew. The main writer of the series was a complete Cook junkie and studied his life and the history of his voyages.
They have a beach in the city because the ones on the Redcliffe Peninsula and Sandgate are into Moreton bay so they're very shallow and don't have waves. Also they just could because why not. Also brisbane is a very tropical city so rainforest is common. Also you should've gone to Mt Coot-Tha is you didn't
A koala is not a bear. Also a car 'trunk' is a 'boot' in Aussie (or most of the old British Empire countries). ps. the 'hood' of a car is also a 'bonnet'.
Sorry for being overly critical, but travelling the World is an educational act as well as fantastic fun. (ps. My wife nad I flew around the world twice in 2019, but with Covid19 we don't expect to do so any time soon. (pps. very enjoyable videos.)
When you were at the Captain Cook Memorial you forgot to mention that it is placed right on the border between Queensland and New South Wales. And in summer there is a one hour time difference between the 2 States. Great vid though. There are plenty of wild Kangaroos in Wacol just south west of the city.
Kangaroo's don't charge as such but they get blinded and freaked out so do tend to run straight into your car which can do some serious damage! Also I'm from brissie and have no idea what those yellow people are on the side of the road, always wondered myself!
Number one rookie tourist mistake ............... go to Brisbane and don't get to Stradbroke Island .............. accessible by public transport from Brisbane. Go on the gorge walk big chance to see dolphins, whales (if right time of year), Mana Rays, Eagles and heaps of other wildlife.
For anyone reading this, in the Gold Coast, you can drive to Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Reserve and see hundreds of kangaroos in the wild. You can also see koalas in the trees but you need good eyesight as they sit up high in the eucalyptus trees and camouflage well. It is free, but you will need a car to get there as it is in the northern area of the Gold Coast.
Fun Fact: Captain James Cook was not a captain. He was a Lieutenant. The person in charge of a navy ship is called the Captain which is why he is usually called "Captain Cook" but his rank was 3 steps below captain. His correct name and title was Lt James Cook. Even today only the person in command of the largest ships in the Royal Navy (i.e. HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince Of Wales) are Captains.
You made me laugh, Kangaroo charging the car 🤣. The only time you would get in trouble with a Roo would be if you put yourself in between a two Alpha fighting it out over a mate. Americans are funny and Aussies love taking the piss out of you!
Happy Hoppe It’s how we roll as Aussies Hon, we love the thought of leaving our Mates (or visitors in your case) believing something knowing you’ll find out its bullshit and either laugh or doh! That’s the humour we have. 12:22 - that's a bearded dragon, they do produce a very mild venom but the chances of being bitten by one are super slim, as you saw he would much prefer to run away from you Next time you're in Brisbane you should check out the MacArthur Museum in the city centre!
It's a real buzz for a 78 y/o man born and bred in Sydney, Australia, and now lives in Western Australia to see young people coming to our country and enjoying themselves. Kangaroos are really nocturnal and spend most of their time is spent feeding at night and laying around all day. (like some humans, e.g. my teen age grand kids). If you approach a Kangaroo in your car at night on a road and it wants to run, it almost always will run where it can see, usually in the lights from your car. Humans are the same. That's why sometimes drunks and burglars get run over with cars (I think)

Hints are in the captains name "Captain James Kirk" and the ship was called "Enterprise" against Cook's ship which was named "Endeavour". Also, the other characters are based on Cook's crew. The main writer of the series was a complete Cook junkie and studied his life and the history of his voyages.
No way, that is a fun fact! Thanks for sharing!
As someone who sees kangaroos every day, they aren't dangerous. I keep an eye on their body language, they'll let you know if you're too close.
Ok 😅 we later got to pet kangaroos at Lone Pine and it was a wonderful experience:)
We went to Mt Coot-Tha the following day 😊😍
You guys should come one day soon
I travelled 4 hours from my hometown to play pokemon GO on that rainforest walk XD
Hahaha... you drove right past us on the M1...
I always thought brisbane was such a easy word to say 😂
😂 yup, I later found out I said it wrong 🤪
What a shame you headed north instead of into the Northern Rivers to visit Byron Bay, Mullumbimby and the legendary Nimbin.
When you were at the Captain Cook Memorial you forgot to mention that it is placed right on the border between Queensland and New South Wales. And in summer there is a one hour time difference between the 2 States. Great vid though. There are plenty of wild Kangaroos in Wacol just south west of the city.
I've seen a toddler trip over the border and land an hour later.
apply called Happy,!!!!!! livin in Brianne for 45 years so underrated and that's without the Morten Bay and the islands
Yes, we totally need to come back to visit Morten Bay and the islands! We didn’t know about those until people’s comments :)
@@HappyHoppe stay happy Happy , a real uplift to see two so happy stay safe
Kangaroo's don't charge as such but they get blinded and freaked out so do tend to run straight into your car which can do some serious damage! Also I'm from brissie and have no idea what those yellow people are on the side of the road, always wondered myself!
Is it hard driving on the other side of the road?
Peter got used to it in the UK and I only did 2x in New Zealand- it wasn’t hard, just different and took a little getting used to :)
The trunk of the car is called the Boot 🇦🇺
I look up to you two! When I graduate I hope to travel the world like you guys (=
😳 🤩 that sounds incredible!!! We’ll need to come back!
Awesome 😎 video once again
Thanks 😊
Yeah bris vegas!!
It's not brisabayne as you guys would say , it's called Brisbane, but we pronounce it as though, brisben
Nice video!
Thanks 😊
Surfers paradise beach = Eye candy in summer
Could of had another hour parking, our parking officers are pretty laid back too.
Good tip:)
The captain cook memorial light house was the worlds first laser lighthouse
😯 I didn’t know that, thanks!
Interesting 🤔 thanks for sharing
Don't need to buy water just get a refillable bottle Tap water is OK, may taste different but it is safe,
briz-BUN plenty of roos and koalas at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.
Yes we went there 😍
At 12:26, that lizard is an Eastern Water Dragon. They are harmless.
Ok phew 😅
Should of went to town of 1770 in Queensland. Would of made your Captain Cook story better.
Bris-brain lol. Sorry, bris-bern would be how most Aussies would pronounce it but great video love watching people react to our beautiful country. 👍
You made me laugh, Kangaroo charging the car 🤣. The only time you would get in trouble with a Roo would be if you put yourself in between a two Alpha fighting it out over a mate. Americans are funny and Aussies love taking the piss out of you!
😂 they said it so seriously though! 🤣
Happy Hoppe It’s how we roll as Aussies Hon, we love the thought of leaving our Mates (or visitors in your case) believing something knowing you’ll find out its bullshit and either laugh or doh! That’s the humour we have. The best bit is though when you tell us the story after the fact when you did what we said and we howl laughing 😂 We are a little warped yet it’s all done in much jest, fun and love.
Happy trails x
We've got Koala's in Australia but we don't have any Bears unless you go to a zoo then you might find some Bears.
If your still in Brisbane happy to show you around
Thanks! We are not! Our 1 year world travel finished in 2018 - just still editing 😊
@@HappyHoppe oh wow sounds like a fantastic year let me know if you ever come back
I can't believe that you try to eat healthy but then buy tinned spaghetti!
Australia is the best place on earth
Yeah. You do NOT wanna get a parking ticket in Southbank!! 😬😬
Oh hun come back between October and April, the heat and humidity... you’ll know what it feels like to truly want to die...
We were there in March :)
12:22 - that's a bearded dragon, they do produce a very mild venom but the chances of being bitten by one are super slim, as you saw he would much prefer to run away from you
Next time you're in Brisbane you should check out the MacArthur Museum in the city centre!
Or possibly a Water Dragon.
Koala's aren't bears. Hope you had a good time.
I’m Victorian and wish I lived in Brisbane 😢
Snowball Channel I moved from melb to Brisbane 7 years ago and I’m loving it here! Best decision I ever made.
Julie Dee Please don’t make me jealous 😊
The little yellow men on the highway are to point out electrical wires so that workmen can make sure they don't get electrocuted :)
Time to name this series the Captain Cook world tour.
Did I ever tell you I live close to his birth place.
😆 yeah it became funny every time we saw another monument to him!
@@HappyHoppe I understand Star Trek was based on Cook's diary with James Cook being James Kirk. I'm loving your videos.
Glad you enjoy our Australia videos :)
Most of the first half of this vid is on the Goldie not Brissie!
Brisbane is the best I have lived here my whole life
Awesome 👏 beautiful place to live!
As a long time Brisbane resident, I'd be honored if you pronounce it "Brisbin"
Cheers
Peter reminds me of CAMERAN from "Ferris Bueller's day off".
It kills me every time she says brisbAIn
😂 so sorry 🤦♀️ I’ve learned now 🤪 I say it correctly on the day we first met kangaroos when an ex-pat corrected me 😁
