Hooves Trimmed on a Gaited Mare with Shedding Frogs

- This mare came to my friend with very upright and long "coke can" looking hooves. Sadly this is very commonly seen in the gaited horse world. Many people believe that having hooves like that makes the horse gait better and have more action. All I usually see are sore horses with hooves that are too long. In my opinion it's the equivalent of humans walking around in flippers or clown shoes all day.
Unfortunately having long hooves like this for a long period of time can cause many compensatory issues in other areas of the body. With this mare we have been fighting a sore lower lumbar and sacro-illiac area. But as her hooves get more and more balanced her back feels better and better.
I hope you enjoy the video of her trim. If you have any questions feel free to ask them below!

It's great to see people prioritize function over flashy movement. The coke can trim is so detrimental to horses longterm.
I hate that that style of trim is so prevalent in the gaited horse world. Trying to change that one horse at a time.
I absolutely love the continued explanations that you offer us throughout the entire trims!
Thank you so much! Glad you liked it!
nice trim, love that you nip the outer wall off vertically, i think doing that is my favorite part cause it makes the foot instantly rounder
lol
Thank you for watching and for your comment! I love a good vertical nip too. Satisfies my OCD lol.
Thank you for explaining why you do what you do as you go along.❤❤❤
Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Absolutely love these videos! Thank you for making them 😊
You are welcome! Thank you so much for watching!
Well done.
Thank you!
Such great info! Thank you, you do such a good job. I’m trying to trim my horses myself weekly. My horse stands with his legs under himself, front and back, I was wondering why..
Thank you for watching and for commenting! First thing I would check is toe length. Lots of horses that stand that way have toes that are too long.
great example trim thanks
Can I ask what you think about Linda Harris /TACT research on heels periople and frog distortion in the caudal hoof ???
I think that method works well for a lot of horses. But is doesn’t work well for all horses. I have yet to find a method that does.
