    Unfortunate circumstances got me interested in 1911s (magazine bans). But I have to say, these are really nice guns. Maybe not the most practical or technologically advanced thing in the world, but there's something about shooting an American cartridge out of an American platform from an American manufacturer. Great video, thanks for all of the closeups.

    Good video. I have to mention two things. First, the frame and slide are not MIM, they are investment cast, which is a manufacturing process that Ruger has done for decades and are masters at. It is a major factor in how they have been able to keep prices down on their products. Also, and this is a HUGE improvement over one of the inherent 1911 weaknesses, is that the plunger tube is not staked, it is part of the actual frame. Plunger tubes loosening over time and use is a common issue, but Ruger eliminated that issue. A big bonus in my eyes. We have an SR1911 in our collection and it too has been great. Love the black powder loads!! Just found your channel and like what I see. Now off to your 460 Rowland vids. Thanks.

      No, they not cast. They machined them on the SR1911. They found out it was actually faster and cheaper, to machine them, as opposed to casting them.

      The frame and most internal parts are either cast or MIM. The slide and barrel (along with barrel bushing) are machined from bar stock. This information can be easily found by google on multiple websites :)

    i'd recommend for those of you who dissasemble 1911's like this to try doing it differently. try doing it like a glock, dont mess with the bushing, just pull the slide back to the takedown notch, take out the slide stop, keep 4 fingers under the slide as you remove it to keep the spring in the slide, and just remove the spring, guide rod, plug. then you can take the barrel and bushing out as one piece. put it back together the reverse order. much much quicker. it's how some of the best pistol builders do it when they're constantly diss/ass guns while building.

    Love it! I’ve had mine for years now. Only put a couple hundred rounds through it. But zero failures so far. The first rounds through it were inexpensive aluminum case Blazer and it ate them all. First shots were in Idaho and my buddy was so impressed with it he was considering getting one. He was a weapons specialist in Iraq and he owns a Kimber 1911. Was questioning selling the Kimber and getting the Ruger. I’m now searching for a smaller carry piece and there are endless options/calibers. But I do like the new Ruger officer 1911 in .45.

    I've had my SR1911 since 2011, 670-0xxxx. Accurate and fun. I'll never let this one go. This one will be an heirloom to be passed down. Very nice review and view of how you live with this pistol. It's difficult to be sure there's a difference on video, but I believe the Ruger logo is etched much deeper, darker on my first run SR1911, it's very visible. All my etching looks much darker on my version, black on silver, including "RUGER MADE IN THE USA" on the left side. Also "45 AUTO" is roll stamped on my pistol's barrel hood like many other pistols I own. Ruger must've changed that on later runs.
    I enjoyed your take on this gun.

    Nice review. I got my SR1911 in 2015 and shoot it weekly the range. Usually 100 rounds. It was super tight new and broke in now with over 5000 rounds though it. It always goes to the range along with my Glock model 23. I love them both. Both are reliable and highly accurate. I paid $673 when it was on-sale. I carry my Glock for EDC, more ammo in the mag. I like the finish on the SR1911 as it shows virtually no wear and still looks new when clean. I got the Ruger brand 1911 because I own other Rugers and happy with them.

      There is no logical reason to be concerned with the mechanical aspects of a external hammer sidearm versus one that utilizes an internal hammer or a striker design. If the mechanics of the firearm are safe (as in they function properly and not so light in engagement surfaces that the lightest bump or smack will trip them) and you are carrying in a holster that encloses the trigger in a way nothing can interface with the trigger when holstered, there is no possibility of a discharge.
      It is just as arguable that a 1911 pattern firearm is “safer” for carry than something like a Glock pattern pistol because it has a mechanical thumb safety that locks out the trigger mechanism and the latter doesn’t. Neither is safer, they are dangerous tools that are only as safe or dangerous as the user.
      Do as you see fit for sidearm carry, no judgement, but do take note that you are making a decision based on a feeling and not the reality of your firearms mechanics.
      Now, if you are discussing size and weight constraints versus ergonomics and capacity factors as to why you would not carry a 1911, that is a very valid point.
      My typical every day carry is a Springfield Hellcat Pro with a red dot and TLR-7 pistol light in a Werkz M6 holster. I choose it 9/10 times for concealed carry as it loses nothing for me and has ample capacity, shootability, size, accuracy, dependability and intuitive controls for which I have trained thousands of rounds on. But, I still carry other handguns from time to time just because, even if they do not make as much since as the modernized and highly efficient option.
      So, my point is make the choices you see fit and live happy, just know when you make an emotional versus logical decision…. And most importantly, be trained and ready.
      Have a blessed day and thanks for watching!

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel  Рік тому +3

      I'm sorry to hear that you have had a poor experience with your SR1911. I have not seen or read of many issues with the SR1911 series, but like any mass produced item they can have their lemons. The only issues ever encountered with my SR1911 have been when tuning a .460 Rowland conversion kit and with cheap, poorly made magazines. Magazines for the 1911 can vary enough that you are bound to find some that will not agree with your specific 1911. I have found the Kimber, Colt, and Sig magazines to be the best performers overall for my SR1911, using both 45 ACP and 460 Rowland.
      In a 1911, stove pipes are most commonly associated with low power ammunition, "limp wristing", or excessive action spring tension. Failures can also sometimes occur if a magazine is overloaded or has very high spring tension and that upward force retards the slide, robing it of the energy it needs to strike the brass on the ejector hard enough to clear the ejection port. Being that it was a brand new firearm, I am sure it will be corrected by Ruger. I would give it a second chance with quality magazines and a round count minimum of 100 rounds before giving up on it. Believe it or not you have just about the same chance of a lemon in a Springfield 1911 as you do a Ruger, Kimber, Remington, or other in the $1,200 or less price range.
      When you say that the rear sight came apart, what do you mean? Did the stop post (Allen screw in the center of the NOVAK pattern sight) come loose and allow the sight to drift in the dove-tail? Even then the dovetail fitment should be very tight and prevent drifting...

    I bought the commander the year they 1st came out I only have maybe 250 rds through it she’s super tight snappy and shoots high mines is extremely built well mines doesn’t rattle like most. I couldn’t find out if they handle “plus P” I really like core bond

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel  3 роки тому +2

      The SR1911 can handle "+P" loads, but you may want to increase the action spring tension by a pound or two to accommodate for the higher recoil impulse and combat excessive slide velocity as well. If you really want to run hot 45 ACP based loads out of an SR1911, you can always purchase a "+P+" or 45 Super barrel as a "drop-in" solution.
      Converting to .460 Rowland is also an option, even with the commander variants. Do be mindful, however, that on using a "+P+", 45 Super, or 460R barrel conversions you will want to swap out the light titanium OEM firing pin for a heavier steel Series 70 one such as those from CMC, WC, or others, or an extra-weight firing pin from Rowland. This will mitigate or eliminate firing pin drag on the higher pressure cartridges. This will however delete the "drop-safe" nature of the lighter weight firing pin in the Ruger's Series 70 design, so it is something to be mindful of. IMO though, the "safety" of the Series 80, Series 90, and Kimber firing pin block designs do minimal to assist in “safety” and only add complication to the premise of "don't be a numb-nuts and drop your damn gun!"
      If you are carrying a handgun, secure it in a quality holster with secure retention (IE, you can jump, twist, turn, and run and the MF'er is not coming out of the holster). BUT, that is just my 2 cents.
      Thanks for watching and the comment, Me Clay!

    My dad bought me this SR1911 as a gift for my first gun for Christmas. F***ing amazing gun. I love it! I’ve already sent 100 rounds through it at the range. Because I don’t know much about this thing, at what point should I clean it? After each range visit or after a certain amount of rounds fired? I didn’t watch the entire video so I apologize if you mentioned this

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel  4 роки тому +2

      Cleaning regiments depend entirely on the user’s needs and the condition of the pistol after use. If it is going to be depended on for defense, I would recommend a minimum of a wipe down after every range session and a detailed clean every 300-500 rounds. Use each wipe down and detailed clean to check critical components for excessive ware or damage.
      The SR1911 is a great handgun and very dependable, but it is still a very refined 109+ year old design that is not up to the same snuff as more contemporary ones as to when it comes to reliability without cleaning in high round counts. So just keep that in mind when considering your own cleaning regiment for your new pistol. I have seen 1911 pattern handguns go thousands of round with little to no maintenance and never stutter. But I have also seen them choke in less than 500 due to tight tolerances.
      As a note to maintenance of your new pistol:
      1) Remember to change the action spring every 2,500 to 4,000 rounds. I recommend wilson combat, ed brown or sprinco as upgrades to the OEM. Sprinco springs will increase the round count life of the spring to past the life of the pistol, so solid choice in replacement right there.
      2) magazines will wear out faster than the gun, and their spring sooner than the bodies. I recommend changing out mag springs every 2,000 rounds and replacement of mags carried for defensive use every 4,000 rounds or when necessary. Make sure you check feed lips and followers for damage every time you clean the pistol.
      3) Be sure to buy an extra firing pin, firing pin Spring, action spring, and extractor to keep on hand for future replacement if you plan to run a lot of rounds through the gun. These components are easily maintained and replaced. It never hurts to have spares on hand just like having a spare tire in your vehicle.
      Congrats again on your new handgun! Should you have any questions or concerns that go beyond the help I can provide through the comments, feel free to email me at:

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel  2 роки тому

      There will be no reason why it cannot utilize the Federal load. You will need to test the pistol and your magazines for reliability with the selected ammunition. Never assume a specific load or bullet type will or will not work based on what someone says on the internet. Test it yourself and confirm the truth of the matter. I will add, that a properly built 1911 using high quality magazines will cycle most loads and bullet profiles VERY reliably; I have had little to no trouble with truncated-cone profile bullets like the hydrashok in my SR1911 using the factory Ruger magazines, Kimber mags, and Colt Mags.

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel  5 років тому +1

      The frame is Created with Ruger’s standard process of Investment Casting. So you’re right in that it’s not MIM. I must have had that term stuck in my head. There is a difference, obviously, between the MIM and IC components in the SR1911, but for all intents and purposes it means the same thing to buyers.

      @@mollyknaur3894 That will almost certainly be a magazine issue. I have had no problems with my Ruger OEM mags regarding feeding, however it is completely possible to get a lemon. Try to isolate which magazine(s) caused an issue and set them aside. I highly recommend utilizing Colt (7 rounds), Sig (7 or 8 rounds), Kimber (7 or 8 rounds), or Mecgar brand (7 or 8 rounds) 1911 magazines.
      I have used these brands in several 1911's and had NO feed malfunctions with any of them in standard pressure 45 ACP, 45 ACP +P, and 460 Rowland loads ranging from 185 grains to 260 grains. I have, however, had issues with a 10 round CMC magazine with some ammunition in my Ruger SR1911, but had no issues in a standard model Kimber or a Kimber ProCarry II. Magazines matter, and quality mags are nothing to skimp on.
      Polishing your feed ramp may also help. Watch your bullet profile as well; certain magazines may not present sharply truncated bullets or very blunt bullets to the feed ramp properly.
      I hope this helps.

    • @AmericanArmsChannel

      It functions reliably with all ammunition types regardless of bullet profile. The critical factor is magazines. Trash and cheap mags will give it some hiccups, and so has the CMC 10 round mag. Quality Ruger, Sig, Colt, and Kimber mags have been 100% with hollopoints in both 45 ACP and 460 Rowland.

    I have a current offer i'm considering, someone wants to trade me my AR build for a ruger sr1911. I have about the same amount of money invested in the build as a used sr1911 is worth. My only hesitation is that it's my only rifle, and i'm a married man on a budget, with children. I've always loved both Ruger and 1911s, and don't currently own either one of them. THat said, i'm pretty paranoid that by the time i will have saved up enough money to buy an AR or build one, the Democrats will have succeeded in banning them. Any advice on what I should do? I should also consider that while i've always wanted an SR1911, they're less likely to be made illegal than an AR 15.

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel  5 років тому +8

      Keep your rifle. That’s my recommendation in that situation. Invest in ammo and supplies.
      You can always get a good PSA kit rifle or pistol for less than $400, but I would not deprive you and your family of a rifle for the gain of a single handgun.
      In regards to worrying about a ban and what guns will be “safe” from a ban, I have 3 statements to make:
      1) take your firearms on regular boating trips
      2) Free men do not ask for permission
      3) Sic Semper Tyranus
      Keep your powder dry.

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel  3 роки тому +1

      No, the SR1911 is considered a Series 70 pattern 1911. The Series 70 updated the 1911A1/Colt Gov. Model pattern pistol with some minor tweaks to production methods and components, but the largest change Colt attempted to market was a collet style barrel bushing, but not all models were equipped with this component. This collet bushing was eliminated in the Series 80, but a firing pin block safety was added to the trigger mechanism and the firing pin and firing pin channel modified to accommodate. In 1991 the Series 90 was introduced which made additional modifications to the Series 80's, but it is not a preferred model when compared to the 70 and 80 series.
      Generally, when referring to modern production 1911's, a model with no firing pin block safety is considered a Series 70, while one that has one is considered a Series 80. Only actual Colt Gov. Model M1911's or M1911A1's and their "retro" or reproduction facsimiles that copy them are considered "pre-Series 70". The SR 1911 being a modernized rendition of the Colt Government Model without a firing pin block safety is considered a series 70 pattern 1911.

They go into convulsions about how expensive they are and cry I cant do it than they go out and buy several cheapo junk guns like the Ruger SR 1911. Like from all that money you spent on all that garbage you could of gotten the Dan Wesson in the first place! People are cheap weirdos that make no sense but whatever its there money your talking about the same people that buy a lifted truck but barley support there family.

      Weird Flex, but ok...
      It sounds like you have a problem with people doing as they wish with their money and not what you want them to do. I'm not sure what happened, but where did the Ruger SR1911 hurt you? Come on, show us on the doll, you're safe here.
      Honestly man, just buy what you want/think is best and let others make their own choices. And btw, from my evaluation and personal experience shooting, carrying, adding a 460 Rowland conversion barrel, and lightly tuning the SR1911 (as well as reports from many other who have owned and used the model heavily), it is not a "junk-gun". In fact, it is far from a junk gun; it works, is easily serviced, and is ready to accept all the aftermarket parts and smithing your heart could desire for a price that offers great value to the market.
      The Dan Wesson products are quality products and I've never heard a complaint about them other than the price. But again, personal decision on what financially makes the most sense for each person.
