It’s unhealthy how many times I come back here

Same!
SAME!!!
Same!
I can totally relate! I keep comin' back for more... More of that emotions! 💞
She made me realize it's not just all about singing it's about story telling.
Yah that’s right
you'll realize they are one and the same. Good vocalists know how to use their instrument to emote well.
one of the things i so want to learn.
Omg yes this is a book not only a song when she sings
Watch Jeremy Jordan's rendition of this song and you'll realize that even more!
Isn’t she just a technical genius? I mean, emotions aside (she has those in droves), this woman has so much control of her instrument, I’m just in awe... GIVE HER HER ORIGINAL MUSICAL AND TONY NOOOOWWWW!!
I'm currently writing a musical, may reach out to her to star in it
@@demontelavon omg plssss do!!!
She was R O B B E D of a tony!!!!!
@@malloryfallon6394 She's never been eligible for nomination.
her being a beat behind the accompaniment is a such an artistic choice. its like a reflection of her falling behind life, a life thats moved far beyond where she is
I kind of love her acting choice to not be on beat the whole time, as if she's considering her next words and singing this for the first time as the character. Wow.
Truee. If I do this, I sound like I don't know rhythm. 🤣
John Paul Santos it takes a good pianist to follow your lead, too! But it’s obvious they’re both professionals :-) this was a wonderful performance
Makes it more real
Queen of back-phrasing.

It's not just the perfection of her singing, it's the way Shoshana is connecting emotionally with the lyrics that gets me.
Yes!!
1000th like omg the way the number changes from 999 to 1k is so satisfying.
Yes!!! I crumble in tears every single time.
She has this inhuman ability to connect with the lyrics and hurl them right at her audience. I think it’s witchcraft, idk. Definitely magic.
Love her interpretation..
She’s really masterful in translating emotions through her vocals. When she sang “finally reminds her” with a slight rasp from being a wisp away from crying is just amazing.
Most incredible line. Sho is amazing.
She is good singer her voice have power and its stronger
3:15!!! Yes sooo good
I’ve been doing the rounds of various amazing performances of this song. Jordin Sparks makes me cry fastest, Alison Luff is so beautifully angry, Katherine McPhee is gorgeously introspective, but this. Shoshana seems to have captured so much. There’s the deep, bitter regret, the self-reflection, the frustration & more fear about the future than anyone else I’ve heard. Wow.
Totally agree 👍
Lucy Thomas. Breathtaking.
Couldn't have said it better!
Masterpiece opportunity. Perfectly written song that lends itself to virtuosic vocal performances.
I've heard them all and it just doesn't get any better than this! They are all 10s but this is off the charts!!
Wow. I have never heard She Used to be Mine like this and I'm NOT complaining.
This is pretty consistent with Jeremy Jordan's version. Equally incredible.
If you think about it, Shoshana could never return to NYC for very long for a very valid reason. It represented so many deeply emotional memories. The love of her life died on the streets of this city. This song is performed almost like a memory to that time in her life. I cried like 3 times
@@jaqenhghar2446 search up adrian matthew she used to be mine, this young boy has such an amazing voice
@@romalovesmac You assume I didn't know about him.. Adrian Matthew was pretty amazing at the cast karaoke, but his style was still more akin to Jessie Meuller's version than this or Jeremy Jordan's.
This version is sooo raw. I still feel the memories of Tyler in this performance.
why isn't someone writing a musical behind Shoshana? She could absolutely be with the legends of broadway- Patti, Barbra, Bernadette, Audra, Chita....it needs to happen.
I would love to see her as Fantine tbh but idk if she’s considered too old to play her bc sometimes the theatre is shitty about that
Oh she is. A Broadway legend? Absolutely.
She absolutely NEEDS to originate a role. Period. Girl needs to get that Tony.
Lea Salonga is the true legend of Broadway.
Coz she has no personality
Just discovering this in 2020. what the hell. where the hell have I been

Right where have I been?
My sentiments exactly Jasmine!! Beautiful voice and song 💖
I’ve listened to a TON on renditions of this song and everyone manages to put their stamp on it but in similar ways. THIS rendition stands completely on its own. So much emotion not a note out of place, power and restraint at the same time. Shoshana u are the QUEEN! By far my favorite
Hope you may find time to listen to Morissette Amon's version of this song. Love her rendition and of course Shoshana's version, so love this!
I agree! This version is the best one! I felt every word she sang!
@@karzymimi42 listen to Kelly new version
This version makes me sob.
No lies detected!
She killed this song. Bought it a casket, had a funeral, and sent it off to Heaven. Left bare her WHOLE soul. This is why ShoshBean is a QUEEN!!
Ronnie Rose and that’s an AMEN for the musical theater children
Her ability to tell the story not only through her voice BUT her eyes. BRAVA!!!
I think I have issues. I literally listen to this every single day
Same here 😢
You don't have issues, you have good taste
Jerhodia January IT ONLY TAKES A TASTE
It's therapy for me
Same😢
She builds the song masterfully... that's a kinda genius. And the voice is a marvel of color and control...the riffs are used judiciously and to great effect. And then there's the deep loneliness of a woman who feels hollow and desensitized and just wants to be herself again. It's a heartbreaking performance.
I find it fascinating that even though I've heard this song like a million times since it came out (I'm honestly surprised I'm not sick of it by now :P) and interpreted in so many different ways, every single performer brings something totally different. And Shoshana's version is definitely up there in my favorites!
I was thinking while watching this (and not at all getting sick of hearing new interpretations!) how amazing the writing from Sara Bareilles is and how it must be so wonderful for her to see each new person take this and run with it. How thrilled she must be that it's touching so many different people. At least I hope she feels that way.
@@cuchelo1 Well said. Seeing Sara in the front row in Pittsburgh in November. I might cry throughout the entire concert.
@@keldailey6827 I'm crying just thinking about it, lol! Enjoy!!!
Wow I agree. I found this song late but I am constantly surprised how much I still love it.
If you would be kind enough please check out my version of this song too, It would mean alot for me,someone who is starting out♥️♥️♥️

Proud of us..
Pahahha
The way she effortlessly slips and slides her way through the off beats while still keeping tempo is what is truly telling about her talent!
This is BY FAR the best version of this song
I've been lucky enough to see Waitress 6 times over the years (Jesse 2x, Betsy 2x, Sarah 1x and Katherine 1x) and this is the first time an actress had me me tear up during this song since the very first time I saw it with Jesse Mueller. Shoshana is just something else we dont deserve her
On the flip side Sarah Bareilles doing the parody version about Angela Merckel on SNL still made me cry ... lol. But this is still a truly, supremely evocative performance.
im not up to you. I have seen jessie n Katherine both amazing. I'm going for third because of this video.it makes me sob .
sara**
you lucky man!.. I wanted to see it in NY with Sara and Jason Mraz but couldnt find anybody who would fly over with me!... It's in London and we are going to see it later this month. Excited is not the word! :-)
Matt DeBenedictis oOoOo how was betsy?
In a hypothetical situation if this was once again a new show and Tony season was coming, Sho would 1000% deserve a nod.
unnoticedones oh hands down, that’s why I be like GURL !!!!! I know you have the whole like albums and stuff but GET BACK TO BROADWAY so you can get that tony and really blow up
Not just a nod, a win.

@@Thismeekpotato If she's against Cynthia Erivo's performance on the Color Purple I doubt. But if she's gonna do it, she's gonna do it.
They should have a replacement cast category.
You'll never see a mainstream artist perform like this.
LITERALLY
She literally cracks her heart open and pours it right out on stage. Her rendition guts me every time I hear it.
The way she uses that rasp is so raw and real it made me instantly cry
Me too girl. She is incredible!!
Same here
That last “mine” was such a perfect choice vocally, it just really showed how much pain the character was in... it was like a wail, which makes total sense because it’s just pure emotion and pain by the end and Shoshana is a master of acting through a song. Simply amazing.
@Faceless this is the correct opinion
when you even forget that that is a song. You just get so carried away with the story telling and the emotions that time stops and you're transported to another place, together with her. THAT is how you sing a song. You LIVE it. Damn it. Love you Shoshana
February 2023 and I’m still here. I love you forever, Shoshana!
She’s raw and she’s angry and so, so sad and it’s amazing how easily she portrays it, without the scenery, without the context of the rest of the musical, without the clothes, just herself, a mic and the piano. It’s different from the other Jenna’s and it’s amazingly heartbreaking. I love, love, love this so much.
Couldn't explain it any better
Yes
*nods in approval*
Shoshana is the queen of taking modern styles like riffing and opting up but using acting and motive to create those styles. She’s brilliant.
This is a perfect way to describe her performance. The vocal choices in this are just incredible.
That's how it should be imo! Sure vocal tecnique is fundamental in musical theatre, but it should be used to feel more free with the acting choices and actually enhance them, not just to show off
I’m still here. November 2019 and I’m still here.
wow this year's gone so quickly, it seem like last month she was still in the show aha
Me too

ME TOO I PLAY THIS WHEN I NEED A GOOD CRY LOL
Same. At least once a week.
1M views. Sho deserves this. She owns this song.
I think it deserves more than one million :)
Me coming back trying to get her to 7.9billion by the end of 2021😂😂
We must remember Shoshana Bean IS 100% the reason why WICKED producers believed that the show was bigger than Idina Menzel. This is the same girl that led sold out shows on a regular basis with her voice when she was a virtual nobody. She was carving herself out a lane to be a legend until Tyler's death. He challenged her to be bigger, be better, and believe she's enough. His death taught her a reality she was just doing a job living in NYC . This performance just shows all of Tyler's lessons coming to fruition. The power of Love ❤❤❤
Sean Yates she really was!!! She paved the way virtually for all future Elphaba to make the songs their own.
I'm not a big Wicked fan or Shoshana fan (not because I don't like them, just because i haven't exposed myself to a lot of their work) so... i hope you don't mind me asking but.... who's Tyler?
@@annanonymous7637 her boyfriend whom she was very close with. He died in a car accident around 2006

Megan Lydon It was her fiancé. She’s talked a lot about how the 1st album plus years of therapy has helped her deal with his death. She still wears the rings on her finger.
I started dying at 2:33
dUDE I SWEAR THE SECOND HALF IS REALLY FRICKING PAINFUL
Me too. Chills, tears the whole nine. Absolutely amazing.
Play this version. Put your phone down. Close your eyes. Transcend. Shoshana made my whole body feel like it was made of radio static.
The fact that she sing this from the bottom of her heart, does anyone know her story. She sing like she’s been In the same position as the character. 😭💕
I can't believe Shoshana got April Ludgate to play the keyboard for her
I’m dying😂😂😂
I was looking to see if anyone else thought the same as me!!! LOLOLOLOL
What the F??! I was expecting something good already cause it's Shoshana but this is INSANEEE!!!! Best interpretation of the song so far in my opinion.
Matt Tam agreed. A million times!
Yes I agree! Best I’ve heard!! What an incredible story teller but also not overdoing it. Wow. 😍
I read the beginning and almost misinterpreted this comment greatly, but yes completely agree.
I totally agree, it's in my 3!!
Agreed truly and completely!
I’ve seen so many renditions of this song on UA-cam and this is by far the best vocal/acting performance. The ability to convey the message of that powerful song with nothing more than a stool, microphone, and piano is beyond me.
This. This is the only one that actually made me cry.
I just died and went to heaven. Jessie's rawness and phrasing is still my favorite, but I love this just as much.
Time to hit repeat all day...
“...learns how to toughen up...” 😍😭🙌🏼
Oh I know I started getting all teary eyed like damn 😭
Best delivery of that phrase from all the actresses... she has it and no one can do it like her. So perfect.
she ATE this
I can't tell you how many times I come back to listen to this. No other singer compares. She just grabs you by the soul and takes you to a place where all the feelings are finally safe to be felt. No matter what else is happening around you, it melts away into the background. You cannot help to be anything other than ultimately present and vulnerable. Bravo!

Masterclass in acting through song. And also having a sick voice. LOVE SHO ❤️
This is level of performance only comes from years of experience--not only as a professional singer but from personal experience as well. She delivers the song/story with a great deal of wisdom and I think this is what differentiates her performance from other singers' performances. Those little pauses she does is very effective in evoking the idea of the wisdom and introspection.
This is by far my favorite interpretation of this song!!!!
The dynamics in this performance are crazy! She told the story so beautifully and with such control!
Her voice is so beautiful and her acting while just sitting on a stool is somehow also beyond amazing
3:05 and just like that my wig was lost.
Your wig and my edges...snatched!🤯😭

This is a masterclass performance. This is how you perform a song. 🙌🏽🔥🔥
This is BY FAR the best version of this song. You'll never see a mainstream artist perform like this..
Shoshana Bean redefined what Broadway is. She’s absolutely the best.
We’re in NYC for our anniversary, and we’ve already seen 3 broadway shows, and we simply can’t afford another one. Then I watched this video. We’re going to “Waitress” tomorrow night.
Waitress was amazing 😍
the way she connects the phrase at 3:26 is so so good
Damn she can sing. She's a story teller thru song!
The like button doesn’t seem enough for this performance. We need a wow button.
I really thought Jeremy was gonna get Jenna's part
Hubur Galula bruh that is a mood

She sings this song like no one else she owns it.
I haven’t felt this emotional listening to this song since Jessie was in the role of Jenna, I think I may have a new favourite Jenna
Feel exactly the same
I was not planning on crying today but I see Shosh, click, and get WRECKED
Same!! Certain lyrics render me a mess, but add in Sho singing and I cant deal!!
God me too. Wow that was beautiful
Masterclass on how to sing this song… the best version I’ve heard, emotive, gritty, technically flawless, tells a believable story bringing the performance to another level.…. absolute perfection!
One of the greatest voices and talents of her generation
She is literally telling a story, the way she connects with the lyrics made me speechless
I was captivated from the first to the latest note of the song
One of the best singers ever
She really is perfect. She's the perfect Elphaba, perfect Jenna. Damn
This is by far the best rendition. She took it to heaven and then buried it. LOVE SHOSHANA! love love her!!
She sings with her eyes. Before she even sings theres a look tht sets the scene. Incredible. I know what this song is about without seeing the show because of the emotional input and her eyes. Think 50k of the views are mine. X
THAT 👏🏻IS👏🏻ACTING👏🏻ON👏🏻THE👏🏻DAMN👏🏻LINE👏🏻!!! So brilliant! This was my church today 🙌🏻
I'm obsessed with the riff at 2:53. A bit of Sho had to break through somewhere! Really cool use of singing off the beat too around 1:15. Love her.
Thomas Gareau WET 4 LYFE FROM THAT RIFF
Obsessed with that riff!

She sounded like Celine Dion with that riff
Oh god.. Look at her eyes... Im crying
Best version. Hands down.
Just back for my daily viewing of this
This song makes me cry every single time.
Sara Bareilles is an outstanding songwriter.
The BEST performance of this song. ever!!!
So much color. She has the perfect quality of voice to perform this song, it's so passionate. Some of the expression is dramatic, but there's a whole lot that isn't, and i think that's even more important to have when performing songs like this. So amazing, I'm in tears.
It's not simple to say
That most days I don't recognize me
That these shoes and this apron
That place and its patrons
Have taken more than I gave them
It's not easy to know
I'm not anything like I used be, although it's true
I was never attention's sweet center
I still remember that girl
She's imperfect, but she tries
She is good, but she lies
She is hard on herself
She is broken and won't ask for help
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine
It's not what I asked for
Sometimes life just slips in through a back door
And carves out a person and makes you believe it's all true
And now I've got you
And you're not what I asked for
If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back
For a chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two
For the girl that I knew
Who'll be reckless, just enough
Who'll get hurt, but who learns how to toughen up
When she's bruised and gets used by a man who can't love
And then she'll get stuck
And be scared of the life that's inside her
Growing stronger each day 'til it finally reminds her
To fight just a little, to bring back the fire in her eyes
That's been gone, but used to be mine
Used to be mine
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine
yes shoshana! bringing some soul into the role!!
maxine pontillas you must have not seen Christine Dwyer from the tour...

Don’t forget Allison Luff’s version, too.
(Sorry, I have to add Jordin Sparks!)
Ohmigod. She just rips your heart out, stomps on it, puts it back in and then rips it out and stomps on it again. You can tell she's coming at this song from a very real place of anguish. Wow.
I always find myself coming back here. No one sings this song like her. I'm left in awe every time.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?? 😍😭
i personally prefer her version rather than jessie’s. shoshana’s voice fits it better 🤷🏼♀️
liv egan I totally agree! Perfect tone for this song & she’s so emotional without forcing herself to be. It’s just heartbreakingly gorgeous.
Have you heard Jordin Sparks sing this?? 😍
Jonathan Rodriguez her version is flawless
@@jonathanrodriguez4666 I honestly think Jordin has the ideal voice for this song; I just wish there was more emotion in her Club Broadway version. Emotion is EVERYTHING for this character. To be fair, she doesn't have as much experience as Shoshana in acting though and I have no clue how she performs on stage. (I refuse to watch bootlegs because I know the actors don't like them, although I recognize that it makes theater more accessible to those with lower incomes.)
I mean - look at her eyes. The way she acts is breathlessly wonderful. She puts so much power in this song with every single movement she does. I'm speechless and amazed 😪💛
it's frightening how many times i've seen this video
Her control and the way she makes riffs seem so easy are INSANE! 😱
I feel so honored that I got to see this in person. Bone chilling every time Shoshana sings.....
I love the distortion in her belts, especially the top belts in this song. It makes it sound like she’s screaming in anger and resentment. Such a great choice for this song. It’s so emotional 😭
Definitely no shade to anyone else, but this is my favorite version I’ve heard of this song.
This piece resonates so much with me. My own life sadly mirroring the words of this song.
The emotional journey you can see visible on her face is my favorite thing about this❤️
This bih really came for ALLLL our wigs to snatch them and send them to a different dimension... phew!!! 😳🙌🏼
We all know Shoshana Bean has one of the best voices on the planet. However, I think her ability to tell a story through song is quite underrated. I believe every single syllable of this song, and she makes me FEEL it. It’s just exquisite.
Shoshana made the first version of this song here in Broadwaycom channel, as followed by Allison, Jordin, & recently Katherine. Yet this is still my favorite. 😍
My family saw her three days ago. It's no exaggeration that she managed to shatter the entire Sunday matinee audience. Everyone was crying and it felt absolutely amazing. She put so much energy that when she finished the audience needed a strong 30 seconds of clapping and sobbing before she could continue.
Officially the best version of that song I’ve ever heard. The dynamics and intricacies of each phrase were perfectly executed. Amazing. So amazing 🤩🤩🤩
I never got this song before hearing her sing it. Made me cry for my old, hurt, but beautiful self. I'm inspired to find that beauty, again, and never again let her go.💞
