Whenever I feel bad about leaving stuff to the last minute, I remember that Father had years and years to prepare for the Promised Day, and he still waited until the very last moment to get a fifth sacrifice. Father is a procrastinator.
JojoInSpace Every alchemist in existence is aware what human transmutation does to the alchemist. The implications are that he went through millions worth of alchemist before, during and after the state alchemist exams were invented. You *have* to be as talented as Izumi, Ed and Al to open the portal, and even then it wasn't garanteed they would survive. Ed bonding Al to the armor was extraordinary, any other alchemist would have just left it at that or died trying to do what he did. Berry and the Slasher brothers were the only other people to have been successfully bonded. Knowing all this, alchemists in general consider the act of human transmutation to be taboo and downright stupid, why would any of them ever perform it? What about the others that were forced to perform it and didn't survive? Would the Homunculi be willing to do what Pride did knowing what it costs him? The point is, this wasn't procrastination, it legitimately took Father years and years to find monsterously talented alchemists to make sacrifices. He was just unlucky enough to have Hohenhiem's sons born as late as they were.
+ Rogue Pylon I appreciate that you took the time to in great detail explain why my #relatable procrastination joke isn't canonical, but I did know that when I wrote it as well. Still, points for dedication, good work. 👍
(Makes me wonder if the transmutation in The Blind Alchemist counted as human transmutation or not. Father would probably know about it if it did, but never used him. Maybe he didn't see the Truth or go through the portal. Who knows)
Actually no... he did have things planned to as much as what is able to control. He only needs sacrifices when the circle and promise day arrive so he can't very well force the issue until near the day. The whole reason for establishing State Alchemist program allows him to keep track of research and give him a list of people he can tap as potentials, and he have 7 homunculus & central military keeping track and to force the issue as a last resort. Which was why Scar accidentally became a threat... he could care less about Scar's revenge & killing people but that revenge ended up targeting the entirety of his candidate pool. So he send the homunculus after him. If thing were to happen without interference he would have gather those with already seen Truth and grab a few of the State Alchemist to force an opening with the full might of central. Worst come to worst he can go after non-state alchemist.

In his initial plan, Marcoh was gonna be the fifth sacrifice but he escaped. Mustang was an alternative and in the end, they had to use him.
Love Ed's reaction when he realizes what Truth had taken from Mustang, despite how often they'd would argue and seemingly not get along very well, he was horryfied and then as Father and Pride mocked Mustang for it he was furious. Similar how previously Mustang reacted when Ed was being taken away. Always nice to see characters care about another^^

They have an interesting relationship. I think one of the reasons Ed is so aggressive towards Roy is because he sees him as a form of father figure and he's projecting his anger onto him (also Roy can be a dick toqards Ed sometimes so he hinda deserves it...).

Yeah. I like to think that Edward sees Roy as an older brother figure, something he doesn’t have since he himself is a big brother. Or perhaps he views Roy as a kind of role model, someone he can look up to (Not that he would ever admit it). The same with Mustang seeing Ed as a little brother or a protégée.
Of course we can only speculate about this and I am definitely ignoring the yaoi shippers on this one. Not much of a fan of Ed x Mustang as a romantic pairing.

Its just something about a little boy shouting that is hilarious to me but also Hoenheim shouting "FUCK HIM UP!" in the last fight. Those are two best.
I would recommend hunting down the FMAB blu ray/dvd special shorts that take the piss out of everything this scene is parodied in one of the best way ever.
I have the Blu-ray Box set, do you mean the bloopers or in the commentary? There isn't any other extra than those.Unless there is a different version.
Well then i'm not sure look them up online but they are just comedic bits of extra animation mostly done in chibi form.
I think they are the OVA's, yeah I haven't seen them and they are not on the Blu-ray I have but I am meaning to watch them at some point.

This show love's irony and poetic situations. The punishments for all the sacrifices are opposite of what they want. The deaths of the homunculi so far relate to their sin-- Lust died longing for her killer, Envy committed suicide being jealous of humans, Gluttony was eaten ...
Lust didn't long for Mustand, what are you even talking about? The irony in her death was that it was a passionless, clinically cold execution done as a matter of duty. Admittedly, it's less perfectly fitting than some of the others, but still.
Huh? Hohenheim want to die only after he became immortal. Dying has never been a part of what he wished for when he was still a mere mortal.

Sophie Filo, the original is a good series, but if you disregard the nostalgia, it is nowhere near Brotherhood's level. In my opinion, the closest to that level is Hunter x Hunter.

They don’t go into great detail in this version but Mustang’s glove is made from an ignition cloth. The friction from his snaps creates a spark and he uses the alchemy from the glove to mess with the density of the air to do what he does.
Mustang has seen the Truth now(even though he's blind); meaning he doesn't need a transmutation circle, just like Ed and Al. Theoretically, Mustang should be able to just clap and perform flame alchemy since the glove itself isn't too damaged.
Don't his gloves give him the spark though? So he'll need a lighter or transmutate a spark before doing the air or whatever transmutation he uses for the big flames.
He would need a glove or lighter, just not the transmutation glyph on his glove or w/e

The Dwarf in the flask is an artificially created human made by Hoeinhiem's Master back when he was a slave. We don't know much more about him

Alphonse sure is my favourite character, he’s always there for his brother and friends. He turned down the offer to get his body back just to help others....
15:47 not just that he was too close to the circle, but the fact that he WAS the circle, his shadows traced it out, and I'm pretty sure it's implied he used his own philosopher's stone to power the transmutation, because the other human transmutations required materials, and I assume the doctor was going to trick roy anyways, using his philosopher's stone as materials thus meaning Risa would have died anyways.
I always interpreted it as that Pride did the human transmutation and Mustang was simply brought along for the ride. (May had stopped Riza from getting close and said that she could get pulled in if she got too close.) Mustang's price was his eyesight, and Pride on the other hand used his philosopher's stone to pay the price. (Ed and Al were initially looking for a philosopher's stone so that they could use it to replace Al's price (his body) with the philosopher's stone.) Pride used the doctor's body for materials, which is why he ended up as a ball of flesh. Pride was breaking up because his philosopher's stone is severely depleted.
Wrath was created out of a human body, and Bradley specifically mentions that he had to out-fight the Philosopher's Stone to stay alive. He doesn't have a regeneration ability. Contrast that with Ling, who freely gave his body to Greed, and who does. Maybe that's got something to do with it.
So, Mustang doesn't need a circle anymore but he does need a spark. That's just how his alchemy works. Seeing Truth only gives the person the ability to perform without a circle. Ed can use alchemy without a circle but he still needs materials, like his metal arm. The spark, along with air, is one Mustangs materials. So he still needs the gloves. Or a liter. Or a flame or something. He still needs his materials. Alchemy is like an equation. You need the formula and then the correct materials. When people see truth they don't need the formula anymore but they still need the correct materials. Alchemy is called a science for a reason.
Did you guys forget that seeing The Truth lets you preform alchemy without a transmutation circle? Mustang doesn't really need the circle on his gloves any more.

Whether they become a sacrifice or not is not determined by if they sacrificed something, but if they opened the portal and saw the truth. Alfonse getting his body back doesn't change the fact that he committed the taboo. Or at least that's what I always thought... am I wrong?

The gloves are made of a special material that creates sparks when you snap your fingers. So to do it without the glove he would need another way to create a spark like when he killed lust.

Mustang's alchemy is turning this spark into a huge blaze, but he needs the spark first.
The gloves are made of special fabric, that create a spark when snapping his fingers which he needs for his alchemy. Example when against Lust he drew the circle on his hand with blood but needed a lighter to make it spark

I think someone else in previous comments said that Bradley has only one philosopher stone so he ages and doesn't regenerate. Since the souls were too wrathful and killed each other and the victorious one stayed.

All one needs to do in order to be eligible to be a sacrifice is 'seen the truth', and one of the only ways to do that is to perform human transmutation. Whether or not Mustang willingly opened the portal doesn't matter he say the truth and therefore he is now a sacrifice and he had to pay a price for seeing the truth. The same goes for Hohenheim.

By the way, the gloves are a crucial part of Mustang’s alchemy. His transmutation circle alters the density of the air around him, making a sort of a flammable line from his hands to the target. His gloves act as a flint stone that makes a spark which is then grown to a flame by the altered air density.
Mustang saw the truth now so he doesn't need a transmutation circle now.

The "Who turned out the lights" bit really killed the moment for me. I don't think the writer was going for humor, but that's what I got.
Father is THE Homunculus, actually. They explain a little about this in the part with Hohenheim’s flashback. He was created by the Alchemists from Xerxes who wanted to learn the secret to immortality for the Emperor. They used Hohenheim’s blood the create the dwarf in the flask to learn “secrets from Nature”, much like the uses of homunculi are described in medieval alchemical writings.
But where exactly does he come from, it’s yet to be known.
He calls the homunculi by that name because they are part of him and, also, because they are also, in a way, “created artificially” with an especific purpose.
Why couldn't the gold-toothed doctor perform the human transmutation and become the 5th sacrifice?

I always theorized that Father is a failed attempt to create an artificial Truth, much like Gluttony is a failed attempt to create an artificial Portal of Truth. It would at least partially explain all his knowledge of alchemy and how he knew how to make philosophers stones in the first place
Pride was like envy when they went through the gate to get back to the real world. His philosopher s stone was already exhausted even when he ate gluttony so that transmutation took a big toll on him
Scar and Bradley was the fight I always wanted. By far, the two most badass in the entire show.

And an interesting fact, if Alphonse actually did take his body back, the eclipse would have been useless then. They need 5 sacrifices. That's why his body at the end basically said "I'm happy you're being selfless, but you just doomed everyone by going back there." so if Al took his body back, the show went a different route than it actually took. Despite that, i do love the rest of this show all the way to the end.
Mustang's 'price' is the one thing about the story I cannot abide.
Let's all sit down and appreciate hat Bradley made his weapon of choice the official issue sword of the country he presided to always have a weapon at hand. Idk it's just so clever xD

If i had to choose to fight Father, Hoenhiem, Sloth, Pride, Kimblee, Scar, Izumi, General Armstrong and Mustang all at the same time or to fight King Bradley by his lonesome, i truly think i’d pick the group. That’s how intimidating King Bradley is to me. His glare itself has so much intensive presence and witnessing what he can do with a single sword firsthand is jaw dropping. I will always see him as the most powerful fighter in this series. I feel like they never show him and Father in the same scene because of how underwhelmingly insignificant Father would appear while in the presence of King Bradley. He truly feels like a god-tier anime character, in my opinion. His speed, precision and agility are truly forces to be reckoned with.
Now I have to wait another week for another video!????!!!

"Aside from the Homunculi's standard powers, Pride's abilities lie within both a black living controllable multi-eyed and multi-mouthed shadow (that resembles Father's true form).
Pride's black multi-eyed shadow is his actual form, with the childlike body being a simple "container" for him to move around in, similar to Father's flask-contained form. Pride often shapes parts of himself into long, tendril-arm-like appendages that resemble those of Father's actual form and those of the Eye of God (which references him being a "son" of Father, who in turn was created from the Eye's essence; it may also be a reference to pride being a pathetic attempt to outwardly mimic God).
Pride can only exist within a given area: the area inside his primary "container", the area around his primary "container", and the transmutation circle (which is his secondary "container" and the same one used by Father for his main plan) throughout Amestris. Additionally, Pride cannot create these dark extensions of himself if there are no shadows near his body. This means that, if he is in complete darkness, he is incapable of using his power, and if his body is engulfed by light intense enough to extinguish the shadows around him, like a flash grenade, his extensions also vanish. This holds true for the extensions far from his body as well, as intense light will cause them to wither to a certain degree. Perhaps unique among the Homunculi, Pride does not appear to bleed when injured, and his human shaped container appears to be hollow, with its contents apparently consisting only of his shadowy true form and his Stone.
Pride's "container" also seems to be extremely resistant to physical damage as seen during Heinkel's attacks, and the car's impact taking little damage.
Pride can also spread his essence throughout shadows and can sense everything around and that happens around that shadow, thus allowing him to "watch" anything through them. Pride used this ability to make sure and prevent Riza Hawkeye from spreading Selim Bradley's true identity to other people (though Riza foiled this by speaking in code to Roy Mustang).
Pride can manipulate, slice through or devour anything that comes in contact with his black shadow (which can become resistant/invulnerable to conventional physical harm, and can also move at superhuman speeds), although it can be deflected by sufficiently hard objects; Carbon-hardened objects appear particularly resistant. He can also see through his eyes and talk through his mouths wherever his shadow extend, an ability he uses to watch over the country-wide transmutation tunnel, slaughtering anyone who enters it.
Pride can control Alphonse's (armor) body by inserting extensions of himself inside the armor body, he is able to do this - while also keeping Alphonse unconscious - thanks to his relation to him through Hohenheim allowing him to manipulate Alphonse's soul through his blood seal. He used this in an attempt to trick Edward into completely falling under Pride's grasp (Greed, who was with Edward at the time, foils this by sensing Pride's presence). He was even capable of talking with Alphonse's voice in this state.
Pride can consume living things and assimilate the abilities and strengths of that particular victim, along with their corresponding weaknesses (i.e. after devouring Gluttony, Pride gained an enhanced sense of smell and sharp teeth on his shadows, along with Gluttony's ravenous hunger). After assimilating Kimblee, Pride gains capability of Alchemy and can activate it using a corresponding circle with his shadows, later also briefly assimilating the Gold-Toothed Doctor to use his knowledge to perform human transmutation - while also using him as the human transmutation "material". However, he was forced to use his own Philosopher's Stone to accomplish this, and was never demonstrated to be capable of using alchemy in any other way.
In chapter 104, Pride attempts to use his small size and speed to exploit Edward's weaknesses in hand-to-hand combat as Edward is used to fighting people taller than him, but has his fighting style read easily by his opponent.
Another ability Pride seems to have is the ability to slightly change the age that he appears to be. While he is always a young child, pictures of him taken in the past show his apparent age fluctuating by about five years. Since Father had Pride living out of the shadows since he was born, this ability is likely used to make him appear human.
Pride later seems to gain the ability to genuinely age upon having his Philosopher's stone depleted of its souls and being forced into his true form. Over the two years after the end of the series he managed to grow from his original fetus-like form to a child form resembling his "container" used to hold his shadows."

I think Mustang just paid for seeing the Truth and gaining the knowledge to perform alchemy by clapping his hands, not necessarily for transmuting that mad scientist.
I would say that losing his eyesight is pretty big and fitting for Mustang. Sure it may seem like less then Ed or All but in reality not only is he blind but everything that he worked so hard for was taken as well. He can not be a soldier anymore much less an alchemist (maybe he could learn to do some stuff while blind but not much especially not flame alchemy). So now his dreams, ambitions, all the promises he made to his comrades, basically his reason to live is gone whether he likes it or not. All that he has left are his friends and while he could still find some sort of happiness, he would always think of what could have been.
Plus to him losing an arm or a leg would mean nothing really. He is the type that would just move on by getting an automail and not giving a crap about it afterwords (maybe even turn it into an advantage). Even losing some internal organs would not really stop him. I mean sure he would probably live like Izumi before she was healed but she clearly could do a lot despite that. The only 2 things that I think would be worse for him are his brain or just taking his life which the truth would not do since then there would be no punishment (in the sense that he would not feel punished since he would be either brain dead or well just dead).

The reason to this is that the other Homunculi possess stones created from the life forces of multiple people, while Bradley only has one spirit in his. For this reason Bradley lacks the regenerative abilities his siblings possess since he doesn't possess multiple souls within his stone to heal wounds making him physically the weakest Homunculus. Later in the series, Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye learns of Bradley's fabricated life and tells him that it was tragic that nothing about him was real. Bradley states that it was untrue, and shows pride in the only choice of his own that he ever had, the choice of making Mrs. Bradley his wife."
