Thank you for making this video. I have always been interested in the anatomy of horses feet. I miss watching the Natural Balance Hoofcare Corner every week on Dennis Reis. It was my favorite part of the show. I just bought a walker who arrived yesterday. He has such underrun heels and long toes that he can't stand properly and although his gait is smooth as silk I know he can't be having fun. I called the farrier but I know it will take time to fix him up. This video will help.
I dont mean to be so off topic but does someone know a tool to get back into an instagram account?? I was dumb lost the password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me!
(8:48) where the bars terminate in healthy hoof should be a straight line from the heel to the apex of the frog...What Gene is teaching you is how to keep a hoof locked comfortably in founder. The reason Gene is teaching terminate the bars is not because he doesn't know it...but because it is very difficult to get straight bars...it involves physical therapy to reduce tension on the flexor muscle which will lengthen and strengthen the stride. If you try to force the bars straight the heel will collapse forward (more underrun) making the horse lame. Gene's method is OK but does not peak the performance of your horse and it puts the trimming into a continuous cycle of overgrowth and correction.
I am very curious about your comment and would really like to know more. Can you please elaborate or point me in the direction of more info? Thanks so much.
@@ANNETE784 not sure there is much more i can tell you without knowing your level of familiarity with hooves. the point i'm trying to make here is that bar deformity is not being corrected, it cannot be corrected by the farrier alone, and therefore the horses are not at peak performance.
Thank you! When I was a child I had ride use of a pony if I fed and watered him.But he always would try to knock me off by going under a tree with low branches. Now I know why!His hooves were overgrown!💓😑
Now ik now why there so many pigeon toed horse out there bad trims and bad shoeing the AFA need to start to address this as there so many horses that are made pigeon toed.

Great tutorial. Love the mathematical references. Tangent line, equidistance etc.

Really informative. Thank you.
Enlightening. Thank you.
Thanks so much.
Great info. thanks. What kind of hoof knife is that? Seems like a good one.
very thorough!

Thank you ¡¡¡¡very tutorial rasp aline to the frog line sounds good ))
Thanks heaps. 😀👍
What measuring tool is he using??? It looks handier than a ruler, especially for measuring a circular surface like a hoof!
That tool is called the JH Forge Hoof Evaluator (Divider). You can find them at www.shopedss.com or www.jhforge.com
at 1:30 there is a stamp on the dog
must be a male dog......lol
Making it much more complicated than it needs to be.
thanks for posting!(europe)
Liked it. Did you learn it professionally?
Am I the only person who tried to flick the fly away???
Yes lol
how do you trim on a front pigeon toed and rear cowhawked horse ? Thank you.
Wow, you don't escape geometry here either...
What is the tool called you used to measure with?
@Sherita Kocke JH measuring guide
What kind of knife are you using here in the beginning as your defining the apex of the frog?
Jh forge
Ugh that fly was so distracting!
I would like to know where he got his marker, because none of mine work that well. LOL

Is there a channel you can recommend that shows a better treatment of the hoof?

Oh yeah?
Lol I made my horse pigeon-toed. Why don't you come out and trim him for me?
Turning everything into brain surgery please !
The frog sheds twice a year, there is nothing wrong with your horse.
dustinjacobs232 they are not claiming their horse has a problem...PLEASE WATCH THE VIDEO your comment doesnt fit the topic of this video...😂😂😂
