Remember this quote? This part was foreshadowed in episode 26 when Ed, Ling and Envy were trapped inside of Gluttony. Ed had Envy gather the remaining fragments from Xerxes and Ed translated that the lion swallowing the sun meant the above quote. The writing in this anime/manga is so magnificent, that it still impresses me after all these re-watches.
Yea, for example, you actually see Father in the first episode ^^
It's this and so many other details and elements that make it impossible for me to see how people can put the 2003 series over this one. Characters like Scar, Bradley, Envy, Greed, Hoenheim, Marco, Alex, Havoc, Maria, and pretty much EVERYONE but the relationship between Ed and Al (not the brothers themselves, just the relationship) and Tucker and the backstory of Yoki are weaker in the 2003 series, and others like Ling, Lan Fan, Olivier, Old Man Fu, Kimblee, and Buccaneer don't even exist in it.
And if people like Ed and Winry's relationship, the 2003 anime leaves those fans fucked. Fans of Roy and Riza too, for that matter. There's like... no relationships that go anywhere in it.

The part when Scar reveals his creation tattoo is one of the most emotional moments of the series for me. It says so much about his development and his journey. Even though he will never forgive Amestris for their crimes, he understands that destruction only is not the solution and that he needs to create, if he wants to save his people. Definitely one of the best character arc I have ever seen.
Don't forget the fact that he's currently trying to kill the physical personification of WRATH, the personality trait that for so long drove him down the wrong path. You could do a Symbolism analysis on this particular fight for days if you wanted.
Yes but that moment isn't what does it for me. The moment that drives it home comes next week. " Ishvalen! I guess i was mistaken, I thought the science of alchemy was abhorrent in the eyes of Ishval; the one you believe to be the creator of all things! Have you abandoned your god? You wohld leave him? So easily? Is your god so readily lost to your people? Is he?! The Ishvalen civil war, when you were surrounded by nothing but DESPAIR! Surely somewhere in the darkest depths of your heart, you began to believe that there was no god in this world at all!
Yeeeeees! An iconic moment! (But honestly, FMAB is one iconic moment after another! Especially during these last ten episodes!)

I had the same reaction of "how do they come back from this!?" This anime has one of the most intense endings of all time, imo.

The fact that it's so intense is probably what ruined the ending for me. An anime with a twist like that SHOULD NOT have an ending as happy as Brotherhood did, it just does not fit the tone of the conclusion.

EJBWolf I am not talking about story though, I am talking about the tone. From the beginning of the story they inluded the "high stakes" that no one is safe - like with Hughes' death and what happened to Nina. If they wanted to have a happy ending, they shouldn't have set up the tone like they did.
You're just gonna dismiss all the uplifting episodes and moments in the series? The show balances good and bad all the time, so it's not "out of tone," it's just that the writer chose to make a good ending after all the bad that was thrown the characters' way.
You guys are the first reactors to realize Scar *created* those spikes, he didn't just destroy to make spikes, furthermore he used his left hand, which "shouldn't" have tattoos. Yet you instantly realized what that implies.

Angra Mainyu no. the outline of amestris, as shown on maps, isn't a perfect circle, and sloth followed the border when making the nation-wide transmutation circle. the perfect circles are the eclipse and hohenheim's counter circle, because they're better designed and more precise.

and yes, the circle being "good enough" is the entire point of these comments.
@Ancient 6.6 the border is off, and no, they didn't follow it perfectly. they did their best to make a perfect circle and are probably something like half a mile off.
but hoenheim used two perfect circles to counter it, the shadow and points of his own blood, he didn't have to dig a tunnel and misalign it. hoenheim's circles are more circular than fathers, and that tickles me pink.

12:13 Wow. This has to be the first reaction I've seen where someone has fully understood Father's plan and what he's doing when watching EP 60. Bravo Blind Wave! I suspected you guys might get it after watching EP 26 and your discussion after it, and you didn't disappoint.
Everyone does have their own personal gateway. You can see that: Every gateway we've seen has a different design. Mustang's design looks like the fire alchemy sign on his gloves. Al has a tree of knowledge, while Ed's has more of a molecular design. Both those latter two are existing symbols (outside anime) that have something to do with philosophy, I believe, but I can't remember exactly what they are.
Edward's is the Tree of Life from Kabbalah.

Many people are confused when they see the last part, but basic concept of this was already shown in ep 26. Ed translated Xerxes' Mural, saying "It means I strike God to the earth and be the perfect being." It is exactly what 'father' does in this episode.
Next three episodes(61~63) are the scenes which make FMA Legend, IMO. I can't wait until next week!!
Everything just goes to shit in this one moment but leads to the shows best opening sequence next episode.

Where did scar get this tattoos? Before the death of Rocbells he didn't had tatoos (rewatched flashback to check it) which means brother gave him only one hand. Is there a consensus on the answer to that?

Little known fact: the eclipse represents a perfect being because the moon represents a woman and the sun a man therefore in tandem a neutral omniscient figure. But he used the sacrifices the same way they sacrificed something to commit the ultimate taboo, and it showed him the truth through the living earth's gate how they were shown the truth. The main difference is it was during the eclipse (the perfect being).
This is actually mentioned in the next episode. 😊
Imagine what it must be like to be in Drachma or Aerugo or wherever and see all this going down. You're just minding your business as a border guard or something, and then suddenly the whole country is covered in seriously HUGE wacky inflatable arm-flailing tube men, and then there's a fucking DOORWAY in THE SKY and FUCKING GODZILLA climbs out of it and starts screaming at the moon, and then ANOTHER doorway opens up EVEN HIGHER IN THE SKY and this huge eye just STARES down at you...

That ending scene. Three of my favorite tracks in this entire anime. First a somber, almost deathly ominous theme. Then the theme for whenever some messed up shit is going down. Then a theme filled with dread yet nervous excitement at the prospect of greater things to come
A lot of the stuff about Truth, God, and the Gateway/Portal is pretty abstract and up for interpretation.
4:23 out of all the people I’ve seen that reacted to this show, Aaron is the one and only person who pointed out that this is the first time we heard Wrath yell!! The Wrath we see from this episode forward is not the same Wrath we’ve been seeing. He has always been so calm and quiet but deadly. He outclassed every single opponent he’s faced so far in the show that even when he talks during the battle, he sounds very laid back. One thing that sticks out is that Wrath, unlike the other 6 homunculus who seem to be living their names all the time, barely showed any of his fury. He’s had a few rather serious looks on his face but he was far from being “the furious”. This episode, after he said fighting for his own survival with nothing else makes him feel so complete and that he’s finally arrived, we finally got a taste of the true Wrath. Seeing him finally yelling, questioning everything as he fights all out is just so intense and satisfying!!! Truly Amazing character design!!!
This is like the universal reaction to the end of this episode. "What just happened." It's such grand and existential animation and sound that you really just experience it instead of fully grasping what's going on.
If you go back and watch when Ed and Al are in the gateway by themselves, you'll see different murals on their respective doors. This is best seen when Ed finds Al's body in the gateway.

That being said, this does pose the question what would Father have done had one of the sacrifices ended their own life before he could use them to open the portal? Actually would have happened had Al's soul not returned to his metal body before the eclipse?

Just like the end of a movie I watched recently.
I noticed it only the second time... as much as Father roars about God "joining him" and "no longer being bound by his consequences"... God doesn't respond. The Eye just watches... completely silent.
everyone has their own gate, a personal portal of the truth, the only known special case is ed and al, because ed bonded their souls together when he sold his arm for al. however, there is only one being named Truth, which is omnipresent, both within and without the gate, everyone's gate.
father's plan required 5 people who had seen the truth because he needed to open 5 gates and have the outpouring energy resonate (which he refers to as the gates fighting for his soul), which then combines with the power of the souls he rips from everyone in amestris and he becomes able to force the planet's gate open and pass through it to grab the truth and ensnare it.
Jeez they sound depressed can't wait for the next episode

Everyone has a gateway (they even have different designs on them but this may be reflecting on the person since the planets gate did not have anything on it) and they all lead basically to a collection of information and power (you may even want to say that they connect you to gods power or something cheesy like that). When you use alchemy you are using smal bits of power that leak trough the unopened door but when you use human transmutation the gate opens because human transmutation creates enough power to force the users gate to open.
Now as the gate opens you get access to things that you should not have, in other words you are break a LAW of nature so to say. For doing this (no matter if you wanted to or not) you will get punished by having something taken away from you by the truth but you will also gain a certain amount of knowledge. Not much (considering that the amount behind the gate is so wast it may as well be infinite) since 1 human transmutation can not keep the gate fully open long enough for you to take/absorb more but still a considerable amount plus you get to use alchemy by using your body as the circle.
What Father did is take 5 people whose gates where opened before and use them in human transmutation on a large scale. Now since they had their gates open before instead of fathers own gate (if he has one, which he might not since he is a homunculus) their gates opened. However only one gate would be able to take him so a fight over his soul started between the gates this exchange create a huge mass of power that Father was able to use.
In order to open a gate a certain amount of power is needed corresponding to the "size" of the gate. For a humans gate to be opened is easy but for the gate of the planet Father needed way more power then he could create and that he got from the other gates fighting. Now the planets gate either works differently or Father managed to usurp it with the power he got. Either way he was able to open the gate and trough it gain enough power to "drag down and absorb" god who in alchemy is represented by the eclipse (the combination of the sun and moon/man and woman/everything with everything).

On my Blu-ray collection this is the last episode of one disc. When I watched it with my dad I tried to convince him that this was the last episode of the series ;P
Its kinda the same from avatar, Its deep in eastern philosophy, so Father describes the earth as one giant organism the same as the tree in the swamp in ATLA And LOK.
So just like ed and al and izumi have a gateway earth has its own memorys and its own soul, but the reason he did this during the eclipse is because in alchemy the moon and the sun overlapsing is the symbol for a perfect being or God. Also if you remember truth describes itself by many names god the world, the universe
So when father opened earths gateway he opened the gateway of god/truth the exact same time, and since god/truth was present during the eclipse he was able to pass through the world's Gateway. The same way Edward and Ling passed through glunttony to get back to their world

Okay for a little clarification father was looking to use the entire planet and the combination of the sun and moon during the eclipse to summon the Azoth.
In alchemy the Azoth a more scientific view on God, it's the ultimate truth universal acceptance, understanding, and ultimately the reason we exist. A good way to explain it is to think of a machine, the universe is the machine with an unthinkable amount of gears all turning in perfect unison each with their own purpose and function.
This machine runs Non-Stop and at its heart the thing controlling it all the conductor, mechanic, or engineer of it all keeps the machine running keeps the gears turning keeps everything nice and taken care of assuring that everything does its purpose.
This is God, God is truth, truth is understanding.
