“You’re gonna walk out of here with a Degree from the University of Notre Dame!!!” Not too many people can say that. Rudy was not understanding the other things he accomplished.
The janitor was actually speaking to his younger self. It was like older version of him was advising younger version, to do it right this time and not end up at the position he’s at now.
That's what I love about this scene. I think in that moment he really did look at Rudy like he was his son. Or at least that's what the movie was trying to portray.
Love how Fortune has always had Rudy's back in the film. He always gave Rudy the wake up calls he needed when he didn't realize how much he's accomplished.
I personally love the line “you hung in with the best college football team in the land FOR 2 YEARS!” It both shows much how time has passed in the movie and means when your about to quit, look how far you’ve gotten
And Fortune followed it up by saying "And you're also gonna walk outta here with a degree from the University of Notre Dame!" I can't hear that without getting chills."
@KRodBabay His shortcomings were endless, Dyslexia, lack of funds, no place to live, barely had grades for junior college and was told he couldn't go on the Notre Dame bus tour because "It's not a sight seeing tour" if that wouldn't motivate you I don't know what would.
Rudy dealt with so many people that he would never go to Notre Dame for his Disability. Never be able to play for Notre Dames Football Team b/c he was undersized. He didn't have to prove anything to anyone except himself! I also had a Disability growing up, and was told I would never go to College or have a good job. I was told to quit and go work at Walmart. But one College took a chance on me, it was a struggle in the beginning, but I got through it and Graduated. Then eventually found a good job that has been a career!
“Still not a week goes by I don’t regret it.” Personally, this resonates deep with me. I’m in my early 20s and I have to many regrets already. I’m done letting my attitude or my unsurety in my self to keep me from what I need to do or what I should be doing.
I had a lot of regrets too, until I realized I’ll keep having them unless I do something about it. Not joining the military was one of them and I just joined the army reserve at age 30. Not letting myself live with regret anymore.
Blue Tortoise Most of us make many mistakes and accumulate regrets in our 20s (I did!). The ones that don't, eventually make those same mistakes later on in life, where there is more to lose. If you play your cards right, your value as a person (financially and socially) exponentially increases in your early 30s and well into your 50s and beyond. Sounds like you have about a decade to look at your cards, analyse your game plan, and make a play. I think the odds are very high on your favor.
This is such a powerful message. Back in 2008 my contract at CNBC didn't get renewed, and I let the co workers get me to such a point that I refused to go in the final day. Not a day goes by I don't regret that. Fast forward to today. I have gone back to school for HVAC, and just made my Universal certification for the EPA. I'm getting married to the most wonderful woman in the world come October. I have a job in the field as well and the future looks bright. This speech was one of many inspirations to never give up and keep moving forward.
Congrats, man! I'm in a similar type of position; I've been job hunting since I graduated college this year and I was really close to getting a job I really wanted at a magazine company (out of the 600 applicants, I was one of the 6 chosen to be called in for interviewing). I didn't get it and I initially wanted to just give up and feel sorry for myself but I hung in there. I'm still looking right now but I can be glad knowing I haven't given up despite the odds
Dirk Digger He doesn't have enough screen time to get an oscar, if he was a major character (screen time wise not impact wise) he very well may have and most definitely should have.
Great scene in an excellent movie. Thank you Mr. Charles S. Dutton! You deserve an Oscar for this performance. Also love the end when Fortune shows up to see Rudy on the field and in the last play. He knew then that this speech made THE difference in Rudy's life. Sure it's Hollywood, but it's truly inspiring!
Fortune: "You're 5 foot nothin', 100 and nothin', and you have barely a speck of athletic ability. And you hung in there with the best college football players in the land for 2 years. And you're gonna walk outta here with a degree from the University of Notre Dame. In this life, you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody but yourself. And after what you've gone through, if you haven't done that by now, it ain't gonna never happen. Now go on back." Man, what a great scene & inspirational message. Especially if you're an underdog or a guy who wasn't blessed with natural talent.

You know this movie is full of hard truths to a lot of people who have worked hard in a sport they loved, only to see their hard work, dedication, and commitment to their team be met with nothing. I’ve been there, rode the bench all through senior year, homecoming came and went and not a second spent off the sideline, senior night and once more not a chance to play, not a single opportunity given or offered. Then the time came when we were definitely going to lose our playoff game and I got sent in. I didn’t do anything noteworthy but I was there on the tackle, probably a step or two behind at least being entered into the stat sheet. That was the only play I got. I know it beat my position coach up that me and the other three guys like me managed to stay the course and stayed positive all the way to the end because the guy could barely look me in the eye when the season ended when I said “thank you” for not forgetting me.
I'm a Sophmore and I've been riding the bench for my football team. I haven't quit because I believe I can show my non believing coaches and friends they were wrong about me. I keep telling myself not to let them get the best of me

I played select soccer for Solar soccer club , won the Dallas Cup., traveled all over the U.S had great moments and great teammates and a great opportunity right there in my lap. I'm 26 years old now and not a day goes by that I dont regret walking away from it all. If i knew then what i know now i would have pushed through to the finish line. If i had known those great moments would turn into bittersweet memories I would have done it different. Now I realize it only happens once in a lifetime being in the position I was in and I was too young minded and stupid to realize it. Instead of going in for the kill , I walked away from it all at will. Just to hang out with my so called "friends" instead of going to practice. To go to partys on the weekend instead of being on that field on the weekend. Such a bittersweet life this is , to grown up amd fully understand what you now want in your life was right at your feet at one point. Moral of the story is never give up , or stray off the path less traveled. Take it from someone full of regret , to keep from regretting. You only get one chance at life do it right.
RUDY is a timeless story and it would be perfect as a Broadway Musical as well!! This person is like my American hero.... someone who believed what he wanted no matter what people thought.
Agreeable Dragon right! Kids these days the majority of them wanna quit when it gets hard. I always told my kids anything in this world worth having isn’t gonna come easy it’s gonna be hard and your gonna get knocked down but you have to get back up and keep churning. And once you accomplish that goal you’ve been chasing it’s the best feeling in the world.
It’s easily my favorite scene in the movie. You feel like you learned Fortune’s whole story in just a few short lines. Nobody thought he should have played for Notre Dame either, albeit for more sinister reasons. But both he and Rudy were judged for their background and appearance and Fortune feels that he let himself down and that he let the bastards grind him down. Charles Dutton plays him perfectly.
Very motivational scene for anyone with ambition, dreams, goals. I currently feel this way about UA-cam, doing UA-cam (for 3 years now, minimal results). I understood then when I started, and I understand still now how difficult it is to devote oneself to a specific path. Despite occasional nods of encouragement, I currently find myself in limbo. I haven't quit, but I do feel at a loss, loss of spirit. I still make videos and will continue to do so. Riding the bench sucks; But being present is better than not showing up at all. No one should be absent from their own life. Even if the road ends up nowhere, the effort is validation enough. If you give up on something you like doing it's kind of like betraying yourself. Being true to oneself is really the best anyone can do. So just like Rudy I'll continue to maintain Fortune's Truth. Truth to Oneself.
Played high school football. 5'2 135lbs. I lost the use of my left hand at 8 years old due to cancer. How I loved sports. Never got to know what it was like to play under the lights. But I practiced like I started.
Damn. Fortune regretted quitting so much he got a job as a custodian and groundskeeper to stay as close as he could to the notre dame stadium so he could settle his heart.
I'll be completing my MBA this year, but Ive held back telling people because I'm embarrassed at how old I am getting it, when all my friends finished their degrees years ago. I had to go back to this movie and remember that In this life I don't have to prove anything to anyone but myself. Yeah I'm a bit older than my graduating class, but I'm going to walk away with an MBA that I paid for in cash and no loans.
I know the feeling. I may not graduate for another 4 years, Even though I actually started my journey to taking college level courses 5 years ago. Sooner or later though, I'm gonna walk out with at least an associates and engineering when I had to work from elementary algebra all the way to getting an engineering degree. I'm at talk one, now, and this is my 4th time taking it. And I'm 35 years old believe me, what you did was an accomplishment and I have yet to make it there but I'm still at it.
@@geoffwilliams4478 I'm 22 and half, I fell behind on my degree and have been feeling quite useless but this motivated me a little. I wish you the best of luck with you degree and your life, it's never over until we say its over.
It’s the 30th anniversary this fall for this movie and this quote in this movie gets me I love this movie I lived in south bend when they filmed this entire movie such a great movie
25th anniversary it comes back to the theater on August 28 when I turn 40 I'm so excited to see this movie again it's such an inspiring story I love this quote and scene from the movie
Yes. I think I'll watch it tonight. You never know when a seemingly ordinary person might give you really good advice when you need it most. He was in the right place at the right time so Rudy heard what he needed to hear when he needed to hear it.
I couldn't get into the University of Notre Dame with my test scores. Getting a degree from there is something to be very proud of and an accomplishment nobody can ever take away from you.
I had a very similar scenario like this occur to me a few months back. At the time I had grown unhappy with my job that I had had for almost six years… it simply was going nowhere and I wasn’t happy for various reasons. Some of the reasons were that I wasn’t making much money, I was part time and I wanted to go full time (at that time it wasn’t easy because there weren’t many positions available), I wasn’t getting much opportunities to grow in my skills, and I also was having problems with one of my coworkers. For about three months I went through depression and I was unmotivated to keep going in my career. There were many days where I would come home and I would basically be like “What’s the point of continuing with this anymore?” and unfortunately I was, in a way, shutting myself off from my family. My mom is very much like Fortune in this scene, because she doesn’t sugarcoat it, she gives you brutal honesty and tells you how it is. One day, a few days before my 24th birthday, I came home very depressed. She was very worried and she talked to me kind of like how Fortune talks to Rudy in this scene. It was a conversation I absolutely needed to have, and it helped big time. I, with her urging, stayed there for a little while longer, and about 3 weeks later, I got the job offer I’d been waiting for: a full time position with benefits and better pay, as well as insurance. I know now looking back that if I had quit, I would have probably ended up in a worse situation with getting a job that probably would have been even worse. I’m a lot better now and I’m really glad that I stayed there and waited out for the opportunity that I was given.
“Still not a week goes by I don’t regret it.” I was so close of reaching my dream which was to become a professional soccer player, I was so close too, playing for the reserves and all... And he is right its been 14 years since I quit and not a week goes by I don't regret it...

Such a bittersweet life this is , to grown up amd fully understand what you now want in your life was right at your feet at one point. Moral of the story is never give up , or stray off the path less traveled. Take it from someone full of regret , to keep from regretting. You only get one chance at life do it right.
Charles Dutton was amazing is this scene and movie!
Charles S. Dutton's finest hour.
You should watch the scene from the tv show "ROC" vs the drug dealer. Powerful.
@@borzi Also when he faced down a Xenomorph in Aliens 3👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
This short scene in its self should have garnered him a Supporting Role nomination !!!!!!!!!
“PROVE WHAT”? Charles Dutton movies back then seemed to have him giving some powerful speech.
RUDY is a timeless story and it would be perfect as a Broadway Musical as well!! This person is like my American hero.... someone who believed what he wanted no matter what people thought.
This is my kick in the pants video when I start to feel sorry for myself. Works everytime!
One of the best scenes in cinema ever. Imagine kids today putting in this much effort, they cower because of sidewalk chalk.
You should see him give it to Earl from my name is Earl
isnt it your generation who raised us? take some responsibility rather than blaming everyone else.
@@Petey0707 I didn't spoil my kid, take away the smartphones & make them work

Tell that to other parents then and influence them, boomer.
I have met Rudy. He came to my town I live in. He gave a speech.
This is my favorite scene in the movie...Very powerful!
+Kevin Koppi I have baby ears
I usually don’t really care for sports films, but man, this speech and this movie are both great
And you're also gonna walk outta here with a degree from the university of Notre Dame. That line always does it for me.
“Do you hear me clear enough?”. 😢
Where the hell is Charles S. Dutton’s Oscar? Dude nailed this scene.
Arguably the best damned "wake up" speech I've heard in any movie....
Played high school football. 5'2 135lbs. I lost the use of my left hand at 8 years old due to cancer. How I loved sports. Never got to know what it was like to play under the lights. But I practiced like I started.
You still can play. You are still eligible. Try junior college then university.
One of the most underrated actors Charles s Dutton
I am not even a fan of football and I remember loving this movie in the 90s.
Be proud stand tall
I wish you the best of luck with you degree and your life, it's never over until we say its over.
one of my all time favorite movies.
Charles Dutton has turned out countless performances of this caliber. The man is, quite simply, a treasure.
Charles Dutton is am awesome actor...enough said!
Word!
Whenever I think about quitting I watch this scene and 🔥and I realise I am not a quitter don't give up, never ever.
Charles Dutton is an amazing actor.
Greatest motivation speech ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enough said!
This is the greatest movie of all time.
It’s the 30th anniversary this fall for this movie and this quote in this movie gets me I love this movie I lived in south bend when they filmed this entire movie such a great movie
While I was watching this, it felt like an uncle giving me life lessons.
I'm not into football but this is an amazing movie. I've watched it twice.
One of the greatest scenes in movie history. Such a great movie
Still holds up. It's different when it comes from someone who made the same mistake you are about to make.
25th anniversary it comes back to the theater on August 28 when I turn 40 I'm so excited to see this movie again it's such an inspiring story I love this quote and scene from the movie
I need to see this movie again. It has been much to long.
Nightwing245 i watch this movie each month
Yes. I think I'll watch it tonight. You never know when a seemingly ordinary person might give you really good advice when you need it most. He was in the right place at the right time so Rudy heard what he needed to hear when he needed to hear it.
"And i guarantee you, a week wont go by in your life, you wont regret letting them get the best of you"
I couldn't get into the University of Notre Dame with my test scores.
This Needs A Oscar!
Charles S Dutton is such a phenomenal actor
1:04 My Favorite line
“Still not a week goes by I don’t regret it.”
I was so close of reaching my dream which was to become a professional soccer player, I was so close too, playing for the reserves and all... And he is right its been 14 years since I quit and not a week goes by I don't regret it...
This is one of the best scenes in cinema history. The message is beautiful.
Now go on back.
This is the greatest scene ever made
Having coached in college athletics my fondest wish is that the deleted scene was, “Coach Joe? II talked to the kid. He’s on his way back. :-)“
One of the greatest scenes of all time.
Never knew I needed to hear this right about now. Cuts deep.
“Do you hear me clear enough?”
Powerful
This movie is important for Highschool Seniors
