Super Mario Sunshine is full of frustrating, rage-inducing challenges. And near the top of that list is the Pachinko Machine star. Underneath the bridge in Isle Delfino is a challenge that angered players as they tried to navigate its unfair landscape. But what makes the Super Mario Sunshine Pachinko Machine unfair? Let's take a look... and then let's make it worse!

So in conclusion, if this machine didn't have the forced momentum, it would have been fine? Anyway, neat video! Thanks for uploading!
I had no idea about the forced momentum thing, so I knew this video would be very helpful in understanding why the level pained me so.
you still have the wonky pin mechanics, but they're dealwithable.
It would have been too easy. If your fludd gets taken away and you didn’t have the massive gravity in there , then it would be reasonable.
It would be much better. Still not great, but better.
All it needs is a very short timer, or a set path for mario to take that more matches the curve of the top
I never was really bothered by the Pachinko Machine, It drained lifes sure, but its never taken more than 10 minutes. I think it overshadows the true worst level, the Lliy Pad Ride to Hell
Came here to say anyone who has 100% knows the lilly pad is satan's playground haha
L i l l y p a d
EXACTLY.
At least with the Pachinko machine you are aware of how you're going to die.
With the Lily pad ride, you don't know the water is poisonous, aside from the sign. You've been conditioned to know that Water is your friend, because it's been your primary tool of use.
So if you fall in, your expectation would be to swim back up and ty again.
Plus, there's that pipe, you'd expect it to take you back to the start, but instead it would take you back to Isle Delphino, which means the whole yoshi sequence would have to be redone.
@@Tobunari that moment with the pipe is possibly the cruelest trick in the whole series 😭😭
Are you guys for real??? This is so much worse than Lilly pad
Any obscure mechanics behind the lily pad ride? Or does all the pain radiate from obvious places?
"Thats enough sunshine for one day" one of the best quotes ive ever heard, nice
Pro tip: pull your joystick far right for the top middle, far right and hover nozzle for top right, pull to the left for top left and bottom left(depends when you start pulling), stop in between top middle and top right with hover then pull to the right for bottom right, don’t touch anything to get middle sprite
The reason I suffered so much on this level before seeing this video was the fact that i entered it with the rocket fludd pack which is essentially useless and made this kevel impossible
I genuinely thought the bed stuff was a shitpost/meme, it was that smooth.
“And how can we make it worse?”
Dear god no, please no
I always just kept to the railing and used the hover nozzle on the lilly pad level. That is, after many attempts and dying countless times.
I'm also surprised you didn't talk about why the pins suck so much!
I always thought it was an invisible wall or something.
the machine does crazy things. Even if you have infinate water/floating cheats
I only ever beat this stage by cheesing it, I dont plan to change that
Oh the lily pad level is definitely WAY worse than the pachinko level. You didn't just get lucky, the pachinko isn't THAT hard, it's just really frustrating and makes you want to quit the level.
both the lily pads and Pachinko were easy for me.
It took me so freaking long to get that sprite in my playthough on Switch. Mario Sunshine definitely hasn't aged well. Here's hoping that Mario Galaxy is better.
I had mire trouble with this than with the lily pads.
I can do Pachinko Machine and the Lilly Pad level without the Hover Nuzzle, people are just bad imo
Never heard of this level never played very far I suck at Mario games the first one I ever finished was odyssey
pah-CHINKo machine
I actually managed to figure this out as a kid. Well, the part about needing to wait for the launch sequence to finish, anyway. Didn't know it was tied to your X coordinate in addition to landing. But it was never more than a minor annoyance for me after the first few attempts.
I believe that maybe someone else, maybe himself, uploaded a video explaining exactly how the pinball machine works in the game. I believe that I saw it somewhere on UA-cam. They probably knew already that it cause a lot of trouble for players, even in the future.
I finally played it not long ago, it wasn't that bad tbh, but I wondered why the controls were wack sometimes. I noticed the beginning force and how weird it was, so I played with it to get the coins. Didn't know the force covered the entire left side though, I just thought it was a side effect of being in the air after getting pushed. This makes more sense!
Yeah the trick is to not fight the physics. The laucher itself will never send you to your death
@@pickk90 Right, I had to play with it to get the feel for it. Was weird, but it worked. I'm interested to see how the other hard levels play, if they're overexaggerated, underexaggerated, or spot-on
Probably other people knew about it pretty quickly but did not feel like saying anything. If they did say anything about it, they commented it on completely other videos not even related to the correct subject matter like I have been doing recently.
Yeah I thought the same, too. Sure I died a couple times but I eventually let my self land on those pole things and I would jump to the two red coins on either side of me, and a few attempts at getting the rest of the coins and I beat the level.
God the pachinko machine still haunts my subconcious to this day
Yeah I always knew there was something really bizzare about the way Mario behaved coming off that launchpad so I'm so glad you explained it! It's all just so unnecessarily frustrating.
I've never played through all of Sunshine so whenever I saw people playing this level, I could never understand why they had so much trouble. It makes much more sense now knowing that it forces you into the center of the machine.
Keeps you there too😊
Imagine being bold enough to call this the most frustrating level when the lilypad level exists.
Personally the lily pad was more tedious than frustrating to me as when my sister and I played the lilypad level we got the coins and just walked along the side bar to the Shine Sprite.
Took a while but it’s preferable to this stage.
The Pachinko level was worse in my opinion, because I couldn't even tell what I was doing wrong thanks to the forced momentum. At least with the lilypad level I could pinpoint where things fucked up each time.
The lilypad was "more difficult" and more stupid in design in that the water just kills you instantly (they could've at least shown an electric wire or something in the water), but with that one, if you miss, you can theoretically save yourself using the sides of the track. The pachinko machine, you drop to your death. But getting over TO the LilyPad stage was evem more tedious, which makes it even more frustrating.
I said this to another comment already but it bears repeating here.
Just walk on the sides slowly and hover over to a red coin then grab the ledge on the opposite end. If you're really scared about walking off just hang on to the ledge and shimmy your way over till you're near a red coin. It's so freakin easy. (Obviously this doesn't apply for speedrunners so those guys get a pass to say Lily pad is hard but even then it's really not that difficult if you understand basic momentum.)
At least Lily pad works
I remeber coming back to this game after years and realizing you can wall jump after the jump to make collecting the red coins way easier
Wow. So this helps so much with learning how the screwed up mechanics in this level actually work so they can be used to my advantage now. Thanks so much! I've always wanted a real explanation for how it works.
So it literally is just bad design. I freaken knew it.
I love how he needs a bed for two people. Swanky and Box.
leave it to swankybox to scientifically and logically explain how and why the pachinko machine sucks and then use that knowledge to make it as outrageous as possible
There is no other way that it can possibly be explained any simpler unless you read what the statements are surrounding the creation of the pinball machine as explained by the game level designers. Their explanation makes perfect sense as you are reading It as well. I believe that he found the explanation, and tried to explain it as best as he could. I believe that he already partly planned out the video content in advance, minus other content included after the fact.
As a kid, I beat this easily. As an adult, no thank you.
I get it, though in some cases this can vary by game and genre. Trying SSU after a few years was TERRIBLE.
The game creators made sure that a certain launch path was programmed into the game to allow anyone to beat it, even years later after stopping from playing it.
Pachinko stage isn’t as hard as the other infamous levels in sunshine. But thats mostly because I made 2 levels that are basically sequels to this stage in smm2 like 2 years ago.
Maybe this is a strange takeaway, but I like your thumbnail lol. I just think the SMG Mario skull on top of SMS Mario is pretty clever!
I eid this level easly by using the Rocket Nozzle in my second playtrough, I spammed jumps and did it pretty easly.
It's even easier to get to the level, just time a jump out of the water with the rocket jump.
Surprisingly a lot of lets players don't use the rocket nozzle that much like in Bianco Hills when there getting the red coins. I don't know why considering it makes some of the missions easier
@@Dashiell777 I thought rocket was how you were SUPPOSED to get in, and I always assumed it was a lot easier to have hover nozzle in most challenges since it gives you fine-tuned control... but in this one, control is out the window.
@@KairuHakubi well other let's player's don't use it even if they fall of trying to get the red coins they just cut until they get the red coins which doesn't make sense
@@Dashiell777 wanna try that again
@@KairuHakubi what do you mean
Yeah, That level is one of the hardest level I've played 😅
I always found it more frustrating than hard. Just like the perfect run
There's a switch on the console that solves this level every single time without fail.
The Power Button.
Instructions unclear. Super Mario Sunshine turned off and the save data got corrupt, also Luigi is playable. Help me
It's weird, I loved that level. I also love the mine car levels in DKC, so I'm just weird I guess. I also like pinball and pachinko in real life though, so that might be why.
Idk, but this level was always a riot for me. I loved seeing Mario just drop to his death and bonk his head after get shot out.
The level would be SO much better if the launch finished after the initial ramp, and did NOT forced push you halfway across the machine.
Someone mod this please.
I believe that they purposely intended for the pinball machine to do that when Mario gets launched into the air. They already apologized in advance if caused any problems for people playing the game. They might have tried other launch patterns when designing it, but Mario kept on clipping through the pinball machine; I believe.
Hey Swanky, i was wondering If you could make a Video about the Beta room in the Delfino Airstrip.
In case you don't know what i mean, If you use rocket storage near the tower at the Airstrip for about 3 to 4 Times you'll see a room stored above the room you find a Blue and Red coin When you revisit the area.
YAY MORE SUNSHINE
It's weird you mentioned remembering the pachinko machine being easy as a kid, since I remember it that way too. I also used the Jet nozzle instead of the hover nozzle though, which I've never seen anyone else try. I remember if you jump and use the Jet nozzle before you land back on the springboard launcher, it gives you just enough height to grab the ledge at the launcher's mouth, and from there you can just jump into the left side pockets without wonky momentum.
That said I only remember doing this because of this video, I should try it again, and see if it holds true. Maybe the frustration just comes from playing with the wrong nozzle, or maybe I just have the making of a VG Creepypasta.
All the people saying "AcTuAlLy ThE pAcHiNkO lEvEl WaSn'T tHaT bAd" can go drown in lilypad water.
I have never had problems with the pachinko machine.
I've died a few times over the years sure. But I've died the same amount to other levels.
I'd say it's on par with the Lilly pad shine that you have to escort yoshi to.
ngl i literally never touched the game again after this level, pissed me off too much
People STILL don't believe me when I say Pachinko is a form of gambling in japan and not a racial slur.
Hated the Pachinko sooooo much! 🥲
New way to worsen it: make the force force you straight to the opposite end of the machine instead of middle!
I'm with SwankyBox on having more issues with the Lilypad level than Pachinko. I will give it a close second however
Yeah, I figured out the stupid momentum thing affecting the left half of this machine very early on in my attempts at it. Also, strangely enough, I have never died to this Pachinko Machine. Whenever I was falling towards the drain below, I paused while on the slopes leading to the drain and exited the course. At least it doesn't take very long to get back to the Pachinko Machine, unlike that dumb brown leaf challenge (at least until I learned of the glitch to get Yoshi there much more quickly). And, it only took me 5 tries total to beat the Pachinko Machine.
Thank you Swankybox I always wanted to know why this level had weird physics
You think the level would be more merciful if you were able to refill FLUDD?
This has to be one of the most poorly-designed mechanics of any 3D Mario. It's totally invisible, doesn't abide by any natural logic or reason, and you will quickly die if you don't know what's going on. It looks and feels like a bug.
it is a glitch
I get the left top coin by simply holding left on the analogue stick when launched up, adjusting a bit if needed.
I just recently 100% this game on Switch and while this level is a little frustrating, I didn't really have much of a hard time with it. It's like how people have overblown just how horrible the water temple is in Ocarina of Time. I died like 2-3 times before I completed this level. Yeah, it's a little glitchy but the learning curve isn't hard to figure out either. Now the lily pad level... Fuck that one.
That's a nice ass bed, but I can't afford anything cuz I'm broke. And I'm only 15. Also, I really disliked the stupid lily pad level a lot more than the pachinko machine. I already had figured out that weird pushing wind or whatever that pushes you around by the time I lost a few lives. It was never too bad.
RTgame streamed this recently and he did the pachinko machine in one or two tries. Next day he rage quit just trying to climb to the top of Noki Bay, which I have no problem doing.
This is a strange game.
It is the same case for Super Mario Galaxy as well. The spider boss might be easy for some people and harder for others. There is even a straight direct way of beating him very quickly, before he can even recover, and without taking any damage if you are fast enough. It also might be the reason why the spider boss was being demonstrated to the public(?) at E3 prior to the game being made available for purchase as well. There was crystal clear footage of it being shown that I think I saw on UA-cam.
I think this is the worst-designed level in any Mario game, ever. Why does the camera spin around? How does that do anything but impede your controls?
I remember people complaining about this some 6 years back, but honestly it isn't nearly as bad as its reputation. Same goes for the lily pad, although... less.
Ironically, I just beat the Pachinko machine just the other day when I was playing Super Mario Sunshine on the Switch. Personally I found it only mildly frustrating (the hardest part is getting Mario into the right slot to get the Red Coins without falling out of the machine and issues with using the Hover Nozzle inside the Pachinko machine). Never realized part of the problem was the forced momentum.
Ten years later we finally know what happened to poor Arin.
Dunno.... I beat this one in my first try.
I think the hardest for me was the sand bird...
I played this game again last year and I did notice something funny about the way Mario moved in the air. I’m glad I know the truth now.
thing about the river for me is that if i missed a coin or something i'd just walk along the sides and go from side to side with the hover nozzle...seemingly more effort but it keeps an attempt active rather than having to go back
I've tried that and Mario kept walking of the cliff
@@Dashiell777 you know you can walk slowly right?
@@Mmmeeee4 I've try that and I kept falling fall on 3d all stars
The other coin on the bottom of the machine was ALSO obtainable without using the launch pad, you can wall jump off the back off the machine to hover up there by standing on that non-sloped part.
As many times as I used to beat this level back in the day, I still dread doing it! And the fact that you made it even harder gave me anxiety!🤣 Also, I think the level with the leaf and the poison water is the most annoying in my opinion!
It actually may or may not be the level they were actually talking about putting in directly into the game, but thought it would be too difficult for the average player to be able to complete. They definitely agreed to talk further about the idea later on and possibly maybe preserve it for the future while they were still thinking about it(?) I was definitely doing some through digging on the game, even though we never even had the time to even play it. We never even bought it honestly thinking for some reason that the game did not even exist in the first place. The person playing the game trying to access the pipe(?) was roughly thinking the exact same thought as I was as well. I honestly do not remember where I saw the video at. All I know was that it was 100% honest and truthful. UA-cam is not the only place to upload video content to, and it was not bound to event restrictions to be viewed like the Pokémon Go Fest video that one of the UA-camrs made for Go Fest 2017. I was looking on the person's channel trying to find out more information, and it was not uploaded there at all. It specifically stated directly straight to the point of which types of pokemon to use against them in combat.
YAY MORE SUNSHINE ❤️🌞
Thank you Swanky 😉
One of the most bullshit levels in all of Mario
One of the many reasons I watch SwankyBox is cause he makes smooth transitions from the video and the sponsorship. It’s like we were hit by a smooth criminal
I sort of kind of still remember this level.... memory is kinda grainy/fuzzy though. but I think ONE way to beat this course with relative ease is... DIVING at the red coins! its possible to jump in the bouncy thing while facing to the left. once you reach the top press B to like lunge to the left. please note however... while it is kinda easy, this still DOES take TRIAL and ERROR, but eventually you do get the FEEL of where the landing is gonna be. the one where it should take longest to get with this method is the bottom left. then for the rest, use the hover nozzle as needed. just ALWAYS start with the ones on the left first... that way, if you screw up you wont be losing the effort you had spent getting all of the other coins(not that I even had to mention that... but, well... just so the more you could know).
Also... one interesting fact about that wind enemy. you can squirt it with the default fludd nozzle to make them go away! the BEST way to hit it would just be to zoom look at it then just fire away at it. though.. these enemys don't appear here under normal circumstances, so am not sure if you didn't try it because the game doesn't let you or if you just legit did not know that or not.
I believe that he already knew that already, and actually has content on his other possible channel using the water to defeat them. He also specifically said that he would upload this content for this channel, and leave the other information on the other video talking about the subject matter.
@@joshernsteen2066 So... he just forgot to do that on this video? or.. did he just not do it to make it more challenging? not sure if you would know that, you just seem more informed about this guy than me, lol.
@@TheDeepThinker-sq3iy I am honestly not sure exactly how to respond back to this except for what he clearly explained in the other video and that he was going to eventually create another channel on UA-cam called SwankyBox.
ahh this, i know alot of grumps fans remember this from their mario sunshine episode. arin deffently lost it then
Totally! The reason why Arin died was because of the forced momentum since it wasn't reset by going to the center again. It pushed him forward faster than usual, which then caused his backslide to be accelerated. It's absurd!
Because if the push effect that the machine does, I previously made the conclusion that the machine forces you to the right after jumping on the trampoline. I did not know that the mysterious force wasn’t bound to the trampoline itself, so that was an interesting find.
People always talking about how terrible the Pachinko level is... Has no one played the damn lilypads?! They're impossible to control, take too long and it's death, and it takes 15 minutes to get to the level every time you die.
Maybe not 15 minutes, but it does take far too long (unless you make use of a glitch that I'm glad I learned about). And yes, in my opinion, the brown lily pad challenge is nastier to me than the Pachinko Machine.
Do they have cooling pillows and blankets? I get hot too fast
I was able to cheese that level and took like 2 attempts
I haven't started the video yet, but I know exactly that you are going to talk about rigged physics. I played that level with my cousin, and the hardcoded speed boost was painfully obvious.
IMO, the geeen ones are the easiest to get. Just hold left so the momentum doesnt push you as much to get the left one, then hold right and hover when needed for the one on the right
For me I kinda liked those two shines growing up.... The Secerts though and their boss the rico harbor one... Yeah no those are nonsense as your moves are so limited compiaired to the rest of the 3D mario games and the physics are nuts... angles are random if you slide or not... Yeah by far my most disliked shine in Sunshine... Which is my favoite Mario game by the way.
I haven't played much sunshine as a kid, but whenever someone mentions sunshine or its levels, my mind always comes to this hellish level.
I feel like I'm the only one who never found The Pachinko machine or the lily pad levels hard. I honestly had more trouble finding blue coins then anything.
Please do a video dedicated to that lily pad level the real hell level
Woah, that is pretty intense. Glad that isn’t in the actual level.
5:27 Rest in Sea of Sky, Stu
This level isn't that bad, it only took me like 40 minutes
Maybe it was worse in the original, but I just held all the way left/right with or without fludd to grab most of the coins. I think the players overcomplicate this stage that is meant to be accessible pretty early on.
I love the way he says paCHInko machine
I hate this level... why must you hurt me
Fun Fact: You can actually also cheese the bottom left coin with a well placed spin jump, combined with using Fludd to get in the pocket.
I never really had a problem with the pachinko level, and didn’t know it was a problematic thing until I started seeing all the hullabaloo on the internet near on 20 years later. Maybe I got lucky the few times I played through Sunshine !
I think the biggest problem with this thing is that its inner workings are so obscure, and the actual "ways" around it don't feel like how it should have been designed at all. Having to wall jump against the glass inside of it or "wait for momentum to finish", etc all feel like hacky workarounds and not like actual game design elements. Any normal person would think at first glance that there's something wrong with this level.
I agree that it's not that hard if you're a "gamer" and you think outside of the box to solve this levels' issues, but it still shouldn't have been designed that way. The Lilypad ride to hell though is the worst, I think anyone can agree. Not only is it frustrating but the convoluted path back to it using Yoshi and the boats if you die makes it even worse.
Never had any issues. Easy challenge once you get used to the physics.
The only shine sprite I could never get
There's only one shine in the game that's worse, if you'd 100%ed this game take a guess which one
While the machine was certainly annoying I think I only died to it once, then again I always entered with the rocket nozzle which can really help. Watching you play the customised machine does make me wish the game had crouching (and by extension the backflip) as it would have certainly helped avoid the wind spirits.
Ironically I found the lily pad challenge very doable. I only had to ride yoshi on the boat once, and the challenge itself took 5 tries at most. Plus, I had around 20 lives for backup.
The pachinko challenge definitely feels janky though for the weird momentum property you described lol. I found ways around it by doing that walljump up the trampoline tube so I could keep my base momentum for some of the coins.
The lily pad challenge was designed to be an easy experience if you knew how to steer Fludd well, and avoided the edges of the stage; which caused the Iily pad to pretty much sink. It was talked about by the people who designed the game as well as one of the easier mission to complete in the game if you slow down and take your time. The people who made the game also explained that they purposely designed the layout to try to save the person from playing the game from losing so many life's and to also calm the player down from feeling angry as well. They perfectly knew what they were doing as they were designing the game, and I think that they even knew about Nintendo making wireless controllers in the future as well. They definitely knew that someone else would make a wireless gamecube joy con controller. I know that I saw direct mention of them stating it. The game is party designed with that mind, I think based on what they were saying about it. They also definitely knew that the game would play at easier with using it compared to the other methods that they knew would be released in the future as well.
It is insane how the show creators during the early 2000s knew about the future would be already. They were actually already preparing the Proud Family for the future already with official statements with them talking about the sequel to the show that is coming out on Disney Plus roughly when they said already. They already planned out the start of the series already with the first two of them being episodes that were made for the original show fully finished already, but did not get a lot of attention. I believe that the episode with American Dragon Long combined with Lilo and Stitch, that was made before the show got noticed by everyone, was already explained in full detail by both show creators. I did not want to bother finding out more about it, I think. I believe that I just watched the shows up to that point which explained both of the shows views points, and maybe did not dig up more information regarding it; but I could be slightly incorrect here. I believe it was also intended to be used by people to try to get them to watch the show, if they interested in what they saw as well. That much I knew I was understanding from what I was reading about it. They made 100% sure to arrange the script that particular way, which ironically was how they wanted the episode to end, with the two shows being combined, followed directly by the regular show ending; and the main show location and catchphrase being said of the American Dragon Jake Long. The episodes uploaded to Disney Plus are the trimmed down versions also made during the exact time period that have been around a while now to watch online through very specific websites.
You could have been watching the show at the same exact time you were playing Super Mario Sunshind as a kid. Maybe both the show creators knew about the game, and its influence on the shows views, and already explained somewhere else on the internet. I am very certain that we only watching the show because we did not believe that the game was real, and that the show was infact real. They also made sure that Lilo and Stitch would glue your eyes to the television the moment that you started to watch it as well.
The worst part of this level is that it clearly isn't broken. It's functioning exactly as intended. The only miscalculation was expecting players to accept the hamfisted attempt to make Mario into a pachinko ball.
Game Grumps: Too late. 8 years too late.
Hey, I’ve got a question. What program do you use to record videogame stages in the cinematic way that you do? I’ve been curious about this for a bit, since it’s quite characteristic of your content.
Screw that level if u can’t get it- it’s not needed and should not be the main argument piece of why haters hate my favorite Mario of all time. _you weren’t the even born when this came out Timmy in the back_
Ah yes, the level that made Arin straight-up grab the Mario Sunshine case and break it
I think what people fundamentally don't understand about Mario Sunshine Pachinko is that you should never under any circumstances use FLUDD.
You can get all 8 coins with the following jumps:
1) Neutral jump
2) Launch holding left after clearing the tube
3) Same as (2), but spin
4) Same as (2), but hold right
5) same as (4), but spin
You can entirely avoid landing on pins this way.
