A Christmas Phone Message - December 1989
#bluechristmas #elvispresley #elviscover #music #christmas #christmassongs
Back in the days of phone answering machines I used to record a special outgoing message every December. This was my message for 1989 to let everyone know I would be moving to Nashville at the start of the new year. Among the vintage film footage of family members there is a shot of me that holds a special place in my heart. I was on a beach in Santa Monica right after I left Seattle heading for Nashville. I was alone; playing my guitar and singing a song I had just written “The Great I Am”. At that moment I stopped playing so I could watch the sun going down. I was marveling at the beauty of God’s creation; filled with joy over the door of opportunity God had opened for me. I was using the video camera as an audio recorder so I would remember the song I was working on. The camera was laying on a beach blanket on the sand. At the time I had no idea what a special moment I was capturing.

The Star Wars Phenomenon 1977 (Part 2)

This is Part ll of a three part series titled "The Star Wars Phenomenon". Now you can experience what it was like to be alive when the very first Star Wars movie was released. I was 13 years old in 1977 and Star Wars not only blew my mind; but those of the entire world. Star Wars changed our culture and altered the course of the motion picture industry. I was a total movie fanatic; and because ...

As always thanks Jon ,,Lets get the EJ Band into the R&R Hall of fame ,,Merry x-mas from London Ont ,,Canada
Merry Christmas to you and a wonderful new year year ahead!
Didn't John Lennon do this song with Elton
Not this song. Elton played piano and sand on John’s “Whatever Gets You Through The Night”. Then Lennon played guitar and sang on Elton’s version of “Lucy In The Sky…”. Elton also recorded another Lennon song “One Day At a Time”. Thanks for watching!
@JonBlackstone thanks
I wanted to extend my best wishes to you and yours on this holiday season. I really wanted to also thank you for all the hours of entertainment that you provided to me and to all the people who love your content. I'm really happy that I found your channel and I enjoy your work very much. I'm looking forward to the new year and all of your endeavors. Best of luck best wishes and I hope you have the best holiday.
Thank you so much! Your comment made my year! It’s so wonderful to get to know people like you. I’m very excited about the coming year and hope to hear from you often. Have a very merry Christmas and s blessed new year to come!
SO surprising to see Bernie in the video. I loved his book and some of the stories were just crazy.
@@MikeM91320 I wanted to make sure he was featured prominently! Thanks for watching!
@@JonBlackstone Well done, brother!
This song reminds me of me. Been alcohol free since 2013 but I must've made a lot of people sick during the 40 years or so ( 73- 13) that i drank on a daily basis. Lost many friends. Will never be the same. They were my drinking buddies, but they all seem to be okay. I wouldn't be able to socialize and watch them drink anyway.
Thanks for listening and thanks for sharing your own story. I hope you have a good holiday season and a blessed new year ahead.
These were great shows we watched religiously every Christmas in the 70s. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. In the cartoon category, Charlie Brown Christmas is still the gold standard. In the category of really hilarious bad movies, Santa Claus Conquers The Martians. 😂
I agree with every word. I still watch them religiously every year. And Charlie Brown Christmas is my absolute favorite. I’ve never heard of that film and I’m going to watch it right now! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this Jon, I would have loved to have known you at this time in my life! Your recollections stir so many of my own memories that I haven't thought about in a long time. There was a kid in my class in 1977 who dressed up for Halloween as his own version of Darth Vader. He was overjoyed when his costume won first prize, but cried when he found out they thought he was a welder. To be fair, he did look like a welder. Glad yours worked out so much better.✌
😂😂😂 why did he look like a welder? That’s not what I was expecting 😆. Thank you for sharing your story and thank you for the kind words. The coolest part about making these videos is hearing from people like you; who mirrored the experiences I had at the time.thanks again. I really appreciate you sharing! And thank you for the laugh.
@@JonBlackstone 😂Really just one of those things that makes sense when you see it. Like how without the mask he looked like Tom Waits. I kind of wish I still knew him just for that.😄
Jon, I enjoyed this immensely! My 1977 Star Wars experience really was unlike anything else in my life, and to this day, that original film remains my standout favorite of the bunch. Looking forward to the rest of your story!
I feel the exact same way. The first film has a quality that none of the other films has. The first film could easily stand up against films like the Godfather, Lawrence of Arabia, 2001 space Odyssey, etc. Every other film after that had more of a glossy commercial Hollywood in the 80s kind of look to it. Anyway, thanks for watching and thanks for sharing!
@@JonBlackstone "That none of the other films has." Yes! Words out of my own mouth. The vibe, the aesthetic, the sensibility, the pacing. Like lightning in a bottle... pretty much everything that Star Wars has ever been to me is in that film.🤩
@@BarefootPeasant I couldn’t agree more. One time I watched with my son and we freeze framed on every different shot. Each one was like a beautiful painting (except for the “special edition” CGI scenes which looked completely out of place).
My brother & I recorded sound effects for the cantina aliens after watching the making of Star Wars! I love Ben Burt. Great footage of your visit to Hollywood & obsession!
That’s awesome! The making-of documentary was so inspiring! I’m such a huge Ben Burt fan! I still remember how excited we were that the “making of“ was going to be on television! It was the first chance to see behind the scenes of our favorite movie. Do you still have any of your recordings? If you could find them, I can tell you firsthand. It’s a thrill to listen to your younger self.for sharing your story!
He played with "The Buddy Miles Band" in my High school gym in '76. Not as bad as it sounds, my high school was in the middle of a University and we used same gym for games.
You might find this hard to believe, but I am 62 years old and have never seen any of the Star Wars movies, I just was never into it even during it's 70's debut. Oh well to each his own.
Thanks for the video. What about the Empire Strikes Back? Did you not like it?
It wasn’t that I didn’t like “empire“. My heart was captured by music by that time. So I went off of Star Wars and went into the Beatles. I became a musician and continue to this day. Having said that, I never thought Empire was anywhere near the film the first was. It’s a great movie but it doesn’t have the traditional classic vibe of the first. I don’t know if that makes sense or not? Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing!
What a band. Shame the 4 of them weren’t recognised widely as a band, as that’s what they were. Not just an artist and a few backing blokes.
Precisely! I have an episode that is dedicated to observing their incredible work in the recording studio. Thanks for watching!
Nigel and Dee were (as usual) amazing on this.
I know! While editing this video I listen on AirPod Pros and the bass and drums are incredible. The track is incredible. Thanks for watching!
@@JonBlackstone and interesting that Nigel was shown playing guitar at various points because he was originally a guitarist in Plastic Penny if I'm not wrong before he took over drums?
@@johnnymongrel I always assumed they were switching instruments to be funny. Elton is on bass for a moment and on drums in the original video (I didn’t use that shot in my edit). And I think someone else is at the piano at one point? I might be imagining that. 😎 I assumed Nigel played drums in his first band but you may be right? I don’t know anything about his stuff before Elton except the stint he and Dee did with Spencer Davis.
@@JonBlackstone The way I heard it he knew a few chords on guitar but sat in on drums when the drummer didn't turn up one night. The rest, as they say, is history. Incidentally, he also dabbled with Roger Hodgson at the formation of Supertramp.
Wait...he suspected Yoko would be a disappointment?? What was he thinking?
I wonder what he was paid for his contributions.
8:00 Norms rudoolph song lol
They were already old pros after their years in Hamburg.
I was 14 when this came out. The year of my first serious suicide attempt. I loved it so much, I used to fall asleep singing along quietly, crying myself to sleep. I wondered if I was gay because I liked the song. I'm not (not that there's anything wrong with that.) It was a song about someone who was used & abused, lonely and sad on the inside, no matter what it seemed on the outside. I could relate to that. To this day, it remains in the top 10 (5?) on my Suicide Playlist. What? Doesn't everyone have one of those?
This is outstanding! . . . Sounds like you and I had very similar reactions, AND very similar acting out with our obsessions with Star Wars. . . Down to even creating our oun movie theater at home and making our oun soundtrack. Mine, however, was a playback of the Last Battle music from the first Star Wars vinyl album, and my friends and I recorded ourselves re-voicing the Death Star attack with our own ad-libs. . . Lol. . . I still own that 40-some year old recording to this day. . . This project of yours is great!! Can't wait for the next episode!
Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing your own story! I would absolutely love to hear that recording! Did I understand correctly? You had the super eight version? Or did you make a hand made version of the last battle? I would love to share your story on this channel.and recording.
Well that was a fun look back at another time when life seemed more innocent with then a cut to you and the long 80's hair and a wishful (?) look...or...thanks for all the great videos this year both our fav artists and your old movies.
Thank you for watching and thank you for the very kind words. There’s a really interesting story to this shot. I was on a beach in Santa Monica right after I left Seattle heading for Nashville. I was alone; playing my guitar and singing a song I had just written “The Great I Am”. At this moment I stopped playing so I could watch the sun going down. I was marveling at the beauty of God’s creation; filled with joy over the door of opportunity God had opened for me. Have to say, I get a bit misty-eyed watching these trips of yours down nostalgia lane. Great Elvis impersonation.
Wow what a great thing to hear. As you can probably tell I have great affection for nostalgia. Thank you.
Very enjoyable trip down your memory lane. We are same age, so I relate to it. Unfortunately we didn’t have a kid like you on our block. Even the way you put this together underscores your skills as a filmmaker. You must have considered film school at the time? Your SW overdubs are hilarious. It was the greatest era to be a kid. Speaking of sci-fi films of that era, we got pretty obsessed with Rollerball (1975). It was one of the first serious dystopian movies that left a lasting impression. It was panned by the critics, but I thought James Caan was the messiah. Same sort of experience with Death Race 2000, released that same year. They were both restricted so I didn’t see them until they appeared on late night TV a couple years later. And of course Soylent Green. These were serious films with serious social statements.
I appreciate the kind words and it’s great to find fellow kids of that era! For some reason “Rollerball” gave me a weird feeling. I never saw the movie; but the trailers in the theater had a dark vibe that made me a little afraid if it. Very similar to the vibe I felt about The Exorcist. Now that you mention Rollerball I wanna finally watch it! The ‘70s was the greatest decade for movies no doubt about it. Godfather, Jaws and Star Wars impacted culture like never before. Thank you for noticing the craftsmanship I put into these videos. I had dreams of being a filmmaker but music grabbed my heart by the time I was 16. But I’ve always continued doing some kind of film or video work. There’s nothing I love more than producing these videos. I just love the process. It’s like going on a journey. Hey I hope you have an excellent Christmas and happy new year ahead!
@ Yes, Rollerball was a very dark film, hard to watch the first time, but at the same hard to not watch. The period between ‘74 - ‘76 was a dark time in my life, for reasons I won’t get into, but I found a very strange solace in those films, maybe it was affirming or reflecting what I was feeling at the time. My favourite James Caan picture (apart from Godfather, of course), was The Gambler, which I discovered a few years after its release. What a performance. And to you, sir, a happy Christmas and continued success with your passion projects on this channel.
Wow! Thank you Jon! This is turning out to be a really cool deep dive. There are many things I haven't thought about for a long long time and I know you've stirred up a lot of memories for me. Having access to a good camera like that as a young man certainly has given you a keen eye. I know this kind of thing doesn't fall together on its own. Thank you so much for putting all your time into making really cool content. Very merry, tis the season, happy hollandaise, may your eggs be the Benny of your choosing. 👍
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate the kind words. And I appreciate the laughter too! The end of your comments reminded me of something but I can’t put my finger on it. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and blessed new year to come!
remiss* you idiot
Keith. A wise man indeed.
Awwwwwwwww! Rest in peace!
That's right next door to statutory rape. Like the Benny Mardonis song about a 16 year old.
Visually, it’s in the same league as Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Xmas special was a crass debasement of its magnificence and cinematic importance.
I couldn’t agree more. The first Star Wars (I refuse to call it A New Hope) is an amazing film that stands up against any of the great cinematic masterpieces. It’s far and away the best film of that franchise; particularly because it was before Star Wars became a franchise.
It's better than the Acolyte
Wow you’re right! It’s actually better than that awful abomination.
Great channel !! My freind... Thanks
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Interesting- makes sense
The old home memories of Christmas past
I get a warm fuzzy feeling everytime I watch these old films. There’s a visceral quality that transports me. 😎
@ oh I bet - family memories and members long gone but hold such a special place especially at Christmastime
Lennon mocking the disabled. Nasty eh ?
No he wasn't... Obviously you don't have a sense of humour....
@paulmarsh8974 explain what he was doing then . He's done it a few times....nothing to do with humour.
Hate to disagree, but John was definitely mocking the disabled. Let’s not pretend that John was an angel. He definitely had a nasty streak to him.
@MichaelWarchol thx..what people don't seem to realise is..there were two sides to John Lennon..his musical side, which has no equal, and his personal side which was awful. Look how he treated his own son !..and Cynthia ! and the cutting things he sang about his mate, Macca. I really believe he would have ended up in prison if he hadn't had such musical talent. Even his first electric guitar was stolen off of somebody ! So people need to open their eyes and realise there were two sides to the maestro!
Calm down RETARDED SNOWFLAKE ❄️😤❄️ 😂😂😂😂
How could we find out the answer? How about someone asking Elton?
Crap.. I just realized Super Dave is Marty Funkhauser..
Nice edit!
I'm glad you like it! I had a lot fun putting it together. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for making this great edit!

I’ve been on a Randy Meisner kick lately, so if you have any performances to share of him or the Eagles when he was with them, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks for watching! I don’t have anything that’s not already available. Randy played with Poco. If you haven’t already you should check out that stuff too. I absolutely love his vocals!
@ yeah, the Eagles really screwed up when they ran him off. His vocals were everything in that band. He was the best of the best and supposed to be such a sweetheart, too. I never got to see the Eagles. I was still a bit too young.
