One time, I ended up venting to an artist I was commissioning just because my mental health is shitty in general, and he tried to offer me a mental health discount, but I declined it. Additionally, I couldn't give him an upfront payment due to PayPal being a nuisance, but he gave me the drawing anyways, and 3 months later, I gave him 1500% of what he had originally charged. (He was severely undercharging; $10 for 2 full-body drawings fully-colored and shaded; so I asked him how long they took and paid him $10/hour instead.) It's been about a year since I gave him the payment and he's one of my best friends now as well as my mentor. I've also given him advice on pricing and he now charges $50/drawing with a 50% increase per additional character, which is much more reasonable. Using this pricing system, I paid him $75 for another commission of about the same quality. Additionally, I recently found out that his family is poor and the money from the commissions went towards the family savings. Anyways, watching this video made me realize how easy it was for him to be taken advantage of at the time, so maybe the fact that I paid him fairly despite that factored into us becoming close friends.
@@MangerzArt He is. He got $13 for Christmas, and I recently tipped him $25 for another commission, so I accidentally tipped him almost double his entire family’s Christmas gifts to him. He told me, “That’s a lot. Thank you so much.” and, thankfully, he wasn’t jealous about my Christmas gifts being worth at least 10 times as much as his.
@@MangerzArt I asked him ahead of time whether he preferred a gift or a commission and he wanted a commission. He refuses monetary compensation. Yesterday, I was telling him how he could have an apartment and I could pay his rent, and he told me that I frighten him with such statements.
I love it how they don’t take fees out of your commission and they treat both the client and the artist fairly instead of choosing a side which sometimes results in the clients
I've read on the website that it's only for digital artists. Did they expand to support the traditional artists as well? Or is it going to strictly be for digital artists?
@@desertbloomke I don't really understand how it could be strictly for digital artists? The only thing that would change is how you get the commission to the client right? And there's all kinds of ways that you could specify that in your commission information, so I don't understand how a platform could limit you to only digital art. But I'm oblivious sometimes so clearfication would be appreciated.☺ Note- I'm not being sarcastic, I genuinely want to know so I can be aware of it for myself and others.🥺
i've had problems with pricing my art for a long time (well.. i've only been taking commissions for three or so years, but i've thought about it for a long time!) and one main thing that always tripped me up was the "time" aspect of pricing it. Everyone always says "Price your work based on how long it takes!" or "The longer your work takes, the more you should charge!" but... I can get a colored + cel shaded fullbody done in less than two hours! Maybe one if I don't get distracted (ADHD is a bitch, lmao). It doesn't even take much effort for me either- just turn on some music, turn off my brain, and get to work. For anyone struggling with this too, i'd say look at it a different way: Because you draw so fast, price MORE. if your art is good and it gets done quickly, that's a very good thing for most people, so they'd be willing to pay extra! this video was very good and helped me with a lot of things i thought about commissions etc. :'-0
Absolutely! You shouldn't have to settle for less just because you're experienced and efficient! You put a lot of work into getting to that skill level, so you should price it based on what you feel comfortable earning for the kind of work you're doing. The hourly wage is a good starting point for beginners, but it can be adjusted over time as the artist gets more comfortable in deciding what their work is worth. As demand goes up and skill level increases, prices can be raised!
THIS. I can take weeks to finish a drawing, then do the same thing in a few hours depending on my mood (and ADHD symptoms XD) at the time. The "make an estimate" part in the hourly payment method of the video was really helpful tbh. Considering this as well!
Honestly, I'm watching this video right now because I'm currently looking at adjusting my pricing due to a friend suggesting I be more aware of the time I spend on my commissions. And I too have the ADHD and I was doing the same thing! So thank you so much for sharing, I really appreciate it.
As the client I love when the artist gives frequent updates. A lot of artists make to much progress in one jump and it makes it difficult to ask them to undo their hard work just because they didn’t check if something was right earlier.
I just want to say thank you for showcasing Artistree because for the longest time i wanted to do commissions but had some up's & downs in life. i wouldn't draw because i had a Perfectionist Mindset which prevented me to do what i loved in the 1st place. After watching your video I'm Pumped to start doing Commissions but only after i Re-Visit the basics of art for a little bit & what i know.
This video was very helpful! I’ve heard of commissions but was always told of the hefty fees they come with. I’m not at the skill level i want to be at to start commissions (nor do I have the time right now because of school) or the fact that only my family and a few friends know of me, but this gave me a huge boost of motivation to get better! I’m also thinking of trying your free brushes out more often, I realized I got them a while back but I hadn’t been checking my emails until like a weak ago😂

I was just thinking about starting commissions. This video is definitely going to be helping me a ton.😊💗 Thank u so very much, Nadia 🤗💕💕 Love from India 💖
Thanks for the in depth showcase of Artistree! I've been using a more "old-fashioned" model of handling my commissions; Email for communication, Google Forms to accept commissions, and Sheets to keep track of them and it sometimes gets a bit overwhelming having to juggle updating all of them 😅 Knowing there's a website that handles all including payment is really helpful!
Although I don't think I'll be able to do commissions anytime soon (as I am VERY busy haha) this video is extremely helpful! Thank you! Also, congrats on 300K!!!!!!
I setup my account as I followed along. Im glad to see they included a way to upload the finished product, because I was never sure how to send clients the finished work without loss of quality. I’m so excited, I’ve never done comms before and the simplicity of this site makes me wanna try 😄🤞

I used to be so confused and scared of starting but I'm so excited now!! Thank you so much!! I also feel so validated in pricing my stuff high bc it takes me so long to make it and I feel like I should get what I deserve (*cough* *glaring at mom who said my semi-realistic bust should be priced at 5-8 dollars*)
That's one beautiful website you're promoting Nadia! This motivates me to start my own commissions! Those guys are really really doing god's work, promoting anonymity and giving artists an out from PayPal's evil clutches (lol) while not impacting their revenue stream. Awesome!!
But you have to accept payments by PayPal on artistree :/ I've been worried about using it because of that because I'm confused weather I'd have the same problem with PayPal over again (╯︵╰,)
Thank you so much for this video. I came back to it after watching it once because I am seriously considering doing commissions so I can learn the business side of art. The pros and cons you offered for other payment options was helpful as well, as I almost did get scammed doing it through PayPal (due to someone phishing for information).
This is honestly so useful. It rekindled a bit of my will to actually open commissions this year. Also the fact Artistree helps with reforestation?? Triple win. Thanks for sharing the wisdom! ♥️
Absolutely love how you explained a reasonable, feasible way to price your art! I always hear people say to price based on the amount of work you put in, but never any specific things to think about: timing myself when working on specific pieces and then adding time to account for communication makes so much sense, thank you for being specific!
Thank you for this guide! I'm still scared to do commissions as I'm afraid I won't meet customers expectations but when I'll feel more confident about myself I'll definitely use this site 🤩
This was exceedingly helpful. I just got my first commission request on Instagram and had zero clue what to do next....this was a perfect crash course 😅
It's so nice to see another commission guide from you. You are giving some great advice and it's really helpful. You truly are good at giving information in an easy to understand way. Though, the thing I'm concerned about is all the legal hassles. I would love it if you would consider such generosity as making a video about it. I think it would ease some of the struggles of so many new artists such as myself.
Thank you so much, unknown 💖🤗 Do you perhaps refer to all the legal hassles regarding commission work in general? I used to know a lot about it, but I never felt confident enough in my "legal knowledge" to actually advice people on a deeper level. It's super complicated, so I definitely get why you would want a video like that ;w; I think I used to watch a guy on....Skillshare (I think) just talking about the legal stuff 🤔
@@Nadiaxel Yes, just in general. I understand that it would be quite hard to dive down deep into such complex topics. What I think would have saved me plenty of time would have been a video mention everything regarding laws and referring to places where more information could be found e.g Just mentioning that one needs a business in certain cases and what one is required to learn would have been great. It really isn't as obvious as one would think (sadly). I'm glad you mentioned that you've learned from someone on skillshare. I might look into it later. I'm happy to receive any kind of help when it comes to commissions. I just want to say thank you. You are really great at what you're doing and I look forward to see more of your fantastic content. Your art is amazing and a real inspiration to me and so many others. Your older commission guide was one of the first things that made me consider starting up commissions. Again, thank you. Btw sorry for how I write. It is pretty terrible.
This is all so cool to know~! I needed somewhere to open commissions and I'm really excited that Artistree supports and respects artists. The layout of their website looks sleek and simple to use. I'm excited to open an account and get started with the help of all of your awesome advice!
This is super helpful. Thank you so much. It was thorough and to the point. Loved it. As an artist whose starting out commissions work for the first time, this is indeed needed and once again I'm very grateful that I stumbled across your video. I've already subscribed to your channel and shared the video link with my other artist friends!!
As a relatively new artist who’s considering possibly starting commissions in the future, but doubtful about the trustworthiness of PayPal, am very excited over hearing about Artistree.
I recently discovered your channel and I can't stop watching your videos even thought English is not my first language xD Such a great content! I love it.
This video is gooold! Thank you so much for this, I'm starting my art career doing commissions full time, and this guide helped me a lot organizing my products and pricings!
This video was helpful, I was searching online jobs on the Internet for side hustles and I thought that "why not try to do commissions" since i discarded the idea ever since I stopped drawing digital art 6 years ago cuz of work and life. I really wish I can get some clients asap and enjoy what I love most, making art. ❤
Thank you so much for putting so much work and love into your videos. ❤️ Have been searching for such a plattform the past days. I'm treasuring your vids a lot! ❤️
This is awesome👌 I wanted to try doing commissions to earn money but was scared to do so since it would be my first time and I didn't know how to start. This website would make it a lot easier and less daunting for me ^_^
So glad a site like this exist! I def make an account once I grow my following. ^ ^ Thanks for this, the video was clear and straight to the point and fun to watch. :3 Btw love love your hair! ♥
Artistree is definitely something I would have loved back when I was first starting out. These days I tend to have more professional work than personal commissions and very little time to fit in more. Even so, I'm not sure it would be the platform for someone like myself charging around $400+ per commission. Still worth potentially looking into though.
Thank you so much for this information! I plan on starting commissions but I'm just afraid to do so at the moment, since I don't have my own art style and it changes from time to time. That is why I'm doing some research to learn the ropes, tips, and tricks.
1:55 DON'T do this, most people don't care about sketch or lineart, they want the finished full colored product, trust me. Also use different examples Bust, Half Body and Full body, don't divide one picture into three parts, let them see more examples of what you can do.
Actually alot of people care to see the sketch it shows that theres process to your work. Alot of the viral posts around art tend to be sketches or half finished work so this is something you SHOULD do.
A lot of people care for sketch/lineart, for in case they want you to help them make out the idea of what their character would be. It is cheaper for them if they are just searching for ideas. And if they are commissioning you, they should have seen some art already about examples. This is a price page, not a show off your stuff page...
Agreed about not to divide one pic example into three parts. But sketch/lineart commission is always a nice affordable addition because it provides options for clients who love your arts but currently couldn't afford a full colored one. It's also easier since most artists has sketch/lineart in their workflow anyway.
@@bravaxxii yea sketch, line and full render is usually done. Though I see a lot of people having more categories, for example like or no line art renders, cell shading or realistic etc. though obviously that depends as someone with a art style that uses lines will likely not make line less commissions
Actually it depends on the case. Personally I am a game developer and I prefer that my art is in a pipeline. I have people that Sketch and Line the art then color and shade the rest so that there is a general cohesion with my team!
this is a super nice video!! and i just checked out the page its really good! the ooonly thing i wish i could change is set a limit on the number of revisions i can get per commission, aside from that its incredible!!
Ok finished the video, and all I can say is that this Artistree sounds good, looks good, is good. And all I can hope is that it stays that way. That being said, my only problem in my commission journey is goddamn payment method- (paypal good = problem freaking verification, how tf do i do that)
Thank you for this! I'm looking for a different platform of accepting commissions and Deviant Art has been my only platform for this. I will work on this next!
I rather just keep using paypal tbh and just tell the client there's a 5% paypal fee tax(even tho is higher for me). Few thingies from my experience: try to go for 90% quality, the last 10% takes the most, but in the eyes of most it will be the same; If you're running behind schedule, keep the client up to date not in the dark, in the long run even if you fk up you will see keep some of your clients; ALWAYS, use invoices to get paid; Always be upfront with your clients and ask the same in return. You cannot read their mind, their can they. GL !
If you haven't already, could you make a video for the commission guide for the client? So for the people who do want to commission something, will know how to do it effectively and to make it easy for both sides.
If you go to (almost) the bottom of my new blog post that I linked in the video's description, I made a list of sites where people post jobs that they need artists for 💖 Maybe that would be a good place to start ^^
1) I seriously thought I was subscribed to you because I've watched so many of your videos, ESPECIALLY your art style and commissions videos, but I wasn't??? oops??? 2) this is SO COOL. I immediately started poking around the site and setting up my account. I am so glad they reached out to you for this! I was wondering, do you have any advice on the slump between commissions, especially when they last a long time? I got so ashamed of my lack of commissions that I unpinned all of my commissions posts, which in hindsight is very dumb lol, but it's super embarrassing to have gotten lots of commissions at very poor rates in high school, but now that I'm nearly graduating uni with a degree in illustration, to not get any commissions at all 😭is it just better marketing? most likely lol but if you had any advice, especially with the mental side of things, I'd super appreciate it!
Hi, I hope somebody could respond this doubt about Artistree: If you link your Paypal account to your Artistree account, won't PayPal take the corresponding commission from your payment? Or does Artistree protect you in some way from what Paypal can charge you? I really need to clear this doubt because I really would like to use this platform, please :3

I’m feeling a lot more confident now. Thank you for the tips!
YOOO THIS IS SO HELPFUL. I become 18 next year so setting this up would make me super happy!!!

Have been searching for such a plattform the past days.

Thank you for this lead! This is literally my workflow with security of a third party! Totally swapping into their platform!
this video is really underrated imo, keep going! :D
This is awesome👌 I wanted to try doing commissions to earn money but was scared to do so since it would be my first time and I didn't know how to start. This website would make it a lot easier and less daunting for me ^_^
hi,, thanks for this information,, i hope i can open my own commission soon,, this thought of "im not good enough" is really hold me back 😵
You don't know how badly I needed this and it's also right on time! Good sh*t Nadia! 🤣😂
So glad a site like this exist! I def make an account once I grow my following. ^ ^ Thanks for this, the video was clear and straight to the point and fun to watch. :3 Btw love love your hair! ♥
Wow. What an incredible platform! Your video was so helpful. I really feel I know everything I need to know if I decide to move forward. Just awesome!
I'm not even planning on starting commissions, I don't even know why I'm watching but it's interesting.
Artistree is definitely something I would have loved back when I was first starting out. These days I tend to have more professional work than personal commissions and very little time to fit in more. Even so, I'm not sure it would be the platform for someone like myself charging around $400+ per commission. Still worth potentially looking into though.
Made it just in time o.o Good thing i got your video on recommended.
Thank you so much for this! perfect timing!!!! ^^
Me, while watching this video: *Hoping this "Artistree" is good in the long run*
Ok finished the video, and all I can say is that this Artistree sounds good, looks good, is good. And all I can hope is that it stays that way.
That being said, my only problem in my commission journey is goddamn payment method- (paypal good = problem freaking verification, how tf do i do that)
Thank you very much, I didn't know about this platform. Fiverr takes way too much.. 😅
This video help me so much❤ I will start my art commission next year, thank you❤
I SIGNED UP FOR ARTIST TREE hope I get commissions!
Wow! Incredibly helpful. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thankyou so much for sharing!!
I hope that this new platform stays as good as it sounds!👀 I'm excited to look into it!
Valuable information, and great platform. Ty
you saved my life, i fucking love you
Really good video! helped me out a lot, I will definitely be checking out Artistree for my next commission🙏
Thank you so much for sharing all of this information!
this is great content! exactly what i was looking for. thankyou!
I AM SO IN LOVE WITH YOUR HAIR 😍😍😍
This is so cool! I'll have to check Artistree out!
Found this very helpful, thank you for making this vid!
Thank you for this! I'm looking for a different platform of accepting commissions and Deviant Art has been my only platform for this. I will work on this next!
love the skyward sword figure
ohhh thanks a lot! Artistree looks like very interesting!
I rather just keep using paypal tbh and just tell the client there's a 5% paypal fee tax(even tho is higher for me).
Few thingies from my experience: try to go for 90% quality, the last 10% takes the most, but in the eyes of most it will be the same;
If you're running behind schedule, keep the client up to date not in the dark, in the long run even if you fk up you will see keep some of your clients;
ALWAYS, use invoices to get paid;
Always be upfront with your clients and ask the same in return. You cannot read their mind, their can they.
GL !
Thank you, your videos have really helped me learn a lot! 💜 ❤️ 💙
If you haven't already, could you make a video for the commission guide for the client? So for the people who do want to commission something, will know how to do it effectively and to make it easy for both sides.
Thats so helpfull, great video
If you go to (almost) the bottom of my new blog post that I linked in the video's description, I made a list of sites where people post jobs that they need artists for 💖 Maybe that would be a good place to start ^^
Oo this is so helpful! Thank you so much for making this video ❤
Thank you!!!! Imma watch this video again and again ^^ 😊😊
Literally was trying to find info on commissions
This will definitely be of use to me! I'm getting tired of getting leeched by Fiverr haha.
I got so ashamed of my lack of commissions that I unpinned all of my commissions posts, which in hindsight is very dumb lol, but it's super embarrassing to have gotten lots of commissions at very poor rates in high school, but now that I'm nearly graduating uni with a degree in illustration, to not get any commissions at all 😭is it just better marketing? most likely lol but if you had any advice, especially with the mental side of things, I'd super appreciate it!
nice info ! i just visited the channel and it was really helpful for we artists
Thank goodness, I needed this
Unfortunately it doesn't receive payments for my country yet :( , but I love the site's proposal ! I hope they add it soon :D
Thank you for guide💖! I hope later i can use it to start comm >
Thank you for this video, this is amazing
oh this was so helpful thank you so much!!! 💖💖💖
