This song was written for an abused waitress reflecting on the life she lost. It's crazy how the lyrics can mean something completely different to every one. I connected so so deeply with the lyrics but in my own way. And I think that's just beautiful. Hats off to Sara Bareilles..beautifully written song.
I was first introduced to the song from Gracie Gold's return to figure skating after being diagnosed with an eating disorder. I didnt know that the song was even connected to a musical, so I didnt know it was originally about an abused woman.
No, it's not about a waitress. It's about a woman becoming a mother: The demands the child places on her makes her feel like her life has been reduced to waiting on the child.

This is the angriest version I have seen of this song. I love it. A woman who’s reflecting on her past and is mad at fate but forgiving herself for her mistakes. Hopeful for the future and above all determined that life will be different, she will be different from now on. At least that’s what I get from the song, but I’m not a woman so I may be tottally off base.

@@corryjookit7818 - I’ve never related so completely to a song…the first time my mom heard it she cried & later told me that she thinks of me every time she hears it. This song has woven an invisible thread between millions of us who suffer our weaknesses in silence, feeling so totally alone, only to find out that we aren’t alone. I’m here again. And I’m still in awe of her vocal range, control and emotions. I can feel the rage, sadness and the grip in my heart while she’s singing. Such an amazing performance 👏
Her vocals are so CLEAR, and she sings this with such an authentic emotional quality that is a bit more nuanced/subtle than other Jennas (though I've loved them, too). so good.
I haven’t see her Jenna live, but I feel like she’s much more of a present/forgiving Jenna. This version has not many added riffs or special things, but it is very clean & super powerful. Her acting is so subtle yet super effective & ah I wish I could see Alison live😭
She brought back the emotion that I have not seen since Jessie left. I loved how Alison kept her vocals clean and powerful. I personally thought it got the message across more effectively than unnecessary riffs or “special” techniques would.
I've been listening to several versions of this song by various artists. It's no contest, she is by far best. As the other viewer commented, I'd have to second. He control us unrivaled!!! Wow! Listen again, with headphones . Pay attention to the nuisances in her voice, and that GROWL. Oh wow!
One of the most brilliant live performances ive ever seen by a vocalist. The pianist is pure class as well with pacing that is perfect. These are masters at work.
I relate to this song so much, my life story is unfortunately a lot like Jenna’s (minus the affair lol). I got to escape with my little one and create a great life for my kiddo, just like Jenna did. But god, when I hear this song, it brings me back to the days crying on the bathroom floor crying and holding my stomach promising my child we would get out. I’ve always connected with each individual during every performance of Waitress, given my similarities, but this woman LITERALLY connected to me so deeply I was weeping! THIS is why I love theatre. Such a brilliant, perfect performance and undoubtedly my favorite Jenna thus far.
@@romabelita4551 im late to reply to this, so you might already know the story-but technically it's about this Waitress who is in an abusive relationship with her husband. She unexpectedly gets pregnant, and she starts an affair with a doctor :pp
Okay... I've heard A LOT of versions of this song... and this is absoloutely my favourite version! I mean WOW!! I rarely get choked up but this actually hit me, she is stunning. 😭😭😭
The first time I listened to Allison’s version I cried. Her tone and tears in her eyes are a perfect match to the way Jenna is feeling. When Allison belts the hardest “Mine” and cuts it off it shows how much Jenna is stuck and lost in herself. It shows how much she is tired of what position she is in. Allison’s singing isn’t just wonderful, it’s emotional and portrays the message of the song and once again the position of Jenna. I feel Her singing is so fantastic that there aren’t enough words to describe how much she needs more credit and work Allison has put into acting and singing. I can’t explain how much I love Allison’s work and her version of this song.
Both the pianist and the singer were really telling this story with complete honesty and passion. The singer's technique, control, and emotions brought out the character. While the pianist was painting the scene with just as much passion and conviction. It was truly moving and perfect.
She’s a phenomenal actress, you can hear her emotions in her voice. She also has great control of her voice. Her version is very simple and subtle, very raw, really gives the emotions in it the spotlight. Beautiful.
Sara wrote an amazing song - and Allison’s performance is simply insane. Her diction, awareness, facial emotions, not to mention the vocal performance - is so amazing - it’s hard to put into words. If I compare this to Shoshana Bean, or Katherine McPhee - it’s not even in the same ballpark - and both are great.
Pitch perfect. Masterful control of her diaphragm (while sitting). Expressing deep emotion without her throat closing up. Seeming to look at her past self off in the distance. A supremely exquisite performance, period. My heart will be feeling this for hours.
@@annabizaro-doo-dah uuummmm chill? It’s clearly a typo- I meant to type “this”. If you were able to comprehend reading, you’d see that I was clearly complimenting her and was not making any reference to her gender.
I have listened to this many times, just now leaving a comment. This version wins on so many levels. It absolutely drips with the perfect emotional delivery for which the story begs. And that voice -- pitch perfect, soft and vulnerable when it needs to be and powerful and angry when it needs to be. It's just magnificent. And Alison demonstrates an amazing amount of breath support without seeming like she's dying as she's sitting there! You get the impression she could hold the note(s) even longer. For those who haven't heard it, check out the version that Jeremy Jordan did for Miscast Theatre -- an also incomparable delivery for a male singing a female-role song. But Ms. Luff ... standing ovation!
Rick, that’s a wonderful comment. Her performance is also superb with no video. She acts through the voice. It’s all there. I love Jeremy’s version too.

Beautiful. I keep coming back to this every few weeks. The range of emotions Alison goes through - I was THERE every second of it. The clenching of her fist into her dress at 3:53 just made me feel she was reaching for something with all her might. I felt that. How I wish I had a fraction of her talent!
I've heard so many versions of this, and this is the first one I really TRULY related to on an emotional level. That anger mixed with sadness mixed with ANGER is so poignant. Great job!
I saw Alison live and let me just say the emotion she brought to the stage looked so genuine, sincere and natural, she had the whole place in tears!! Also that fact that her version is so pure and she doesn’t add all the riffs in and has such control over her voice, it really is PERFECTION!!!! She is so unbelievably talented I think it is totally stupid that her run was only 2 months!!! She is INCREDIBLE!!! She is definitely my favourite Jenna!! (Can I also point out that she holds the big belting notes the longest out of any Jenna which is adding a new challenge to an already challenging song 😉)
As beautiful as her voice is, you could watch this with the audio off and still be incredibly moved. The intensity of her facial expressions are awe inspiring. Put the two together and … wow.
the simplicity is what’s so perfect about this. In a world full of so much bombastic stage performing I yearn for someone to just sit down and say the damn words.
I honestly must have listened to like 1000 versions of this song, including witnessing Kat McPhee sing it live.. BUT THIS... THIS is the greatest version hands down... WOW! 😭😭😭😍😍😍

I got that reference and loved it
It's raining on my face too
I'm baking a lasagna...for one...
I think Sara Bareilles truly grasps the essence of being human. We need to embrace life and celebrate our humanness.
My thoughts exactly
She creates masterpieces 😭😢❤❤❤❤❤
Cleanest vocals out of all the Jenna's. Absolutely stunning.
A Neumann mic doesn’t hurt either.
So far this rendition "takes the cake!!" It is indeed, my favorite yet!!
you mean "takes the pie"
I think she has the most solid technique out of all the Jennas Ive heard and I love it.
OMGmynameisLILI - Lili Martínez Jordan Sparks is pretty incredible too
Jesse Muller?
Check out Lucie Jones
I actually think that honour goes to Betsy Wolfe or Nicolette Robinson.
I agree she and Jesse Mueller...both good in their unique way
I haven’t see her Jenna live, but I feel like she’s much more of a present/forgiving Jenna. This version has not many added riffs or special things, but it is very clean & super powerful. Her acting is so subtle yet super effective & ah I wish I could see Alison live😭
Alison Luff did a fantastic job as Jenna.
She brought back the emotion that I have not seen since Jessie left. I loved how Alison kept her vocals clean and powerful. I personally thought it got the message across more effectively than unnecessary riffs or “special” techniques would.
J E J my thoughts exactly! super clean & super effective! simplicity sometimes is key & holy wow she nailed it
I prefer Jenna’s who don’t add a lot of special things. When they do it clean, I feel like the emotions are conveyed better & it is way more raw.
she was an amazing jenna live. i saw shoshana who killed it but i felt the emotion more seeing alison
That moment when she grips her dress..🙌🏼 This entire performance is flawless.
That moment.
I've been listening to several versions of this song by various artists. It's no contest, she is by far best. As the other viewer commented, I'd have to second. He control us unrivaled!!! Wow! Listen again, with headphones . Pay attention to the nuisances in her voice, and that GROWL. Oh wow!
This is the most soul wrenching performance I’ve ever heard.
One of the most brilliant live performances ive ever seen by a vocalist. The pianist is pure class as well with pacing that is perfect. These are masters at work.
You should watch Joshua colleys permformance of this song
I'm so sorry. I'm glad your in a better place now. It's really such an amazing show
Glad you're doing better :)
Im happy to know you're in a better place now. God bless you and your child.
I al not into musicals... Gould you please tell me The story ?
@@romabelita4551 im late to reply to this, so you might already know the story-but technically it's about this Waitress who is in an abusive relationship with her husband. She unexpectedly gets pregnant, and she starts an affair with a doctor :pp
Not sure if I’ve heard anyone this good since Lea Solonga. What an incredible voice.
the pianist in the back jamming and vibing to alison’s performance is deadass me accept its past midnight for me and i’m bawling like a baby
I'm sorry, but who gave her permission to sing that so perfectly??? What the hell? I'm crying my eyes out.
ITS 100% perfect. IM SO CONFUSED. The amount of talent this women has is unmatchable!
Lovely
I know. I cry every freaking time
She has no right being this incredible!! Hahaha😂😂 I’m offended by her voice.
God I wish I could sing
She is the song herself. I can't stop crying too.
Wow. Vocally most perfect I’ve seen yet. And definitely the most damaged and angry Jenna I’ve seen. This girl looks HURT
It’s like she is singing as if that song is her life story… totally remarkable and stunning
Chills...the way she belts it out with a little bit of roughness and anger makes it so powerful.
Okay... I've heard A LOT of versions of this song... and this is absoloutely my favourite version! I mean WOW!! I rarely get choked up but this actually hit me, she is stunning. 😭😭😭
Abbie Carleton absolutely agree!!!
SAME SAME SAME SAME
Sheesh guys, give those last few notes a moment to breathe before jumping to credits...
Yeah, a travesty of video production, that is.
I hate that cheesy outro and intro music. Just a logo would've been fine.
this is the very first time I hear this song , and her performance just made me cry. She makes you feel all the emotions at the same time. Just wow.
Jessie Mueller will always be Jenna to me, but THIS is exactly how I imagine the song should be sung 💕💕
exactly! Very well said. Probably the best version I've ever heard.
yeah jessie hits different
Holy crap. I was so enthralled by Alison's performance that I didn't even notice the piano player is someone I've known for 30 years. Go, Mary!
Thank you so much, Ellen! 💗
Both the pianist and the singer were really telling this story with complete honesty and passion. The singer's technique, control, and emotions brought out the character. While the pianist was painting the scene with just as much passion and conviction.
It was truly moving and perfect.
When she said "She is all of that mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie, I FELT THAT
She’s a phenomenal actress, you can hear her emotions in her voice.
She also has great control of her voice.
Her version is very simple and subtle, very raw, really gives the emotions in it the spotlight. Beautiful.
she’s so amazing i get chills listening to her every time.
welcome to the fangirl parade same
Sara wrote an amazing song - and Allison’s performance is simply insane. Her diction, awareness, facial emotions, not to mention the vocal performance - is so amazing - it’s hard to put into words. If I compare this to Shoshana Bean, or Katherine McPhee - it’s not even in the same ballpark - and both are great.
the raspyness at “learns how to toughen up” gave me chills ugh
SO powerful and sitting still. I MEAN CMON. That tone and control! Wow.
I just saw Alison and she was INCREDIBLE!!! After the big belt at 3:50, the audience just kept clapping!
this is the most perfect pitch i've heard in a performance ever
This is THE best rendition of this song. THE BEST.
Pitch perfect. Masterful control of her diaphragm (while sitting). Expressing deep emotion without her throat closing up. Seeming to look at her past self off in the distance. A supremely exquisite performance, period. My heart will be feeling this for hours.
Whilst sitting yes that got me as well.
His, her voice is SO CLEAR and controlled. Perfect example that you don’t need to overdo it and over act to portray Jenna in this cover. Best ever
His? Her voice. A woman. A woman's song and a woman's voice. Claim what's yours.
@@annabizaro-doo-dah uuummmm chill? It’s clearly a typo- I meant to type “this”. If you were able to comprehend reading, you’d see that I was clearly complimenting her and was not making any reference to her gender.
She felt every single word! It's fantastic what the music can make us feel...
This is the best singing and interpretation of this song. She had the most consistent accent. And her voice is so pure. Amazing.
check out morisette amon's rendition hers is the best, you will really feel more emotion and perfection of the song.prise you will not regret to hear her voice.
@@ninoanthonygalanida8374 that Morissette Girl can't even compete with this version in the slightest.
@@simonopps oh really have you watch it already?, i think you are mistaken. Even others are convinced that she has the best cover of the song. we'll do the have different taste and judgment, i respect yours 🙂
@@simonopps but im triggered that you say can't even compete in the slightest, maybe you are just dumb and ignoring a talent, or maybe you are a racist you can't just accept talents from other country.🥴🙄
the fact that there's no much of background music but still she deliver the emotion of the song perfectly. And morissette version has more emotion of the song compare to hers. 🙄
Rarely in my life have I EVER heard a song delivered with such passion, grit and beauty. I could "feel" every word Alison sang. Wow. WOW!
Beautiful. I keep coming back to this every few weeks. The range of emotions Alison goes through - I was THERE every second of it. The clenching of her fist into her dress at 3:53 just made me feel she was reaching for something with all her might. I felt that. How I wish I had a fraction of her talent!
Absolutely stunning! I saw her live last weekend and I couldn’t stop crying!
Amanda Molinaro me too! she had such an effect the theatre she was so powerful
I apologise for not knowing who she is but.. I'm blessed to have watched this video.. beautiful soul
i literally had a mini stroke watching this live. she’s truly amazing
Perfect, the anger, the pain, the reminisce, and the love all comes through. I can only listen to this when no one else is around.
This is the best version I've ever heard of this song gives me the chills how good she is incredible spectacular
She is precise and crisp. Yup, she's a PRO. Obsessed with her.
This amount of pain in her expression and it doesn’t seem to affect her tone quality... incredible!
the simplicity is what’s so perfect about this. In a world full of so much bombastic stage performing I yearn for someone to just sit down and say the damn words.
That is one of the most beautiful performances I have ever heard/seen in my life. Absolutely breathtaking.
This is one of the greatest vocal performances I’ve ever heard by anyone, ever
I honestly must have listened to like 1000 versions of this song, including witnessing Kat McPhee sing it live.. BUT THIS... THIS is the greatest version hands down... WOW! 😭😭😭😍😍😍
i had the most incredible opportunity of my life to see this incredible human sing this emotional song. there wasn’t a dry eye in the audience, and everyone was speechless for about 10 seconds straight about getting a 2 minute standing ovation. allison inspires me. i have sobbed so much after listening to this.
Of all versions, this one is no doubt on top of my list.
Same🤩
I tried to sing this beautiful song and my friend played the piano, it’s not perfect but it would mean the world to me if you saw our version! 🤗❤️
