The time John Lennon appeared on Philadelphia TV to give the weather report. As told by Larry Kane.
I'm from Philadelphia and was 13 years old in 1975. I happened to up watching the 11 o'clock news that night to catch any news about The Philadelphia Flyers who were in the Stanley Cup finals at the time. It was a shock to see John on the set of our local news doing the weather. It's too bad that the geniuses at the station erased the video of the broadcast that night. I remember another segment of the broadcast where they interviewed John as he walked along in Fairmount Park. I haven't seen that clip since it aired that night. It was probably erased as well. In the interview John was asked about The Beatles touring years. John said it was a whirlwind and he never got to see any of the towns that they played. He stated that he never got to see Philadelphia and he complimented how nice it was. He was also asked what act was as big as The Beatles today (May 1975), he said Elton John. I wanted to go to where the radio station was located to get his autograph but it was the complete opposite side of town and no one was interested in going with me. My friends were in to Kiss at the time and couldn't care less about John Lennon. My father thought he was a radical hippie and I knew better than to ask him for a ride. If I could go back in time, I would have found a way to get there.
Thanks for sharing all this great backdrop! It’s funny he answered Elton. He had been hanging around Elton at the time and Elton the biggest musical act at the time. Thanks again for sharing this cool background stuff!
@@JonBlackstone thanks. I did listen to radio most of that weekend. I remember he liked ELO. He was funny and charming. He was in his A Hard Day's Night mode. He talked with toms of regular people as they called in with their pledges. He made me laugh when he told one dude who was rambling on that it was time for him to hang up and go shave his pimples.
Of course he would help Larry out, they were mates! Larry got to tag along with them on one of their American tours early on . He was young and they considered him to be an honest media conduit to their fans. He's got tons of great stories.
Wow! This is so cool!
.. I wonder if John regretted his career in the music industry, when he had such a feel for being a weatherman??
I'd say he would be a great comedian !
@@Tom-hk6ub Paul was good as Viv
Being born and raised in Philadelphia I remember this
lies
Wow that’s cool! Was Larry Kane a local celebrity? Thanks for watching!
By the way, someone commented “lies” to your comment. I’m assuming it’s one of those people who believe The Beatles were replaced by impersonators or something along those lines. I get a lot of comments from the “Paul is dead” folks.
@@JonBlackstone Jon, I too probably watched this in real time as I live close enough to Philadelphia to recieve all of the tv stations from there. Channel 6 Action News was pretty much the top dog in the local tv news market (and it's been that way up to this day). Get Larry's book on Lennon, called "Lennon Revealed", it's worth it if you are a Beatles or Lennon fan.
Larry was the lead news anchor on Action News (TV) as well as doing the radio news on the legendary Famous 56 WFIL am (Philadelphia). But he got his first start as a reporter in Miami in the 1960's and he was allowed exclusive personal access to the Beatles duringI believe their first or second major US tours. Lennon took a liking to him as Larry took John's dry humor with grace. Larry's work in having John coming to Philly for that weekend benefit broadcast on Channel 6 was key in allowing John to stay in the US and obtain his green card. John had the backing of Larry and the rest of the staff at Action News and that caught the eye of Phillly mayor Frank Rizzo, a tough Mayor who President Nixon admired for his ability to keep Philly clean of the social unrest ongoing in other US major cities in the late 60's early 70's. In the end, Larry helped John gain his US citizenship based from that charity work Lennon did for the station!
My copy of Lennon Revealed, one of the first printings, contained a dvd of that Action News broadcast with John doing the weather.....
@@JonBlackstone Yes he was the biggest newscaster ib the city for a long time
Meanwhile bob dylan “ you don’t need to be a weatherman to know which way the wind blows”
Thanks for watching! I hope you’ll check out the full episode: The Beatles Abbey Road (Album Review)

74 year old scoucer here, i truly miss his humour unlike the rest of the mop heads.
