This scene, like many others in Rudy, hit you multiple times. When the team captain offers his place you get chills. Then as he walks out you see the next player, Mateus, entering and you realize not only the captain is offering this but the entire team. So moving.

The “well I’ll be damned,” look on the coaches face when Rudy gets a sack on the first and only time he lines up. Classic- to not just get into the game, RUDY proved he belonged there with that grasp at his moment.

The Cinematic production of the movie Rudy based on the story of Rudy Ruettiger was one of the two greatest sports themes movies involving the wondrous collaboration between producer-writer Angelo Pizzo and magnificent movie soundtrack creator the late Jerry Goldsmith. The other one of course everybody knows was Hoosiers in 1986. I haven't looked into it but if the Board of Governors for the Oscars or the American Film Institute never gave a Lifetime Achievement Award to Jerry Goldsmith before he passed away it is a major National Crime. Look online and UA-cam and you will see the many wonderful movie scores that he created and orchestrated. He did receive an Oscar for the music of the first Omen movie with Gregory Peck. The movies involve such Productions as Alien (1979); LA confidential( 1997); Papillon( 1973); a Patch of Blue ( 1965); Patton( 1970); the Sand Pebbles (1966l; Star Trek: The Motion Picture; the Wind & The Lion( 1975); Freud( 1962); the Planet of the Apes( 1968); Chinatown( 1974); The Boys from Brazil( 1978); Poltergeist( 1982); Basic Instinct( 1992). According to Wikipedia he received seven Emmy Awards from 1961 to 1995 which included the themes from Thriller in 1961, The Man from Uncle in 1966, the red pony 1973 QBv11; Babe( 1976); Masada( 1981); Star Trek Voyager( 1995). He has a host of other awards for other Productions including the golden raspberry Awards, satellite Awards,. A Wikipedia search shows numerous TV production themes dating back to the 1950s.
Goldsmith who was born February 10th 1929 and died July 21st 2004 was belatedly acknowledged posthumously for a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017. His oldest son Joel Goldberg who died in 2012 also assisted in production with his father.
As admitted by the real Rudy Ruettiger who is an active motivational speaker as well as Sean Astin( actor who played in Rudy and whose father John Astin was a prominent actor playing in the TV series The Munsters. How people can grow up is that Sean Astin played in The Goonies as a young boy in 1985.) It was admitted by both of them in real life that there wasn't such a scene of all the players coming to Dan to Vines office to give their uniforms questing him to be able to be played in the final game against Georgia Tech, however it was verified that there were two players at the time who approached Dan Devine about doing it. As you will recognize the actor playing Dan Devine also played the temporary coach before Normandale played by Gene Hackman came on the scene at Hickory.

I had always suspected that this isn't QUITE white happened, but nevertheless, this scene made me cry. The fact that so many starting players were willing to sit out for the final game of the year because they knew that Rudy deserved to play in at least one game before he graduated, was absolutely beautiful. It's a shame that selflessness such as this is so rare.

When the team captain walks into the head coach's office, there is a pen holder with two pens on the edge of the desk, shown at 0:20. Since laying the jerseys on top of the pen holder would have caused them to tent (instead of lay flat), it is conveniently missing before the jerseys are laid on his desk at 0:45

continuity error.. @ 1:23 #70 (who was actually Steve Niehaus, not what looks like "Borisy") lays his jersey on top of the jersey of #1 "Anderson" (even though #1 in 1975 was Kerry Moriarty..).. three more jerseys pass, then at 1:33 they repeat it #70. ALSO. #21 was Daniel Knott, not "Roland" or whatever.

Most of the movie is based in truth to a great degree except for its depiction of Dan Devine. He wasn't anywhere the asshole they portrayed him to be. He was for Rudy playing. That is major dramatization on their part but still understandable for the flow of the movie and to make people understand that even if a person of power is against you, do not be deterred

    • @ShantyIrishman

Get your facts straight, more than half this movie is based on facts. Yes there was no Pete, and after High School, Rudy actually enlisted and served in the navy.
Plus, Dan Devine was nothing like he was portrayed here. He was actually one of Rudy’s biggest motivators but allowed the film to portray him as an antagonist, to make the film better.

I don't feel that the issue should be so much whether this did or didn't happen; yes, we do want to know that, and it is a legitimate question. However, I think the more important point is that this is what the players could have done, and would have done for Rudy. Perhaps Devine was furious, but he also must take into account that it is a movie and there is fiction mixed in even with movies based on true stories. I have no problem with this not being fully accurate.
